Chapter 7
"Come on in!" a voice said softly from within.
Sophia opened the door and stepped in. She found a pretty-looking lady whose face seemed to light up immediately upon seeing her sitting across the room. The lady looked like someone in her early forties. She had blonde hair styled into a bob and was wearing medicated glasses.
Sophia guessed it had something to do with age.
The table in front of the woman was covered with piles of files and books. Being a professor in this institution came with a lot of work.
"Good morning, Professor," Sophia greeted softly as she entered. "My name is—"
"Your name is Sophia Sullivan. Yes, I know. I am the one who invited you over, and I have also been expecting you," the woman interrupted Sophia without looking up from the pile of books on her table.
"I am sorry I kept you waiting, ma'am. I had—"
"It's okay, dear," the professor finally lifted her head from the table to face Sophia, interrupting her once more. "Come on, dear, have a seat."
The woman motioned to the chair right in front of her.
Sophia did as told and eased herself gently into the chair.
"Thank you, ma’am," Sophia said immediately after she was seated.
"Would you like to have a cup of coffee?" Professor Helena offered.
By instinct, Sophia wanted to say yes, but she had no choice but to politely decline the offer.
"No, thank you, Professor. I am okay. In fact, I had a heavy cup of coffee before coming in here," Sophia lied.
"Fair enough then," the woman said to her. "I like you. It seems you like to get straight down to business. Let's get to it then."
Sophia smiled, happy that this was already going smoothly and that the woman interviewing her seemed to be nice.
"So, Miss Sophia, I am pretty sure you know why you are here. Or don't you?" The woman smiled in a petty way.
Sophia smiled at her again, then began speaking.
"I was asked to come here for an interview with the professor. I was told I was being offered a scholarship."
"Well, you did apply, Miss Sophia, but you weren’t just offered—you were chosen. I chose you," the professor said. "Your SATs and all your results were quite impressive. I couldn't risk not having one of the best brains in the country. But I do have a question for you, though."
The woman paused dramatically, and Sophia felt her heart sink slightly.
Then the woman said, "Why this university?"
It was an open question thrown at Sophia.
Sophia took a deep breath. This was one of the trick questions she had read about online, and just as she had practiced on the bus here, she began speaking.
“Why the University of Lerudia? There are many reasons why I chose this institution above all others, but let me begin with its history. The University of Lerudia, as I’m sure you know, has a remarkable legacy. Founded in 1895, it began as a small institution focused on liberal arts and philosophy, aiming to foster critical thinking and societal progress. Over the decades, it evolved into one of the most prestigious universities in the region, expanding its curriculum to include sciences, engineering, medicine, and even the arts. What stands out to me is how it has stayed true to its original mission of nurturing intellectual growth while constantly adapting to modern demands. The university has not just grown in size but also in reputation, becoming a beacon of academic excellence and innovation."
Sophia paused for a moment, looking at the woman’s expression. The slight nod of approval gave her the encouragement to continue.
"Another aspect that attracted me to Lerudia is its academic prowess. This university is not just known for its history but for consistently producing top-tier graduates who go on to become leaders in their respective fields. Lerudia has ranked among the top universities nationally for its rigorous academic programs and research contributions. For example, the School of Engineering has been recognized for its groundbreaking work in renewable energy, with faculty and students collaborating on projects that have global implications. Meanwhile, the School of Medicine has one of the highest residency placement rates in the country, and its research into genetic diseases has led to life-changing discoveries. These achievements reflect the quality of education here, and I know that being a part of this institution would push me to reach my fullest potential."
She leaned forward slightly, her voice becoming more passionate.
“The structure of the university is another thing that impressed me deeply. The campus itself is not just beautiful but also thoughtfully designed. The blend of historic architecture and state-of-the-art facilities symbolizes Lerudia’s respect for tradition while embracing innovation. I’ve read about the extensive library system, with over two million volumes and countless digital resources, making it one of the largest university libraries in the country. As someone who loves immersing herself in knowledge, I can’t imagine a better place to study.
Beyond the libraries, the laboratories and learning centers are among the best-equipped in the nation. The new Advanced Research Center, for instance, is something I’m particularly excited about. I’ve read how it fosters collaboration between students, professors, and even industry leaders, providing hands-on experience with real-world applications. These are the kinds of facilities that don’t just support learning but actively encourage innovation and creativity."
Sophia glanced at the woman, who now seemed fully engaged, and continued, “What also stands out to me about Lerudia is the faculty. The professors here are not just educators—they are pioneers and leaders in their respective fields. I did a lot of research about the faculty members in my chosen field, and I was amazed to see how many of them are published authors, renowned researchers, and award-winning professionals. For instance, Professor Eleanor Hart, who teaches Environmental Policy, has been an advisor to international climate change organizations and has authored books that I have read and admired. The opportunity to learn from someone like her, to engage in discussions and debates under her guidance, is invaluable.
Professor helens mouth was left agape, she was surprised at the extent to which she was speaking, like it was all placed in her head
Another example is Dr. Marcus Leclair from the Physics Department. His work on quantum mechanics is groundbreaking, and he has a reputation for being both an inspiring teacher and a dedicated mentor. The fact that the professors here are so accessible and involved in their students’ success is something I find extraordinary. It shows that Lerudia doesn’t just see its students as numbers but as individuals with potential. That’s the kind of environment I want to be a part of—one where I can build genuine relationships with my professors and peers, learn collaboratively, and grow intellectually."
Sophia took another calming breath, then concluded, "Finally, I chose the University of Lerudia because of its culture and values. It’s not just an institution—it’s a community. From what I’ve read, Lerudia prides itself on diversity and inclusivity. It welcomes students from all walks of life and fosters an environment where everyone feels valued and supported. The vibrant extracurricular programs, the student organizations, and the focus on community engagement all speak to the kind of holistic education Lerudia offers. This is a place where I know I’ll not only grow academically but also personally.
So, why the University of Lerudia? Because it represents everything I am looking for in a university. A rich history, unmatched academic excellence, world-class facilities, and a supportive community. I know that being here will challenge me, inspire me, and prepare me for a future where I can make meaningful contributions to society.”
Sophia sat back, her heart still racing, but she was proud of her answer. She had said everything she wanted to, and from the look on the woman’s face, she knew her words had made an impact.
"Well done! I could swear you read an article and put it into your head. I am marveled at the way you did this."
"You don't have to worry, Sophia. You are definitely in."
The woman reached for her drawer, pulled out a form, and handed it to her.
"Just fill it up and indicate the course of study you plan on pursuing."
Sophia grabbed the paper with both hands, thankful. She filled out the form, choosing to study Public Health because she always aimed to get a doctorate degree.
She thanked the woman once more as she handed the form back to her.
The professor nodded and sought to advise her a little.
"Now, you listen, young lady. You are about to start something new—a new life. You have unmatched potential. You have the brains to do anything. You are going to grow up to be an exceptional young lady. Do not let anyone dim your sparkle, ever. Welcome to the University of Lerudia. Resumption is tomorrow. All necessary details, like your dormitory and hall, will be communicated to you via email."
Sophia smiled as she accepted a warm handshake from the woman. It was one of the best days of her life—the beginning of a new chapter.
Now, as she sat back in the vehicle leaving Ryan's house, with her eyes soaked with tears, she couldn't help but wonder how it all went wrong. Maybe fall
ing in love was where all her troubles started.
Chapter 8"I got in!" Sophia yelled out to Justine immediately after she left the office. Her cousin was sitting down, waiting for her to come out."Well, don't you think I'm surprised you got in? I knew us coming here was just a matter of formality. Congratulations, cousin! I'm proud of you. If there's anyone who deserves this in the world, it's you. You will do just well in this environment." "You know this would not have been possible without all the help you put in, both physically and financially. Thank you a lot, cousin.""Please do not do that to me. Now, let's get out of here. Being around all these fancy rich folks for too long pricks my skin.""Well, you better get used to it. You are going to be visiting me here very often.""Don't count on it," Justine said as she laughed. They both walked towards the gate, back the way they came in."Ryan! Ryan! Will you get out of bed? It's afternoon, for crying out loud! How much did you have to drink last night?"Twenty-year-old Ryan
Chapter 9 She didn’t see the need to push this further; she just wanted both of them out of her office.Reaching into her drawer, she pulled out a form and handed it over to Ryan without saying a word."Umm, sorry, what am I supposed to do with this?" Ryan asked, seemingly confused. The professor, in her head, was about to cook up the nastiest response to such a dumb question from Ryan."Well, you can read, can't you?" Eleanor interrupted, saving Helena from her misery. "It clearly states there that you should indicate the course you are willing to study.""Oh!" Ryan exclaimed as he looked down at the form handed to him and began filling it out, slightly embarrassed that he looked illiterate in front of these two women."You do know what you intend on studying, don’t you?" the professor added, further embarrassing Ryan."Yes, I do," he blurted out. "I intend on studying something related to business, just like my father, so I will be able to take over his business someday."The pr
Chapter 10*"La Coune Restaurant and Bar. Pick you up at 8. Send me an address. Can’t wait to see you."* She blushed and handed the phone over to Sophia. "That is so sweet!" "You are putting on the red dress, no questions asked. Now get on your feet, let’s get you all dressed up." She fixed some of the buttons on the dress. It was one Justine had taken from her parents’ place, and it had belonged to her mother. Justine looked somewhat downcast. It had been years since she and her parents fought, and they had not spoken since. Sophia noticed this but didn’t say anything. She knew Justine didn’t like to talk about her parents. Instead, she went in for a hug. Justine put on the dress and checked herself out in the mirror. It suited her body perfectly, and she looked lovely in it. "Thank you so much, cousin. I love this." "You’re welcome. Now please order the pizza because I am starving," Sophia pressed. "I got you." Justine whipped out her phone and ordered pizza.
Chapter 11It was already nighttime at the Walsh residence. Ryan had just finished getting a second round of scolding from his mother, who was complaining about his attitude toward school and how he lacked ambition to be successful like his father. On nights like this—especially when his dad wasn’t around—the nagging would go on and on. His father usually intervened, not because he cared, but because he was always tired of the yelling."Let the boy be. His life is in his hands. If he wants to ruin it, let him. We already spoiled him." Those would be his father’s words. That was why Ryan saw it as a good thing when his mother told him to go up and pack his bags. Maybe going away to this school would be good for him after all. He would finally get his freedom from his parents, and there would be no one to supervise his movements there. Plus, he was sure some of his friends would be heading to that same school. Being a school for the wealthy, it was almost guaranteed. He had already got
Chapter 12 Ryan walked to the table , the drinks were all lined up, first to finish their 5 bottles win He and Zach stood at the table , waiting for the signal for them to beginThe club was alive with wild energy—flashing neon lights, deafening music, and the steady hum of voices blending with the bass. Ryan could feel the heat of the moment pressing against his skin as he stood face to face with Zach, his so-called friend who had just challenged his manhood in front of everyone. “Ryan, are you sure about this? You know how your mum is going to react to this. Don’t let him get to you,” Lana whispered urgently, gripping his wrist. Ryan exhaled, shaking off her concern. “It’s fine. There’s nothing I can’t handle. He wants a challenge? Then he has a challenge on his hands. Normally, I’d back down, but not in front of Taylor.” His eyes flickered toward his ex, who was watching with amusement. His ego wouldn’t let him walk away. “Just promise me you’ll drive me home if things go
Chapter 13"Why did you punch him? I mean, I know he deserves it, but you shouldn't have!" Lana said to Ryan as soon as they got to their home. The single punch from Ryan had knocked Zach out, and he was sent out by the security at the club. "I should have punched harder," Ryan muttered under his breath. "I think I need a drink, Lana. Do you have one somewhere?" "No, I don’t. Please stop this, Ryan. You’ve had enough drinks for today, and I can't help but feel guilty. Maybe I shouldn't have invited you to the party anyway. It was dumb. I guess I just wanted to see you," she admitted. "Nah, don't say that. I kind of needed it to clear my head from all this," Ryan replied."Ryan scoffed, rubbing his knuckles. "I should’ve punched him harder," he muttered under his breath, dropping onto the couch with a tired sigh. "That guy is a troublesome person. Always running his mouth like he owns the world." Lana sighed, kicking off her heels and sitting beside him. "Yeah, well, now he’s
Chapter 14*Get up, Ryan!” Lana’s voice rang out as she shook him. Ryan groaned in response, barely opening his eyes. His head pounded like a drum, a clear result of last night’s events. He had barely made it to bed before crashing, and now, waking up felt like torture. “Leave me alone,” he mumbled, pulling a pillow over his head. Lana rolled her eyes. “No way. You have to get up. Do you know what time it is?” “Too early,” Ryan muttered, refusing to move. Lana huffed. “**It’s already late , idiot!** We have to leave for campus today, remember you have even gotten your bags packed or something, your mum called me and I had to tell her you're staying here with me , luckily she took pity for your good deed and decided to have one of the maids pack it upBut Ryan was hardly listening to a word she said he was still feeling very groggy from sleep , He knew If he had gone home last night the current situation would have been worstRyan groaned louder this time. The events of last
Chapter 15Sophia slowly stepped into her new dorm room. She scanned around trying to take it in , this was going to take a while to get used to ,but the room looked very nice The room was cozy, with three beds neatly arranged. It had a sweet centre rug that looked like fur. At one corner of the room was something that looked like an office table. It looked very good to study while she looked back at the beds again. Two were already occupied, with suitcases and personal belongings scattered around them. The air smelled faintly of lavender, probably from one of the girls’ perfumes. Or it could be the air freshener but it did leave a sweet scent on her nose One of the beds was empty— it was most likely to behersAs she stepped in further, one of the girls, her room mate was already in ,a bubbly-looking brunette with long hair , lovely eyes and she seemed to be carrying a wide smile, turned to her. “Hey! Are you with us ? You must be our third occupant in this room then ,what your name
Chapter 46Lana had just turned the corner when she saw a stranger leave her dorm room. A guy she had never seen before. Tall, dark hair, a confident stride—definitely not someone from their usual circle. She watched as he casually walked down the hall, disappearing around the corner. Her lips curled slightly, both in amusement and irritation. So this was the guy Ryan saw Jessie with. The reason Ryan had spent half the night crashing out Lana wanted to say something to Jessie about it, but then again, what was the point? She wasn’t going to stir up unnecessary drama. If Jessie wanted to sneak around with someone else while Ryan was busy convincing himself she was the love of his life, that was her business. Maybe now, at least, Ryan would finally stop obsessing over her.She shook her head and pushed open the door to the dorm.Jessie was sitting cross-legged on her bed, scrolling through her phone, but she looked up the moment Lana walked in. Her face lit up as she saw her “Hey, Lan
Chapter 45 It was quite late into the night, almost past 11, when Olivia finally returned from her date. She quietly pushed open the door to their dorm, careful not to wake Mia, who was already fast asleep. The lights in the room were turned off save for the bedside lamp, which was left on by Sophia, who was still up, scrolling through her phone.Sophia looked up as Olivia tiptoed in, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "Well, well, look who finally decided to show up," she teased, sitting up and patting the bed beside her. "So, are you going to spill, or am I going to have to drag it out of you?"Olivia grinned as she kicked off her heels, stretching her tired feet. "Oh my God, Sophia, it was amazing!" she whispered excitedly, settling onto the bed. "I don’t even know where to start.""How about from the beginning?" Sophia said, raising an eyebrow. "Glad it was that nice. Like, what even took you so long? I was beginning to think Jake kidnapped you or something."Olivia laughed
Chapter 44The walk to Jessie’s dorm was quiet, aside from Ryan mumbling to himself as he rehearsed his apology."Hey, Jessie, I was a jerk yesterday… no, that sounds too formal… Jessie, I messed up, but I really like you… ugh, too desperate."Lana shook her head, she was scrolling through her phone watching him stress over every word. "Dude, relax. Just be yourself.""Yeah, easy for you to say. You're not the one about to put your heart on the line."She smirked. "Nope and I don't think I ever will be , which is why I am here getting hurt over all this , she said to herself But I am the one who told you this was a bad idea."They reached the dorm building, and Ryan took a deep breath. "Okay. Let’s do this."Lana stood back, arms crossed. "Good luck, lover boy."Ryan shot her a glare before heading inside. As he walked down the hall, Ryan could feel his heart pounding in his chest. This was it. He’d knock, she’d answer, he’d give her the chocolates and note, they’d talk, and maybe—ju
Chapter 43Ryan figured he needed to speak to Jessie. He hadn't seen or spoken to her all day—actually, not since last night’s incident. He felt like he owed her an apology, at least for how things had transpired. Leaving her mid-conversation to answer his mom’s call had been careless. He could have handled it better. Now, as he sat at the café with Lana, he found himself distracted, tapping his fingers against the table while Lana was completely busy with taking pictures of their food. He sighed. Somehow, she had convinced him to buy lunch for both of them, and now she was treating their meal like a personal photoshoot. "Are you planning to eat that or frame it?" Ryan asked, raising an eyebrow as she adjusted the angle of her phone. Lana smirked but didn’t look up. "Food this pretty deserves appreciation." She snapped another picture. "Besides, you paid, so I get to enjoy it however I want."thanks for buying by the way , you owed me after all Ryan rolled his eyes, but his mind
Chapter 42Olivia and Mia soon arrived at the dorm room, as they burst through the door. Without a word, they both rushed to Sophia and wrapped her in a tight hug.“Whoa! What’s this for?” Sophia laughed, caught off guard but secretly enjoying the warmth of their embrace.“Can’t we just hug you?” Mia teased, pulling back slightly.“Yeah, maybe we missed you,” Olivia added with a wink.Sophia narrowed her eyes playfully. “you girls can't be serious. I saw you guys this morning.” And how come you guys always seem to come in together? “Still,” Mia said, flopping onto Sophia’s bed dramatically. “A lot can happen in a few hours, plus you got the job .” and blame Olivia for that ,she is always looking for how to follow meSophia shook her head, grinning. “You two are so weird.”“We know,” Olivia said proudly. “Now, about my date—”“Ah, yes! What time does it start?” Sophia asked, straightening up. “Let’s get you all dressed up.”Olivia glanced at her phone. “In about two hours, but I ne
Chapter 41Ryan let out a dry chuckle. Yeah, well, welcome to my life. And you've always been there Lana smiled a little at that truth There was a moment’s silence before Lana spoke again. ’Okay, but about the whole professors reporting to her thing—what are you going to do about that? You can’t let this keep happening. ’Ryan sighed. 'I don't know. I was thinking about talking to my professors and asking them not to give her updates, but let's be real—if my mom wants information, she'll find a way to get it. 'Lana nodded. 'Of course, she probably has half the faculty in her pocket. 'there is a walsh auditorium for a reasonRyan rubbed his temples. Ugh, don’t even get me started on that. At this point I’d have to assume she paid someone to keep track of my attendance.Lana smiled. 'Anytime you feel the urge to disappear, just give me a call. I'll help you stage a dramatic getaway. 'you know I have your back Ryan chuckled despite himself. "Oh yeah? What’s the plan?"Lana rubbed
Chapter 40Sophia couldn’t wait to share the news with her roommates. Her heart was still racing a little from the excitement of the interview, and the thought of actually getting the job gave her a sense of accomplishment. She quickly pulled out her phone, unlocked it, and opened their group chat."Hey guys, I might be resuming work here anytime soon," she typed, her fingers moving over the keys for a moment before hitting send. The little dot indicating that the message had been delivered made her stomach have a sensation Mia was the first to reply, sending a string of celebratory emojis. "Congratulations, girl! It was never in doubt," she wrote, and Sophia couldn’t help but grin at the message. Mia always knew how to make her feel good about herself. Sophia stared at her phone, waiting for Olivia’s response, but there was no reply yet. It seemed Olivia wasn’t online at the moment. She let out a sigh of relief, feeling like she had something to talk about when Olivia did finally
Chapter 39Sophia exhaled sharply, massaging her wrist as she stepped back. A part of her felt triumphant—seeing Katrina riled up was satisfying. But she didn’t have time for all this She needed to get to Pappies on time, and dealing with Katrina wasn’t on her to-do list. Pulling out her phone, she checked the time. She hadn’t made an official appointment, which she now wondered if she should have, but there was no going back. She had to at least show up and try. As she made her way toward Pappies, the cool afternoon breeze brushed against her skin. It was a short walk from her lecture hall, but it felt unfamiliar. This was the first time she had come to this side of the school, and she took in her surroundings as she walked. The atmosphere was quieter here, with fewer students loitering around. Most of them seemed busy, either in hushed conversations or heading toward different buildings. Sophia adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and quickened her pace. She didn’t wa
Chapter 38As the lecturer stepped into the classroom, Sophia immediately noticed that he was different from the one they had the day before. This man looked to be in his early 40s—perhaps even younger. He carried himself with an air of confidence, his neatly pressed suit giving him a polished yet approachable appearance. Sophia was a little taken aback. She had expected someone much older in this field, considering the depth of knowledge required for public health. But then again, times were changing, and younger professionals were making their mark in academia. The lecturer walked to the center of the class, set down his materials, and offered a friendly smile. “Good morning, everyone,” he greeted. “Good morning, sir,” the class responded in unison. “My name is Dr. Reynolds, and I’ll be taking you through Public Health this semester. I expect all of you to be engaged because this course isn’t just about theories—it’s about real-world applications. Public health affects eve
