Chapter 28
“Hey guys, have you seen this?” She lifted the pizza box, showing them the ad. “I think I’m going to apply for this. I need a job on campus.”
Olivia leaned forward, dropping the book she was reading as her expression turned serious squinting at the ad. “Pappie’s? Oh, that’s the little place we got you the pizza ,but I don't understand why you need a job.
Yeah I am failing to understand too , mia Chimed in
Look guys , I am sure you really don't know much about me , but I am different from you girls , the thing is I don't have anyone to support me here Sophia said
Her roommates realized this was a sensitive issue and she needed their support on it , which is why she told them
I feel like this is going to help out here, at least the little bills
Mia nodded. “Yeah, I think I understand you, we were there today . And the staff seemed to be mostly students.”
Sophia’s heart lifted slightly. That sounded promising. “Really? So, you think I’d have a shot?”
“Of course!” Mia said, grinning. “You’re smart, reliable, and let’s be honest, you’re way friendlier than half the people that work there. I don’t see why they wouldn’t hire you.”
Olivia smirked. “Plus, if you get the job, we might get free coffee and pizza . So, I fully support this decision.”
Sophia laughed, shaking her head. “You guys are the worst.”
“But also the best,” Olivia added with a wink. “Seriously though, go for it. The worst they can say is no, right?”
Sophia exhaled, feeling a little lighter. Maybe this wasn’t such a bad idea after all.
“Alright,” she said with newfound determination. “I’ll apply first thing tomorrow.”
And just like that, what started as a box of pizza from her roommates had turned into something much bigger—**a chance for a fresh start

Ryan,Jessie and Lana arrived at Zach's after the long ride, much to the relief of Lana who felt she was going to throw up from all the shenanigans, Ryan and Jessie were putting up
Zach spotted them the moment they stepped out of the car. He leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, a smirk playing on his lips.
"Hey, guys! Glad you’re finally here," he called out as they approached. "And… with a total stranger, I must add."
Ryan rolled his eyes. "Her name is Jessie, and she’s with me, Zach. How about you let us in?"
Zach grinned, stepping forward and extending a hand. "Well then, nice to meet you, Jessie."
Jessie smiled politely, shaking his hand. "Likewise. "
"Oh? Hope Ryan told you about me and Only good things he is my bud from way back, I hope," Zach said
Jessie gave Ryan a sidelong glance, smirking. "I’ll let you wonder about that."
Ryan sighed. "Zach, we just got here, man. Can we skip the banter and go inside?"
"Alright, alright," Zach said, then turned to Ryan, his grin widening. "By the way, I accept your apology for the last time."
Ryan’s expression changed. "Man, to hell with that. I am not apologizing for anything. You had it coming." He shoved his hands in his pockets. "Now, will you let us in or what? I didn’t even want to drive here—Lana was the one who convinced me."
Zach held up his hands in surrender. "Ease up, man, I was just messing with you. Of course, you’re welcome here. Come on in."
Lana, standing to the side with her arms crossed, sighed dramatically. "Finally." She brushed past Zach and disappeared inside, clearly not in the mood for any more back-and-forth.
Jessie raised an eyebrow at Ryan. "Is it always like this with you guys?"
Ryan exhaled through his nose. " Nah not really she's just been moody lately , claiming she's more mature so, yes."
They stepped inside, the warmth of the house welcoming them, it was looking like a really nice place and it was cooler than the air outside. The living room was exactly what Jessie had expected from a guy like Zach—dim lighting, a couple of gaming consoles tangled in wires near the TV, and a faint smell of pizza from what must have been last night’s dinner.
Ryan found Taylor there also ,she was putting on a bra and shorts , there was always a skip in his chest each time he saw her
Hi Ryan , she said with that usual glee she had when speaking
Hello. Ryan replied her with a cool tone
The tension was easy to decode from Jessie, she knew something was up between them
"Make yourselves at home," Zach said, collapsing onto the couch. "Drinks are in the fridge, snacks in the kitchen. Just don’t touch the last slice of pizza unless you’re ready to fight me for it."
Lana sat down beside Taylor ,who offered her a drink ,
She gulped it down at once ,Do you perhaps have something stronger I could take, this isn't enough
Jessie chuckled as she looked around. "Cozy place."
Ryan dropped onto an armchair. "I wouldn’t call it cozy. More like… organized chaos
"Hey, I take offense to that," Zach shot back. "This is curated chaos. There’s a difference."
Lana was already feeling comfortable as Taylor handed her a stronger drink, she made herself comfortable on the other end of the couch, scrolling through her phone. "Right, well, if you guys are gonna sit here and exchange insults all day, I’m going to need more of this Taylor, something stronger than the contents of this to drink."
Ryan shook his head with a laugh. "It's good that you are not the one driving here, Lana. You can go ahead and drink everything ."
Lana shot him a look. "Mind your business man, it's not your business if I drink or not. I’ll be fine."
Jessie watched the interaction with amusement. She didn’t know much about Ryan’s friends yet, but she could tell there was a long history between them. Their fighting and banter felt effortless, like they had been doing this for years.
"So, Jessie," Zach said, turning his attention to her. "How long have you known our dear friend Ryan here?"
Jessie glanced at Ryan, smirking before answering. "I don't know him much, we only started talking as I'm Lana's roommate and that is all about it.
Ryan groaned. "Here we go."
Zach grinned, sitting up. "Oh, so you guys are not really deep like that ?I have to know if you're together. Give me the details."
Jessie tapped her chin as if thinking. "Let’s see… I met him after class today , talking to himself because some lecturer embarrassed him. At first, I thought he was super quiet, maybe even a little grumpy—"
"I am grumpy," Ryan cut in.
Jessie continued as if he hadn’t spoken. "But then, I realized it was his ego, a very common thing Among you rich guys, I saw him go on a rant to himsef wanting payback
Lana rolled her eyes, she had heard this story a million times today
, and I realized—oh, he’s not quiet, he’s just saving his words for when he’s really pissed off."
Lana burst out laughing. "That checks out. I’ve definitely seen that side of him before, you already said it to me earlier
Ryan threw up his hands. "You guys act like I’m the only one who gets annoyed at stupid things, this man legit fried me in front of the whole class."
"You are," Zach said, grinning.
I agree. , Taylor chimed,
You're one to talk, Ryan teased
"Absolutely," Lana agreed.
Jessie held back a laugh. "Anyway, I guess we got along because ,kind of found it amusing that I could talk to him. Or at least, I like to think I do."
Ryan shook his head but couldn't help the small smile forming on his lips.
Zach leaned back. "Well, I like you already, Jessie. Anyone who can roast Ryan without fear is good in my book."
This didn't sit right with Ryan , he hadn't even gotten Jessie officially and Ryan was claiming to like her.
“Hey don't go there” , he said it out
as a joke but low-key meant it
Jessie laughed. "I appreciate the warm welcome."
Chapter 29Lana who had stood up for more drinks returned from the kitchen with a drink in hand, sat back onto the couch. "So, what’s the plan for the day, ? It's a really nice place your parents got here for you Zach , Are we actually doing something, or are we just sitting around making fun of Ryan?"Zach rubbed his Thanks but "I mean, making fun of Ryan is a solid plan, but we could also watch a movie, play some games, or—""Movie," Lana interrupted. "Something dumb and entertaining."at least before we get back to school Zach gestured toward the TV. "Alright, let’s see what we’ve got."As they started flipping through options, Jessie leaned over to Ryan. "This is fun. I can see why you hang out with them."Ryan shrugged, but there was a hint of fondness in his voice. "Yeah… they’re alright.we have our fights all the time but we tight Zach turned back to them with a mischievous grin. "Oh, by the way, Jessie, do you know about Ryan’s horrible taste in movies?"Jessie’s eyes lit up.
Chapter 30**"Well, it better be,"** Justine said, her voice light but teasing. "What are you doing?" She paused for a moment, then sighed. "How inconsiderate of me not to ask about any school stuff. How’s everything going?" Sophia shifted on her bed, staring up at the ceiling as she held the phone to her ear. "It’s okay, cousin. There’s really not much going on here." She hesitated for a split second before blurting out, "I’m going to apply for a job tomorrow, though." She immediately regretted it. She hadn’t planned on saying that—not yet, at least. But the words had already escaped, and there was no taking them back. She knew the reaction from Justine would be something of her being mad Justine went silent for a moment. When she finally spoke, her tone had shifted, it was one filled with concern. **"What do you mean by getting a job, Sophia? I don’t understand what you’re saying. Are you not there to study?"** Sophia sighed. She could sense something deeper in her cousin’s v
Chapter 31She walked over to the window, pressing her palms against the cool surface as she took in the view. She hadn’t spent much time on this side of the room before. From here, she had a clear view of the campus. Despite the darkening sky, the school grounds were still alive with activity. Students walked in groups, some chatting excitedly, others in deep discussion. A few hurried across the pathways, likely trying to get somewhere before it got too late. The light in the school flickered on, casting a kind glow over the walkways. The soft view of life outside reminded her that the world kept moving, no matter what she was dealing with personally. For a moment, Sophia allowed herself to relax. She watched as a group of students gathered around a bench, laughing over something. Another student jogged by, earphones in, focused on their own rhythm. There was something comforting about it all—the predictability of it, the way life went on regardless of how she felt. She sighe
Chapter 32Ryan sat still, his posture was tense, aside exchanging laughs with Jessie, he didn't say much, his mind was racing. Embarrassment burned in his chest like a steady heat. He had let too much slip,—shown too much vulnerability in front of everyone. That wasn’t like him. He prided himself on being composed, unreadable, always the one in control. But tonight, that mask had cracked, and the whole group had seen it Worse still, Taylor had seen it.From his angle, he could tell she knew—really knew—that she had a mark on him. That realization unsettled him more than he cared to admit. Taylor was sharp. He knew that from the time they spent together She could read people like an open book, and now she had confirmation that she still held space in his mind. Even if he didn’t want her to.And then there was Jessie.Ryan’s stomach twisted slightly as he considered what she must be thinking. He did not want to mess things up and throw away his chances with her .Had she picked up on i
Chapter 33 At the cafeteria, Sophia and her roommates had already settled in for dinner. The place was calmer than the night before—less crowded, students were not much there . It was a relief, really. They moved through the line quickly , each of them picking different meals from what they had chosen yesterday.it was equally nice as the previous days Mia, however, stuck with her usual—except this time, she added more protein to her plate. “You know I have to keep up the gains,it is healdt5,” she said with a grin when Sophia gave her a questioning look.Sophia shook her head with a laugh. “You’re serious about this, huh?”“Dead serious,” Mia replied, flexing her arm playfully. “Gotta stay strong.”Olivia, who had been quiet for most of the time, finally chimed in. “Honestly, I just want to eat in peace today. Yesterday was too much.”,plus that girl that was in here, banging on table and yapping about a broken phone about our face Sophia couldn’t help but agree, she had forgotten a
Chapter 34 Mia clapped her hands together. “Oh, I love this. Go get him, tiger.” Sophia groaned but couldn’t deny she was a little curious to see how this would play out. Olivia was bold, there was no questioning that. But was it going to work in her favor this time? As Olivia strode toward the guy’s table, Mia and Sophia exchanged glances. “This is either going to be amazing or a complete mess,” Mia whispered. Sophia smirked. “Either way, it’ll be entertaining.” And with that, they both leaned in to watch as Olivia made her move. “Hey there,” Olivia said to him and sat down in the empty seat in front. “Hi,” he said as he stared at her. His voice was even more attractive. Oh my gosh, she said to herself. “I’m Olivia,” she said as she stretched her hand forward in a handshake. “I’m Jake. Nice to meet you, Olivia. What can I do for you?” he said with the coolest tone as he set aside his plate to stare at Olivia. And Olivia felt all the confidence in her disappear
Chapter 35Ryan chuckled, shaking his head. “Tempting, but I’m trying to be better.” He looked at her then, his expression softer. “Thanks for sticking around, by the way.” Jessie shrugged. “Of course. You’re not as bad as you pretend to be, Ryan.” Ryan grinned. “Don’t ruin my reputation now.” "Come on, let’s get to our hostels. It’s getting dark out here," Jessie said, wrapping her arms around herself as the air grew a little chillier. Ryan smirked. “I’ll walk you to your dorm then. Let’s go.” Jessie shook her head. “You really don’t have to. I can walk there on my own.” Ryan gave her a knowing look. “Well, I insist. And besides, what kind of guy would I be if I just left you to walk alone at this hour?” Jessie rolled her eyes but smiled. “Fine, but only because I don’t feel like arguing.” As they started walking, Ryan looked at her, a slight frown on his face. “Hope I didn’t take up your whole day and ruin whatever plans you had?” Jessie stopped for a moment, as if
Chapter 36 It was already morning when Sophia blinked awake, groggy and still sleepy. The soft morning light was already filtering through the curtain. She rubbed her eyes, then turned her head toward the clock on her bedside table. Her eyes widened.“Shii…” she muttered under her breath. This was the first time she had slept this late since the day she arrived at school, asides the first day when she came for clearance with her cousin. She sat up abruptly, pushing her covers aside as the things that happened the previous night flashed Through her head . It had been fun—probably the best night she’d had since coming to school. She and the girls had stayed up late, laughing, gossiping, and sharing stories until their voices turned loud from all the excitement.A small smile tugged at the corners of her lips. It was nice, having friends she could be herself around. She hadn’t realized how much she needed that sense of belonging. But reality hit her fast. She had overslept.Sophia swu
Chapter 46Lana had just turned the corner when she saw a stranger leave her dorm room. A guy she had never seen before. Tall, dark hair, a confident stride—definitely not someone from their usual circle. She watched as he casually walked down the hall, disappearing around the corner. Her lips curled slightly, both in amusement and irritation. So this was the guy Ryan saw Jessie with. The reason Ryan had spent half the night crashing out Lana wanted to say something to Jessie about it, but then again, what was the point? She wasn’t going to stir up unnecessary drama. If Jessie wanted to sneak around with someone else while Ryan was busy convincing himself she was the love of his life, that was her business. Maybe now, at least, Ryan would finally stop obsessing over her.She shook her head and pushed open the door to the dorm.Jessie was sitting cross-legged on her bed, scrolling through her phone, but she looked up the moment Lana walked in. Her face lit up as she saw her “Hey, Lan
Chapter 45 It was quite late into the night, almost past 11, when Olivia finally returned from her date. She quietly pushed open the door to their dorm, careful not to wake Mia, who was already fast asleep. The lights in the room were turned off save for the bedside lamp, which was left on by Sophia, who was still up, scrolling through her phone.Sophia looked up as Olivia tiptoed in, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "Well, well, look who finally decided to show up," she teased, sitting up and patting the bed beside her. "So, are you going to spill, or am I going to have to drag it out of you?"Olivia grinned as she kicked off her heels, stretching her tired feet. "Oh my God, Sophia, it was amazing!" she whispered excitedly, settling onto the bed. "I don’t even know where to start.""How about from the beginning?" Sophia said, raising an eyebrow. "Glad it was that nice. Like, what even took you so long? I was beginning to think Jake kidnapped you or something."Olivia laughed
Chapter 44The walk to Jessie’s dorm was quiet, aside from Ryan mumbling to himself as he rehearsed his apology."Hey, Jessie, I was a jerk yesterday… no, that sounds too formal… Jessie, I messed up, but I really like you… ugh, too desperate."Lana shook her head, she was scrolling through her phone watching him stress over every word. "Dude, relax. Just be yourself.""Yeah, easy for you to say. You're not the one about to put your heart on the line."She smirked. "Nope and I don't think I ever will be , which is why I am here getting hurt over all this , she said to herself But I am the one who told you this was a bad idea."They reached the dorm building, and Ryan took a deep breath. "Okay. Let’s do this."Lana stood back, arms crossed. "Good luck, lover boy."Ryan shot her a glare before heading inside. As he walked down the hall, Ryan could feel his heart pounding in his chest. This was it. He’d knock, she’d answer, he’d give her the chocolates and note, they’d talk, and maybe—ju
Chapter 43Ryan figured he needed to speak to Jessie. He hadn't seen or spoken to her all day—actually, not since last night’s incident. He felt like he owed her an apology, at least for how things had transpired. Leaving her mid-conversation to answer his mom’s call had been careless. He could have handled it better. Now, as he sat at the café with Lana, he found himself distracted, tapping his fingers against the table while Lana was completely busy with taking pictures of their food. He sighed. Somehow, she had convinced him to buy lunch for both of them, and now she was treating their meal like a personal photoshoot. "Are you planning to eat that or frame it?" Ryan asked, raising an eyebrow as she adjusted the angle of her phone. Lana smirked but didn’t look up. "Food this pretty deserves appreciation." She snapped another picture. "Besides, you paid, so I get to enjoy it however I want."thanks for buying by the way , you owed me after all Ryan rolled his eyes, but his mind
Chapter 42Olivia and Mia soon arrived at the dorm room, as they burst through the door. Without a word, they both rushed to Sophia and wrapped her in a tight hug.“Whoa! What’s this for?” Sophia laughed, caught off guard but secretly enjoying the warmth of their embrace.“Can’t we just hug you?” Mia teased, pulling back slightly.“Yeah, maybe we missed you,” Olivia added with a wink.Sophia narrowed her eyes playfully. “you girls can't be serious. I saw you guys this morning.” And how come you guys always seem to come in together? “Still,” Mia said, flopping onto Sophia’s bed dramatically. “A lot can happen in a few hours, plus you got the job .” and blame Olivia for that ,she is always looking for how to follow meSophia shook her head, grinning. “You two are so weird.”“We know,” Olivia said proudly. “Now, about my date—”“Ah, yes! What time does it start?” Sophia asked, straightening up. “Let’s get you all dressed up.”Olivia glanced at her phone. “In about two hours, but I ne
Chapter 41Ryan let out a dry chuckle. Yeah, well, welcome to my life. And you've always been there Lana smiled a little at that truth There was a moment’s silence before Lana spoke again. ’Okay, but about the whole professors reporting to her thing—what are you going to do about that? You can’t let this keep happening. ’Ryan sighed. 'I don't know. I was thinking about talking to my professors and asking them not to give her updates, but let's be real—if my mom wants information, she'll find a way to get it. 'Lana nodded. 'Of course, she probably has half the faculty in her pocket. 'there is a walsh auditorium for a reasonRyan rubbed his temples. Ugh, don’t even get me started on that. At this point I’d have to assume she paid someone to keep track of my attendance.Lana smiled. 'Anytime you feel the urge to disappear, just give me a call. I'll help you stage a dramatic getaway. 'you know I have your back Ryan chuckled despite himself. "Oh yeah? What’s the plan?"Lana rubbed
Chapter 40Sophia couldn’t wait to share the news with her roommates. Her heart was still racing a little from the excitement of the interview, and the thought of actually getting the job gave her a sense of accomplishment. She quickly pulled out her phone, unlocked it, and opened their group chat."Hey guys, I might be resuming work here anytime soon," she typed, her fingers moving over the keys for a moment before hitting send. The little dot indicating that the message had been delivered made her stomach have a sensation Mia was the first to reply, sending a string of celebratory emojis. "Congratulations, girl! It was never in doubt," she wrote, and Sophia couldn’t help but grin at the message. Mia always knew how to make her feel good about herself. Sophia stared at her phone, waiting for Olivia’s response, but there was no reply yet. It seemed Olivia wasn’t online at the moment. She let out a sigh of relief, feeling like she had something to talk about when Olivia did finally
Chapter 39Sophia exhaled sharply, massaging her wrist as she stepped back. A part of her felt triumphant—seeing Katrina riled up was satisfying. But she didn’t have time for all this She needed to get to Pappies on time, and dealing with Katrina wasn’t on her to-do list. Pulling out her phone, she checked the time. She hadn’t made an official appointment, which she now wondered if she should have, but there was no going back. She had to at least show up and try. As she made her way toward Pappies, the cool afternoon breeze brushed against her skin. It was a short walk from her lecture hall, but it felt unfamiliar. This was the first time she had come to this side of the school, and she took in her surroundings as she walked. The atmosphere was quieter here, with fewer students loitering around. Most of them seemed busy, either in hushed conversations or heading toward different buildings. Sophia adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and quickened her pace. She didn’t wa
Chapter 38As the lecturer stepped into the classroom, Sophia immediately noticed that he was different from the one they had the day before. This man looked to be in his early 40s—perhaps even younger. He carried himself with an air of confidence, his neatly pressed suit giving him a polished yet approachable appearance. Sophia was a little taken aback. She had expected someone much older in this field, considering the depth of knowledge required for public health. But then again, times were changing, and younger professionals were making their mark in academia. The lecturer walked to the center of the class, set down his materials, and offered a friendly smile. “Good morning, everyone,” he greeted. “Good morning, sir,” the class responded in unison. “My name is Dr. Reynolds, and I’ll be taking you through Public Health this semester. I expect all of you to be engaged because this course isn’t just about theories—it’s about real-world applications. Public health affects eve
