Chapter 27

---

"Likewise, boss. I am glad to be here."

"I can see you have made your touches all around the place," Ward said as he smiled.

"Yes, boss. I couldn't stand the look of it. If I'm going to be your PA, some of the duty of cleanup falls on me."

"Well then, thank you once again. It will be nice having you about."

"Oh, you don't need to mention it, as long as I'm getting paid for this."

Ward smiled at her. "It's all about the money with you, isn't it?"

"Just trying to keep things professional," Justine said with a smile.

***

"Why does everything between us have to be so professional?" he asked, leaning against the edge of her new desk, arms crossed, a smirk playing on his lips. "I mean, we were just on a date the other day. I thought it went well. I felt a connection."

His voice was light, teasing, but there was something else beneath it—uncertainty, maybe even disappointment.

Justine inhaled sharply, momentarily caught off guard. She had been hoping to ease into her first day, not dive headfirst into a conversation she wasn’t sure she was ready for. She coughed abruptly, as if clearing away the awkwardness lingering in the air.

---

“Well, I felt the opposite,” she blurted out before she could stop herself. A slight wince came across his face, and for a moment, guilt hit her mind. She hadn’t meant to be so blunt.

She sighed, softening her tone. “Can we talk about this later? I’d really like to focus on today. You know, with it being my first day and all.”

He studied her for a beat, his expression unreadable, then let out a low chuckle. “Yeah, I totally get it. Don’t mix business with pleasure.” He raised his hands in mock surrender, but there was a knowing glint in his eyes. “No judgment.”

Justine exhaled, relieved that he wasn’t going to push the subject—at least not right now. She forced a small smile, hoping to shift the conversation elsewhere.

“Now,” she said, clasping her hands together, “what am I supposed to begin with today, boss?”

A slow grin spread across his face at the title, but he didn’t call her out on it. Instead, he straightened up, tucking his hands into his pockets. “I’ll get to that later. Just get yourself settled in for now.”

He turned and walked toward the door, but before stepping out, he glanced over his shoulder. “And Justine?”

She looked up, a little too quickly. “Yeah?”

His smirk returned. “Welcome to the team.”

With that, he disappeared down the hall, leaving Justine staring after him, her heart kind of beating softly

She let out a long breath, shaking her head. Great. This was going to be an interesting first day.

As she turned to unpack her bag and organize her desk, her mind kept replaying the conversation. The thing was, it hadn’t been a bad date. If anything, it had been... nice. Too nice. And that was exactly the problem.

She had spent years building walls, she was new here and she didn't want her personal life to be the same as her career. She had worked too hard to let emotions complicate things now. But as she sat down, tapping her fingers absently against the desk, she couldn’t shake the feeling that this wasn’t the last time they’d have this conversation.

And worse—she wasn’t sure she wanted it to be.

Olivia and Mia walked into the room together, the scent of warm, cheesy pizza filling the air as they carried a couple of large boxes. The delicious aroma drifted toward Sophia, stirring her from the light nap she had slipped into.

She blinked awake, her eyes still heavy from exhaustion, she didn't know when she fell asleep her face was slightly damp from earlier She had cried herself to sleep, devastated and—if she was being honest—starving.

“Look who’s asleep,” Olivia teased, nudging Mia as she set the pizza down on the desk. “So, she’s the type to wake up early and then take afternoon naps? Interesting.”

Sophia let out a sleepy groan, rubbing her eyes before pushing herself up on her elbows. “Hey, you guys,” she mumbled groggily. “Where have you been?”

Olivia raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?” she said, sliding onto the bed beside her. “Surely you didn’t expect us to just finish class and come straight back here, right?”

Mia laughed, setting the drinks down. “Yeah, Olivia bumped into me, and we decided to take a little tour around campus. Found this really nice school restaurant. And, well… we got pizza for all of us.”

“Well, Mia paid, actually,” Olivia added with a grin, giving her friend a playful nudge.

Mia rolled her eyes, laughing. “Oh, don’t act like you didn’t enjoy it. I saw the way you nearly inhaled that first slice.”

Olivia gasped dramatically. “How dare you expose me like this?” she said, clutching her chest in fake offense.

Sophia chuckled, the first genuine smile tugging at her lips all day. It felt good to have them here, filling the space with laughter, easing the weight in her chest.

“Well, that’s just nice to hear,” she said, stretching as she sat up properly. “I wish I could’ve come with you guys.”

They dropped the boxes to the floor.

"My God, I'm starving! This school really needs to change the class schedule," Mia groaned as she sat on the floor and took out a slice of pizza.

Sophia was salivating, but she didn't want to join in like that—it was quite embarrassing.

"Come on, Sophia, will you not join us? I got this for all of us. Or don’t tell me you've eaten already... have you?"

Normally, Sophia would have said no and declined, but she was starving, and it smelled so good.

"No, I haven't eaten. Are you sure I can join in, though?"

"What kind of question is that? Come on here before it gets cold."

Sophia joined in hesitantly and took a bite, not wanting to seem like a hungry person. She took out a slice, and it was indeed worth it—it was the best she had ever tasted.

"Sorry, where did you say you got this again?" Sophia asked, curious to know.

"Just around school. I think the name is Pappie's Pastry or something. We didn't bother paying attention like that."

Sophia was on her fifth slice, forgetting her previous attempt to be courteous.

"Well, it's really good," she said with a mouthful.

"Yes, it is. The walk was actually worth it then."

They opened up the last box of pizza. Mia said she was full already and left the pizza for Sophia and Olivia, who took only a slice and went to her bed, leaving it all for Sophia.

She didn't want to at first but took it all in. Her roommates didn't seem offended by it—they were actually nice and cool. She couldn't believe her luck with them.

When she was done with the pizza, she thanked them out of courtesy.

"For what? We are all here together. Stop making this to be something else."

---

Sophia smiled and nodded, taking another bite of her pizza. Olivia and Mia would never truly understand how grateful she was for them. Their presence, their kindness—even the smallest gestures like bringing her food—meant everything. She had been having a rough time lately, feeling overwhelmed, but in moments like these, she felt like she wasn’t alone.

As she flipped the pizza box over, her eyes landed on something printed on the back. A bold, colorful ad caught her attention.

**"Do you want to earn while you study? There are part-time jobs available for students at Pappie’s. Apply within!"**

Sophia’s chewing slowed as she read it over again, her mind racing.

A job.

That was exactly what she needed.

With her giving out all her savings to Lana it's only a matter of time before She begins struggling with her expenses—textbooks, daily necessities, even the occasional cup of coffee will soon start to feel like a luxury. If she could find a job near campus, something flexible enough to balance with her studies, it would make a world of difference.

The Excitement was turning up inside her as the thought of this ,but so did hesitation.

Would she be able to manage work and school? Would she have time to rest? And more importantly, would she even get hired?

She cast a look at Olivia and Mia, debating whether she should bring it up. It was a little embarrassing—admitting she needed a job so badly. But embarrassment was something she couldn’t afford right now. What she needed was an opportunity, and this might just be it.

She took a deep breath, mustering up the courage.

Chapter 28“Hey guys, have you seen this?” She lifted the pizza box, showing them the ad. “I think I’m going to apply for this. I need a job on campus.” Olivia leaned forward, dropping the book she was reading as her expression turned serious squinting at the ad. “Pappie’s? Oh, that’s the little place we got you the pizza ,but I don't understand why you need a job. Yeah I am failing to understand too , mia Chimed inLook guys , I am sure you really don't know much about me , but I am different from you girls , the thing is I don't have anyone to support me here Sophia said Her roommates realized this was a sensitive issue and she needed their support on it , which is why she told them I feel like this is going to help out here, at least the little bills Mia nodded. “Yeah, I think I understand you, we were there today . And the staff seemed to be mostly students.” Sophia’s heart lifted slightly. That sounded promising. “Really? So, you think I’d have a shot?” “Of

Chapter 30**"Well, it better be,"** Justine said, her voice light but teasing. "What are you doing?" She paused for a moment, then sighed. "How inconsiderate of me not to ask about any school stuff. How’s everything going?" Sophia shifted on her bed, staring up at the ceiling as she held the phone to her ear. "It’s okay, cousin. There’s really not much going on here." She hesitated for a split second before blurting out, "I’m going to apply for a job tomorrow, though." She immediately regretted it. She hadn’t planned on saying that—not yet, at least. But the words had already escaped, and there was no taking them back. She knew the reaction from Justine would be something of her being mad Justine went silent for a moment. When she finally spoke, her tone had shifted, it was one filled with concern. **"What do you mean by getting a job, Sophia? I don’t understand what you’re saying. Chapter 31She walked over to the window, pressing her palms against the cool surface as she took in the view. She hadn’t spent much time on this side of the room before. From here, she had a clear view of the campus. Despite the darkening sky, the school grounds were still alive with activity. Students walked in groups, some chatting excitedly, others in deep discussion. A few hurried across the pathways, likely trying to get somewhere before it got too late. The light in the school flickered on, casting a kind glow over the walkways. The soft view of life outside reminded her that the world kept moving, no matter what she was dealing with personally. For a moment, Sophia allowed herself to relax. She watched as a group of students gathered around a bench, laughing over something. Another student jogged by, earphones in, focused on their own rhythm. There was something comforting about it all—the predictability of it, the way life went on regardless of how she felt. She sighe

Chapter 32Ryan sat still, his posture was tense, aside exchanging laughs with Jessie, he didn't say much, his mind was racing. Embarrassment burned in his chest like a steady heat. He had let too much slip,—shown too much vulnerability in front of everyone. That wasn’t like him. He prided himself on being composed, unreadable, always the one in control. But tonight, that mask had cracked, and the whole group had seen it Worse still, Taylor had seen it.From his angle, he could tell she knew—really knew—that she had a mark on him. That realization unsettled him more than he cared to admit. Taylor was sharp. He knew that from the time they spent together She could read people like an open book, and now she had confirmation that she still held space in his mind. It was a relief, really. They moved through the line quickly , each of them picking different meals from what they had chosen yesterday.it was equally nice as the previous days Mia, however, stuck with her usual—except this time, she added more protein to her plate. “You know I have to keep up the gains,it is healdt5,” she said with a grin when Sophia gave her a questioning look.Sophia shook her head with a laugh. “You’re serious about this, huh?”“Dead serious,” Mia replied, flexing her arm playfully. “Gotta stay strong.”Olivia, who had been quiet for most of the time, finally chimed in. “Honestly, I just want to eat in peace today. Olivia was bold, there was no questioning that. But was it going to work in her favor this time? As Olivia strode toward the guy’s table, Mia and Sophia exchanged glances. “This is either going to be amazing or a complete mess,” Mia whispered. Sophia smirked. “Either way, it’ll be entertaining.” And with that, they both leaned in to watch as Olivia made her move. “Hey there,” Olivia said to him and sat down in the empty seat in front. “Hi,” he said as he stared at her. His voice was even more attractive. Oh my gosh, she said to herself. “I’m Olivia,” she said as she stretched her hand forward in a handshake. “I’m Jake. Nice to meet you, Olivia. You’re not as bad as you pretend to be, Ryan.” Ryan grinned. “Don’t ruin my reputation now.” "Come on, let’s get to our hostels. It’s getting dark out here," Jessie said, wrapping her arms around herself as the air grew a little chillier. Ryan smirked. “I’ll walk you to your dorm then. Let’s go.” Jessie shook her head. “You really don’t have to. I can walk there on my own.” Ryan gave her a knowing look. “Well, I insist. And besides, what kind of guy would I be if I just left you to walk alone at this hour?” Jessie rolled her eyes but smiled. “Fine, but only because I don’t feel like arguing.” As they started walking, Ryan looked at her, a slight frown on his face. “Hope I didn’t take up your whole day and ruin whatever plans you had?” Jessie stopped for a moment, as if

Chapter 46Lana had just turned the corner when she saw a stranger leave her dorm room. A guy she had never seen before. Tall, dark hair, a confident stride—definitely not someone from their usual circle. She watched as he casually walked down the hall, disappearing around the corner. Her lips curled slightly, both in amusement and irritation. So this was the guy Ryan saw Jessie with. The reason Ryan had spent half the night crashing out Lana wanted to say something to Jessie about it, but then again, what was the point? She wasn’t going to stir up unnecessary drama. If Jessie wanted to sneak around with someone else while Ryan was busy convincing himself she was the love of his life, that was her business. Maybe now, at least, Ryan would finally stop obsessing over her.She shook her head and pushed open the door to the dorm.Jessie was sitting cross-legged on her bed, scrolling through her phone, but she looked up the moment Lana walked in. Chapter 45 It was quite late into the night, almost past 11, when Olivia finally returned from her date. She quietly pushed open the door to their dorm, careful not to wake Mia, who was already fast asleep. The lights in the room were turned off save for the bedside lamp, which was left on by Sophia, who was still up, scrolling through her phone.Sophia looked up as Olivia tiptoed in, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "Well, well, look who finally decided to show up," she teased, sitting up and patting the bed beside her. "So, are you going to spill, or am I going to have to drag it out of you?"Olivia grinned as she kicked off her heels, stretching her tired feet. "Oh my God, Sophia, it was amazing!" she whispered excitedly, settling onto the bed. "I don’t even know where to start.""How about from the beginning?" Sophia said, raising an eyebrow. "Glad it was that nice. Like, what even took you so long? I was beginning to think Jake kidnapped you or something."Olivia laughed

"Dude, relax. Just be yourself.""Yeah, easy for you to say. You're not the one about to put your heart on the line."She smirked. "Nope and I don't think I ever will be , which is why I am here getting hurt over all this , she said to herself But I am the one who told you this was a bad idea."They reached the dorm building, and Ryan took a deep breath. "Okay. Let’s do this."Lana stood back, arms crossed. "Good luck, lover boy."Ryan shot her a glare before heading inside. As he walked down the hall, Ryan could feel his heart pounding in his chest. Chapter 43Ryan figured he needed to speak to Jessie. He hadn't seen or spoken to her all day—actually, not since last night’s incident. He felt like he owed her an apology, at least for how things had transpired. Leaving her mid-conversation to answer his mom’s call had been careless. He could have handled it better. Now, as he sat at the café with Lana, he found himself distracted, tapping his fingers against the table while Lana was completely busy with taking pictures of their food. He sighed. Somehow, she had convinced him to buy lunch for both of them, and now she was treating their meal like a personal photoshoot. "Are you planning to eat that or frame it?" Ryan asked, raising an eyebrow as she adjusted the angle of her phone. Lana smirked but didn’t look up. "Food this pretty deserves appreciation." She snapped another picture. Her heart was still racing a little from the excitement of the interview, and the thought of actually getting the job gave her a sense of accomplishment. She quickly pulled out her phone, unlocked it, and opened their group chat."Hey guys, I might be resuming work here anytime soon," she typed, her fingers moving over the keys for a moment before hitting send. The little dot indicating that the message had been delivered made her stomach have a sensation Mia was the first to reply, sending a string of celebratory emojis. "Congratulations, girl! It was never in doubt," she wrote, and Sophia couldn’t help but grin at the message. Mia always knew how to make her feel good about herself. Sophia stared at her phone, waiting for Olivia’s response, but there was no reply yet. It seemed Olivia wasn’t online at the moment. But she didn’t have time for all this She needed to get to Pappies on time, and dealing with Katrina wasn’t on her to-do list. Pulling out her phone, she checked the time. She hadn’t made an official appointment, which she now wondered if she should have, but there was no going back. She had to at least show up and try. As she made her way toward Pappies, the cool afternoon breeze brushed against her skin. It was a short walk from her lecture hall, but it felt unfamiliar. This was the first time she had come to this side of the school, and she took in her surroundings as she walked. The atmosphere was quieter here, with fewer students loitering around. Most of them seemed busy, either in hushed conversations or heading toward different buildings. Sophia adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and quickened her pace. She didn’t wa

Chapter 38As the lecturer stepped into the classroom, Sophia immediately noticed that he was different from the one they had the day before. This man looked to be in his early 40s—perhaps even younger. He carried himself with an air of confidence, his neatly pressed suit giving him a polished yet approachable appearance. Sophia was a little taken aback. She had expected someone much older in this field, considering the depth of knowledge required for public health. But then again, times were changing, and younger professionals were making their mark in academia. The lecturer walked to the center of the class, set down his materials, and offered a friendly smile. “Good morning, everyone,” he greeted. “Good morning, sir,” the class responded in unison. “My name is Dr. Reynolds, and I’ll be taking you through Public Health this semester. I expect all of you to be engaged because this course isn’t just about theories—it’s about real-world applications. Public health affects eve
