Chapter 5
"From the way this is quite much, I am sure the story behind it must be equally as much also, so begin talking, my sweet cousin," Sophia said immediately as they stepped away from their grandmother into the kitchen.
It wasn't much, aside from it being a tardy compartment; it was just a separate room as cooking had to be done somewhere else to avoid any sort of fire outbreak. Still, they managed to make it work, just like they managed to do with everything. The kitchen had two gas stoves and some pots. It was all they needed, and they were satisfied with it.
"So come on now, cousin, start talking," Sophia pressed Justine further.
"Why are you in such a hurry to let me tell you everything? At least let us light up the stove first and begin cooking," Justine said to her, being hesitant.
Sophia hurriedly grabbed the lighter, set the stove along with a pot and water, then turned to her cousin. "Now spill the beans."
"Alright, tiger, you might want to slow down and reserve the energy for your fancy school, don't you think?" Justine teased her.
Sophia looked right back at her, not changing her facial expression one bit.
"Alright, fine then, I'll talk," Justine said as she picked up some potatoes from the grocery bag and started peeling them.
"So, here I was, minding my own business," Justine began speaking, "looking for jobs from store to store and from one coffee shop to another. Trust me when I say this, it was hectic as it usually is."
"Of course, I know how stressful it is. Why do you think I gave up?" Sophia chimed in.
"Do not interrupt me! You are the one who asked for a story," Justine snapped at Sophia as she kept on peeling the potatoes.
"Okay, okay, I'm sorry, jeez. Carry on with the story."
"Then, one of the stores I ran into," Justine continued, "there was a sign out that there's a vacancy for a personal assistant to the manager. The ad also stated that no work experience is needed and interested personnel should apply within. It sounded like a good offer, so I took up the challenge and decided to apply.
I met this rude-looking receptionist, but you trust me not to care about what anyone thinks or the bad character they think they possess, mine is way worse trust me."
So I walk up to her and tell her I am interested in getting a job here, and I would like to meet the person that is meant to be in charge of my interview.
And now, here's what she did that annoyed me. She disrespectfully sized me up from head to toe, then pretended like she didn't hear me, as if it wasn't a person talking to her. Justine sounded pissed upon recounting this memory to Sophia.
"That is a terrible thing to do. Sometimes I wonder why some people act like that. She is a very dumb person for her to act that way. How did the dummy even get a job?" Sophia said this, trying to make Justine forget the anger.
It worked, as she seemed to lighten up a bit. "Well, I wasn't going to be disrespected anyway," Justine continued. "So I repeated my request to her in a polite tone again, but this time it was more firm... and maybe a tad loud, to be honest. But I didn't care. I told her I wanted an interview. It was at that moment I was able to catch her attention."
"Please lower your voice. Shouting is not a practice that is allowed here," she had said to me.
Well, I looked her straight in the eyes and told her I would have to shout if not that she was a deaf receptionist. I think that struck a nerve within her because she became very pissed.
"...And I liked it. You want to go around looking down on people, and now it was her turn to shout."
Justine giggled as she said this, and Sophia also joined in.
"How dare you insult me? What do you mean I am deaf?" the receptionist shouted back at me, Justine continued narrating her story to Sophia.
"Am I wrong? I walked in here, asked a question, and did not get a response. Well, it's either you are deaf or you're just a very bad receptionist," Justine said back to her.
"Young lady, you must leave this premises this instant. I have had enough of this. It's either you walk out, or I call security to throw you out!"
"You are very unprofessional. That won't be necessary," I snapped back at her. "I am already leaving." I turned around to leave.
"As you should have," Sophia said to Justine, encouraging her.
"What's going on here?" I heard a voice call out just as I turned.
"It's this lady causing a nuisance. I already sent her out," the receptionist said.
"You didn't answer my question, receptionist. I asked, "What is going on here?"
The voice sounded so calm and mature, I had no reason but to turn around. This person looked like he commanded a lot of respect. It was easy for me to come to the conclusion that this person was of high importance, probably the manager or something.
"Exactly what I told your receptionist here—that she is deaf. A simple question you asked her, and she's answering with an off-pointer," Justine said to him.
"You may leave now, young lady," the receptionist snapped back at me.
"Enough of this," the man raised a hand to silence the receptionist, and God, it felt good to watch.
"May you state your business here, ma'am?" he said as he turned to me.
God, he was young and handsome. He had such blue eyes and curly dark hair. I kind of felt a knot in my belly as he talked to me.
I kind of stuttered a bit before gathering the courage to speak to him. "Well, I saw an ad placed outside about there being a vacancy. I walked in here to apply for the position, but the receptionist here kept on acting like I didn’t exist. Is that any way to treat potential employees?"
I decided to fake being emotional. "I only want a job. Is that a crime?" Justine began sobbing silently.
"Hey, hey, I am really sorry that had to happen. Please, do well to wipe those tears of yours and come into my office. Let’s have that interview."
He stretched out his hand and guided me into his office.
"That is so sweet, Justine. Would you look at how your luck just turned? But I can’t help but feel like you have deviated from the purpose of you telling me all this. Where did you get the groceries?" Sophia pressed.
"Will you calm down and let me finish? We are already getting to that part," Justine snapped back at her.
"Well, the food is almost ready, and I would like to know before I eat a spoon out of it."
"Just shut up and let me finish, please. Then we can both eat."
Sophia nodded her head in agreement. Justine equally seemed excited to recount this side of her story.
"So I walked into this really nice office. It had all sorts of decorations and a large table. I wondered how this young man got to be in charge of such a place. I mean, I am pretty sure he was only two years older than I am."
"Well, he asked me to sit and began asking me the usual questions.
‘So, what’s your name?’ he asked me as soon as I was seated.
‘My name is Justine!’ I replied to him with a smile.
‘Well, my name's Ward. I'm in charge of this place,’ he said, stretching his hand forward to exchange a handshake with me."
I found him to be very polite, as he kept on apologizing for what the receptionist did.
"‘She is going to face a query for that. She can’t go around acting rude to potential colleagues of ours.’
In my head, I’m like, colleagues? Does that mean there’s a chance of me getting this job?
‘So, what can I do to make this right? Anything you want?’
Justine smiled. She was taken aback by this question, but it was such a nice gesture from him. I didn’t know what to say in response.
‘Well, that wouldn’t be necessary,’ I said to him. ‘I am fine just the way I am.’
He clearly disagreed with that. ‘Nonsense. Give me your account details. Let me make you a wire transfer, at least for all your troubles. It’s the least I can do.’
I wrote it on the piece of paper he handed over to me. I will not lie—I got excited at the sound of money, but I had to maintain my composure and not seem like a greedy person."
.."And I will hope to see you resume here next week. Congratulations, you got the job."
A huge smile spread across my face as he said this. "Thank you so much! I am really grateful for this."
He nodded his head and started fiddling with his phone. Then, he handed it over to me and asked that I input my personal number there.
It was then I knew that this handsome CEO might also have a thing for me, Justine continued narrating to Sophia, who was totally enjoying this story now.
"So, I did, and he offered to escort me out of his office. We finally got out of the store.
‘See you next week then. I will be in touch,’ he said to me as he waved goodbye and walked back in.
A few steps later, my phone vibrated, and it was a message from him asking if I had seen it.
‘Seen what?’ I thought, till I opened my bank app and saw the balance. He sent me money. I thanked him.
And that, my dear cousin, is where I got the money to buy all this." Justine concluded her story with a satisfied smile.
"Well, that sounds great! I am really happy you got the job, cousin, and also a huge admirer all in one day. Talk about eventful!"
"Shut up, Sophia. Food is ready. Let us go and eat."
Sophia served a portion for each of them, including their grandmother, and they walked out of the kitchen.
"We thank the heavens and your new boss for this meal," Sophia said to her cousin as soon as they were done eating.
They were in their shared room now. Sophia was on her phone, making research about her new school. She wouldn’t want to blow her chance tomorrow and mess everything up. She had never been this scared over something. It would be such a pain if it didn’t work out after all this hard work.
"You anxious about this, cousin?" Justine asked her.
"Yes, I am. I just don’t want to blow it. I put a lot of energy into this," Sophia said to her.
"Don’t worry, cousin. Everything is going to go smoothly. I can accompany you there if you want," Justine offered.
"I would love that, to be honest. It will give me a sort of emotional support. But don’t you have somewhere to be tomorrow?" Sophia asked her cousin.
"No, I don't actually, and it will be good for me to check out that fancy school. Know if there's anyone that would want to give my cousin trouble."
Sophia laughed out. "Please, you will do no such thing. But well, great then. We best get to sleep now. We leave first thing tomorrow morning."
"Oh, come on. You, of all people, know I am not a morning person. But if it's anything to make my cousin happy, then I'll do it."
"Goodnight, cousin," Justine said as she turned off the lights.
"I really appreciate you in my life, Justine, you know that? You're like the sister I never had. Can't help but think about what life would be like without you."
Sophia didn’t get any response. She turned and saw that her cousin was fast asleep.
"Typical Justine," she said with a slight laugh. "Goodnight, cousin."
She closed her eyes to sleep. It didn’t come initially, as thoughts kept racing in her mind, but she decided to keep herself calm, knowing things would be better from here. She didn’t know when she finally fell asleep.
Sophia was jerked awake by the sound of her loud alarm. It kept on beeping non-stop.
It was 7 a.m. sharp.
"Oh hell," she cursed under her breath as she jumped up from the bed.
She hurriedly rolled over to her cousin and tapped her. "Come on, Justine! We are going to be late."
Sophia immediately stripped herself of the clothes she was wearing, revealing her bare, fit body. She quickly wrapped a towel around herself and walked into the bathroom.
She had to make the bath as quick as she could. She felt so angry with herself for oversleeping. It was mostly because she was anxious and hadn’t slept early.
She turned on the shower, and nothing came out—not a single drop of water.
"You have got to be kidding me!" she yelled out in frustration.
The water bill was yet to be paid. It was overdue, and
she and Justine had totally forgotten about it.
"You have got to be kidding me," Sophia repeated, her voice growing louder.
Chapter 6 "What's with all the yelling?" Justine said as she stretched from her bed and walked toward the bathroom. Her cousin came out of it, visibly upset. "There's no water, Justine! I can't believe this. My whole day is ruined. I knew I was going to mess it up. It sounded too good to be true anyway." Tears began to drop from Sophia's eyes. "Hey, stop this nonsense," her cousin snapped at her. "It's just water, not the end of the world." Sophia sniffled. "But how can I—" "I have a little trick," Justine interrupted, holding up a bottle of lotion and body wash. "Take this lotion and wash, apply it around your body like you're bathing. It’ll leave you smelling like flowers. You really need to learn to improvise for times like this, my dear Sophia. Now hurry up and do this; we don’t have all day!" Sophia reluctantly grabbed the lotion and wash from her cousin and walked back into the bathroom. Pouring the mixture into her hands, she began rubbing it around her body as fast
Chapter 7"Come on in!" a voice said softly from within.Sophia opened the door and stepped in. She found a pretty-looking lady whose face seemed to light up immediately upon seeing her sitting across the room. The lady looked like someone in her early forties. She had blonde hair styled into a bob and was wearing medicated glasses.Sophia guessed it had something to do with age.The table in front of the woman was covered with piles of files and books. Being a professor in this institution came with a lot of work."Good morning, Professor," Sophia greeted softly as she entered. "My name is—""Your name is Sophia Sullivan. Yes, I know. I am the one who invited you over, and I have also been expecting you," the woman interrupted Sophia without looking up from the pile of books on her table."I am sorry I kept you waiting, ma'am. I had—""It's okay, dear," the professor finally lifted her head from the table to face Sophia, interrupting her once more. "Come on, dear, have a seat."The w
Chapter 8"I got in!" Sophia yelled out to Justine immediately after she left the office. Her cousin was sitting down, waiting for her to come out."Well, don't you think I'm surprised you got in? I knew us coming here was just a matter of formality. Congratulations, cousin! I'm proud of you. If there's anyone who deserves this in the world, it's you. You will do just well in this environment." "You know this would not have been possible without all the help you put in, both physically and financially. Thank you a lot, cousin.""Please do not do that to me. Now, let's get out of here. Being around all these fancy rich folks for too long pricks my skin.""Well, you better get used to it. You are going to be visiting me here very often.""Don't count on it," Justine said as she laughed. They both walked towards the gate, back the way they came in."Ryan! Ryan! Will you get out of bed? It's afternoon, for crying out loud! How much did you have to drink last night?"Twenty-year-old Ryan
Chapter 9 She didn’t see the need to push this further; she just wanted both of them out of her office.Reaching into her drawer, she pulled out a form and handed it over to Ryan without saying a word."Umm, sorry, what am I supposed to do with this?" Ryan asked, seemingly confused. The professor, in her head, was about to cook up the nastiest response to such a dumb question from Ryan."Well, you can read, can't you?" Eleanor interrupted, saving Helena from her misery. "It clearly states there that you should indicate the course you are willing to study.""Oh!" Ryan exclaimed as he looked down at the form handed to him and began filling it out, slightly embarrassed that he looked illiterate in front of these two women."You do know what you intend on studying, don’t you?" the professor added, further embarrassing Ryan."Yes, I do," he blurted out. "I intend on studying something related to business, just like my father, so I will be able to take over his business someday."The pr
Chapter 10*"La Coune Restaurant and Bar. Pick you up at 8. Send me an address. Can’t wait to see you."* She blushed and handed the phone over to Sophia. "That is so sweet!" "You are putting on the red dress, no questions asked. Now get on your feet, let’s get you all dressed up." She fixed some of the buttons on the dress. It was one Justine had taken from her parents’ place, and it had belonged to her mother. Justine looked somewhat downcast. It had been years since she and her parents fought, and they had not spoken since. Sophia noticed this but didn’t say anything. She knew Justine didn’t like to talk about her parents. Instead, she went in for a hug. Justine put on the dress and checked herself out in the mirror. It suited her body perfectly, and she looked lovely in it. "Thank you so much, cousin. I love this." "You’re welcome. Now please order the pizza because I am starving," Sophia pressed. "I got you." Justine whipped out her phone and ordered pizza.
Chapter 11It was already nighttime at the Walsh residence. Ryan had just finished getting a second round of scolding from his mother, who was complaining about his attitude toward school and how he lacked ambition to be successful like his father. On nights like this—especially when his dad wasn’t around—the nagging would go on and on. His father usually intervened, not because he cared, but because he was always tired of the yelling."Let the boy be. His life is in his hands. If he wants to ruin it, let him. We already spoiled him." Those would be his father’s words. That was why Ryan saw it as a good thing when his mother told him to go up and pack his bags. Maybe going away to this school would be good for him after all. He would finally get his freedom from his parents, and there would be no one to supervise his movements there. Plus, he was sure some of his friends would be heading to that same school. Being a school for the wealthy, it was almost guaranteed. He had already got
Chapter 12 Ryan walked to the table , the drinks were all lined up, first to finish their 5 bottles win He and Zach stood at the table , waiting for the signal for them to beginThe club was alive with wild energy—flashing neon lights, deafening music, and the steady hum of voices blending with the bass. Ryan could feel the heat of the moment pressing against his skin as he stood face to face with Zach, his so-called friend who had just challenged his manhood in front of everyone. “Ryan, are you sure about this? You know how your mum is going to react to this. Don’t let him get to you,” Lana whispered urgently, gripping his wrist. Ryan exhaled, shaking off her concern. “It’s fine. There’s nothing I can’t handle. He wants a challenge? Then he has a challenge on his hands. Normally, I’d back down, but not in front of Taylor.” His eyes flickered toward his ex, who was watching with amusement. His ego wouldn’t let him walk away. “Just promise me you’ll drive me home if things go
Chapter 13"Why did you punch him? I mean, I know he deserves it, but you shouldn't have!" Lana said to Ryan as soon as they got to their home. The single punch from Ryan had knocked Zach out, and he was sent out by the security at the club. "I should have punched harder," Ryan muttered under his breath. "I think I need a drink, Lana. Do you have one somewhere?" "No, I don’t. Please stop this, Ryan. You’ve had enough drinks for today, and I can't help but feel guilty. Maybe I shouldn't have invited you to the party anyway. It was dumb. I guess I just wanted to see you," she admitted. "Nah, don't say that. I kind of needed it to clear my head from all this," Ryan replied."Ryan scoffed, rubbing his knuckles. "I should’ve punched him harder," he muttered under his breath, dropping onto the couch with a tired sigh. "That guy is a troublesome person. Always running his mouth like he owns the world." Lana sighed, kicking off her heels and sitting beside him. "Yeah, well, now he’s
Chapter 46Lana had just turned the corner when she saw a stranger leave her dorm room. A guy she had never seen before. Tall, dark hair, a confident stride—definitely not someone from their usual circle. She watched as he casually walked down the hall, disappearing around the corner. Her lips curled slightly, both in amusement and irritation. So this was the guy Ryan saw Jessie with. The reason Ryan had spent half the night crashing out Lana wanted to say something to Jessie about it, but then again, what was the point? She wasn’t going to stir up unnecessary drama. If Jessie wanted to sneak around with someone else while Ryan was busy convincing himself she was the love of his life, that was her business. Maybe now, at least, Ryan would finally stop obsessing over her.She shook her head and pushed open the door to the dorm.Jessie was sitting cross-legged on her bed, scrolling through her phone, but she looked up the moment Lana walked in. Her face lit up as she saw her “Hey, Lan
Chapter 45 It was quite late into the night, almost past 11, when Olivia finally returned from her date. She quietly pushed open the door to their dorm, careful not to wake Mia, who was already fast asleep. The lights in the room were turned off save for the bedside lamp, which was left on by Sophia, who was still up, scrolling through her phone.Sophia looked up as Olivia tiptoed in, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "Well, well, look who finally decided to show up," she teased, sitting up and patting the bed beside her. "So, are you going to spill, or am I going to have to drag it out of you?"Olivia grinned as she kicked off her heels, stretching her tired feet. "Oh my God, Sophia, it was amazing!" she whispered excitedly, settling onto the bed. "I don’t even know where to start.""How about from the beginning?" Sophia said, raising an eyebrow. "Glad it was that nice. Like, what even took you so long? I was beginning to think Jake kidnapped you or something."Olivia laughed
Chapter 44The walk to Jessie’s dorm was quiet, aside from Ryan mumbling to himself as he rehearsed his apology."Hey, Jessie, I was a jerk yesterday… no, that sounds too formal… Jessie, I messed up, but I really like you… ugh, too desperate."Lana shook her head, she was scrolling through her phone watching him stress over every word. "Dude, relax. Just be yourself.""Yeah, easy for you to say. You're not the one about to put your heart on the line."She smirked. "Nope and I don't think I ever will be , which is why I am here getting hurt over all this , she said to herself But I am the one who told you this was a bad idea."They reached the dorm building, and Ryan took a deep breath. "Okay. Let’s do this."Lana stood back, arms crossed. "Good luck, lover boy."Ryan shot her a glare before heading inside. As he walked down the hall, Ryan could feel his heart pounding in his chest. This was it. He’d knock, she’d answer, he’d give her the chocolates and note, they’d talk, and maybe—ju
Chapter 43Ryan figured he needed to speak to Jessie. He hadn't seen or spoken to her all day—actually, not since last night’s incident. He felt like he owed her an apology, at least for how things had transpired. Leaving her mid-conversation to answer his mom’s call had been careless. He could have handled it better. Now, as he sat at the café with Lana, he found himself distracted, tapping his fingers against the table while Lana was completely busy with taking pictures of their food. He sighed. Somehow, she had convinced him to buy lunch for both of them, and now she was treating their meal like a personal photoshoot. "Are you planning to eat that or frame it?" Ryan asked, raising an eyebrow as she adjusted the angle of her phone. Lana smirked but didn’t look up. "Food this pretty deserves appreciation." She snapped another picture. "Besides, you paid, so I get to enjoy it however I want."thanks for buying by the way , you owed me after all Ryan rolled his eyes, but his mind
Chapter 42Olivia and Mia soon arrived at the dorm room, as they burst through the door. Without a word, they both rushed to Sophia and wrapped her in a tight hug.“Whoa! What’s this for?” Sophia laughed, caught off guard but secretly enjoying the warmth of their embrace.“Can’t we just hug you?” Mia teased, pulling back slightly.“Yeah, maybe we missed you,” Olivia added with a wink.Sophia narrowed her eyes playfully. “you girls can't be serious. I saw you guys this morning.” And how come you guys always seem to come in together? “Still,” Mia said, flopping onto Sophia’s bed dramatically. “A lot can happen in a few hours, plus you got the job .” and blame Olivia for that ,she is always looking for how to follow meSophia shook her head, grinning. “You two are so weird.”“We know,” Olivia said proudly. “Now, about my date—”“Ah, yes! What time does it start?” Sophia asked, straightening up. “Let’s get you all dressed up.”Olivia glanced at her phone. “In about two hours, but I ne
Chapter 41Ryan let out a dry chuckle. Yeah, well, welcome to my life. And you've always been there Lana smiled a little at that truth There was a moment’s silence before Lana spoke again. ’Okay, but about the whole professors reporting to her thing—what are you going to do about that? You can’t let this keep happening. ’Ryan sighed. 'I don't know. I was thinking about talking to my professors and asking them not to give her updates, but let's be real—if my mom wants information, she'll find a way to get it. 'Lana nodded. 'Of course, she probably has half the faculty in her pocket. 'there is a walsh auditorium for a reasonRyan rubbed his temples. Ugh, don’t even get me started on that. At this point I’d have to assume she paid someone to keep track of my attendance.Lana smiled. 'Anytime you feel the urge to disappear, just give me a call. I'll help you stage a dramatic getaway. 'you know I have your back Ryan chuckled despite himself. "Oh yeah? What’s the plan?"Lana rubbed
Chapter 40Sophia couldn’t wait to share the news with her roommates. Her heart was still racing a little from the excitement of the interview, and the thought of actually getting the job gave her a sense of accomplishment. She quickly pulled out her phone, unlocked it, and opened their group chat."Hey guys, I might be resuming work here anytime soon," she typed, her fingers moving over the keys for a moment before hitting send. The little dot indicating that the message had been delivered made her stomach have a sensation Mia was the first to reply, sending a string of celebratory emojis. "Congratulations, girl! It was never in doubt," she wrote, and Sophia couldn’t help but grin at the message. Mia always knew how to make her feel good about herself. Sophia stared at her phone, waiting for Olivia’s response, but there was no reply yet. It seemed Olivia wasn’t online at the moment. She let out a sigh of relief, feeling like she had something to talk about when Olivia did finally
Chapter 39Sophia exhaled sharply, massaging her wrist as she stepped back. A part of her felt triumphant—seeing Katrina riled up was satisfying. But she didn’t have time for all this She needed to get to Pappies on time, and dealing with Katrina wasn’t on her to-do list. Pulling out her phone, she checked the time. She hadn’t made an official appointment, which she now wondered if she should have, but there was no going back. She had to at least show up and try. As she made her way toward Pappies, the cool afternoon breeze brushed against her skin. It was a short walk from her lecture hall, but it felt unfamiliar. This was the first time she had come to this side of the school, and she took in her surroundings as she walked. The atmosphere was quieter here, with fewer students loitering around. Most of them seemed busy, either in hushed conversations or heading toward different buildings. Sophia adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and quickened her pace. She didn’t wa
Chapter 38As the lecturer stepped into the classroom, Sophia immediately noticed that he was different from the one they had the day before. This man looked to be in his early 40s—perhaps even younger. He carried himself with an air of confidence, his neatly pressed suit giving him a polished yet approachable appearance. Sophia was a little taken aback. She had expected someone much older in this field, considering the depth of knowledge required for public health. But then again, times were changing, and younger professionals were making their mark in academia. The lecturer walked to the center of the class, set down his materials, and offered a friendly smile. “Good morning, everyone,” he greeted. “Good morning, sir,” the class responded in unison. “My name is Dr. Reynolds, and I’ll be taking you through Public Health this semester. I expect all of you to be engaged because this course isn’t just about theories—it’s about real-world applications. Public health affects eve
