Chapter 12

Ryan walked to the table , the drinks were all lined up, first to finish their 5 bottles win

He and Zach stood at the table , waiting for the signal for them to begin

The club was alive with wild energy—flashing neon lights, deafening music, and the steady hum of voices blending with the bass. Ryan could feel the heat of the moment pressing against his skin as he stood face to face with Zach, his so-called friend who had just challenged his manhood in front of everyone.

“Ryan, are you sure about this? You know how your mum is going to react to this. Don’t let him get to you,” Lana whispered urgently, gripping his wrist.

Ryan exhaled, shaking off her concern. “It’s fine. There’s nothing I can’t handle. He wants a challenge? Then he has a challenge on his hands. Normally, I’d back down, but not in front of Taylor.” His eyes flickered toward his ex, who was watching with amusement. His ego wouldn’t let him walk away. “Just promise me you’ll drive me home if things go south.”

Lana hesitated but nodded. “Fine. But don’t be stupid.”

Zach laughed, already pumping himself up. “Let’s go then!”

A crowd gathered around the table as five bottles of strong liquor were lined up for each contestant. The rules were simple—first to finish all five bottles without throwing up wins. The loser? Well, the loser just had to live with the shame.

Ryan flexed his fingers, glancing at Zach, who was smirking confidently. He’d seen Zach drink before. The guy had the tolerance of a tank, but Ryan wasn’t about to let that intimidate him. He had something to prove.

"Now!" Zach’s cousin shouted, signaling the start.

Ryan grabbed his first bottle and tilted his head back, chugging aggressively. The burn of alcohol seared his throat, but he forced it down. He slammed the bottle onto the table and reached for the next.

Zach, however, was barely fazed. He had already finished his first bottle and was halfway through his second, drinking like it was water.

The crowd was going wild. "Chug! Chug! Chug!"

Ryan fought to keep up, but by the time he was finishing his second, Zach was already popping open his third. The alcohol was hitting him hard—his vision blurred slightly, and his body swayed.

Lana’s voice cut through the noise. “Ryan, stop! You’re going to regret this!”

But he didn’t listen. He clenched his jaw and forced the third bottle down, coughing as the liquid burned through him. His stomach churned, and the room started spinning.

Zach, meanwhile, was on his fourth, grinning like the devil. "What’s wrong, Walsh? Mommy’s boy can’t handle his liquor?" he taunted, wiping his mouth.

Ryan growled and grabbed his fourth bottle, determined. He lifted it to his lips, but his hands were shaking now. The moment the liquid touched his tongue, his stomach twisted violently.

The room tilted. His head felt like it was underwater.

Zach was already on his fifth. He grinned as he downed it in one long gulp, slamming the empty bottle onto the table. "And that, my friends, is how you drink!"

The crowd erupted in cheers.

Ryan, on the other hand, felt his stomach lurch. He barely had time to turn to the side before he bent over and vomited all over the floor.

Lana rushed to his side as Zach laughed triumphantly. “Guess I was right. Lightheaded and a mummy’s boy,” Zach sneered.

Ryan groaned, wiping his mouth. His head pounded. His pride was shattered.

Lana threw a death glare at Zach before wrapping an arm around Ryan. "Come on, I’m taking you home."

As sheLana helped him out of the club, but Ryan could still hear Zach's mocking laughter in the background.

Ryan stopped Lana from taking him any further. “I can't go home like this, Lana. At least not tonight. I'm going to misbehave once I get home.”

“What are you suggesting, Ryan? That I take you to my place? You know we've got school tomorrow.”

“I know it sounds dumb. We’ll just tell my mom I had to stay over to make sure you’re okay. I’ll get a TaskRabbit to handle my clothes, and the professor at the school dare not complain if I come in late.”

The alcohol was getting to his head already, and he sounded more drunk the more he spoke.

“All right then, on your feet,” she said as she helped him up. He propped himself against her, trying to steady himself.

“Where are you going, mommy’s boy? Leaving already?” Zach jeered from behind. “That’s right, I thought so too.”

“Just leave it, Ryan. Let’s go,” Lana urged.

Ryan turned and saw Zach kissing Taylor, looking high and mighty. He had low-key been humiliated, and it infuriated him.

Without thinking, he turned around and charged at Zach. Before Zach could react, Ryan landed a punch on his face.

Zach staggered backward from the impact and fell down in an instant.

“What the hell, Ryan! Can’t you just chill out?” Taylor, his ex-girlfriend, yelled out.

ItIt was late at night, and Sophia was almost done packing up her clothes and supplies. Surprisingly, it had taken her less time than she had initially thought. She had timed herself, determined to finish quickly so she could get some rest before her first day at school.

As she folded the last piece of clothing and placed it carefully inside her suitcase, she heard the doorknob turn. The familiar creak of the door made her pause—Justine was back from her date. Sophia quickly glanced at the time on her phone; it was a few minutes past ten. Not too late, she thought, but early enough that Justine’s night probably hadn’t gone as eventful as she’d expected.

Curious, Sophia sat up and watched as Justine entered the room, still wearing the red dress. It looked slightly crinkled now, as though she had been sitting for a long time. Her expression was unreadable, and she let out a deep sigh as she kicked off her shoes.

Sophia raised an eyebrow. “So? How was it?” she asked, setting her suitcase aside.

Justine hesitated for a moment before flopping down on the bed. “It was… fine,” she replied vaguely, running a hand through her hair.

“Just fine?” Sophia pressed, leaning forward. “Come on, I need details. Was he nice? Did he make you laugh? Did he try anything weird?”

Justine chuckled softly, shaking her head. “No, he was nice. Polite. We had a good conversation, but…” She trailed off, her eyes flickering toward the ceiling.

“But?”

“I don’t know. I just didn’t feel anything special,” Justine admitted, turning on her side to face Sophia. “I mean, he’s cute and all, but I don’t think there’s a spark. You know?”

Sophia sighed dramatically. “That’s a shame. I was hoping you’d come back giddy and lovestruck. Guess I’ll have to keep living my boring life through romance novels.”

“But it’s normal for such to happen on a first date. The connection will come over time. Plus, you are going to be working together, aren’t you?”

Justine laughed, finally sitting up. “Well, guess you are right ,it might work out well She stretched, then glanced at Sophia’s packed bags. “You’re all set for tomorrow?”

“Yeah, finally.” Sophia glanced at the clock again. “I should probably get some sleep. Big day ahead.”

I "I went to the store and decided to get some supplies. Luckily for me, it was the exact amount I had in my savings account," Sophia said.

"Supplies such as?" Justine asked. "You could have told me you needed some money. You really need to talk to me about these things more often. You can use the money saved up to get other things you'll need."

"It's fine, cousin. Also, I want to talk to you—something happened at the store."

"What happened?" Justine immediately became defensive. "Did any pervert try to touch you? Describe the person's face right now, and I'll go give them a beatdown!" She said this in hurried tones without catching a breath.

Sophia chuckled softly. "Relax, please. Nothing of that sort happened. What I want to tell you about is me getting a 20% discount."

"Oh? Well, that doesn't sound like something to be troubled over. But I do have questions, like how is that even possible?" Justine eased up a little.

"It's the same way I have questions for you too," Sophia replied. "At the store, a guy named Matt was the one who attended to me. He was at the counter and sold everything to me at a 20% discount."

"Oh," Justine frowned a little. "That explains it then. But what did he want with you to offer you that much?"

"With me?" Sophia raised an eyebrow. "I think you should rephrase that question to ‘What did he want me to tell you?’ It clearly has nothing to do with me but everything to do with me being your cousin. Well, he said that it's been a while since you both hung out, you've not been returning his calls, and he was really sorry—whatever that is about."

"Please, I'm not interested in hearing such or anything for that matter," Justine sneered.

"Justine, don't be like that. He seemed nice to me, and I also promised to get you to call him. What happened between you two anyway?"

"Like I said, cousin, I'm not interested in talking about anything, and he can only dream of me calling him. You should go get some rest, Sophia."

"But Justine, I really don't want to bother you, but at least call him. I don't want to seem like I didn't put in a word. At least just do this for me," Sophia made a sad face, pressuring her cousin.

"Okay, fine, I'll do it, but not today. You should go get some rest."

"Thank you so much! Well, you too should also rest, Justine. You must be very tired—you've been out all day, from following me to school to going on this date."

Justine nodded in agreement. "You're right there. Let me go get a shower then, I'm so exhausted," she said as she stood up and walked toward the bathroom. "Oh, and by the way, how did you like the pizza? It was amazing, right?"

"Yes, it was! You should do it more often—it saves a lot of cooking stress."

Justine rolled her eyes playfully before disappearing into the bathroom.

Soph

Chapter 13"Why did you punch him? I mean, I know he deserves it, but you shouldn't have!" Lana said to Ryan as soon as they got to their home. The single punch from Ryan had knocked Zach out, and he was sent out by the security at the club. "I should have punched harder," Ryan muttered under his breath. "I think I need a drink, Lana. Do you have one somewhere?" "No, I don’t. Please stop this, Ryan. You’ve had enough drinks for today, and I can't help but feel guilty. Maybe I shouldn't have invited you to the party anyway. It was dumb. I guess I just wanted to see you," she admitted. "Nah, don't say that. I kind of needed it to clear my head from all this," Ryan replied."Ryan scoffed, rubbing his knuckles. "I should’ve punched him harder," he muttered under his breath, dropping onto the couch with a tired sigh. "That guy is a troublesome person. Always running his mouth like he owns the world." Lana sighed, kicking off her heels and sitting beside him. "Yeah, well, now he’s

Chapter 14*Get up, Ryan!” Lana’s voice rang out as she shook him. Ryan groaned in response, barely opening his eyes. His head pounded like a drum, a clear result of last night’s events. He had barely made it to bed before crashing, and now, waking up felt like torture. “Leave me alone,” he mumbled, pulling a pillow over his head. Lana rolled her eyes. “No way. You have to get up. Do you know what time it is?” “Too early,” Ryan muttered, refusing to move. Lana huffed. “**It’s already late , idiot!** We have to leave for campus today, remember you have even gotten your bags packed or something, your mum called me and I had to tell her you're staying here with me , luckily she took pity for your good deed and decided to have one of the maids pack it upBut Ryan was hardly listening to a word she said he was still feeling very groggy from sleep , He knew If he had gone home last night the current situation would have been worstRyan groaned louder this time. She scanned around trying to take it in , this was going to take a while to get used to ,but the room looked very nice The room was cozy, with three beds neatly arranged. It had a sweet centre rug that looked like fur. At one corner of the room was something that looked like an office table. It looked very good to study while she looked back at the beds again. Two were already occupied, with suitcases and personal belongings scattered around them. The air smelled faintly of lavender, probably from one of the girls’ perfumes. Or it could be the air freshener but it did leave a sweet scent on her nose One of the beds was empty— it was most likely to behersAs she stepped in further, one of the girls, her room mate was already in ,a bubbly-looking brunette with long hair , lovely eyes and she seemed to be carrying a wide smile, turned to her. “Hey! Her intelligent eyes gleamed behind thin-rimmed glasses, and she carried herself with an air of quiet authority. Sophia immediately recognized her—Professor Evelyn Carter. She was the one meant to lead the induction session for new students. But Sophia hadn’t seen her enter the room. Had she been there the whole time, silently observing her? **“I see you’re the curious type, aren’t you?”** the professor said, stepping closer. Sophia’s face burned with embarrassment. She suddenly felt foolish for letting her curiosity get the better of her. She quickly pulled her hand back, clasping it tightly to her chest as if that would erase what she had done. **“I—I’m sorry, ma’am,”** she stammered. **“I didn’t mean to—”** Professor Carter held up a hand, cutting her off with a slight smile. **“Relax, dear. Chapter 18 "You know what? I think you are rude as hell, and I'm sorry I interrupted you in the first place." Lana totally ignored her and faced the window. "What is your name, by the way?" The girl continued talking and still got no response from Lana. "Okay, listen, there are four of us in this room. If this is going to work out, we are going to need to communicate. But I'm not one to force anything. Well, in case you are listening, my name is Jessie, and there are two other girls in here. Both went for the induction and will be back soon. And I don't think they will like all this hostility. We haven't done anything wrong to you, have we? Be for real." Lana realized the girl was right. They'd done nothing to her. Maybe she should finally give it an opportunity. She decided to speak. "My name is Lana, and I'm sorry I sounded rude earlier. I was just pissed because of someone I ran into on the way here. Ryan frowned at this a little but couldn't say anything as Lana started with the questions. "So, how do you like your room, Ryan? And your roommates?" "Argh," Ryan exclaimed. "I don't want to talk about it. It's terrible." "The bed is way smaller than what I have at home. I'm used to sleeping in a king-sized bed…" Lana rolled her eyes at this. "There's no jacuzzi. How am I meant to relax?" "Let it go, man. This is a university, not a relaxation resort," Lana blurted out. She couldn't help but feel Ryan was kind of bragging to look good in front of Jessie. She had seen it play out a couple of times, so she could spot when Ryan was doing it from a mile away. "And then my roommates—they all seem to know each other, like they were passing some kind of smoke around, it seems," Ryan said as he took a slice out of his bacon.

"Sophie?? What happened at school today?"Justine was the type that was very observant with everything. She could tell when something was wrong—any slight change in Sophia's voice or attitude, and Justine would pick it up and question her. Chapter 46Lana had just turned the corner when she saw a stranger leave her dorm room. A guy she had never seen before. Tall, dark hair, a confident stride—definitely not someone from their usual circle. She watched as he casually walked down the hall, disappearing around the corner. Her lips curled slightly, both in amusement and irritation. So this was the guy Ryan saw Jessie with. The reason Ryan had spent half the night crashing out Lana wanted to say something to Jessie about it, but then again, what was the point? She wasn’t going to stir up unnecessary drama. If Jessie wanted to sneak around with someone else while Ryan was busy convincing himself she was the love of his life, that was her business. Maybe now, at least, Ryan would finally stop obsessing over her.She shook her head and pushed open the door to the dorm.Jessie was sitting cross-legged on her bed, scrolling through her phone, but she looked up the moment Lana walked in. Chapter 45 It was quite late into the night, almost past 11, when Olivia finally returned from her date. She quietly pushed open the door to their dorm, careful not to wake Mia, who was already fast asleep. The lights in the room were turned off save for the bedside lamp, which was left on by Sophia, who was still up, scrolling through her phone.Sophia looked up as Olivia tiptoed in, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "Well, well, look who finally decided to show up," she teased, sitting up and patting the bed beside her. "So, are you going to spill, or am I going to have to drag it out of you?"Olivia grinned as she kicked off her heels, stretching her tired feet. "Oh my God, Sophia, it was amazing!" she whispered excitedly, settling onto the bed. "I don’t even know where to start.""How about from the beginning?" Sophia said, raising an eyebrow. "Dude, relax. Just be yourself.""Yeah, easy for you to say. You're not the one about to put your heart on the line."She smirked. "Nope and I don't think I ever will be , which is why I am here getting hurt over all this , she said to herself But I am the one who told you this was a bad idea."They reached the dorm building, and Ryan took a deep breath. "Okay. Let’s do this."Lana stood back, arms crossed. "Good luck, lover boy."Ryan shot her a glare before heading inside. As he walked down the hall, Ryan could feel his heart pounding in his chest. Chapter 43Ryan figured he needed to speak to Jessie. He hadn't seen or spoken to her all day—actually, not since last night’s incident. He felt like he owed her an apology, at least for how things had transpired. Leaving her mid-conversation to answer his mom’s call had been careless. He could have handled it better. Now, as he sat at the café with Lana, he found himself distracted, tapping his fingers against the table while Lana was completely busy with taking pictures of their food. He sighed. Somehow, she had convinced him to buy lunch for both of them, and now she was treating their meal like a personal photoshoot. "Are you planning to eat that or frame it?" Ryan asked, raising an eyebrow as she adjusted the angle of her phone. Lana smirked but didn’t look up. "Food this pretty deserves appreciation." She snapped another picture. As she made her way toward Pappies, the cool afternoon breeze brushed against her skin. It was a short walk from her lecture hall, but it felt unfamiliar. This was the first time she had come to this side of the school, and she took in her surroundings as she walked. The atmosphere was quieter here, with fewer students loitering around. Sophia was a little taken aback. She had expected someone much older in this field, considering the depth of knowledge required for public health. But then again, times were changing, and younger professionals were making their mark in academia.
