Chapter 13
"Why did you punch him? I mean, I know he deserves it, but you shouldn't have!" Lana said to Ryan as soon as they got to their home.
The single punch from Ryan had knocked Zach out, and he was sent out by the security at the club.
"I should have punched harder," Ryan muttered under his breath. "I think I need a drink, Lana. Do you have one somewhere?"
"No, I don’t. Please stop this, Ryan. You’ve had enough drinks for today, and I can't help but feel guilty. Maybe I shouldn't have invited you to the party anyway. It was dumb. I guess I just wanted to see you," she admitted.
"Nah, don't say that. I kind of needed it to clear my head from all this," Ryan replied.
"Ryan scoffed, rubbing his knuckles. "I should’ve punched him harder," he muttered under his breath, dropping onto the couch with a tired sigh. "That guy is a troublesome person. Always running his mouth like he owns the world."
Lana sighed, kicking off her heels and sitting beside him. "Yeah, well, now he’s probably nursing a swollen jaw and plotting his revenge. You do know Zach isn’t the type to let things go, right?"
Ryan shrugged, leaning his head back. "Let him try. He started it. I finished it."
She rolled her eyes, turning to face him. "Honestly, Ryan, what’s going on with you? I mean, I’ve seen you mad before, but tonight? You were really on edge. And don’t even get me started on the drinking contest. What the hell was that about?"
Ryan exhaled slowly, staring at the ceiling. "I don’t know," he admitted. "I just—he kept pushing, and I couldn’t back down. Everyone was watching, and I guess I had a point to prove."
Lana crossed her arms, studying him. "A point to prove to who? Zach? Taylor? Yourself?"
Ryan frowned, looking away. He hated how Lana always saw right through him. He let out a humorless chuckle. "You know, you’d make a terrible therapist. Too damn insightful."
She smirked, nudging his shoulder. "I take that as a compliment."
Ryan suddenly sat up. "I think I need a drink, Lana. Do you have one somewhere?"
Her expression immediately darkened. "No. And even if I did, I wouldn’t give it to you. You’ve had enough for today."
He groaned, flopping back down. "Come on, just one more."
"Nope," she said firmly. "You’re done for the night."
Ryan huffed, looking at her sideways. "You sound like my mom."
"Good, because she’s right about you being reckless," Lana shot back. "And honestly, I can’t help but feel guilty. Maybe I shouldn’t have invited you to the party anyway. It was dumb. I guess I just… wanted to see you."
Ryan blinked at her. The way she said it made something stir inside him, something he didn’t quite understand. He turned his head slightly to face her, their eyes meeting in the dimly lit room.
"You wanted to see me?" he asked, a lazy smirk forming on his lips.
Lana rolled her eyes, but there was a hint of nervousness in her expression. "Oh, shut up. Don’t get cocky about it."
Ryan chuckled, stretching his legs out. "Too late."
Lana sighed, shaking her head. "You’re impossible."
For a moment, there was silence between them, the kind that wasn’t uncomfortable but instead felt… familiar.
Ryan broke it first. "You know, you’re one of the few people who actually gets me."
Lana smiled softly. "Of course I do, idiot. We’ve been friends forever. And despite all the dumb stuff you do, I still care about you."
Ryan felt something warm settle in his chest, but before he could respond, he let out a long yawn. His eyelids suddenly felt heavier, and he stretched his arms before slumping further into the couch.
"Ugh, I’m exhausted," he muttered, closing his eyes.
Lana watched as his breathing slowed, and within minutes, he was out like a light. She shook her head fondly, grabbing a blanket and draping it over him.
"You’re such a mess, Walsh," she murmured before switching off the lamp and heading to her room.
Ryan might have had a wild night, but at least he was safe. That was enough for Lana.
The day had finally arrived—the day Sophia was to begin a new chapter in her life. Excitement and nervousness swirled inside her as she zipped up her suitcase, glancing around her childhood bedroom one last time. It felt surreal. She had spent years in this house, creating memories, and now she was about to leave it all behind for university.
Her grandmother sat on the couch, watching her with a soft, proud smile. Sophia could see the sadness in her eyes, even though she tried to hide it. This was an emotional moment for both of them.
"Come here, child," her grandmother said, opening her arms.
Sophia rushed to embrace her, wrapping her arms tightly around the woman who had raised her with so much love and care. "I’m going to miss you so much, Grandma," she whispered, her voice breaking slightly.
Her grandmother stroked her hair gently. "And I will miss you, my dear. But this is your time to grow, to learn, and to chase your dreams. I am so proud of you, Sophia. Never forget that."
Tears welled in Sophia’s eyes, but she fought to keep them from falling. She didn’t want to break down now. Instead, she took a deep breath and pulled away slightly, forcing a small smile. "I’ll call every day, I promise."
Her grandmother chuckled. "No need to call every day, child. Just focus on your studies and take care of yourself. But do call me once in a while, so I know you’re eating properly."
Sophia laughed lightly, wiping her eyes. "I will, I promise."
She turned to Justine, her cousin ,best friend and roommate for years. "Take care of Grandma for me, okay?"
Justine gave her a reassuring nod. "You know I will. Now go before you change your mind and decide to stay."
Sophia let out a deep breath, grabbed her suitcase, and took one last look at her home. With a final hug and a tearful goodbye, she stepped out the door, ready to embrace the unknown. A new journey awaited her, and she was ready to face it.
She didn't take the bus this time around, it was going to be too messy , there was a ride Justine helped her arranged one to take her there.
The drive this time around seemed shorter than yesterday, soon she arrived at the gates of the school
“ You better start getting used to this ,we are going to spend most of our next 2-3 years of our life here” she Said to herself
She got down from the car with her luggage , and walked into the school, for the second time this week, only this time she wasn't leaving anytime soon
A lot of People were also resuming along with her, it was a large crowd different from yesterday
They were a whole lot of people trooping into the school most of them came along with them Sophia sighed, she couldn't relate to this ,having parents bring her and help her along ,in that moment she felt empty and craved a little motherly love
Sophia shook off the overwhelming feeling of unfamiliarity and continued walking. She wasn’t sure if it was nervousness or excitement—or maybe a mix of both—but she refused to let it get to her. This was a new chapter, and she had to face it with confidence.
As she walked past a small newspaper stand, something caught her eye. A magazine was displayed at the edge of the stall, and the cover boasted a bold headline: **"New Student Guide: Everything You Need to Know About Campus."**
Her heart skipped a beat. **This is exactly what I need!** She quickly bought a copy, flipping through its pages with eager fingers. She had been wandering around for a while now, too shy to stop anyone and ask for directions. Justine would have laughed at her hesitation, teasing her about how she always avoided talking to strangers.
According to the email she received, her dorm room was located in **Block 5 of the Girls’ Hostel**, but she had no idea where that was. Luckily, the magazine had a campus map, and after scanning it for a moment, she found what she was looking for. **All she had to do was keep walking straight, take a right turn, and she’d be there.**
She followed the directions carefully, and soon enough, the tall buildings of the hostel blocks stood right in front of her. **This must be the place.** She could see groups of girls walking in the same direction, some chatting excitedly while others dragged their suitcases behind them.
She took a deep breath. **This is my new home now.**
As she climbed the flight of stairs leading to her assigned room, thoughts swirled in her mind. **What will my roommates be like? Will they be friendly? Will we get along?**
Sophia was naturally reserved, and the idea of living with strangers was both thrilling and intimidating. But she reassured herself. **Everything will sort
itself out.** She reached the door of her new room, took a deep breath, and pushed it open.
Chapter 14*Get up, Ryan!” Lana’s voice rang out as she shook him. Ryan groaned in response, barely opening his eyes. His head pounded like a drum, a clear result of last night’s events. He had barely made it to bed before crashing, and now, waking up felt like torture. “Leave me alone,” he mumbled, pulling a pillow over his head. Lana rolled her eyes. “No way. You have to get up. Do you know what time it is?” “Too early,” Ryan muttered, refusing to move. Lana huffed. “**It’s already late , idiot!** We have to leave for campus today, remember you have even gotten your bags packed or something, your mum called me and I had to tell her you're staying here with me , luckily she took pity for your good deed and decided to have one of the maids pack it upBut Ryan was hardly listening to a word she said he was still feeling very groggy from sleep , He knew If he had gone home last night the current situation would have been worstRyan groaned louder this time. The events of last
Chapter 15Sophia slowly stepped into her new dorm room. She scanned around trying to take it in , this was going to take a while to get used to ,but the room looked very nice The room was cozy, with three beds neatly arranged. It had a sweet centre rug that looked like fur. At one corner of the room was something that looked like an office table. It looked very good to study while she looked back at the beds again. Two were already occupied, with suitcases and personal belongings scattered around them. The air smelled faintly of lavender, probably from one of the girls’ perfumes. Or it could be the air freshener but it did leave a sweet scent on her nose One of the beds was empty— it was most likely to behersAs she stepped in further, one of the girls, her room mate was already in ,a bubbly-looking brunette with long hair , lovely eyes and she seemed to be carrying a wide smile, turned to her. “Hey! Are you with us ? You must be our third occupant in this room then ,what your name
Chapter 16 oh yes that's true Lana backed him up ,it would be sad seeing you lose your job over something so little, why don't you do all of us here a favor and get these bags ?, Lana smiled also as she said this ,she and Ryan have always been full of mischief The janitor quickly apologized and obliged ,right away sir, he bent down and pick up the bags please forgive my ignorance, I had no idea it was that way It's not a problem ,but you did hurt my feelings at first Ryan jeered on , acting like he didn't know what he was doing**"Apologies once again, sir. Where did you say you were headed?"** Ryan let out a dramatic sigh. **"The dorms. I need to get to my room this instant."** Henry, the janitor, gave a small nod of understanding. "I know where it is. It’s just around the block. This way."** He turned and started walking ahead of them at a steady pace. Ryan smirked and glanced at Lana, who was eyeing him with thinly veiled disapproval. “You really are a crook," she mut
Chapter 17A woman stood there, watching her with an amused but knowing expression. She was tall, with sharp yet graceful features, wearing a crisp lab coat over a dark blouse. Her intelligent eyes gleamed behind thin-rimmed glasses, and she carried herself with an air of quiet authority. Sophia immediately recognized her—Professor Evelyn Carter. She was the one meant to lead the induction session for new students. But Sophia hadn’t seen her enter the room. Had she been there the whole time, silently observing her? **“I see you’re the curious type, aren’t you?”** the professor said, stepping closer. Sophia’s face burned with embarrassment. She suddenly felt foolish for letting her curiosity get the better of her. She quickly pulled her hand back, clasping it tightly to her chest as if that would erase what she had done. **“I—I’m sorry, ma’am,”** she stammered. **“I didn’t mean to—”** Professor Carter held up a hand, cutting her off with a slight smile. **“Relax, dear. I’m no
Chapter 18 "You know what? I think you are rude as hell, and I'm sorry I interrupted you in the first place." Lana totally ignored her and faced the window. "What is your name, by the way?" The girl continued talking and still got no response from Lana. "Okay, listen, there are four of us in this room. If this is going to work out, we are going to need to communicate. But I'm not one to force anything. Well, in case you are listening, my name is Jessie, and there are two other girls in here. Both went for the induction and will be back soon. And I don't think they will like all this hostility. We haven't done anything wrong to you, have we? Be for real." Lana realized the girl was right. They'd done nothing to her. Maybe she should finally give it an opportunity. She decided to speak. "My name is Lana, and I'm sorry I sounded rude earlier. I was just pissed because of someone I ran into on the way here. She kind of ruined my phone and my mood by extension. Plus, the se
Chapter 19And he definitely seemed to have an interest in Jessie. "I think that is enough introductions," Lana said as she cut off their conversation. Ryan frowned at this a little but couldn't say anything as Lana started with the questions. "So, how do you like your room, Ryan? And your roommates?" "Argh," Ryan exclaimed. "I don't want to talk about it. It's terrible." "The bed is way smaller than what I have at home. I'm used to sleeping in a king-sized bed…" Lana rolled her eyes at this. "There's no jacuzzi. How am I meant to relax?" "Let it go, man. This is a university, not a relaxation resort," Lana blurted out. She couldn't help but feel Ryan was kind of bragging to look good in front of Jessie. She had seen it play out a couple of times, so she could spot when Ryan was doing it from a mile away. "And then my roommates—they all seem to know each other, like they were passing some kind of smoke around, it seems," Ryan said as he took a slice out of his bacon.
Chapter 20She was jolted from her thoughts by the sound of her phone ringing."Who could it be?" she said to herself as the caller ID displayed on the screen. It was Justine. She immediately sat up."Hey, cousin!!" Justine's familiar voice called over from the other end. "How was the first day at school? Sorry I missed your call, was busy helping Grandma take a bath. Not to sound lazy, but I miss having you around already."Sophia laughed out as she heard this—one of the few times she had smiled genuinely in this shitty day."Well, school is fine, and about Grandma, don't worry, you will get used to it with time," Sophia replied."Why do you sound like that?" her cousin asked. "Sophie?? What happened at school today?"Justine was the type that was very observant with everything. She could tell when something was wrong—any slight change in Sophia's voice or attitude, and Justine would pick it up and question her. At this point, it was clearly looking like something was off."Nothing i
Chapter 21Eleanor Walsh was an industrious and ambitious woman with a competitive spirit. It was one of the reasons she was well respected among her peers. She had a relentless drive, always aiming to outdo herself and those around her. Settling for mediocrity was never an option. While others dreamed in silence, she turned her aspirations into action, making bold moves even in the face of uncertainty. At an early age, Eleanor was already pitching business ideas to huge firms and companies, waiting for a positive response. Some would listen, entertained by her confidence, while others dismissed her outright, finding her too young, too eager. But rejection never deterred her. She had a sharp mind and an even sharper will. If one door closed, she would knock on another—until she found the one that opened. She wasn't the type to be played with. Born into a fairly wealthy family, Eleanor had always been provided for, but comfort never softened her ambition. Her parents, especially he
Chapter 46Lana had just turned the corner when she saw a stranger leave her dorm room. A guy she had never seen before. Tall, dark hair, a confident stride—definitely not someone from their usual circle. She watched as he casually walked down the hall, disappearing around the corner. Her lips curled slightly, both in amusement and irritation. So this was the guy Ryan saw Jessie with. The reason Ryan had spent half the night crashing out Lana wanted to say something to Jessie about it, but then again, what was the point? She wasn’t going to stir up unnecessary drama. If Jessie wanted to sneak around with someone else while Ryan was busy convincing himself she was the love of his life, that was her business. Maybe now, at least, Ryan would finally stop obsessing over her.She shook her head and pushed open the door to the dorm.Jessie was sitting cross-legged on her bed, scrolling through her phone, but she looked up the moment Lana walked in. Her face lit up as she saw her “Hey, Lan
Chapter 45 It was quite late into the night, almost past 11, when Olivia finally returned from her date. She quietly pushed open the door to their dorm, careful not to wake Mia, who was already fast asleep. The lights in the room were turned off save for the bedside lamp, which was left on by Sophia, who was still up, scrolling through her phone.Sophia looked up as Olivia tiptoed in, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "Well, well, look who finally decided to show up," she teased, sitting up and patting the bed beside her. "So, are you going to spill, or am I going to have to drag it out of you?"Olivia grinned as she kicked off her heels, stretching her tired feet. "Oh my God, Sophia, it was amazing!" she whispered excitedly, settling onto the bed. "I don’t even know where to start.""How about from the beginning?" Sophia said, raising an eyebrow. "Glad it was that nice. Like, what even took you so long? I was beginning to think Jake kidnapped you or something."Olivia laughed
Chapter 44The walk to Jessie’s dorm was quiet, aside from Ryan mumbling to himself as he rehearsed his apology."Hey, Jessie, I was a jerk yesterday… no, that sounds too formal… Jessie, I messed up, but I really like you… ugh, too desperate."Lana shook her head, she was scrolling through her phone watching him stress over every word. "Dude, relax. Just be yourself.""Yeah, easy for you to say. You're not the one about to put your heart on the line."She smirked. "Nope and I don't think I ever will be , which is why I am here getting hurt over all this , she said to herself But I am the one who told you this was a bad idea."They reached the dorm building, and Ryan took a deep breath. "Okay. Let’s do this."Lana stood back, arms crossed. "Good luck, lover boy."Ryan shot her a glare before heading inside. As he walked down the hall, Ryan could feel his heart pounding in his chest. This was it. He’d knock, she’d answer, he’d give her the chocolates and note, they’d talk, and maybe—ju
Chapter 43Ryan figured he needed to speak to Jessie. He hadn't seen or spoken to her all day—actually, not since last night’s incident. He felt like he owed her an apology, at least for how things had transpired. Leaving her mid-conversation to answer his mom’s call had been careless. He could have handled it better. Now, as he sat at the café with Lana, he found himself distracted, tapping his fingers against the table while Lana was completely busy with taking pictures of their food. He sighed. Somehow, she had convinced him to buy lunch for both of them, and now she was treating their meal like a personal photoshoot. "Are you planning to eat that or frame it?" Ryan asked, raising an eyebrow as she adjusted the angle of her phone. Lana smirked but didn’t look up. "Food this pretty deserves appreciation." She snapped another picture. "Besides, you paid, so I get to enjoy it however I want."thanks for buying by the way , you owed me after all Ryan rolled his eyes, but his mind
Chapter 42Olivia and Mia soon arrived at the dorm room, as they burst through the door. Without a word, they both rushed to Sophia and wrapped her in a tight hug.“Whoa! What’s this for?” Sophia laughed, caught off guard but secretly enjoying the warmth of their embrace.“Can’t we just hug you?” Mia teased, pulling back slightly.“Yeah, maybe we missed you,” Olivia added with a wink.Sophia narrowed her eyes playfully. “you girls can't be serious. I saw you guys this morning.” And how come you guys always seem to come in together? “Still,” Mia said, flopping onto Sophia’s bed dramatically. “A lot can happen in a few hours, plus you got the job .” and blame Olivia for that ,she is always looking for how to follow meSophia shook her head, grinning. “You two are so weird.”“We know,” Olivia said proudly. “Now, about my date—”“Ah, yes! What time does it start?” Sophia asked, straightening up. “Let’s get you all dressed up.”Olivia glanced at her phone. “In about two hours, but I ne
Chapter 41Ryan let out a dry chuckle. Yeah, well, welcome to my life. And you've always been there Lana smiled a little at that truth There was a moment’s silence before Lana spoke again. ’Okay, but about the whole professors reporting to her thing—what are you going to do about that? You can’t let this keep happening. ’Ryan sighed. 'I don't know. I was thinking about talking to my professors and asking them not to give her updates, but let's be real—if my mom wants information, she'll find a way to get it. 'Lana nodded. 'Of course, she probably has half the faculty in her pocket. 'there is a walsh auditorium for a reasonRyan rubbed his temples. Ugh, don’t even get me started on that. At this point I’d have to assume she paid someone to keep track of my attendance.Lana smiled. 'Anytime you feel the urge to disappear, just give me a call. I'll help you stage a dramatic getaway. 'you know I have your back Ryan chuckled despite himself. "Oh yeah? What’s the plan?"Lana rubbed
Chapter 40Sophia couldn’t wait to share the news with her roommates. Her heart was still racing a little from the excitement of the interview, and the thought of actually getting the job gave her a sense of accomplishment. She quickly pulled out her phone, unlocked it, and opened their group chat."Hey guys, I might be resuming work here anytime soon," she typed, her fingers moving over the keys for a moment before hitting send. The little dot indicating that the message had been delivered made her stomach have a sensation Mia was the first to reply, sending a string of celebratory emojis. "Congratulations, girl! It was never in doubt," she wrote, and Sophia couldn’t help but grin at the message. Mia always knew how to make her feel good about herself. Sophia stared at her phone, waiting for Olivia’s response, but there was no reply yet. It seemed Olivia wasn’t online at the moment. She let out a sigh of relief, feeling like she had something to talk about when Olivia did finally
Chapter 39Sophia exhaled sharply, massaging her wrist as she stepped back. A part of her felt triumphant—seeing Katrina riled up was satisfying. But she didn’t have time for all this She needed to get to Pappies on time, and dealing with Katrina wasn’t on her to-do list. Pulling out her phone, she checked the time. She hadn’t made an official appointment, which she now wondered if she should have, but there was no going back. She had to at least show up and try. As she made her way toward Pappies, the cool afternoon breeze brushed against her skin. It was a short walk from her lecture hall, but it felt unfamiliar. This was the first time she had come to this side of the school, and she took in her surroundings as she walked. The atmosphere was quieter here, with fewer students loitering around. Most of them seemed busy, either in hushed conversations or heading toward different buildings. Sophia adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and quickened her pace. She didn’t wa
Chapter 38As the lecturer stepped into the classroom, Sophia immediately noticed that he was different from the one they had the day before. This man looked to be in his early 40s—perhaps even younger. He carried himself with an air of confidence, his neatly pressed suit giving him a polished yet approachable appearance. Sophia was a little taken aback. She had expected someone much older in this field, considering the depth of knowledge required for public health. But then again, times were changing, and younger professionals were making their mark in academia. The lecturer walked to the center of the class, set down his materials, and offered a friendly smile. “Good morning, everyone,” he greeted. “Good morning, sir,” the class responded in unison. “My name is Dr. Reynolds, and I’ll be taking you through Public Health this semester. I expect all of you to be engaged because this course isn’t just about theories—it’s about real-world applications. Public health affects eve
