Chapter 17
A woman stood there, watching her with an amused but knowing expression. She was tall, with sharp yet graceful features, wearing a crisp lab coat over a dark blouse. Her intelligent eyes gleamed behind thin-rimmed glasses, and she carried herself with an air of quiet authority.
Sophia immediately recognized her—Professor Evelyn Carter. She was the one meant to lead the induction session for new students. But Sophia hadn’t seen her enter the room. Had she been there the whole time, silently observing her?
**“I see you’re the curious type, aren’t you?”** the professor said, stepping closer.
Sophia’s face burned with embarrassment. She suddenly felt foolish for letting her curiosity get the better of her. She quickly pulled her hand back, clasping it tightly to her chest as if that would erase what she had done.
**“I—I’m sorry, ma’am,”** she stammered. **“I didn’t mean to—”**
Professor Carter held up a hand, cutting her off with a slight smile. **“Relax, dear. I’m not going to bite you.”**
Sophia exhaled, shoulders sagging in relief.
**“Curiosity isn’t a bad thing,”** the professor continued, studying her with interest. **“In fact, it’s the very foundation of science. I myself have always been a curious mind, just like you.”**
Sophia swallowed, still feeling a little nervous. **“My name is Sophia,”** she finally said. **“Umm… I was here for the induction, but I didn’t see anyone around, so I decided to explore a little.”**
Professor Carter nodded knowingly. **“That explains it. You’re early. The others will be here soon.”**
Sophia glanced at the brain in the jar again. **“So, is that… real?”** she asked hesitantly.
**“It is,”** the professor replied, stepping beside her. **“A preserved human brain, donated for research. It’s been here for decades.”**
Sophia felt a strange mix of fascination and discomfort. **“Why do we preserve things like this?”**
The professor smiled. **“That’s an excellent question.”** She gestured toward the shelves around them. **“Specimens like these allow us to study anatomy in ways that textbooks alone never could. They help us understand how the human body functions—and what happens when things go wrong.”**
Sophia nodded slowly, absorbing the information.
Professor Carter observed her for a moment before asking, **“Tell me, Sophia, what do you hope to achieve by studying here?”**
The question caught her off guard. **“I—I guess I just want to learn as much as I can,”** she admitted. **“I’ve always been interested in how things work, especially in the medical field.”**
The professor’s expression softened. **“A thirst for knowledge is a powerful thing. But remember, true learning isn’t just about memorizing facts. It’s about asking questions, challenging what you know, and never being afraid to explore—responsibly, of course.”**
Sophia smiled, feeling a little more at ease. **“I’ll keep that in mind.”**
Just then, the sound of voices echoed down the hallway, signaling the arrival of the other students.
**“Looks like it’s time to begin,”** Professor Carter said. She gestured toward the door. **“Shall we?”**
Sophia nodded, feeling a newfound excitement. Maybe she had just embarrassed herself, but she had also learned something important—that curiosity, when nurtured, could open doors to incredible discoveries.
People trooped in, and they were all seated. Sophia glanced around— they were all newcomers here, just like her.
It began, and they were briefed on the things that go on in their department. About two more professors joined Carter as they addressed them.
A few minutes later, they were asked to network and meet with their fellow coursemates, exchanging pleasantries. It was a fun thing to do. Sophia felt comfortable seeing people with like minds as hers. She felt just right here, being with people with ambition like hers.
Classes were to start officially tomorrow, and with all she'd seen today, she wouldn't miss it for the world.

The janitor dropped off Ryan's bags just at the door. Ryan was proud of himself, having managed to use his family's name to con the man into working for him.
"Is there anything else I can do for you, good sire?" the janitor asked.
Ryan wasn't one to let an opportunity like this slip from his hands. He didn't actually need the services of the janitor but sought to collect his number so he could use him for future purposes.
"Oh no, not really, I do not," Ryan said to him and pulled out his phone. "Why don't you put your phone number here so I can reach you? I really must tell my parents about you—you have been far too kind."
The janitor smiled with joy as he inputted his digits on the phone.
"You'll hear from me soon enough," Ryan said.
The janitor thanked him once again and went back to his duty.
Ryan opened the door and stepped into the room. His roommates were already in—random strangers he had no idea about. There were three in the room, and they all seemed to look older than him.
---
**"Well, hello there, stranger."**
The voice came from one of the guys lounging on a battered couch, half-empty beer bottles littering the floor around him. He had brown, dusty hair that looked like it hadn't been washed in days, and his ripped physique suggested he spent time in the gym—though his current state of relaxation hinted at anything but discipline. He held a bottle of beer in one hand as he pushed himself up and walked toward Ryan.
Before Ryan could react, the guy slung an arm over his shoulder, the scent of alcohol and something stronger lingering on his breath.
**"You're the roommate, aren't you?"** he asked, his voice slightly slurred.
Ryan took in the guy’s small, bloodshot eyes—ones that carried a familiar haziness. He had seen that same look before, in one of Zach's cousins who had been deep into drugs.
Not wanting to cause trouble, Ryan forced a polite smile and gently removed the guy’s arm from his shoulder.
**"Yeah,"** he said simply. **"I’m the new roommate."**
The guy smirked, unfazed, and took another swig from his beer. **"Welcome to the jungle, man nice to meet you*
Ryan didn’t bother responding. Instead, he scanned the messy dorm, noting the disorder. Clothes were thrown carelessly over chairs, the floor was covered with discarded food wrappers, and the faint smell of marijuana was in the air,he suspected they just finished smoking. The walls were covered in band posters and crude graffiti, and the coffee table in the middle of the room was cluttered with ashtrays, cigarette packs, and crushed beer cans.
He wondered how it was already such a mess if they've been here for only one day ,unless they weren't fresh students and had been here a long time
He made his way to the only vacant bed he could find, relieved to see that at least he had a space of his own—until he noticed the traces of weed scattered across the sheets.
He sighed heavily, brushing the remnants off with the back of his hand before sitting down.
This was going to be rough.
Ryan hadn't bothered introducing himself properly or asking for his roommates’ names. He already knew he wasn’t going to like it here.
The guy who had greeted him plopped back down on the couch, lighting up a joint and passing it to another roommate, who lazily took a drag. They both chuckled at something on the TV, seemingly unaware of Ryan’s discomfort.
Not wanting to engage with them, Ryan pulled out his phone and his headset.
He scrolled through his apps before opening one of his favorite video games.
**"Hey, new guy, you drink?"** the guy with the beer called out, glancing in his direction.
Ryan didn’t look up. **"He was avoiding alcohol for now ,not with the way it had messed up his head the past few days , plus he didn't know what these guys could be drinking, there was a possibility it was laced with something
He decided to politely decline it.
"No, man, thanks, I'm good," he said softly.
The guy shrugged and turned back to the other roommates, mumbling something Ryan couldn’t quite catch.
Tuning out the noise, Ryan slipped on his headset and pressed play on his game.
If this was what his new living situation looked like, he figured he might as well find an escape—at least until he figured out what to do next.
Lana was still fuming after having bumped into Sophia. She didn't know her but hadn’t liked the way she confronted her.
Lana wasn't always good with females. She seemed to carry this sort of anger towards them. It was no surprise she didn't have any female friends. She always had this notion that she would rather hang around guys than be in a group of women.
But she was going to have to change her perspective, especially now that she was in a female hostel.
She got to her room and hesitated at the door, unsure how she was going to exchange greetings with the people inside. She took a deep breath and finally opened the door. To her surprise, the room was empty.
"Well, that is a relief," she said to herself, then quickly scanned around the room. People had been here, but it seemed they were gone now.
"Well, that settles it. All I have to do is stay in my bed and not talk to anyone, hoping they keep their distance too."
She sat on the unoccupied bed. The room was quite hot, and the bed close to the window was taken. She wished she had gotten here earlier—and she would have if not for having Ryan to worry about.
She smiled at the thought of him, then brought out her phone to text him. It was then she noticed the crack on her phone screen. She hadn't seen it earlier.
She sighed loudly.
"That stupid girl! And she still had the guts to confront me. She better pray I don't see her around—it won't be funny," Lana cussed under her breath.
She texted Ryan: Hey you? Are you in your room yet? How is it? Would you believe some dumb girl broke my phone? Then she hit send.
The message didn’t deliver. The reception was poor.
"Bloody hell!" she cursed out loud.
"Hey, language!" she heard someone say.
"Language, please. It's quite too early to be using curse words, don’t you think?" the person continued.
Lana was wrong about her roommates being out—there was someone in the bathroom. She heard the flush sounds, and the person stepp
ed out.
"How about you mind your business? What concerns you with any cuss words I use?" Lana snapped at her, for no reason at all.
Chapter 18 "You know what? I think you are rude as hell, and I'm sorry I interrupted you in the first place." Lana totally ignored her and faced the window. "What is your name, by the way?" The girl continued talking and still got no response from Lana. "Okay, listen, there are four of us in this room. If this is going to work out, we are going to need to communicate. But I'm not one to force anything. Well, in case you are listening, my name is Jessie, and there are two other girls in here. Both went for the induction and will be back soon. And I don't think they will like all this hostility. We haven't done anything wrong to you, have we? Be for real." Lana realized the girl was right. They'd done nothing to her. Maybe she should finally give it an opportunity. She decided to speak. "My name is Lana, and I'm sorry I sounded rude earlier. I was just pissed because of someone I ran into on the way here. She kind of ruined my phone and my mood by extension. Plus, the se
Chapter 19And he definitely seemed to have an interest in Jessie. "I think that is enough introductions," Lana said as she cut off their conversation. Ryan frowned at this a little but couldn't say anything as Lana started with the questions. "So, how do you like your room, Ryan? And your roommates?" "Argh," Ryan exclaimed. "I don't want to talk about it. It's terrible." "The bed is way smaller than what I have at home. I'm used to sleeping in a king-sized bed…" Lana rolled her eyes at this. "There's no jacuzzi. How am I meant to relax?" "Let it go, man. This is a university, not a relaxation resort," Lana blurted out. She couldn't help but feel Ryan was kind of bragging to look good in front of Jessie. She had seen it play out a couple of times, so she could spot when Ryan was doing it from a mile away. "And then my roommates—they all seem to know each other, like they were passing some kind of smoke around, it seems," Ryan said as he took a slice out of his bacon.
Chapter 20She was jolted from her thoughts by the sound of her phone ringing."Who could it be?" she said to herself as the caller ID displayed on the screen. It was Justine. She immediately sat up."Hey, cousin!!" Justine's familiar voice called over from the other end. "How was the first day at school? Sorry I missed your call, was busy helping Grandma take a bath. Not to sound lazy, but I miss having you around already."Sophia laughed out as she heard this—one of the few times she had smiled genuinely in this shitty day."Well, school is fine, and about Grandma, don't worry, you will get used to it with time," Sophia replied."Why do you sound like that?" her cousin asked. "Sophie?? What happened at school today?"Justine was the type that was very observant with everything. She could tell when something was wrong—any slight change in Sophia's voice or attitude, and Justine would pick it up and question her. At this point, it was clearly looking like something was off."Nothing i
Chapter 21Eleanor Walsh was an industrious and ambitious woman with a competitive spirit. It was one of the reasons she was well respected among her peers. She had a relentless drive, always aiming to outdo herself and those around her. Settling for mediocrity was never an option. While others dreamed in silence, she turned her aspirations into action, making bold moves even in the face of uncertainty. At an early age, Eleanor was already pitching business ideas to huge firms and companies, waiting for a positive response. Some would listen, entertained by her confidence, while others dismissed her outright, finding her too young, too eager. But rejection never deterred her. She had a sharp mind and an even sharper will. If one door closed, she would knock on another—until she found the one that opened. She wasn't the type to be played with. Born into a fairly wealthy family, Eleanor had always been provided for, but comfort never softened her ambition. Her parents, especially he
Chapter 22Lana was patiently waiting downstairs for Ryan to come out. Surely, he couldn't still be asleep at such a time. She had called him, but it had not gone through—her best guess was the poor reception messing with the cell service. She decided to go up to his dorm. She had his room number, and so did he. The door was open when she got there, and just like she had guessed, he was still asleep. The other roommates were lodged in a corner of the room, some girls laying bare on their bodies. Blunt heads of cigarettes and marijuana filled the floor. What a terrible state the room was in! She just hoped Ryan hadn't joined them in the act."Wake up, Ryan. Wake up!" Lana was shaking him violently until his eyes managed to open."Hey, Lana. What are you doing here?" His eyes were heavy from sleep, a sight Lana was already getting used to."I shouldn't be here, but a certain someone can't set an alarm or grow up to know that life is getting serious!""Hey, who's this? Is she your mother
Chapter 23Sohpia took a deep breath and sat down , it had gone better than she anticipated Wow I am so sorry about your grandmother Mrs Jameson called ,but wait did you say your name was Sophia? The professor asked again ..the same one who's results was off the charts and we had to offer her a scholarship here Yes that is me professor Sophia responded to her feeling confident all of a sudden"Well, it’s great to have you here. When I heard you would be joining this school, I didn’t know it would be our faculty. We’re lucky to have your brain in our presence," Mrs. Jameson teased with a warm smile, her eyes all over Sophia with admiration."Thank you, ma," Sophia responded with a bright, polite smile, though inside, her nerves still fluttered. She had worked tirelessly to be here, and hearing praise from a professor on her first day felt like validation."So she’s a charity case," a voice scoffed from the front "No wonder she looks so out of place."it all makes sense to me n
Chapter 24A soft, almost melodic voice. Ryan turned around, his frustration still lingering—until he saw her. Jessie. Lana’s roommate from yesterday. Just like that, his anger evaporated. His frown was replaced with something softer, something closer to amusement. He couldn't believe his luck ,just when he had been troubling Lana to help him out with her. He hadn’t expected to see her again so soon, and definitely not like this. She stood a few feet away, arms crossed, looking at him with mild curiosity. She had that same confident but effortless air about her, like she wasn’t trying too hard to be noticed—yet somehow, he couldn’t look away. His luck today might not have been all bad after all. "Jessie," he said, trying (and failing) to hide his excitement. "Didn’t think I’d run into you again so soon." I literally asked after you from lanaJessie raised an eyebrow. "I figured as much. You did seem too interested in talking last night." Ryan chuckled, scratching the
Chapter 25 Her own childhood had been… different. Birthdays were kind of alien to her—sometimes just her, her grandmother, and Justine sitting at the tiny dining table with a single cupcake between them. No extravagant cakes, no mountain of presents. Just the three of them and the quiet understanding that love didn’t need to be expensive. She pulled her gaze away from the screen and stared at the ceiling. It wasn’t fair. But then again, life had never really been fair. She exhaled and reached for another chip, chewing slowly as she stared at the dim glow of her phone screen. Maybe it was pointless to dwell on things like this. From a comment on the page, she stumbled upon a picture that looked familiar. She clicked on it and knew she was right in an instant—it was the mean girl she had to give all her savings to. Lana. She, too, seemed the wealthy type, but nothing close to Katrina, as her page was filled with pictures of her at all sorts of parties, drinks in hand. On
Chapter 46Lana had just turned the corner when she saw a stranger leave her dorm room. A guy she had never seen before. Tall, dark hair, a confident stride—definitely not someone from their usual circle. She watched as he casually walked down the hall, disappearing around the corner. Her lips curled slightly, both in amusement and irritation. So this was the guy Ryan saw Jessie with. The reason Ryan had spent half the night crashing out Lana wanted to say something to Jessie about it, but then again, what was the point? She wasn’t going to stir up unnecessary drama. If Jessie wanted to sneak around with someone else while Ryan was busy convincing himself she was the love of his life, that was her business. Maybe now, at least, Ryan would finally stop obsessing over her.She shook her head and pushed open the door to the dorm.Jessie was sitting cross-legged on her bed, scrolling through her phone, but she looked up the moment Lana walked in. Her face lit up as she saw her “Hey, Lan
Chapter 45 It was quite late into the night, almost past 11, when Olivia finally returned from her date. She quietly pushed open the door to their dorm, careful not to wake Mia, who was already fast asleep. The lights in the room were turned off save for the bedside lamp, which was left on by Sophia, who was still up, scrolling through her phone.Sophia looked up as Olivia tiptoed in, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "Well, well, look who finally decided to show up," she teased, sitting up and patting the bed beside her. "So, are you going to spill, or am I going to have to drag it out of you?"Olivia grinned as she kicked off her heels, stretching her tired feet. "Oh my God, Sophia, it was amazing!" she whispered excitedly, settling onto the bed. "I don’t even know where to start.""How about from the beginning?" Sophia said, raising an eyebrow. "Glad it was that nice. Like, what even took you so long? I was beginning to think Jake kidnapped you or something."Olivia laughed
Chapter 44The walk to Jessie’s dorm was quiet, aside from Ryan mumbling to himself as he rehearsed his apology."Hey, Jessie, I was a jerk yesterday… no, that sounds too formal… Jessie, I messed up, but I really like you… ugh, too desperate."Lana shook her head, she was scrolling through her phone watching him stress over every word. "Dude, relax. Just be yourself.""Yeah, easy for you to say. You're not the one about to put your heart on the line."She smirked. "Nope and I don't think I ever will be , which is why I am here getting hurt over all this , she said to herself But I am the one who told you this was a bad idea."They reached the dorm building, and Ryan took a deep breath. "Okay. Let’s do this."Lana stood back, arms crossed. "Good luck, lover boy."Ryan shot her a glare before heading inside. As he walked down the hall, Ryan could feel his heart pounding in his chest. This was it. He’d knock, she’d answer, he’d give her the chocolates and note, they’d talk, and maybe—ju
Chapter 43Ryan figured he needed to speak to Jessie. He hadn't seen or spoken to her all day—actually, not since last night’s incident. He felt like he owed her an apology, at least for how things had transpired. Leaving her mid-conversation to answer his mom’s call had been careless. He could have handled it better. Now, as he sat at the café with Lana, he found himself distracted, tapping his fingers against the table while Lana was completely busy with taking pictures of their food. He sighed. Somehow, she had convinced him to buy lunch for both of them, and now she was treating their meal like a personal photoshoot. "Are you planning to eat that or frame it?" Ryan asked, raising an eyebrow as she adjusted the angle of her phone. Lana smirked but didn’t look up. "Food this pretty deserves appreciation." She snapped another picture. "Besides, you paid, so I get to enjoy it however I want."thanks for buying by the way , you owed me after all Ryan rolled his eyes, but his mind
Chapter 42Olivia and Mia soon arrived at the dorm room, as they burst through the door. Without a word, they both rushed to Sophia and wrapped her in a tight hug.“Whoa! What’s this for?” Sophia laughed, caught off guard but secretly enjoying the warmth of their embrace.“Can’t we just hug you?” Mia teased, pulling back slightly.“Yeah, maybe we missed you,” Olivia added with a wink.Sophia narrowed her eyes playfully. “you girls can't be serious. I saw you guys this morning.” And how come you guys always seem to come in together? “Still,” Mia said, flopping onto Sophia’s bed dramatically. “A lot can happen in a few hours, plus you got the job .” and blame Olivia for that ,she is always looking for how to follow meSophia shook her head, grinning. “You two are so weird.”“We know,” Olivia said proudly. “Now, about my date—”“Ah, yes! What time does it start?” Sophia asked, straightening up. “Let’s get you all dressed up.”Olivia glanced at her phone. “In about two hours, but I ne
Chapter 41Ryan let out a dry chuckle. Yeah, well, welcome to my life. And you've always been there Lana smiled a little at that truth There was a moment’s silence before Lana spoke again. ’Okay, but about the whole professors reporting to her thing—what are you going to do about that? You can’t let this keep happening. ’Ryan sighed. 'I don't know. I was thinking about talking to my professors and asking them not to give her updates, but let's be real—if my mom wants information, she'll find a way to get it. 'Lana nodded. 'Of course, she probably has half the faculty in her pocket. 'there is a walsh auditorium for a reasonRyan rubbed his temples. Ugh, don’t even get me started on that. At this point I’d have to assume she paid someone to keep track of my attendance.Lana smiled. 'Anytime you feel the urge to disappear, just give me a call. I'll help you stage a dramatic getaway. 'you know I have your back Ryan chuckled despite himself. "Oh yeah? What’s the plan?"Lana rubbed
Chapter 40Sophia couldn’t wait to share the news with her roommates. Her heart was still racing a little from the excitement of the interview, and the thought of actually getting the job gave her a sense of accomplishment. She quickly pulled out her phone, unlocked it, and opened their group chat."Hey guys, I might be resuming work here anytime soon," she typed, her fingers moving over the keys for a moment before hitting send. The little dot indicating that the message had been delivered made her stomach have a sensation Mia was the first to reply, sending a string of celebratory emojis. "Congratulations, girl! It was never in doubt," she wrote, and Sophia couldn’t help but grin at the message. Mia always knew how to make her feel good about herself. Sophia stared at her phone, waiting for Olivia’s response, but there was no reply yet. It seemed Olivia wasn’t online at the moment. She let out a sigh of relief, feeling like she had something to talk about when Olivia did finally
Chapter 39Sophia exhaled sharply, massaging her wrist as she stepped back. A part of her felt triumphant—seeing Katrina riled up was satisfying. But she didn’t have time for all this She needed to get to Pappies on time, and dealing with Katrina wasn’t on her to-do list. Pulling out her phone, she checked the time. She hadn’t made an official appointment, which she now wondered if she should have, but there was no going back. She had to at least show up and try. As she made her way toward Pappies, the cool afternoon breeze brushed against her skin. It was a short walk from her lecture hall, but it felt unfamiliar. This was the first time she had come to this side of the school, and she took in her surroundings as she walked. The atmosphere was quieter here, with fewer students loitering around. Most of them seemed busy, either in hushed conversations or heading toward different buildings. Sophia adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and quickened her pace. She didn’t wa
Chapter 38As the lecturer stepped into the classroom, Sophia immediately noticed that he was different from the one they had the day before. This man looked to be in his early 40s—perhaps even younger. He carried himself with an air of confidence, his neatly pressed suit giving him a polished yet approachable appearance. Sophia was a little taken aback. She had expected someone much older in this field, considering the depth of knowledge required for public health. But then again, times were changing, and younger professionals were making their mark in academia. The lecturer walked to the center of the class, set down his materials, and offered a friendly smile. “Good morning, everyone,” he greeted. “Good morning, sir,” the class responded in unison. “My name is Dr. Reynolds, and I’ll be taking you through Public Health this semester. I expect all of you to be engaged because this course isn’t just about theories—it’s about real-world applications. Public health affects eve
