Chapter 4
"What more do you want from me, Ryan? You and Lana already conspired to take everything from me," Sophia said as she dropped the bag to the floor in a fit of rage. "You made your decision already. You want me out, and I'll leave."
"But Sophia, I don't want to leave you like this. Not like I care anyway, but you have nothing. I want you out of my life, but that doesn't mean I will be heartless about it," Ryan said to her.
Lana stood closely behind, wondering why Ryan was suddenly indecisive about letting her go. Some part of her couldn't help but think Ryan still had a soft spot for Sophia, even despite all her efforts.
She walked forward toward the arguing couple and decided to chime in, faking affection as usual.
"I know things have gone bad, Sophia, but listen to Ryan. He is only looking out for you," Lana said to her.
"Oh, don't you dare, Lana! Don't you start with the fake emotional nonsense, acting like you care!" Sophia snapped at Lana in a fit of rage. "You have gotten what you want! Congratulations, you won!"
"Do not raise your voice at Lana," Ryan said to Sophia. "You keep on looking for someone to blame for everything. All that has happened is on you. How is it Lana's fault you chose to be unfaithful or carry a baby that is not mine in that belly of yours? You are lucky I'm still considering pitying you by offering you a place to stay here, and it's all because I am remembering the fact that we have been together for a long time."
Sophia took a deep breath before speaking up. She hadn’t wanted to return here but had important things to pick up from this place. She had pleaded with Landon, who had yet to introduce himself properly or had time to speak on what was going on, to allow her to get her things. She was looking toward the next step in her life but felt it important to take care of her past.
She had hoped Ryan would not be home, but here he was, trying to guilt-trip her into staying. It was not going to work this time around. She decided to say a few words to both of them.
"Ryan!" she began. "You know I love you. I have loved you all these years without a doubt. I care deeply about you. I have been faithful in our marriage. Now, I don't know what is going on. There are hands behind this, trying to tear us apart, but congratulations to them, as they have succeeded."
Sophia said this and cast a look at Lana, who immediately looked down at her feet, averting Sophia's gaze.
"…And it's because you have allowed them to! Everything I have told you tonight is nothing but the truth. I never slept with any man besides you. The baby I carried in my belly, that you both murdered, is yours! You both didn’t even have the decency to let the ashes rest. I even—"
"Enough of this nonsense!" Ryan shouted, interrupting her. "I won’t sit here and allow you to run your mouth, accusing us of such nonsense!"
"Oh, but I should be the one to sit back and be accused, right?" A little tear dropped from Sophia's eye as she said this. "What am I even doing here? I have had enough of this—enough of the both of you tormenting me. I said what I said, and I am not going to repeat myself. I hope the both of you are happy together."
Sophia grabbed her bags and turned away from them. This time, Ryan fell awkwardly silent, and she was glad he did. She didn't want anything stopping her. She stepped out the doors, carrying the weight of countless memories from that house—both good and bad. After all these years, she was finally going to leave it for good.
She turned back briefly and saw Ryan standing at the door, watching her leave, with Lana propped up beside him. She hated Lana so much in that moment and wondered how low she could go just to hurt her.
Dragging her bags toward the black car parked right up front, Sophia’s only consolation was Landon—the man who claimed to be her brother—telling her she was a person she never thought she was. Sophia was hell-bent on finding out more about herself tonight.
The driver, fully adorned in a tailored suit, stepped out of the vehicle and helped her with her bag, placing it in the boot of the car.
"This really isn't necessary," she said to the chauffeur. "I can handle this myself."
"No, ma'am, I have specific orders to help you out with everything. Just relax a bit. I am just doing my job."
She obliged and let him carry the bag for her. She watched as he placed it in the boot, then opened the car door and ushered her in.
Ryan was still standing there, watching, wondering what vehicle Sophia had just entered.
"Have you seen that car before?" he asked Lana, who was still standing beside him.
"It's probably the car of the person she has been sleeping around with," Lana replied, seizing the opportunity to push her agenda further. "I told you she was good for nothing—leaves you this minute and doesn't waste a second running into her lover's arms
…. "Enough of this, Lana," Ryan snapped at her. He wasn't having it. "I am sure it's just a rideshare or something. Let us go back inside."
He opened the door, and they walked back in together.
Sophia sat in the back seat of the car, looking through the window, reminiscing about how dramatic the night had been. Tears dropped from her eyes as she thought about her baby, what Ryan had put her through, and how heartless he seemed about it. He was someone she had loved dearly, right from their university days when she was still chasing a degree. Her mind raced back to those days.
Sophia was only 18 years old when she was admitted into the University of Lerudia. She knew how hard she had worked to get in. She didn’t have much growing up, living in a small part of the slums of the city along with her granny and her cousin. She had vowed to herself to work hard and leave such a life behind. She never knew her parents—her grandmother had taken care of her all her life.
It wasn’t the best life, but she was comfortable with it. One day, her cousin came in with an envelope in hand. Sophia was busy tending to her granny, as things had been difficult for her ever since her grandmother got sick.
"Hey, Sofie, I found this in the mailbox," her cousin Justine called out as she walked into the apartment. "I think it’s for you—says something about a university."
Sophia immediately dropped what she was doing and jumped to her feet, dragging the envelope from Justine with both hands.
"Hey there, easy! I could tell it was important, but you don’t have to be so jumpy about it," Justine said with a smile.
"I’m sorry, just excited to see the contents," Sophia said as she smiled back.
"Hey, Granny," Justine said as she knelt down to greet their grandmother.
Unlike Sophia, Justine knew her parents. They were alive and well, but she had moved out of their house when she was 12. She felt they were too controlling and that she needed her space. She and Sophia had lived together ever since and had grown close to each other.
"So, what does it say?" Justine asked as she cast a look at Sophia. "Come on, rip it open and tell me!"
Sophia took a deep breath. "Do not rush me, please," she snapped at Justine.
"Alright then," Justine said, raising her hands in retreat.
Sophia ripped open the envelope and pulled out its contents. For a moment, she stared at the letter in silence. Then, a huge smile spread across her face.
"Oh, I know that smile!" Justine said as she jumped to her feet and hugged Sophia, lifting her slightly off the ground. "You got in, right?" she yelled out in delight.
"Put me down, Justine!" Sophia giggled as she said this.
Justine set her down, and Sophia took a minute to catch her breath before beginning to read the contents of the letter aloud.
“Dear Sophia Sullivan,
We at the University of Lerudia are offering you a position at our institute to study the course of your choice. It is going to be a fully funded scholarship with all expenses covered by us at the institute.
We will be expecting you to attend a meeting with the Vice Chancellor of this great institute tomorrow so we can fully assess you, and you will be selecting the course of your choice. Please do well to be prompt—we will be expecting you, Sophia.
Signed,
Secretary,
Helena Cartz”
"That's it! I'm in, and it's a fully paid scholarship! I can't believe this!" Sophia yelled out in delight before going to squat beside her grandmother. "You hear that, Granny? I got into a prestigious school! Everything is covered and paid for. I'm going to get us a better life."
Her grandmother nodded faintly. She had been battling a long case of dementia, which had started two years ago after she fell down the staircase. Since then, the burden of caring for her had fallen to Justine and Sophia. They couldn’t afford to take her into a care home.
"Things are going to get better from here, Granny," Sophia continued. "I’ll try my best to get a good degree, land a good job, and then take care of you."
Sophia watched as tears began to fall from her grandmother's eyes. She couldn’t hold back her own tears either. This was the woman who had been there for them all their lives. Without thinking, Sophia leaned in and hugged her grandmother tightly.
Justine stood nearby, trying her best not to get emotional. She always claimed to have a stronger mind than both of them.
"Now, the both of you shouldn’t get emotional on me," Justine said, though she was fighting back tears herself. "Come on, it’s enough. Why are you crying when we should clearly be celebrating? Enough of this!"
Justine bent down and wiped the tears from Sophia's face before planting a kiss on their grandmother’s forehead.
"You’re right, Justine," Sophia said, sniffing back her tears. "We shouldn’t be crying. I’m sorry—I just got emotional in the moment."
"Well, speaking of celebrating," Justine said with a grin, "it’s a good thing I got just the ingredients to cook your favorite! I got carried away with all this—mails, fancy schools, and crying."
She stepped outside and came back in with her hand filled with groceries, ready to celebrate the good news.
"Oh my God," Sophia exclaimed. "I want to be excited over this, but I have a lot of questions. First, where did you get the money to buy all of this? Don’t tell me you worked for it, because there’s no way you can make all this money in a day."
Sophia walked over to the bag. "You even got Irish potatoes and a French wine? This definitely cost an arm and a leg. Please don’t tell me you stole this, Justine."
"Hey! That is very offensive," Justine snapped, seeming slightly offended by the accusation.
"I’m sorry," Sophia said with a laugh. She knew it was a common practice between them to joke around like this.
"You know, cousin, I’m a lot of things, but I am definitely not a thief," Justine said, stretching out her hand and pinching Sophia slightly.
"Ouch! That hurt a little. Well then, tell me where you got them so I won’t accuse you," Sophia responded.
"It’s kind of a long story. You know what? Why don’t you join me in the kitchen, and I’ll tell you all about it as we prepare the food? I definitely need a little food to talk, and I wouldn’t want to discuss this in front of the old lady," Justine whispered, pointing at their grandmother. She definitely won't like what she hears.
“Fair enough then”, Sophia said as she picked up the groceries and followed her cou
sin closely behind. “start talking, I want to hear all of it “.sophia said to her
Chapter 5"From the way this is quite much, I am sure the story behind it must be equally as much also, so begin talking, my sweet cousin," Sophia said immediately as they stepped away from their grandmother into the kitchen. It wasn't much, aside from it being a tardy compartment; it was just a separate room as cooking had to be done somewhere else to avoid any sort of fire outbreak. Still, they managed to make it work, just like they managed to do with everything. The kitchen had two gas stoves and some pots. It was all they needed, and they were satisfied with it."So come on now, cousin, start talking," Sophia pressed Justine further."Why are you in such a hurry to let me tell you everything? At least let us light up the stove first and begin cooking," Justine said to her, being hesitant.Sophia hurriedly grabbed the lighter, set the stove along with a pot and water, then turned to her cousin. "Now spill the beans.""Alright, tiger, you might want to slow down and reserve the ene
Chapter 6 "What's with all the yelling?" Justine said as she stretched from her bed and walked toward the bathroom. Her cousin came out of it, visibly upset. "There's no water, Justine! I can't believe this. My whole day is ruined. I knew I was going to mess it up. It sounded too good to be true anyway." Tears began to drop from Sophia's eyes. "Hey, stop this nonsense," her cousin snapped at her. "It's just water, not the end of the world." Sophia sniffled. "But how can I—" "I have a little trick," Justine interrupted, holding up a bottle of lotion and body wash. "Take this lotion and wash, apply it around your body like you're bathing. It’ll leave you smelling like flowers. You really need to learn to improvise for times like this, my dear Sophia. Now hurry up and do this; we don’t have all day!" Sophia reluctantly grabbed the lotion and wash from her cousin and walked back into the bathroom. Pouring the mixture into her hands, she began rubbing it around her body as fast
Chapter 7"Come on in!" a voice said softly from within.Sophia opened the door and stepped in. She found a pretty-looking lady whose face seemed to light up immediately upon seeing her sitting across the room. The lady looked like someone in her early forties. She had blonde hair styled into a bob and was wearing medicated glasses.Sophia guessed it had something to do with age.The table in front of the woman was covered with piles of files and books. Being a professor in this institution came with a lot of work."Good morning, Professor," Sophia greeted softly as she entered. "My name is—""Your name is Sophia Sullivan. Yes, I know. I am the one who invited you over, and I have also been expecting you," the woman interrupted Sophia without looking up from the pile of books on her table."I am sorry I kept you waiting, ma'am. I had—""It's okay, dear," the professor finally lifted her head from the table to face Sophia, interrupting her once more. "Come on, dear, have a seat."The w
Chapter 8"I got in!" Sophia yelled out to Justine immediately after she left the office. Her cousin was sitting down, waiting for her to come out."Well, don't you think I'm surprised you got in? I knew us coming here was just a matter of formality. Congratulations, cousin! I'm proud of you. If there's anyone who deserves this in the world, it's you. You will do just well in this environment." "You know this would not have been possible without all the help you put in, both physically and financially. Thank you a lot, cousin.""Please do not do that to me. Now, let's get out of here. Being around all these fancy rich folks for too long pricks my skin.""Well, you better get used to it. You are going to be visiting me here very often.""Don't count on it," Justine said as she laughed. They both walked towards the gate, back the way they came in."Ryan! Ryan! Will you get out of bed? It's afternoon, for crying out loud! How much did you have to drink last night?"Twenty-year-old Ryan
Chapter 9 She didn’t see the need to push this further; she just wanted both of them out of her office.Reaching into her drawer, she pulled out a form and handed it over to Ryan without saying a word."Umm, sorry, what am I supposed to do with this?" Ryan asked, seemingly confused. The professor, in her head, was about to cook up the nastiest response to such a dumb question from Ryan."Well, you can read, can't you?" Eleanor interrupted, saving Helena from her misery. "It clearly states there that you should indicate the course you are willing to study.""Oh!" Ryan exclaimed as he looked down at the form handed to him and began filling it out, slightly embarrassed that he looked illiterate in front of these two women."You do know what you intend on studying, don’t you?" the professor added, further embarrassing Ryan."Yes, I do," he blurted out. "I intend on studying something related to business, just like my father, so I will be able to take over his business someday."The pr
Chapter 10*"La Coune Restaurant and Bar. Pick you up at 8. Send me an address. Can’t wait to see you."* She blushed and handed the phone over to Sophia. "That is so sweet!" "You are putting on the red dress, no questions asked. Now get on your feet, let’s get you all dressed up." She fixed some of the buttons on the dress. It was one Justine had taken from her parents’ place, and it had belonged to her mother. Justine looked somewhat downcast. It had been years since she and her parents fought, and they had not spoken since. Sophia noticed this but didn’t say anything. She knew Justine didn’t like to talk about her parents. Instead, she went in for a hug. Justine put on the dress and checked herself out in the mirror. It suited her body perfectly, and she looked lovely in it. "Thank you so much, cousin. I love this." "You’re welcome. Now please order the pizza because I am starving," Sophia pressed. "I got you." Justine whipped out her phone and ordered pizza.
Chapter 11It was already nighttime at the Walsh residence. Ryan had just finished getting a second round of scolding from his mother, who was complaining about his attitude toward school and how he lacked ambition to be successful like his father. On nights like this—especially when his dad wasn’t around—the nagging would go on and on. His father usually intervened, not because he cared, but because he was always tired of the yelling."Let the boy be. His life is in his hands. If he wants to ruin it, let him. We already spoiled him." Those would be his father’s words. That was why Ryan saw it as a good thing when his mother told him to go up and pack his bags. Maybe going away to this school would be good for him after all. He would finally get his freedom from his parents, and there would be no one to supervise his movements there. Plus, he was sure some of his friends would be heading to that same school. Being a school for the wealthy, it was almost guaranteed. He had already got
Chapter 12 Ryan walked to the table , the drinks were all lined up, first to finish their 5 bottles win He and Zach stood at the table , waiting for the signal for them to beginThe club was alive with wild energy—flashing neon lights, deafening music, and the steady hum of voices blending with the bass. Ryan could feel the heat of the moment pressing against his skin as he stood face to face with Zach, his so-called friend who had just challenged his manhood in front of everyone. “Ryan, are you sure about this? You know how your mum is going to react to this. Don’t let him get to you,” Lana whispered urgently, gripping his wrist. Ryan exhaled, shaking off her concern. “It’s fine. There’s nothing I can’t handle. He wants a challenge? Then he has a challenge on his hands. Normally, I’d back down, but not in front of Taylor.” His eyes flickered toward his ex, who was watching with amusement. His ego wouldn’t let him walk away. “Just promise me you’ll drive me home if things go
Chapter 46Lana had just turned the corner when she saw a stranger leave her dorm room. A guy she had never seen before. Tall, dark hair, a confident stride—definitely not someone from their usual circle. She watched as he casually walked down the hall, disappearing around the corner. Her lips curled slightly, both in amusement and irritation. So this was the guy Ryan saw Jessie with. The reason Ryan had spent half the night crashing out Lana wanted to say something to Jessie about it, but then again, what was the point? She wasn’t going to stir up unnecessary drama. If Jessie wanted to sneak around with someone else while Ryan was busy convincing himself she was the love of his life, that was her business. Maybe now, at least, Ryan would finally stop obsessing over her.She shook her head and pushed open the door to the dorm.Jessie was sitting cross-legged on her bed, scrolling through her phone, but she looked up the moment Lana walked in. Her face lit up as she saw her “Hey, Lan
Chapter 45 It was quite late into the night, almost past 11, when Olivia finally returned from her date. She quietly pushed open the door to their dorm, careful not to wake Mia, who was already fast asleep. The lights in the room were turned off save for the bedside lamp, which was left on by Sophia, who was still up, scrolling through her phone.Sophia looked up as Olivia tiptoed in, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "Well, well, look who finally decided to show up," she teased, sitting up and patting the bed beside her. "So, are you going to spill, or am I going to have to drag it out of you?"Olivia grinned as she kicked off her heels, stretching her tired feet. "Oh my God, Sophia, it was amazing!" she whispered excitedly, settling onto the bed. "I don’t even know where to start.""How about from the beginning?" Sophia said, raising an eyebrow. "Glad it was that nice. Like, what even took you so long? I was beginning to think Jake kidnapped you or something."Olivia laughed
Chapter 44The walk to Jessie’s dorm was quiet, aside from Ryan mumbling to himself as he rehearsed his apology."Hey, Jessie, I was a jerk yesterday… no, that sounds too formal… Jessie, I messed up, but I really like you… ugh, too desperate."Lana shook her head, she was scrolling through her phone watching him stress over every word. "Dude, relax. Just be yourself.""Yeah, easy for you to say. You're not the one about to put your heart on the line."She smirked. "Nope and I don't think I ever will be , which is why I am here getting hurt over all this , she said to herself But I am the one who told you this was a bad idea."They reached the dorm building, and Ryan took a deep breath. "Okay. Let’s do this."Lana stood back, arms crossed. "Good luck, lover boy."Ryan shot her a glare before heading inside. As he walked down the hall, Ryan could feel his heart pounding in his chest. This was it. He’d knock, she’d answer, he’d give her the chocolates and note, they’d talk, and maybe—ju
Chapter 43Ryan figured he needed to speak to Jessie. He hadn't seen or spoken to her all day—actually, not since last night’s incident. He felt like he owed her an apology, at least for how things had transpired. Leaving her mid-conversation to answer his mom’s call had been careless. He could have handled it better. Now, as he sat at the café with Lana, he found himself distracted, tapping his fingers against the table while Lana was completely busy with taking pictures of their food. He sighed. Somehow, she had convinced him to buy lunch for both of them, and now she was treating their meal like a personal photoshoot. "Are you planning to eat that or frame it?" Ryan asked, raising an eyebrow as she adjusted the angle of her phone. Lana smirked but didn’t look up. "Food this pretty deserves appreciation." She snapped another picture. "Besides, you paid, so I get to enjoy it however I want."thanks for buying by the way , you owed me after all Ryan rolled his eyes, but his mind
Chapter 42Olivia and Mia soon arrived at the dorm room, as they burst through the door. Without a word, they both rushed to Sophia and wrapped her in a tight hug.“Whoa! What’s this for?” Sophia laughed, caught off guard but secretly enjoying the warmth of their embrace.“Can’t we just hug you?” Mia teased, pulling back slightly.“Yeah, maybe we missed you,” Olivia added with a wink.Sophia narrowed her eyes playfully. “you girls can't be serious. I saw you guys this morning.” And how come you guys always seem to come in together? “Still,” Mia said, flopping onto Sophia’s bed dramatically. “A lot can happen in a few hours, plus you got the job .” and blame Olivia for that ,she is always looking for how to follow meSophia shook her head, grinning. “You two are so weird.”“We know,” Olivia said proudly. “Now, about my date—”“Ah, yes! What time does it start?” Sophia asked, straightening up. “Let’s get you all dressed up.”Olivia glanced at her phone. “In about two hours, but I ne
Chapter 41Ryan let out a dry chuckle. Yeah, well, welcome to my life. And you've always been there Lana smiled a little at that truth There was a moment’s silence before Lana spoke again. ’Okay, but about the whole professors reporting to her thing—what are you going to do about that? You can’t let this keep happening. ’Ryan sighed. 'I don't know. I was thinking about talking to my professors and asking them not to give her updates, but let's be real—if my mom wants information, she'll find a way to get it. 'Lana nodded. 'Of course, she probably has half the faculty in her pocket. 'there is a walsh auditorium for a reasonRyan rubbed his temples. Ugh, don’t even get me started on that. At this point I’d have to assume she paid someone to keep track of my attendance.Lana smiled. 'Anytime you feel the urge to disappear, just give me a call. I'll help you stage a dramatic getaway. 'you know I have your back Ryan chuckled despite himself. "Oh yeah? What’s the plan?"Lana rubbed
Chapter 40Sophia couldn’t wait to share the news with her roommates. Her heart was still racing a little from the excitement of the interview, and the thought of actually getting the job gave her a sense of accomplishment. She quickly pulled out her phone, unlocked it, and opened their group chat."Hey guys, I might be resuming work here anytime soon," she typed, her fingers moving over the keys for a moment before hitting send. The little dot indicating that the message had been delivered made her stomach have a sensation Mia was the first to reply, sending a string of celebratory emojis. "Congratulations, girl! It was never in doubt," she wrote, and Sophia couldn’t help but grin at the message. Mia always knew how to make her feel good about herself. Sophia stared at her phone, waiting for Olivia’s response, but there was no reply yet. It seemed Olivia wasn’t online at the moment. She let out a sigh of relief, feeling like she had something to talk about when Olivia did finally
Chapter 39Sophia exhaled sharply, massaging her wrist as she stepped back. A part of her felt triumphant—seeing Katrina riled up was satisfying. But she didn’t have time for all this She needed to get to Pappies on time, and dealing with Katrina wasn’t on her to-do list. Pulling out her phone, she checked the time. She hadn’t made an official appointment, which she now wondered if she should have, but there was no going back. She had to at least show up and try. As she made her way toward Pappies, the cool afternoon breeze brushed against her skin. It was a short walk from her lecture hall, but it felt unfamiliar. This was the first time she had come to this side of the school, and she took in her surroundings as she walked. The atmosphere was quieter here, with fewer students loitering around. Most of them seemed busy, either in hushed conversations or heading toward different buildings. Sophia adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and quickened her pace. She didn’t wa
Chapter 38As the lecturer stepped into the classroom, Sophia immediately noticed that he was different from the one they had the day before. This man looked to be in his early 40s—perhaps even younger. He carried himself with an air of confidence, his neatly pressed suit giving him a polished yet approachable appearance. Sophia was a little taken aback. She had expected someone much older in this field, considering the depth of knowledge required for public health. But then again, times were changing, and younger professionals were making their mark in academia. The lecturer walked to the center of the class, set down his materials, and offered a friendly smile. “Good morning, everyone,” he greeted. “Good morning, sir,” the class responded in unison. “My name is Dr. Reynolds, and I’ll be taking you through Public Health this semester. I expect all of you to be engaged because this course isn’t just about theories—it’s about real-world applications. Public health affects eve
