Chapter 23
Sohpia took a deep breath and sat down , it had gone better than she anticipated
Wow I am so sorry about your grandmother Mrs Jameson called ,but wait did you say your name was Sophia? The professor asked again
..the same one who's results was off the charts and we had to offer her a scholarship here
Yes that is me professor Sophia responded to her feeling confident all of a sudden
"Well, it’s great to have you here. When I heard you would be joining this school, I didn’t know it would be our faculty. We’re lucky to have your brain in our presence," Mrs. Jameson teased with a warm smile, her eyes all over Sophia with admiration.
"Thank you, ma," Sophia responded with a bright, polite smile, though inside, her nerves still fluttered. She had worked tirelessly to be here, and hearing praise from a professor on her first day felt like validation.
"So she’s a charity case," a voice scoffed from the front "No wonder she looks so out of place."it all makes sense to me now , imagine the guts of her wanting to sit beside me
Katrina said to her friends it was only audible to them
Her voice, dripping with amusement, was followed by the quiet laughter of her friends. They didn’t even bother to whisper properly—just loud enough for Sophia to hear, just enough to sting.
Sophia's fingers tightened around the strap of her bag, but she didn’t react. She had known stepping into this prestigious school wouldn’t be easy. She had prepared herself for judgment, for whispers, for sideways glances from people who thought she didn’t belong.
Ignore the negativity and focus on the opposite.
Justine’s words echoed in her mind, the same advice her cousin had given her countless times before.
Instead of turning toward Katrina, instead of giving her the reaction she wanted, Sophia exhaled slowly and fixed her eyes forward. The professor had praised her. That was what mattered.
"Alright, now that everyone is done introducing themselves, may we begin?" Mrs. Jameson announced, shifting the class’s attention back to the lecture.
The room fell silent as notebooks were opened and pens clicked.
Sophia allowed herself to breathe again. This was her moment. She wouldn’t let anyone take that away from her.
Meanwhile, in Another Classroom…
Across the campus, in an entirely different classroom, Ryan sat by the window, lost in thought.
The lecture was in full swing, but he wasn’t listening. He wasn’t even pretending to. Instead, his eyes were fixed on the world outside—the movement of students across the lawn, the sway of the trees in the soft wind, the faint hum of life beyond these four walls.
The professor’s voice spoke on, a distant background noise he had long since tuned out.
He had never been the type to care about classes. Not because he wasn’t smart—he was—but because none of this felt important to him. It was just another routine, another day he had to sit through, another set of expectations he had no interest in meeting.
A few seats away, some students were whispering, passing notes, sneaking glances at their phones. At least they were trying to pretend they cared.
Ryan didn’t even bother with that.
"Mr. Walsh the professor’s voice cut through the air.
Ryan blinked, shifting his gaze from the window to the front of the classroom.
"Are we keeping you from something more important?" the professor asked, arms crossed. A few students chuckled under their breath, amused at the teacher calling him out.
Ryan didn’t react. He didn’t flinch, didn’t stammer out an excuse. Instead, he tilted his head slightly, as if considering the question.
"Not really," he said, his voice calm, indifferent.
The class erupted into laughter.
The professor sighed, rubbing his temples. "Just try to pay attention, will you?"
Ryan nodded, but the moment the professor turned back to the board, his eyes drifted once again to the world outside.
He wasn’t trying to be disrespectful. He just didn’t see the point of pretending to care about things that didn’t matter to him.
And right now, this class, this school, this whole place—it all felt meaningless
It was a really exciting class for Sophia , one she didn't want to end , she had grabbed a lot and it was only the first day
Mrs Jameson started from the basics , of how things works and every Intro needed
By the time Mrs. Jameson dismissed the class, Sophia felt both mentally drained and relieved.
She had done well today. She had held her own, taken notes, answered a question correctly, and refused to let Katrina’s words get under her skin.
As she gathered her things, Katrina and her friends walked past her desk, pausing just long enough to drop another comment.
She seemed to be wanting sophia to notice her so bad, Sophia thought, they had only seen each other for a minute and it was looking like she would have to deal with another case of a rich kid disturbing her
"I wonder how long she’ll last here," Katrina said to her and muttered with a smirk. Flipping charity case
Sophia’s heart clenched, but she said nothing.
She wouldn't give them the satisfaction
She stood up and faced her squarely for a moment. Katrina thought Sophia was going to talk back to her , give her a slap or something, but she did nothing of such. Instead she picked up her bag ,made sure her books and pen were complete then turned to leave the classroom
As she exited the classroom, she reminded herself why she was here. Enough trouble had already come to her and was not planning on adding another person to it ,but she knew She wasn’t just another student. She wasn’t a charity case.
She was here to prove herself.to show she can survive against all odds
And no amount of whispers would stop her.
And now she needed a job
When the class was finally over Ryan quickly left left the class , happy it was done with
Ryan stepped out of the classroom, relieved to finally be free.
The last hour had been nothing short of excruciating—sitting through a class he had no interest in, being called out for not paying attention, and worst of all, not being able to answer a single question when put on the spot. The professor had clearly enjoyed that moment, watching him stumble over his words in front of the class. Not because he cared anyway, but he felt the professor could have found better ways , instead of calling him out in public
Ryan hated that.
He shoved his hands into his pockets, fuming to himself as he made his way down the hallway. He didn’t care much for school, but that didn’t mean he enjoyed being embarrassed, especially not in front of people who would remember it.
**I’ll show him never to treat a member of the Walsh family badly.** This man doesn't know my family is one of the biggest donors in this school, the guts on him
The thought burned in his mind. His family name carried weight, and he knew he should do better and should try to always flaunt it, that way he will be respected. More so he wasn’t about to let some underpaid professor think he could humiliate him and get away with it.
Ryan wasn’t one to take embarrassment lightly.
A plan was already forming in his head, a way to make sure that professor regretted ever calling him out. Maybe he’d pull some strings, file a complaint, or even get his mother involved.it was a stretch for such a little thing but he didn't care It wouldn’t be the first time his family had made a problem disappear.
But before he could dwell
on it further, a voice interrupted his thoughts.
"Hey, you."
Chapter 24A soft, almost melodic voice. Ryan turned around, his frustration still lingering—until he saw her. Jessie. Lana’s roommate from yesterday. Just like that, his anger evaporated. His frown was replaced with something softer, something closer to amusement. He couldn't believe his luck ,just when he had been troubling Lana to help him out with her. He hadn’t expected to see her again so soon, and definitely not like this. She stood a few feet away, arms crossed, looking at him with mild curiosity. She had that same confident but effortless air about her, like she wasn’t trying too hard to be noticed—yet somehow, he couldn’t look away. His luck today might not have been all bad after all. "Jessie," he said, trying (and failing) to hide his excitement. "Didn’t think I’d run into you again so soon." I literally asked after you from lanaJessie raised an eyebrow. "I figured as much. You did seem too interested in talking last night." Ryan chuckled, scratching the
Chapter 25 Her own childhood had been… different. Birthdays were kind of alien to her—sometimes just her, her grandmother, and Justine sitting at the tiny dining table with a single cupcake between them. No extravagant cakes, no mountain of presents. Just the three of them and the quiet understanding that love didn’t need to be expensive. She pulled her gaze away from the screen and stared at the ceiling. It wasn’t fair. But then again, life had never really been fair. She exhaled and reached for another chip, chewing slowly as she stared at the dim glow of her phone screen. Maybe it was pointless to dwell on things like this. From a comment on the page, she stumbled upon a picture that looked familiar. She clicked on it and knew she was right in an instant—it was the mean girl she had to give all her savings to. Lana. She, too, seemed the wealthy type, but nothing close to Katrina, as her page was filled with pictures of her at all sorts of parties, drinks in hand. On
Chapter 26Justine got dressed in a bodycon dress. She had to look corporate for the firm, with the intention of resuming work today. The boss—the one who had shown interest in her—had called yesterday. She did the needful at home before leaving for work. It was going to be the easiest job yet; all it entailed was being a personal assistant. She got to the firm quite late and met the receptionist—the same one who had been mean to her when she applied. She was going to enjoy this, working with the person who hadn’t seen her as worthy."Good morning," Justine said as loudly as she could when she walked in. "May I have the keys to the manager's office?""I'm sorry, are you the new PA?" the receptionist asked.Justine ignored the question, just as the receptionist had ignored her back then. The receptionist quickly looked up the staff list and saw that Justine had indeed been employed."I apologize, ma'am. Here is the key. You are welcome to our establishment; it's a pleasure looking forw
Chapter 27---"Likewise, boss. I am glad to be here." "I can see you have made your touches all around the place," Ward said as he smiled. "Yes, boss. I couldn't stand the look of it. If I'm going to be your PA, some of the duty of cleanup falls on me." "Well then, thank you once again. It will be nice having you about." "Oh, you don't need to mention it, as long as I'm getting paid for this." Ward smiled at her. "It's all about the money with you, isn't it?" "Just trying to keep things professional," Justine said with a smile. *** "Why does everything between us have to be so professional?" he asked, leaning against the edge of her new desk, arms crossed, a smirk playing on his lips. "I mean, we were just on a date the other day. I thought it went well. I felt a connection." His voice was light, teasing, but there was something else beneath it—uncertainty, maybe even disappointment. Justine inhaled sharply, momentarily caught off guard. She had been hoping to eas
Chapter 28“Hey guys, have you seen this?” She lifted the pizza box, showing them the ad. “I think I’m going to apply for this. I need a job on campus.” Olivia leaned forward, dropping the book she was reading as her expression turned serious squinting at the ad. “Pappie’s? Oh, that’s the little place we got you the pizza ,but I don't understand why you need a job. Yeah I am failing to understand too , mia Chimed inLook guys , I am sure you really don't know much about me , but I am different from you girls , the thing is I don't have anyone to support me here Sophia said Her roommates realized this was a sensitive issue and she needed their support on it , which is why she told them I feel like this is going to help out here, at least the little bills Mia nodded. “Yeah, I think I understand you, we were there today . And the staff seemed to be mostly students.” Sophia’s heart lifted slightly. That sounded promising. “Really? So, you think I’d have a shot?” “Of
Chapter 29Lana who had stood up for more drinks returned from the kitchen with a drink in hand, sat back onto the couch. "So, what’s the plan for the day, ? It's a really nice place your parents got here for you Zach , Are we actually doing something, or are we just sitting around making fun of Ryan?"Zach rubbed his Thanks but "I mean, making fun of Ryan is a solid plan, but we could also watch a movie, play some games, or—""Movie," Lana interrupted. "Something dumb and entertaining."at least before we get back to school Zach gestured toward the TV. "Alright, let’s see what we’ve got."As they started flipping through options, Jessie leaned over to Ryan. "This is fun. I can see why you hang out with them."Ryan shrugged, but there was a hint of fondness in his voice. "Yeah… they’re alright.we have our fights all the time but we tight Zach turned back to them with a mischievous grin. "Oh, by the way, Jessie, do you know about Ryan’s horrible taste in movies?"Jessie’s eyes lit up.
Chapter 30**"Well, it better be,"** Justine said, her voice light but teasing. "What are you doing?" She paused for a moment, then sighed. "How inconsiderate of me not to ask about any school stuff. How’s everything going?" Sophia shifted on her bed, staring up at the ceiling as she held the phone to her ear. "It’s okay, cousin. There’s really not much going on here." She hesitated for a split second before blurting out, "I’m going to apply for a job tomorrow, though." She immediately regretted it. She hadn’t planned on saying that—not yet, at least. But the words had already escaped, and there was no taking them back. She knew the reaction from Justine would be something of her being mad Justine went silent for a moment. When she finally spoke, her tone had shifted, it was one filled with concern. **"What do you mean by getting a job, Sophia? I don’t understand what you’re saying. Are you not there to study?"** Sophia sighed. She could sense something deeper in her cousin’s v
Chapter 31She walked over to the window, pressing her palms against the cool surface as she took in the view. She hadn’t spent much time on this side of the room before. From here, she had a clear view of the campus. Despite the darkening sky, the school grounds were still alive with activity. Students walked in groups, some chatting excitedly, others in deep discussion. A few hurried across the pathways, likely trying to get somewhere before it got too late. The light in the school flickered on, casting a kind glow over the walkways. The soft view of life outside reminded her that the world kept moving, no matter what she was dealing with personally. For a moment, Sophia allowed herself to relax. She watched as a group of students gathered around a bench, laughing over something. Another student jogged by, earphones in, focused on their own rhythm. There was something comforting about it all—the predictability of it, the way life went on regardless of how she felt. She sighe
Chapter 46Lana had just turned the corner when she saw a stranger leave her dorm room. A guy she had never seen before. Tall, dark hair, a confident stride—definitely not someone from their usual circle. She watched as he casually walked down the hall, disappearing around the corner. Her lips curled slightly, both in amusement and irritation. So this was the guy Ryan saw Jessie with. The reason Ryan had spent half the night crashing out Lana wanted to say something to Jessie about it, but then again, what was the point? She wasn’t going to stir up unnecessary drama. If Jessie wanted to sneak around with someone else while Ryan was busy convincing himself she was the love of his life, that was her business. Maybe now, at least, Ryan would finally stop obsessing over her.She shook her head and pushed open the door to the dorm.Jessie was sitting cross-legged on her bed, scrolling through her phone, but she looked up the moment Lana walked in. Her face lit up as she saw her “Hey, Lan
Chapter 45 It was quite late into the night, almost past 11, when Olivia finally returned from her date. She quietly pushed open the door to their dorm, careful not to wake Mia, who was already fast asleep. The lights in the room were turned off save for the bedside lamp, which was left on by Sophia, who was still up, scrolling through her phone.Sophia looked up as Olivia tiptoed in, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "Well, well, look who finally decided to show up," she teased, sitting up and patting the bed beside her. "So, are you going to spill, or am I going to have to drag it out of you?"Olivia grinned as she kicked off her heels, stretching her tired feet. "Oh my God, Sophia, it was amazing!" she whispered excitedly, settling onto the bed. "I don’t even know where to start.""How about from the beginning?" Sophia said, raising an eyebrow. "Glad it was that nice. Like, what even took you so long? I was beginning to think Jake kidnapped you or something."Olivia laughed
Chapter 44The walk to Jessie’s dorm was quiet, aside from Ryan mumbling to himself as he rehearsed his apology."Hey, Jessie, I was a jerk yesterday… no, that sounds too formal… Jessie, I messed up, but I really like you… ugh, too desperate."Lana shook her head, she was scrolling through her phone watching him stress over every word. "Dude, relax. Just be yourself.""Yeah, easy for you to say. You're not the one about to put your heart on the line."She smirked. "Nope and I don't think I ever will be , which is why I am here getting hurt over all this , she said to herself But I am the one who told you this was a bad idea."They reached the dorm building, and Ryan took a deep breath. "Okay. Let’s do this."Lana stood back, arms crossed. "Good luck, lover boy."Ryan shot her a glare before heading inside. As he walked down the hall, Ryan could feel his heart pounding in his chest. This was it. He’d knock, she’d answer, he’d give her the chocolates and note, they’d talk, and maybe—ju
Chapter 43Ryan figured he needed to speak to Jessie. He hadn't seen or spoken to her all day—actually, not since last night’s incident. He felt like he owed her an apology, at least for how things had transpired. Leaving her mid-conversation to answer his mom’s call had been careless. He could have handled it better. Now, as he sat at the café with Lana, he found himself distracted, tapping his fingers against the table while Lana was completely busy with taking pictures of their food. He sighed. Somehow, she had convinced him to buy lunch for both of them, and now she was treating their meal like a personal photoshoot. "Are you planning to eat that or frame it?" Ryan asked, raising an eyebrow as she adjusted the angle of her phone. Lana smirked but didn’t look up. "Food this pretty deserves appreciation." She snapped another picture. "Besides, you paid, so I get to enjoy it however I want."thanks for buying by the way , you owed me after all Ryan rolled his eyes, but his mind
Chapter 42Olivia and Mia soon arrived at the dorm room, as they burst through the door. Without a word, they both rushed to Sophia and wrapped her in a tight hug.“Whoa! What’s this for?” Sophia laughed, caught off guard but secretly enjoying the warmth of their embrace.“Can’t we just hug you?” Mia teased, pulling back slightly.“Yeah, maybe we missed you,” Olivia added with a wink.Sophia narrowed her eyes playfully. “you girls can't be serious. I saw you guys this morning.” And how come you guys always seem to come in together? “Still,” Mia said, flopping onto Sophia’s bed dramatically. “A lot can happen in a few hours, plus you got the job .” and blame Olivia for that ,she is always looking for how to follow meSophia shook her head, grinning. “You two are so weird.”“We know,” Olivia said proudly. “Now, about my date—”“Ah, yes! What time does it start?” Sophia asked, straightening up. “Let’s get you all dressed up.”Olivia glanced at her phone. “In about two hours, but I ne
Chapter 41Ryan let out a dry chuckle. Yeah, well, welcome to my life. And you've always been there Lana smiled a little at that truth There was a moment’s silence before Lana spoke again. ’Okay, but about the whole professors reporting to her thing—what are you going to do about that? You can’t let this keep happening. ’Ryan sighed. 'I don't know. I was thinking about talking to my professors and asking them not to give her updates, but let's be real—if my mom wants information, she'll find a way to get it. 'Lana nodded. 'Of course, she probably has half the faculty in her pocket. 'there is a walsh auditorium for a reasonRyan rubbed his temples. Ugh, don’t even get me started on that. At this point I’d have to assume she paid someone to keep track of my attendance.Lana smiled. 'Anytime you feel the urge to disappear, just give me a call. I'll help you stage a dramatic getaway. 'you know I have your back Ryan chuckled despite himself. "Oh yeah? What’s the plan?"Lana rubbed
Chapter 40Sophia couldn’t wait to share the news with her roommates. Her heart was still racing a little from the excitement of the interview, and the thought of actually getting the job gave her a sense of accomplishment. She quickly pulled out her phone, unlocked it, and opened their group chat."Hey guys, I might be resuming work here anytime soon," she typed, her fingers moving over the keys for a moment before hitting send. The little dot indicating that the message had been delivered made her stomach have a sensation Mia was the first to reply, sending a string of celebratory emojis. "Congratulations, girl! It was never in doubt," she wrote, and Sophia couldn’t help but grin at the message. Mia always knew how to make her feel good about herself. Sophia stared at her phone, waiting for Olivia’s response, but there was no reply yet. It seemed Olivia wasn’t online at the moment. She let out a sigh of relief, feeling like she had something to talk about when Olivia did finally
Chapter 39Sophia exhaled sharply, massaging her wrist as she stepped back. A part of her felt triumphant—seeing Katrina riled up was satisfying. But she didn’t have time for all this She needed to get to Pappies on time, and dealing with Katrina wasn’t on her to-do list. Pulling out her phone, she checked the time. She hadn’t made an official appointment, which she now wondered if she should have, but there was no going back. She had to at least show up and try. As she made her way toward Pappies, the cool afternoon breeze brushed against her skin. It was a short walk from her lecture hall, but it felt unfamiliar. This was the first time she had come to this side of the school, and she took in her surroundings as she walked. The atmosphere was quieter here, with fewer students loitering around. Most of them seemed busy, either in hushed conversations or heading toward different buildings. Sophia adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and quickened her pace. She didn’t wa
Chapter 38As the lecturer stepped into the classroom, Sophia immediately noticed that he was different from the one they had the day before. This man looked to be in his early 40s—perhaps even younger. He carried himself with an air of confidence, his neatly pressed suit giving him a polished yet approachable appearance. Sophia was a little taken aback. She had expected someone much older in this field, considering the depth of knowledge required for public health. But then again, times were changing, and younger professionals were making their mark in academia. The lecturer walked to the center of the class, set down his materials, and offered a friendly smile. “Good morning, everyone,” he greeted. “Good morning, sir,” the class responded in unison. “My name is Dr. Reynolds, and I’ll be taking you through Public Health this semester. I expect all of you to be engaged because this course isn’t just about theories—it’s about real-world applications. Public health affects eve
