Chapter 16
oh yes that's true Lana backed him up ,it would be sad seeing you lose your job over something so little, why don't you do all of us here a favor and get these bags ?, Lana smiled also as she said this ,she and Ryan have always been full of mischief
The janitor quickly apologized and obliged ,right away sir, he bent down and pick up the bags please forgive my ignorance, I had no idea it was that way
It's not a problem ,but you did hurt my feelings at first Ryan jeered on , acting like he didn't know what he was doing
**"Apologies once again, sir. Where did you say you were headed?"**
Ryan let out a dramatic sigh. **"The dorms. I need to get to my room this instant."**
Henry, the janitor, gave a small nod of understanding. "I know where it is. It’s just around the block. This way."** He turned and started walking ahead of them at a steady pace.
Ryan smirked and glanced at Lana, who was eyeing him with thinly veiled disapproval.
“You really are a crook," she muttered, shaking her head. **"Look at what you're putting this poor man through." She bumped him lightly with her shoulder as they walked.
Ryan raised his hands in mock innocence. **"Me? A crook? That’s unfair. Besides, you’re just as guilty as I am."
Lana scoffed. "Oh, please! And how exactly am I guilty?"
Ryan grinned. "Look at that act you put up. You were pretending to be all disapproving, but deep down, you were enjoying every second of it."
Lana rolled her eyes. *"I was just trying to corroborate the nonsense you were pulling. Don't even try to make me an accomplice."
Ryan chuckled. " Too late. You’re already in too deep."
Lana shook her head but smiled slightly, conceding the playful banter.
They followed Henry as he led them down a paved path lined with trees and benches. A few students passed by, chatting and laughing, some carrying bags or checking their phones. The university grounds buzzed with life, a mix of fresh arrivals and returning students settling in.
After a few minutes, Henry stopped and motioned toward the buildings in front of them.
*"We’re here,"he said, pointing ahead. "The buildings over there, across the fence, are the ladies’ dormitories. And this one here is the male dormitory."
Ryan glanced at the buildings, nodding in approval. They looked well-maintained, with large windows and clean brick exteriors. The pathways were busy with students hauling suitcases, greeting friends, and finding their rooms.
"All right," Ryan said, stretching his arms. *"Allow me a moment to say a few words to my dear friend here." He turned to Lana, flashing his signature smirk. “Henry, you can go ahead and take the bags upstairs."
Henry gave a small nod. "Which room, sir?"
Ryan pulled out his phone, scrolling through his emails. *"Room 7."
Henry took up the bags without another word and started toward the entrance.
Ryan turned back to Lana, who was watching him with a mixture of amusement and exasperation.
"So, this is it, huh?"he said, crossing her arms. " Finally settling into university life."
Ryan sighed dramatically. "Yeah. Hard to believe, isn’t it? Feels like just yesterday we were talking about coming here, and now it’s happening."
Lana nodded. "It’s a new chapter. You better not cause too much trouble, Ryan."
Ryan placed a hand on his chest, feigning offense. "Me? Trouble? Lana, I am a respectable young man with nothing but good intentions."
Lana raised an eyebrow. *"Right. And I’m the Queen of England."
Ryan laughed. "Hey, I’m just saying—maybe I’ll surprise you. Maybe I’ll be a model student."
Lana smirked. "I’ll believe it when I see it.
They stood there for a moment, both taking in their new reality. The playful banter was familiar, but beneath it, there was a sense of change—an unspoken understanding that things were going to be different now.
Ryan ran a hand through his hair. **"Well, guess I should head up and see what kind of roommate I got."
Lana nodded. **"And I should go find my room too. But don’t think this is the last time you’ll be seeing me. I’ll be keeping an eye on you, Walsh."**
Ryan smirked. **"I wouldn’t have it any other way, dear Lana."**
She shook her head with a chuckle. **"Goodbye, Ryan. Try not to make Henry carry your bags every time you need something."**
Ryan grinned. **"No promises."
With that, they parted ways—Lana heading toward the women's dorms while Ryan turned toward his own. As he made his way inside, he couldn’t help but feel a rush of excitement. A new environment, new people, new opportunities—it was going to be an interesting ride.
And knowing himself, he would make sure of that.
Sophia decided to go to the lecture halls. There was going to be an induction for new students—it was something she couldn't miss. A chance to interact with the members of her department and also get to understand what the professors were all about.
She told her roommates where she was going and bade them goodbye. Then, she went out of her room and began heading towards the Faculty of Public Health. In her hands, she held the magazine she had gotten earlier. It had been of great help to her. Now, trouble seeing the *click* very well, she felt more at ease at this point than she usually did.
Sophia opened the magazine, looking for directions to the Department of Public Health. She was so occupied with the magazine that she didn't see Lana coming along. Lana, who was also fiddling with her phone screen, didn't see Sophia either.
They both bumped into each other, and Lana's phone fell out of her hand from the impact. The phone fell to the ground, but luckily, it didn't crack. As Lana bent down to pick up the phone, Sophia called out, "Oh my God! I'm so sorry!"
"What's wrong with you? Don't you watch your step or at least watch where you are going?" Lana groaned in frustration. "You're lucky it didn't get cracked or something else. It would have been trouble for you. Please watch where you go next time—you’re lucky my phone didn't break."
"I said I'm sorry! Calm down, please!" Sophia yelled. "You made your point already!" She felt Lana was just dragging it at this point.
"You're making it sound like it's only me. We both bumped into each other! You weren’t watching either—you were distracted! So let's just leave this and stop dragging it," Sophia added, stopping to catch her breath.
Lana didn't respond. She only nodded her head and walked past her.
Sophia was reeling from the incident as she walked on. Had she just confronted someone? She was usually too shy to speak but didn’t know where the energy came from. But she was glad she did—Justine would be proud to hear this.
Sophia arrived at the Faculty of Public Health and saw that the lecture room was empty. She was the only one there, and she wondered if it had been canceled.
She opened her phone and logged into the school's portal to confirm. It was still clearly stated there: *Induction by 1 PM.* She checked the time—it was 12:39.
---
It wasn't cancelled she had just been there early as assumed everyone would be too like her
Out of boredom she began walking around the lecture room , it was bigger than the pictures she has seen online of it
As a matter of fact pictures didn't really do just to this hall ,the details they way it was each of the skeletons in the hall was well crafted , she marvelled at it
She kept on touching each she could lay her hands on getting carried away in the process
Then, her eyes landed on something particularly unsettling—a human brain. It was perfectly preserved, suspended in formaldehyde that gave it an almost surreal appearance. She hesitated, her curiosity peaked Slowly, she stretched out her hand, wanting to get a closer look.
**"I would advise you not to touch that!"**
The sudden voice from behind startl
ed her so much that she nearly dropped her phone. she spun around, wide-eyed, to face whoever had spoken.
Chapter 17A woman stood there, watching her with an amused but knowing expression. She was tall, with sharp yet graceful features, wearing a crisp lab coat over a dark blouse. Her intelligent eyes gleamed behind thin-rimmed glasses, and she carried herself with an air of quiet authority. Sophia immediately recognized her—Professor Evelyn Carter. She was the one meant to lead the induction session for new students. But Sophia hadn’t seen her enter the room. Had she been there the whole time, silently observing her? **“I see you’re the curious type, aren’t you?”** the professor said, stepping closer. Sophia’s face burned with embarrassment. She suddenly felt foolish for letting her curiosity get the better of her. She quickly pulled her hand back, clasping it tightly to her chest as if that would erase what she had done. **“I—I’m sorry, ma’am,”** she stammered. **“I didn’t mean to—”** Professor Carter held up a hand, cutting her off with a slight smile. **“Relax, dear. I’m no
Chapter 18 "You know what? I think you are rude as hell, and I'm sorry I interrupted you in the first place." Lana totally ignored her and faced the window. "What is your name, by the way?" The girl continued talking and still got no response from Lana. "Okay, listen, there are four of us in this room. If this is going to work out, we are going to need to communicate. But I'm not one to force anything. Well, in case you are listening, my name is Jessie, and there are two other girls in here. Both went for the induction and will be back soon. And I don't think they will like all this hostility. We haven't done anything wrong to you, have we? Be for real." Lana realized the girl was right. They'd done nothing to her. Maybe she should finally give it an opportunity. She decided to speak. "My name is Lana, and I'm sorry I sounded rude earlier. I was just pissed because of someone I ran into on the way here. She kind of ruined my phone and my mood by extension. Plus, the se
Chapter 19And he definitely seemed to have an interest in Jessie. "I think that is enough introductions," Lana said as she cut off their conversation. Ryan frowned at this a little but couldn't say anything as Lana started with the questions. "So, how do you like your room, Ryan? And your roommates?" "Argh," Ryan exclaimed. "I don't want to talk about it. It's terrible." "The bed is way smaller than what I have at home. I'm used to sleeping in a king-sized bed…" Lana rolled her eyes at this. "There's no jacuzzi. How am I meant to relax?" "Let it go, man. This is a university, not a relaxation resort," Lana blurted out. She couldn't help but feel Ryan was kind of bragging to look good in front of Jessie. She had seen it play out a couple of times, so she could spot when Ryan was doing it from a mile away. "And then my roommates—they all seem to know each other, like they were passing some kind of smoke around, it seems," Ryan said as he took a slice out of his bacon.
Chapter 20She was jolted from her thoughts by the sound of her phone ringing."Who could it be?" she said to herself as the caller ID displayed on the screen. It was Justine. She immediately sat up."Hey, cousin!!" Justine's familiar voice called over from the other end. "How was the first day at school? Sorry I missed your call, was busy helping Grandma take a bath. Not to sound lazy, but I miss having you around already."Sophia laughed out as she heard this—one of the few times she had smiled genuinely in this shitty day."Well, school is fine, and about Grandma, don't worry, you will get used to it with time," Sophia replied."Why do you sound like that?" her cousin asked. "Sophie?? What happened at school today?"Justine was the type that was very observant with everything. She could tell when something was wrong—any slight change in Sophia's voice or attitude, and Justine would pick it up and question her. At this point, it was clearly looking like something was off."Nothing i
Chapter 21Eleanor Walsh was an industrious and ambitious woman with a competitive spirit. It was one of the reasons she was well respected among her peers. She had a relentless drive, always aiming to outdo herself and those around her. Settling for mediocrity was never an option. While others dreamed in silence, she turned her aspirations into action, making bold moves even in the face of uncertainty. At an early age, Eleanor was already pitching business ideas to huge firms and companies, waiting for a positive response. Some would listen, entertained by her confidence, while others dismissed her outright, finding her too young, too eager. But rejection never deterred her. She had a sharp mind and an even sharper will. If one door closed, she would knock on another—until she found the one that opened. She wasn't the type to be played with. Born into a fairly wealthy family, Eleanor had always been provided for, but comfort never softened her ambition. Her parents, especially he
Chapter 22Lana was patiently waiting downstairs for Ryan to come out. Surely, he couldn't still be asleep at such a time. She had called him, but it had not gone through—her best guess was the poor reception messing with the cell service. She decided to go up to his dorm. She had his room number, and so did he. The door was open when she got there, and just like she had guessed, he was still asleep. The other roommates were lodged in a corner of the room, some girls laying bare on their bodies. Blunt heads of cigarettes and marijuana filled the floor. What a terrible state the room was in! She just hoped Ryan hadn't joined them in the act."Wake up, Ryan. Wake up!" Lana was shaking him violently until his eyes managed to open."Hey, Lana. What are you doing here?" His eyes were heavy from sleep, a sight Lana was already getting used to."I shouldn't be here, but a certain someone can't set an alarm or grow up to know that life is getting serious!""Hey, who's this? Is she your mother
Chapter 23Sohpia took a deep breath and sat down , it had gone better than she anticipated Wow I am so sorry about your grandmother Mrs Jameson called ,but wait did you say your name was Sophia? The professor asked again ..the same one who's results was off the charts and we had to offer her a scholarship here Yes that is me professor Sophia responded to her feeling confident all of a sudden"Well, it’s great to have you here. When I heard you would be joining this school, I didn’t know it would be our faculty. We’re lucky to have your brain in our presence," Mrs. Jameson teased with a warm smile, her eyes all over Sophia with admiration."Thank you, ma," Sophia responded with a bright, polite smile, though inside, her nerves still fluttered. She had worked tirelessly to be here, and hearing praise from a professor on her first day felt like validation."So she’s a charity case," a voice scoffed from the front "No wonder she looks so out of place."it all makes sense to me n
Chapter 24A soft, almost melodic voice. Ryan turned around, his frustration still lingering—until he saw her. Jessie. Lana’s roommate from yesterday. Just like that, his anger evaporated. His frown was replaced with something softer, something closer to amusement. He couldn't believe his luck ,just when he had been troubling Lana to help him out with her. He hadn’t expected to see her again so soon, and definitely not like this. She stood a few feet away, arms crossed, looking at him with mild curiosity. She had that same confident but effortless air about her, like she wasn’t trying too hard to be noticed—yet somehow, he couldn’t look away. His luck today might not have been all bad after all. "Jessie," he said, trying (and failing) to hide his excitement. "Didn’t think I’d run into you again so soon." I literally asked after you from lanaJessie raised an eyebrow. "I figured as much. You did seem too interested in talking last night." Ryan chuckled, scratching the
Chapter 46Lana had just turned the corner when she saw a stranger leave her dorm room. A guy she had never seen before. Tall, dark hair, a confident stride—definitely not someone from their usual circle. She watched as he casually walked down the hall, disappearing around the corner. Her lips curled slightly, both in amusement and irritation. So this was the guy Ryan saw Jessie with. The reason Ryan had spent half the night crashing out Lana wanted to say something to Jessie about it, but then again, what was the point? She wasn’t going to stir up unnecessary drama. If Jessie wanted to sneak around with someone else while Ryan was busy convincing himself she was the love of his life, that was her business. Maybe now, at least, Ryan would finally stop obsessing over her.She shook her head and pushed open the door to the dorm.Jessie was sitting cross-legged on her bed, scrolling through her phone, but she looked up the moment Lana walked in. Her face lit up as she saw her “Hey, Lan
Chapter 45 It was quite late into the night, almost past 11, when Olivia finally returned from her date. She quietly pushed open the door to their dorm, careful not to wake Mia, who was already fast asleep. The lights in the room were turned off save for the bedside lamp, which was left on by Sophia, who was still up, scrolling through her phone.Sophia looked up as Olivia tiptoed in, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "Well, well, look who finally decided to show up," she teased, sitting up and patting the bed beside her. "So, are you going to spill, or am I going to have to drag it out of you?"Olivia grinned as she kicked off her heels, stretching her tired feet. "Oh my God, Sophia, it was amazing!" she whispered excitedly, settling onto the bed. "I don’t even know where to start.""How about from the beginning?" Sophia said, raising an eyebrow. "Glad it was that nice. Like, what even took you so long? I was beginning to think Jake kidnapped you or something."Olivia laughed
Chapter 44The walk to Jessie’s dorm was quiet, aside from Ryan mumbling to himself as he rehearsed his apology."Hey, Jessie, I was a jerk yesterday… no, that sounds too formal… Jessie, I messed up, but I really like you… ugh, too desperate."Lana shook her head, she was scrolling through her phone watching him stress over every word. "Dude, relax. Just be yourself.""Yeah, easy for you to say. You're not the one about to put your heart on the line."She smirked. "Nope and I don't think I ever will be , which is why I am here getting hurt over all this , she said to herself But I am the one who told you this was a bad idea."They reached the dorm building, and Ryan took a deep breath. "Okay. Let’s do this."Lana stood back, arms crossed. "Good luck, lover boy."Ryan shot her a glare before heading inside. As he walked down the hall, Ryan could feel his heart pounding in his chest. This was it. He’d knock, she’d answer, he’d give her the chocolates and note, they’d talk, and maybe—ju
Chapter 43Ryan figured he needed to speak to Jessie. He hadn't seen or spoken to her all day—actually, not since last night’s incident. He felt like he owed her an apology, at least for how things had transpired. Leaving her mid-conversation to answer his mom’s call had been careless. He could have handled it better. Now, as he sat at the café with Lana, he found himself distracted, tapping his fingers against the table while Lana was completely busy with taking pictures of their food. He sighed. Somehow, she had convinced him to buy lunch for both of them, and now she was treating their meal like a personal photoshoot. "Are you planning to eat that or frame it?" Ryan asked, raising an eyebrow as she adjusted the angle of her phone. Lana smirked but didn’t look up. "Food this pretty deserves appreciation." She snapped another picture. "Besides, you paid, so I get to enjoy it however I want."thanks for buying by the way , you owed me after all Ryan rolled his eyes, but his mind
Chapter 42Olivia and Mia soon arrived at the dorm room, as they burst through the door. Without a word, they both rushed to Sophia and wrapped her in a tight hug.“Whoa! What’s this for?” Sophia laughed, caught off guard but secretly enjoying the warmth of their embrace.“Can’t we just hug you?” Mia teased, pulling back slightly.“Yeah, maybe we missed you,” Olivia added with a wink.Sophia narrowed her eyes playfully. “you girls can't be serious. I saw you guys this morning.” And how come you guys always seem to come in together? “Still,” Mia said, flopping onto Sophia’s bed dramatically. “A lot can happen in a few hours, plus you got the job .” and blame Olivia for that ,she is always looking for how to follow meSophia shook her head, grinning. “You two are so weird.”“We know,” Olivia said proudly. “Now, about my date—”“Ah, yes! What time does it start?” Sophia asked, straightening up. “Let’s get you all dressed up.”Olivia glanced at her phone. “In about two hours, but I ne
Chapter 41Ryan let out a dry chuckle. Yeah, well, welcome to my life. And you've always been there Lana smiled a little at that truth There was a moment’s silence before Lana spoke again. ’Okay, but about the whole professors reporting to her thing—what are you going to do about that? You can’t let this keep happening. ’Ryan sighed. 'I don't know. I was thinking about talking to my professors and asking them not to give her updates, but let's be real—if my mom wants information, she'll find a way to get it. 'Lana nodded. 'Of course, she probably has half the faculty in her pocket. 'there is a walsh auditorium for a reasonRyan rubbed his temples. Ugh, don’t even get me started on that. At this point I’d have to assume she paid someone to keep track of my attendance.Lana smiled. 'Anytime you feel the urge to disappear, just give me a call. I'll help you stage a dramatic getaway. 'you know I have your back Ryan chuckled despite himself. "Oh yeah? What’s the plan?"Lana rubbed
Chapter 40Sophia couldn’t wait to share the news with her roommates. Her heart was still racing a little from the excitement of the interview, and the thought of actually getting the job gave her a sense of accomplishment. She quickly pulled out her phone, unlocked it, and opened their group chat."Hey guys, I might be resuming work here anytime soon," she typed, her fingers moving over the keys for a moment before hitting send. The little dot indicating that the message had been delivered made her stomach have a sensation Mia was the first to reply, sending a string of celebratory emojis. "Congratulations, girl! It was never in doubt," she wrote, and Sophia couldn’t help but grin at the message. Mia always knew how to make her feel good about herself. Sophia stared at her phone, waiting for Olivia’s response, but there was no reply yet. It seemed Olivia wasn’t online at the moment. She let out a sigh of relief, feeling like she had something to talk about when Olivia did finally
Chapter 39Sophia exhaled sharply, massaging her wrist as she stepped back. A part of her felt triumphant—seeing Katrina riled up was satisfying. But she didn’t have time for all this She needed to get to Pappies on time, and dealing with Katrina wasn’t on her to-do list. Pulling out her phone, she checked the time. She hadn’t made an official appointment, which she now wondered if she should have, but there was no going back. She had to at least show up and try. As she made her way toward Pappies, the cool afternoon breeze brushed against her skin. It was a short walk from her lecture hall, but it felt unfamiliar. This was the first time she had come to this side of the school, and she took in her surroundings as she walked. The atmosphere was quieter here, with fewer students loitering around. Most of them seemed busy, either in hushed conversations or heading toward different buildings. Sophia adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and quickened her pace. She didn’t wa
Chapter 38As the lecturer stepped into the classroom, Sophia immediately noticed that he was different from the one they had the day before. This man looked to be in his early 40s—perhaps even younger. He carried himself with an air of confidence, his neatly pressed suit giving him a polished yet approachable appearance. Sophia was a little taken aback. She had expected someone much older in this field, considering the depth of knowledge required for public health. But then again, times were changing, and younger professionals were making their mark in academia. The lecturer walked to the center of the class, set down his materials, and offered a friendly smile. “Good morning, everyone,” he greeted. “Good morning, sir,” the class responded in unison. “My name is Dr. Reynolds, and I’ll be taking you through Public Health this semester. I expect all of you to be engaged because this course isn’t just about theories—it’s about real-world applications. Public health affects eve
