Chapter 22
Lana was patiently waiting downstairs for Ryan to come out. Surely, he couldn't still be asleep at such a time. She had called him, but it had not gone through—her best guess was the poor reception messing with the cell service.
She decided to go up to his dorm. She had his room number, and so did he. The door was open when she got there, and just like she had guessed, he was still asleep.
The other roommates were lodged in a corner of the room, some girls laying bare on their bodies. Blunt heads of cigarettes and marijuana filled the floor. What a terrible state the room was in! She just hoped Ryan hadn't joined them in the act.
"Wake up, Ryan. Wake up!" Lana was shaking him violently until his eyes managed to open.
"Hey, Lana. What are you doing here?" His eyes were heavy from sleep, a sight Lana was already getting used to.
"I shouldn't be here, but a certain someone can't set an alarm or grow up to know that life is getting serious!"
"Hey, who's this? Is she your mother?" One of Ryan's roommates said as he walked out of the bathroom, a cigarette in his hand.
"Just ignore him." Ryan stood up, rinsed his face, and put on his clothes. "Come on then, let's go," he turned to her as he picked up his bag.
"That is it? You are not going to take your bath or something?" Lana seemed shocked.
"We are running late already. I can just bathe when I get back. Plus, my cologne has a really strong smell, lol, and it's nice."
"I really can't with you. It's too early. Let's just go."
"Your roommates are really nice to live with," Lana said sarcastically as soon as they were on the campus road.
"Oh please, they are the complete opposite. I don't think I can take this for long. Last night was an example of wild. I don't know how I'm going to cope with those guys."
Lana perceived an odd smell as Ryan spoke.
"Please don't try talking to people today. Your breath stinks. And I am sure you'll get used to your roommates. You guys are not so different from each other."
"Ouch!" Ryan exclaimed. "You literally roasted me and hurt my feelings in more than one way. Also, I plan on getting a bubble gum before getting to class."
"So how is your roommate? The beautiful girl from yesterday? Speak to her on my behalf yet?"
Lana got angry each time Ryan talked about another girl or planned on dating.
As a matter of fact, she had hated his ex-girlfriend, Taylor, and had wanted them to be separated so badly. She may have indirectly had a hand in their breakup.
One certain day when Ryan came to her, complaining about not liking the way he was being treated by Taylor, she sought to put ideas in his head—about how jolly Taylor got around Zach and all—fueling Ryan's anger until he decided it was enough and broke up with her.
---
Lana was the happiest on hearing the news. She did pretend to be sorry on seeing a heartbroken Ryan. This happened months ago, and she thought she was over it. Now, hearing Ryan talk about Jessie filled her with the feeling again.
"Ryan, I am sure she wants nothing to do with you. The both of you won't even look good together."
"You don't know that," Ryan protested. "You know Zach and Taylor are in this school, right? It will feel good to rub it in their faces, and Jessie is a huge upgrade on Taylor—it's very clear to all.
She has these pretty eyes, a lovely body shape, beautiful hair. Come on, Lana, give me a chance!"
Complimenting Jessie only made Lana feel worse.
She totally ignored his plea. "Your class is that way. I guess I will see you later then."
She turned around and headed to her faculty, while Ryan went the other way.
---
Sophia scanned around, looking for the best place to sit in class. It was going to be crowded any time from now, and it was best if she took one at the front where she could hear.
She found a perfect seat—one by the window and two columns away from where the lecturer would stand. It was mostly occupied by some girls, but a seat was vacant except for a bag dropped on it.
Clearly, someone was reserving space for a person.
"Can I sit here?" Sophia asked one of the girls politely.
The girl cast a weird look at her and nodded slowly.
"But why can't I sit here? There's clearly no one here, and that bag belongs to you," Sophia pressed.
"And so what? I like keeping my bag on an extra chair. Please move away, you are blocking the window," the girl finally spoke up.
Sophia didn't push further. It was clear now that she was one of those rich kids, and it was only going to trouble her further.
It was almost time for lectures, and she gently sat at a comfortable row—not what she wanted, but she could work with it.
---
The professor that came in was different from the one she met yesterday. She looked younger, sharper, and was very stunning facially.
The professor introduced herself as Mrs. Jameson, a PhD holder with multiple degrees. A brief introduction was done.
Sophia was impressed by all the accolades this woman possessed.
When the professor was done, she asked each of them to stand up and introduce themselves to the class.
"Now, I know you all are expecting me to begin lectures right away," Mrs. Jameson said to them.
"And I definitely will. But how I work and how I take my classes is a bit unconventional. I like my class to be interactive," the woman continued.
"I don't know if you get what I mean, but I lecture better when I know my students."
---
"So, I would like each of you to stand up and take turns introducing yourself to me. Just state your name and why you chose this course—brief and precise," Mrs. Jameson said as she pointed to the first chair in the front row. "You start."
A girl stood up and introduced herself.
Sophia, who sat three rows away, began to panic slightly. She would have to stand up, and all eyes would be on her.
The social anxiety began to kick in and grew more as each person stood up to introduce themselves. The more people that did, the closer it got to being her turn.
It was only a few people before her now.
*Breathe,* she said to herself. *It's nothing hard. Just get up, mention your name, and say how you love helping people. What could be hard in doing all that?*
She raised her head to notice the pattern in which everyone did theirs.
The girl who had refused to give her a seat stood up.
"Hey, everyone, my name is Katrina Beige. I am happy to be a student of this great institution. Why I chose this course is because I have always had a passion for being in the medical field. Being able to treat people and save lives is one thing I hope to do in the future. Thank you."
She sat down, and Mrs. Jameson applauded her a little.
*Oh my gosh, she speaks with so much confidence,* Sophia said to herself and again felt that pressure getting to her.
She closed her eyes. *Just breathe. You can do this.*
"Next person, please," Mrs. Jameson called out.
Sophia opened her eyes to find out it was her the professor was pointing at.
"Oh, okay," she said as she stood up and felt like the eyes of the people staring at her were like needles from all angles.
"Go on then, Miss. The floor is yours."
"My name is, uhj... I am..." Sophia was stuttering to speak.
"How did someone who can't construct sentences even make it into this school?" Sophia heard Katrina make a side comment under her breath.
She took a deep breath and began again, this time building confidence.
"...My name is Sophia. I chose public health not only because of the benefits of being able to save lives but also because I want to help people in need. I had to witness my grandmother go from being healthy and walking around to being in a wheelchair. That was one of the things, among plenty, that made me choose this course. Thank you."
---
Chapter 23Sohpia took a deep breath and sat down , it had gone better than she anticipated Wow I am so sorry about your grandmother Mrs Jameson called ,but wait did you say your name was Sophia? The professor asked again ..the same one who's results was off the charts and we had to offer her a scholarship here Yes that is me professor Sophia responded to her feeling confident all of a sudden"Well, it’s great to have you here. When I heard you would be joining this school, I didn’t know it would be our faculty. We’re lucky to have your brain in our presence," Mrs. Jameson teased with a warm smile, her eyes all over Sophia with admiration."Thank you, ma," Sophia responded with a bright, polite smile, though inside, her nerves still fluttered. She had worked tirelessly to be here, and hearing praise from a professor on her first day felt like validation."So she’s a charity case," a voice scoffed from the front "No wonder she looks so out of place."it all makes sense to me n
Chapter 24A soft, almost melodic voice. Ryan turned around, his frustration still lingering—until he saw her. Jessie. Lana’s roommate from yesterday. Just like that, his anger evaporated. His frown was replaced with something softer, something closer to amusement. He couldn't believe his luck ,just when he had been troubling Lana to help him out with her. He hadn’t expected to see her again so soon, and definitely not like this. She stood a few feet away, arms crossed, looking at him with mild curiosity. She had that same confident but effortless air about her, like she wasn’t trying too hard to be noticed—yet somehow, he couldn’t look away. His luck today might not have been all bad after all. "Jessie," he said, trying (and failing) to hide his excitement. "Didn’t think I’d run into you again so soon." I literally asked after you from lanaJessie raised an eyebrow. "I figured as much. You did seem too interested in talking last night." Ryan chuckled, scratching the
Chapter 25 Her own childhood had been… different. Birthdays were kind of alien to her—sometimes just her, her grandmother, and Justine sitting at the tiny dining table with a single cupcake between them. No extravagant cakes, no mountain of presents. Just the three of them and the quiet understanding that love didn’t need to be expensive. She pulled her gaze away from the screen and stared at the ceiling. It wasn’t fair. But then again, life had never really been fair. She exhaled and reached for another chip, chewing slowly as she stared at the dim glow of her phone screen. Maybe it was pointless to dwell on things like this. From a comment on the page, she stumbled upon a picture that looked familiar. She clicked on it and knew she was right in an instant—it was the mean girl she had to give all her savings to. Lana. She, too, seemed the wealthy type, but nothing close to Katrina, as her page was filled with pictures of her at all sorts of parties, drinks in hand. On
Chapter 26Justine got dressed in a bodycon dress. She had to look corporate for the firm, with the intention of resuming work today. The boss—the one who had shown interest in her—had called yesterday. She did the needful at home before leaving for work. It was going to be the easiest job yet; all it entailed was being a personal assistant. She got to the firm quite late and met the receptionist—the same one who had been mean to her when she applied. She was going to enjoy this, working with the person who hadn’t seen her as worthy."Good morning," Justine said as loudly as she could when she walked in. "May I have the keys to the manager's office?""I'm sorry, are you the new PA?" the receptionist asked.Justine ignored the question, just as the receptionist had ignored her back then. The receptionist quickly looked up the staff list and saw that Justine had indeed been employed."I apologize, ma'am. Here is the key. You are welcome to our establishment; it's a pleasure looking forw
Chapter 27---"Likewise, boss. I am glad to be here." "I can see you have made your touches all around the place," Ward said as he smiled. "Yes, boss. I couldn't stand the look of it. If I'm going to be your PA, some of the duty of cleanup falls on me." "Well then, thank you once again. It will be nice having you about." "Oh, you don't need to mention it, as long as I'm getting paid for this." Ward smiled at her. "It's all about the money with you, isn't it?" "Just trying to keep things professional," Justine said with a smile. *** "Why does everything between us have to be so professional?" he asked, leaning against the edge of her new desk, arms crossed, a smirk playing on his lips. "I mean, we were just on a date the other day. I thought it went well. I felt a connection." His voice was light, teasing, but there was something else beneath it—uncertainty, maybe even disappointment. Justine inhaled sharply, momentarily caught off guard. She had been hoping to eas
Chapter 28“Hey guys, have you seen this?” She lifted the pizza box, showing them the ad. “I think I’m going to apply for this. I need a job on campus.” Olivia leaned forward, dropping the book she was reading as her expression turned serious squinting at the ad. “Pappie’s? Oh, that’s the little place we got you the pizza ,but I don't understand why you need a job. Yeah I am failing to understand too , mia Chimed inLook guys , I am sure you really don't know much about me , but I am different from you girls , the thing is I don't have anyone to support me here Sophia said Her roommates realized this was a sensitive issue and she needed their support on it , which is why she told them I feel like this is going to help out here, at least the little bills Mia nodded. “Yeah, I think I understand you, we were there today . And the staff seemed to be mostly students.” Sophia’s heart lifted slightly. That sounded promising. “Really? So, you think I’d have a shot?” “Of
Chapter 29Lana who had stood up for more drinks returned from the kitchen with a drink in hand, sat back onto the couch. "So, what’s the plan for the day, ? It's a really nice place your parents got here for you Zach , Are we actually doing something, or are we just sitting around making fun of Ryan?"Zach rubbed his Thanks but "I mean, making fun of Ryan is a solid plan, but we could also watch a movie, play some games, or—""Movie," Lana interrupted. "Something dumb and entertaining."at least before we get back to school Zach gestured toward the TV. "Alright, let’s see what we’ve got."As they started flipping through options, Jessie leaned over to Ryan. "This is fun. I can see why you hang out with them."Ryan shrugged, but there was a hint of fondness in his voice. "Yeah… they’re alright.we have our fights all the time but we tight Zach turned back to them with a mischievous grin. "Oh, by the way, Jessie, do you know about Ryan’s horrible taste in movies?"Jessie’s eyes lit up.
Chapter 30**"Well, it better be,"** Justine said, her voice light but teasing. "What are you doing?" She paused for a moment, then sighed. "How inconsiderate of me not to ask about any school stuff. How’s everything going?" Sophia shifted on her bed, staring up at the ceiling as she held the phone to her ear. "It’s okay, cousin. There’s really not much going on here." She hesitated for a split second before blurting out, "I’m going to apply for a job tomorrow, though." She immediately regretted it. She hadn’t planned on saying that—not yet, at least. But the words had already escaped, and there was no taking them back. She knew the reaction from Justine would be something of her being mad Justine went silent for a moment. When she finally spoke, her tone had shifted, it was one filled with concern. **"What do you mean by getting a job, Sophia? I don’t understand what you’re saying. Are you not there to study?"** Sophia sighed. She could sense something deeper in her cousin’s v
Chapter 46Lana had just turned the corner when she saw a stranger leave her dorm room. A guy she had never seen before. Tall, dark hair, a confident stride—definitely not someone from their usual circle. She watched as he casually walked down the hall, disappearing around the corner. Her lips curled slightly, both in amusement and irritation. So this was the guy Ryan saw Jessie with. The reason Ryan had spent half the night crashing out Lana wanted to say something to Jessie about it, but then again, what was the point? She wasn’t going to stir up unnecessary drama. If Jessie wanted to sneak around with someone else while Ryan was busy convincing himself she was the love of his life, that was her business. Maybe now, at least, Ryan would finally stop obsessing over her.She shook her head and pushed open the door to the dorm.Jessie was sitting cross-legged on her bed, scrolling through her phone, but she looked up the moment Lana walked in. Her face lit up as she saw her “Hey, Lan
Chapter 45 It was quite late into the night, almost past 11, when Olivia finally returned from her date. She quietly pushed open the door to their dorm, careful not to wake Mia, who was already fast asleep. The lights in the room were turned off save for the bedside lamp, which was left on by Sophia, who was still up, scrolling through her phone.Sophia looked up as Olivia tiptoed in, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "Well, well, look who finally decided to show up," she teased, sitting up and patting the bed beside her. "So, are you going to spill, or am I going to have to drag it out of you?"Olivia grinned as she kicked off her heels, stretching her tired feet. "Oh my God, Sophia, it was amazing!" she whispered excitedly, settling onto the bed. "I don’t even know where to start.""How about from the beginning?" Sophia said, raising an eyebrow. "Glad it was that nice. Like, what even took you so long? I was beginning to think Jake kidnapped you or something."Olivia laughed
Chapter 44The walk to Jessie’s dorm was quiet, aside from Ryan mumbling to himself as he rehearsed his apology."Hey, Jessie, I was a jerk yesterday… no, that sounds too formal… Jessie, I messed up, but I really like you… ugh, too desperate."Lana shook her head, she was scrolling through her phone watching him stress over every word. "Dude, relax. Just be yourself.""Yeah, easy for you to say. You're not the one about to put your heart on the line."She smirked. "Nope and I don't think I ever will be , which is why I am here getting hurt over all this , she said to herself But I am the one who told you this was a bad idea."They reached the dorm building, and Ryan took a deep breath. "Okay. Let’s do this."Lana stood back, arms crossed. "Good luck, lover boy."Ryan shot her a glare before heading inside. As he walked down the hall, Ryan could feel his heart pounding in his chest. This was it. He’d knock, she’d answer, he’d give her the chocolates and note, they’d talk, and maybe—ju
Chapter 43Ryan figured he needed to speak to Jessie. He hadn't seen or spoken to her all day—actually, not since last night’s incident. He felt like he owed her an apology, at least for how things had transpired. Leaving her mid-conversation to answer his mom’s call had been careless. He could have handled it better. Now, as he sat at the café with Lana, he found himself distracted, tapping his fingers against the table while Lana was completely busy with taking pictures of their food. He sighed. Somehow, she had convinced him to buy lunch for both of them, and now she was treating their meal like a personal photoshoot. "Are you planning to eat that or frame it?" Ryan asked, raising an eyebrow as she adjusted the angle of her phone. Lana smirked but didn’t look up. "Food this pretty deserves appreciation." She snapped another picture. "Besides, you paid, so I get to enjoy it however I want."thanks for buying by the way , you owed me after all Ryan rolled his eyes, but his mind
Chapter 42Olivia and Mia soon arrived at the dorm room, as they burst through the door. Without a word, they both rushed to Sophia and wrapped her in a tight hug.“Whoa! What’s this for?” Sophia laughed, caught off guard but secretly enjoying the warmth of their embrace.“Can’t we just hug you?” Mia teased, pulling back slightly.“Yeah, maybe we missed you,” Olivia added with a wink.Sophia narrowed her eyes playfully. “you girls can't be serious. I saw you guys this morning.” And how come you guys always seem to come in together? “Still,” Mia said, flopping onto Sophia’s bed dramatically. “A lot can happen in a few hours, plus you got the job .” and blame Olivia for that ,she is always looking for how to follow meSophia shook her head, grinning. “You two are so weird.”“We know,” Olivia said proudly. “Now, about my date—”“Ah, yes! What time does it start?” Sophia asked, straightening up. “Let’s get you all dressed up.”Olivia glanced at her phone. “In about two hours, but I ne
Chapter 41Ryan let out a dry chuckle. Yeah, well, welcome to my life. And you've always been there Lana smiled a little at that truth There was a moment’s silence before Lana spoke again. ’Okay, but about the whole professors reporting to her thing—what are you going to do about that? You can’t let this keep happening. ’Ryan sighed. 'I don't know. I was thinking about talking to my professors and asking them not to give her updates, but let's be real—if my mom wants information, she'll find a way to get it. 'Lana nodded. 'Of course, she probably has half the faculty in her pocket. 'there is a walsh auditorium for a reasonRyan rubbed his temples. Ugh, don’t even get me started on that. At this point I’d have to assume she paid someone to keep track of my attendance.Lana smiled. 'Anytime you feel the urge to disappear, just give me a call. I'll help you stage a dramatic getaway. 'you know I have your back Ryan chuckled despite himself. "Oh yeah? What’s the plan?"Lana rubbed
Chapter 40Sophia couldn’t wait to share the news with her roommates. Her heart was still racing a little from the excitement of the interview, and the thought of actually getting the job gave her a sense of accomplishment. She quickly pulled out her phone, unlocked it, and opened their group chat."Hey guys, I might be resuming work here anytime soon," she typed, her fingers moving over the keys for a moment before hitting send. The little dot indicating that the message had been delivered made her stomach have a sensation Mia was the first to reply, sending a string of celebratory emojis. "Congratulations, girl! It was never in doubt," she wrote, and Sophia couldn’t help but grin at the message. Mia always knew how to make her feel good about herself. Sophia stared at her phone, waiting for Olivia’s response, but there was no reply yet. It seemed Olivia wasn’t online at the moment. She let out a sigh of relief, feeling like she had something to talk about when Olivia did finally
Chapter 39Sophia exhaled sharply, massaging her wrist as she stepped back. A part of her felt triumphant—seeing Katrina riled up was satisfying. But she didn’t have time for all this She needed to get to Pappies on time, and dealing with Katrina wasn’t on her to-do list. Pulling out her phone, she checked the time. She hadn’t made an official appointment, which she now wondered if she should have, but there was no going back. She had to at least show up and try. As she made her way toward Pappies, the cool afternoon breeze brushed against her skin. It was a short walk from her lecture hall, but it felt unfamiliar. This was the first time she had come to this side of the school, and she took in her surroundings as she walked. The atmosphere was quieter here, with fewer students loitering around. Most of them seemed busy, either in hushed conversations or heading toward different buildings. Sophia adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and quickened her pace. She didn’t wa
Chapter 38As the lecturer stepped into the classroom, Sophia immediately noticed that he was different from the one they had the day before. This man looked to be in his early 40s—perhaps even younger. He carried himself with an air of confidence, his neatly pressed suit giving him a polished yet approachable appearance. Sophia was a little taken aback. She had expected someone much older in this field, considering the depth of knowledge required for public health. But then again, times were changing, and younger professionals were making their mark in academia. The lecturer walked to the center of the class, set down his materials, and offered a friendly smile. “Good morning, everyone,” he greeted. “Good morning, sir,” the class responded in unison. “My name is Dr. Reynolds, and I’ll be taking you through Public Health this semester. I expect all of you to be engaged because this course isn’t just about theories—it’s about real-world applications. Public health affects eve
