Chapter 18
"You know what? I think you are rude as hell, and I'm sorry I interrupted you in the first place."
Lana totally ignored her and faced the window.
"What is your name, by the way?" The girl continued talking and still got no response from Lana.
"Okay, listen, there are four of us in this room. If this is going to work out, we are going to need to communicate. But I'm not one to force anything. Well, in case you are listening, my name is Jessie, and there are two other girls in here. Both went for the induction and will be back soon.
And I don't think they will like all this hostility. We haven't done anything wrong to you, have we? Be for real."
Lana realized the girl was right. They'd done nothing to her. Maybe she should finally give it an opportunity.
She decided to speak.
"My name is Lana, and I'm sorry I sounded rude earlier. I was just pissed because of someone I ran into on the way here. She kind of ruined my phone and my mood by extension. Plus, the service here is terrible. I guess I was transferring aggression."
Jessie nodded. "I totally get it. I also should have minded my business. You're free to use curse words however you like, and I'm sorry about your phone incident."
Lana laughed a bit. Maybe being free outside her comfort zone wasn't bad after all.
"And as for your phone reception, I think there's a general hostel Wi-Fi we use here, covered by the tuition f*e. The password should be in the email."
Lana checked it and saw that the Jessie girl wasn't bad after all.
"Did you get a good look at the person who did that to your phone?" Jessie asked.
"No, not really, but I am sure I will recognize her if we cross paths. Why did you ask? Is there anything you can do?" Lana asked.
"Surely you're not planning on letting this go, are you? She has to pay for the damages done to it. Don't tell me you're going to let it go?"
Lana seemed to like Jessie already. She was as mean as her.
"Yeah, I'm sure I'd recognize her if we run into each other."
"That's good then. Not to worry, I'd have your back if she tries to play smart."
Lana smiled once again, genuinely.
"Once again, I'm sorry we got off on the wrong foot."
Jessie nodded. "It's okay. I'm glad we got it out of the way."

Sophia returned to her dorm room. It was already nightfall.
"Hey, look who's back!" Mia said to her as she walked in. "I wonder why you even bothered to go in the first place."
"It was nice to, you know, just connect with people in my department," Sophia responded.
"School resumes properly tomorrow. I am sure you will have plenty of time to connect this semester, my dear," Mia said, and Sophia giggled.
"Alright then, let's go eat at the cafeteria," Olivia finally spoke. She seemed to be engrossed in the book she was reading.
"Umm, I think we can wait a little till eight. Not really the type to eat early," Mia said to her.
"I'll come with you, Olivia. Let me just make a quick call home," Sophia said.
"Are you missing home already? We've been here for less than a day," Olivia teased.
Sophia smiled and excused herself, brought out her phone, and dialed Justine. She would be happy to hear from her.
She held the phone to her ear as it rang, waiting for the receiver, but none came. She dialed the number again, but still no response. She concluded that maybe Justine must be busy with something. She would just call her later.
She walked back to her roommates and spoke to Olivia.
"Can we go now?" she asked her.
"Sure thing." Olivia slid on her head warmer. "Let's go then."
"Wait up! I'm coming with you guys," Mia finally spoke up.
"You? I thought you said you're not planning on eating now?" Olivia asked.
"So you both are really planning on leaving me here alone? Come on, girls, we are roomies!"
They all left the room and headed to the cafeteria.
Once they got there, it was quite more crowded than expected.
"Wow, what is going on here? This looks particularly crowded," Olivia commented.
"More reason why I asked to come by eight. Look at how long the line is," Mia said with a smile, feeling she had been proven right.
"Let's go. I am sure we will be able to get something. I am going to hit the vending machines and get chocolates for us," Sophia said to them.
---
They nodded and walked forward in line.
The vending machine was just across from where they previously stood. Sophia slid the money into it and waited for the cookies to drop after punching the value into the machine.
She bent down to pick them up, then saw two girls pass by her. She felt a wave of mean air.
She turned and immediately recognized one of them—it was the girl she had bumped into the other time, though the girl hadn't seen her.
Sophia picked up the cookies and walked back to her roommates, handing them over. They were already closer to the counter at this point.
"I wonder what is being served. They better have all the balanced diet in the right proportions, else I'm suing. My parents are not paying a fortune for me to be served food like a prisoner," Mia remarked.
"They dare not," Olivia added. "I looked through the menu and online reviews from students. They claim it's actually quite good. I mean, this is what we are going to be eating as we chase a degree, so it has to be good."
Sophia gave it a thought, realizing that she was actually one of the few people here on scholarship. Even the professor the other day had explained to her that there were limited slots. She was indeed lucky and wondered how the others would feel if they found out.
It got to their turn, and they were all served, depending on what they planned on eating. At least they could make out something from the menu.
Sophia had bacon, yam, with a little egg on the side. Olivia decided to go for pastries and coffee, while Mia had some food in a large portion that Sophia couldn't quite identify.
The three ladies took their trays, scanned around for where to sit, and finally settled at one table in the corner.
A few minutes later, they were into their meals and having a discussion.
"To be honest, this tastes really good. I'm quite impressed with the cooking here," Olivia was the first to comment.
"I mean..." Mia added. "It's nothing like home, but I can work with it." She picked up her milk and gulped it down.
Sophia sat there in silence, doing nothing but nodding her head in agreement as they spoke. She wasn't used to such meals, and this was better than anything she had in a long time. This wasn't the kind of food she and Justine ate on a regular basis. It was only occasionally, when they both managed to do some extra work, that they could afford food like this.
"Easy there on the bites," Mia said to Olivia, who was furiously taking down her food. "You don't want to get yourself choked," Mia cautioned.
"You can't blame me. I told the both of you I was starving before we got here, didn't I? Also, I think I might have a portion of your food," Olivia responded, pointing to both of them.
"Does reading books take up all your energy and leave your stomach empty?" Mia joked.
"Well, you can say that again. This is exactly what's happening today."
The ladies continued laughing as they went down on their meal.
Ryan saw Lana at the cafeteria with another girl he found attractive. He walked over to them both with his tray in hand.
"Hey, ladies," he said in his most confident and cool tone.
"Sorry, but this table is occupied. Find somewhere else to sit," Jessie snapped at him.
"Hmm, she's the feisty kind," Ryan remarked.
"And you're the mannerless kind," Jessie replied.
"Hey, easy, the both of you," Lana said as things seemed to be going south.
"Ryan, this is my roommate Jessie—well, one of my roommates, actually."
Then Lana turned to Jessie. "And this is my longtime friend, Ryan."
"Wait, you know this guy?" Jessie asked.
"Yeah, we've known each other since we were kids," Ryan chipped in. "So I don't know why you think you had to give me an attitude."
Well, that explains it.
"Oh, then I'm sorry. I thought you were just a random guy that likes to taunt girls," Jessie apologized and stretched out her hand, offering a handshake of peace.
Ryan smiled, nodded, and accepted the offer. "How abo
ut we redo the introduction?" he said with a smirk.
"I am Ryan Walsh."
At that moment, Lana knew something was up with him.
Chapter 19And he definitely seemed to have an interest in Jessie. "I think that is enough introductions," Lana said as she cut off their conversation. Ryan frowned at this a little but couldn't say anything as Lana started with the questions. "So, how do you like your room, Ryan? And your roommates?" "Argh," Ryan exclaimed. "I don't want to talk about it. It's terrible." "The bed is way smaller than what I have at home. I'm used to sleeping in a king-sized bed…" Lana rolled her eyes at this. "There's no jacuzzi. How am I meant to relax?" "Let it go, man. This is a university, not a relaxation resort," Lana blurted out. She couldn't help but feel Ryan was kind of bragging to look good in front of Jessie. She had seen it play out a couple of times, so she could spot when Ryan was doing it from a mile away. "And then my roommates—they all seem to know each other, like they were passing some kind of smoke around, it seems," Ryan said as he took a slice out of his bacon.
Chapter 20She was jolted from her thoughts by the sound of her phone ringing."Who could it be?" she said to herself as the caller ID displayed on the screen. It was Justine. She immediately sat up."Hey, cousin!!" Justine's familiar voice called over from the other end. "How was the first day at school? Sorry I missed your call, was busy helping Grandma take a bath. Not to sound lazy, but I miss having you around already."Sophia laughed out as she heard this—one of the few times she had smiled genuinely in this shitty day."Well, school is fine, and about Grandma, don't worry, you will get used to it with time," Sophia replied."Why do you sound like that?" her cousin asked. "Sophie?? What happened at school today?"Justine was the type that was very observant with everything. She could tell when something was wrong—any slight change in Sophia's voice or attitude, and Justine would pick it up and question her. At this point, it was clearly looking like something was off."Nothing i
Chapter 21Eleanor Walsh was an industrious and ambitious woman with a competitive spirit. It was one of the reasons she was well respected among her peers. She had a relentless drive, always aiming to outdo herself and those around her. Settling for mediocrity was never an option. While others dreamed in silence, she turned her aspirations into action, making bold moves even in the face of uncertainty. At an early age, Eleanor was already pitching business ideas to huge firms and companies, waiting for a positive response. Some would listen, entertained by her confidence, while others dismissed her outright, finding her too young, too eager. But rejection never deterred her. She had a sharp mind and an even sharper will. If one door closed, she would knock on another—until she found the one that opened. She wasn't the type to be played with. Born into a fairly wealthy family, Eleanor had always been provided for, but comfort never softened her ambition. Her parents, especially he
Chapter 22Lana was patiently waiting downstairs for Ryan to come out. Surely, he couldn't still be asleep at such a time. She had called him, but it had not gone through—her best guess was the poor reception messing with the cell service. She decided to go up to his dorm. She had his room number, and so did he. The door was open when she got there, and just like she had guessed, he was still asleep. The other roommates were lodged in a corner of the room, some girls laying bare on their bodies. Blunt heads of cigarettes and marijuana filled the floor. What a terrible state the room was in! She just hoped Ryan hadn't joined them in the act."Wake up, Ryan. Wake up!" Lana was shaking him violently until his eyes managed to open."Hey, Lana. What are you doing here?" His eyes were heavy from sleep, a sight Lana was already getting used to."I shouldn't be here, but a certain someone can't set an alarm or grow up to know that life is getting serious!""Hey, who's this? Is she your mother
Chapter 23Sohpia took a deep breath and sat down , it had gone better than she anticipated Wow I am so sorry about your grandmother Mrs Jameson called ,but wait did you say your name was Sophia? The professor asked again ..the same one who's results was off the charts and we had to offer her a scholarship here Yes that is me professor Sophia responded to her feeling confident all of a sudden"Well, it’s great to have you here. When I heard you would be joining this school, I didn’t know it would be our faculty. We’re lucky to have your brain in our presence," Mrs. Jameson teased with a warm smile, her eyes all over Sophia with admiration."Thank you, ma," Sophia responded with a bright, polite smile, though inside, her nerves still fluttered. She had worked tirelessly to be here, and hearing praise from a professor on her first day felt like validation."So she’s a charity case," a voice scoffed from the front "No wonder she looks so out of place."it all makes sense to me n
Chapter 24A soft, almost melodic voice. Ryan turned around, his frustration still lingering—until he saw her. Jessie. Lana’s roommate from yesterday. Just like that, his anger evaporated. His frown was replaced with something softer, something closer to amusement. He couldn't believe his luck ,just when he had been troubling Lana to help him out with her. He hadn’t expected to see her again so soon, and definitely not like this. She stood a few feet away, arms crossed, looking at him with mild curiosity. She had that same confident but effortless air about her, like she wasn’t trying too hard to be noticed—yet somehow, he couldn’t look away. His luck today might not have been all bad after all. "Jessie," he said, trying (and failing) to hide his excitement. "Didn’t think I’d run into you again so soon." I literally asked after you from lanaJessie raised an eyebrow. "I figured as much. You did seem too interested in talking last night." Ryan chuckled, scratching the
Chapter 25 Her own childhood had been… different. Birthdays were kind of alien to her—sometimes just her, her grandmother, and Justine sitting at the tiny dining table with a single cupcake between them. No extravagant cakes, no mountain of presents. Just the three of them and the quiet understanding that love didn’t need to be expensive. She pulled her gaze away from the screen and stared at the ceiling. It wasn’t fair. But then again, life had never really been fair. She exhaled and reached for another chip, chewing slowly as she stared at the dim glow of her phone screen. Maybe it was pointless to dwell on things like this. From a comment on the page, she stumbled upon a picture that looked familiar. She clicked on it and knew she was right in an instant—it was the mean girl she had to give all her savings to. Lana. She, too, seemed the wealthy type, but nothing close to Katrina, as her page was filled with pictures of her at all sorts of parties, drinks in hand. On
Chapter 26Justine got dressed in a bodycon dress. She had to look corporate for the firm, with the intention of resuming work today. The boss—the one who had shown interest in her—had called yesterday. She did the needful at home before leaving for work. It was going to be the easiest job yet; all it entailed was being a personal assistant. She got to the firm quite late and met the receptionist—the same one who had been mean to her when she applied. She was going to enjoy this, working with the person who hadn’t seen her as worthy."Good morning," Justine said as loudly as she could when she walked in. "May I have the keys to the manager's office?""I'm sorry, are you the new PA?" the receptionist asked.Justine ignored the question, just as the receptionist had ignored her back then. The receptionist quickly looked up the staff list and saw that Justine had indeed been employed."I apologize, ma'am. Here is the key. You are welcome to our establishment; it's a pleasure looking forw
Chapter 46Lana had just turned the corner when she saw a stranger leave her dorm room. A guy she had never seen before. Tall, dark hair, a confident stride—definitely not someone from their usual circle. She watched as he casually walked down the hall, disappearing around the corner. Her lips curled slightly, both in amusement and irritation. So this was the guy Ryan saw Jessie with. The reason Ryan had spent half the night crashing out Lana wanted to say something to Jessie about it, but then again, what was the point? She wasn’t going to stir up unnecessary drama. If Jessie wanted to sneak around with someone else while Ryan was busy convincing himself she was the love of his life, that was her business. Maybe now, at least, Ryan would finally stop obsessing over her.She shook her head and pushed open the door to the dorm.Jessie was sitting cross-legged on her bed, scrolling through her phone, but she looked up the moment Lana walked in. Her face lit up as she saw her “Hey, Lan
Chapter 45 It was quite late into the night, almost past 11, when Olivia finally returned from her date. She quietly pushed open the door to their dorm, careful not to wake Mia, who was already fast asleep. The lights in the room were turned off save for the bedside lamp, which was left on by Sophia, who was still up, scrolling through her phone.Sophia looked up as Olivia tiptoed in, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "Well, well, look who finally decided to show up," she teased, sitting up and patting the bed beside her. "So, are you going to spill, or am I going to have to drag it out of you?"Olivia grinned as she kicked off her heels, stretching her tired feet. "Oh my God, Sophia, it was amazing!" she whispered excitedly, settling onto the bed. "I don’t even know where to start.""How about from the beginning?" Sophia said, raising an eyebrow. "Glad it was that nice. Like, what even took you so long? I was beginning to think Jake kidnapped you or something."Olivia laughed
Chapter 44The walk to Jessie’s dorm was quiet, aside from Ryan mumbling to himself as he rehearsed his apology."Hey, Jessie, I was a jerk yesterday… no, that sounds too formal… Jessie, I messed up, but I really like you… ugh, too desperate."Lana shook her head, she was scrolling through her phone watching him stress over every word. "Dude, relax. Just be yourself.""Yeah, easy for you to say. You're not the one about to put your heart on the line."She smirked. "Nope and I don't think I ever will be , which is why I am here getting hurt over all this , she said to herself But I am the one who told you this was a bad idea."They reached the dorm building, and Ryan took a deep breath. "Okay. Let’s do this."Lana stood back, arms crossed. "Good luck, lover boy."Ryan shot her a glare before heading inside. As he walked down the hall, Ryan could feel his heart pounding in his chest. This was it. He’d knock, she’d answer, he’d give her the chocolates and note, they’d talk, and maybe—ju
Chapter 43Ryan figured he needed to speak to Jessie. He hadn't seen or spoken to her all day—actually, not since last night’s incident. He felt like he owed her an apology, at least for how things had transpired. Leaving her mid-conversation to answer his mom’s call had been careless. He could have handled it better. Now, as he sat at the café with Lana, he found himself distracted, tapping his fingers against the table while Lana was completely busy with taking pictures of their food. He sighed. Somehow, she had convinced him to buy lunch for both of them, and now she was treating their meal like a personal photoshoot. "Are you planning to eat that or frame it?" Ryan asked, raising an eyebrow as she adjusted the angle of her phone. Lana smirked but didn’t look up. "Food this pretty deserves appreciation." She snapped another picture. "Besides, you paid, so I get to enjoy it however I want."thanks for buying by the way , you owed me after all Ryan rolled his eyes, but his mind
Chapter 42Olivia and Mia soon arrived at the dorm room, as they burst through the door. Without a word, they both rushed to Sophia and wrapped her in a tight hug.“Whoa! What’s this for?” Sophia laughed, caught off guard but secretly enjoying the warmth of their embrace.“Can’t we just hug you?” Mia teased, pulling back slightly.“Yeah, maybe we missed you,” Olivia added with a wink.Sophia narrowed her eyes playfully. “you girls can't be serious. I saw you guys this morning.” And how come you guys always seem to come in together? “Still,” Mia said, flopping onto Sophia’s bed dramatically. “A lot can happen in a few hours, plus you got the job .” and blame Olivia for that ,she is always looking for how to follow meSophia shook her head, grinning. “You two are so weird.”“We know,” Olivia said proudly. “Now, about my date—”“Ah, yes! What time does it start?” Sophia asked, straightening up. “Let’s get you all dressed up.”Olivia glanced at her phone. “In about two hours, but I ne
Chapter 41Ryan let out a dry chuckle. Yeah, well, welcome to my life. And you've always been there Lana smiled a little at that truth There was a moment’s silence before Lana spoke again. ’Okay, but about the whole professors reporting to her thing—what are you going to do about that? You can’t let this keep happening. ’Ryan sighed. 'I don't know. I was thinking about talking to my professors and asking them not to give her updates, but let's be real—if my mom wants information, she'll find a way to get it. 'Lana nodded. 'Of course, she probably has half the faculty in her pocket. 'there is a walsh auditorium for a reasonRyan rubbed his temples. Ugh, don’t even get me started on that. At this point I’d have to assume she paid someone to keep track of my attendance.Lana smiled. 'Anytime you feel the urge to disappear, just give me a call. I'll help you stage a dramatic getaway. 'you know I have your back Ryan chuckled despite himself. "Oh yeah? What’s the plan?"Lana rubbed
Chapter 40Sophia couldn’t wait to share the news with her roommates. Her heart was still racing a little from the excitement of the interview, and the thought of actually getting the job gave her a sense of accomplishment. She quickly pulled out her phone, unlocked it, and opened their group chat."Hey guys, I might be resuming work here anytime soon," she typed, her fingers moving over the keys for a moment before hitting send. The little dot indicating that the message had been delivered made her stomach have a sensation Mia was the first to reply, sending a string of celebratory emojis. "Congratulations, girl! It was never in doubt," she wrote, and Sophia couldn’t help but grin at the message. Mia always knew how to make her feel good about herself. Sophia stared at her phone, waiting for Olivia’s response, but there was no reply yet. It seemed Olivia wasn’t online at the moment. She let out a sigh of relief, feeling like she had something to talk about when Olivia did finally
Chapter 39Sophia exhaled sharply, massaging her wrist as she stepped back. A part of her felt triumphant—seeing Katrina riled up was satisfying. But she didn’t have time for all this She needed to get to Pappies on time, and dealing with Katrina wasn’t on her to-do list. Pulling out her phone, she checked the time. She hadn’t made an official appointment, which she now wondered if she should have, but there was no going back. She had to at least show up and try. As she made her way toward Pappies, the cool afternoon breeze brushed against her skin. It was a short walk from her lecture hall, but it felt unfamiliar. This was the first time she had come to this side of the school, and she took in her surroundings as she walked. The atmosphere was quieter here, with fewer students loitering around. Most of them seemed busy, either in hushed conversations or heading toward different buildings. Sophia adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and quickened her pace. She didn’t wa
Chapter 38As the lecturer stepped into the classroom, Sophia immediately noticed that he was different from the one they had the day before. This man looked to be in his early 40s—perhaps even younger. He carried himself with an air of confidence, his neatly pressed suit giving him a polished yet approachable appearance. Sophia was a little taken aback. She had expected someone much older in this field, considering the depth of knowledge required for public health. But then again, times were changing, and younger professionals were making their mark in academia. The lecturer walked to the center of the class, set down his materials, and offered a friendly smile. “Good morning, everyone,” he greeted. “Good morning, sir,” the class responded in unison. “My name is Dr. Reynolds, and I’ll be taking you through Public Health this semester. I expect all of you to be engaged because this course isn’t just about theories—it’s about real-world applications. Public health affects eve
