Betrayal

Chapter One

Elodie’s P.O.V

A scream tore from my lips piercing through the graveyard, tears cascading down my cheeks as I sank to my knees, clutching the dead rose. Raindrops began to fall, mingling with the tears while soaking my clothes that clung to my skin perfectly.

Lightning flashed intermittently, casting brief, stark shadows and my lips wobbled, muttering. “Zack…..my son”

It has been two years since I lost my first child and still, I never moved on from his death. In a marriage that was filled with nothing but turmoil and ill-treatment, Zack was the only thing that made sense.

In a silent plea, I stared up at the sky. “Moon goddess, please wake him up. Please…..” I muttered in a choked whisper.

Slowly as the rain tapered off, it soon hit me that I was the only one in the graveyard. Today was his death anniversary yet no one visited him. Not even his grandparents who victimized the urgent need for an heir and most importantly, not even Darius, my husband honored his anniversary.

My heart sank into my stomach, staring at Zack’s grave with a face filled with nothing but horror.

Mustering the courage to stand on my feet, I took tiny steps toward the car, my heart pounding in my chest with every step that I took.

I couldn’t drive!

I was too weak to even hold the keys.

I crumbled to the ground, my fingers trembled as I clutched my phone, putting a call through my best friend.

The call went straight into a voice mail and amidst the tears that cascaded down my cheeks, I cried, pressing the phone to my ear.

“Susan………” My voice trailed off.

“Susan, I called because I wanted you to pick me up at the cemetery. By the time that you would have received this, I must have left. I keep plunging into this darkness every day and things keep on worsening between Darius and me. However, I am following your advice by hoping that things get better between us”

“So, when you see this, please call me.” The phone fell from my hands while I buried my face between my knees.

In my world full of constant chaos, Susan was the only thing that made sense. She stood by me when I lost my son to the cold hands of death, she loved Zack in a way that his father never did.

Susan never castigated him aside like Darius and his family did just because he was autistic. She saw beyond his special condition and loved him for being the child that he was.

I was soon snapped out of my thoughts when I received a call, thinking that it was Susan. The faint smile on my face died when I noticed that it was a call from my maid.

Deliberating whether to answer the call or not, I heaved an exasperated sigh, pressing the phone to my ear. “Hi…..”

She said almost immediately. “Luna Elodie, are you still at the cemetery? Can you please come to the pack house as fast as possible?”

The urgency laced in her voice caused me to raise a brow in confusion. “Why?”

“The Alpha is currently throwing a party and he has found his……”

I cut in. “What? Party?”

The phone slipped off my hands, falling to the ground while her words kept resounding in my head.

I repeated her words. “He is throwing a party?”

Party?

For a second, I tried to wrap my head around things, trying to think of a reasonable reason why a party was being thrown at the pack house.

No matter how much I thought about it, it didn’t just make any sense.

Today was our son’s second death anniversary and he was throwing a party to celebrate what exactly? To celebrate the fact that the boy he considered a humiliation was dead?

My blood boiled with anger!

It was enough that he was heartless to not give a damn about my son and me.

But he had totally crossed the line this time! I was here mourning the death of our son and he was at the pack house, throwing a party?

This was the limit!

In a fit of rage, I drove to the pack house, ignoring the maids who lowered their heads. Clenching my fist and with every step that I took, the melodious song that filled the air triggered all of the senses in my head.

Pushing the closed doors to the hall open, my chest heaved up and I almost screamed at the top of my lungs when my words trailed. “Da……”

Right in the middle of the hall, Darius genuflected, a woman standing before him, her other hands flying over her mouth as she squealed in excitement. “Yes, I will marry you”

I watched as he slipped the ring through her fingers and he stood up as they both reveled in each other’s embrace.

My lips parted in shock and I was stunned into silence.

Was I dreaming?

It was certainly a dream.

Because if it wasn’t a dream, then why was my husband proposing to another woman?

With his back turned to me, I heard as he gave his grand speech. “Ever since I found my one true mate, I knew that it was time to set things right. Today is a happy day for me because not only will I be getting married to my mate, but I can’t wait to make her the Luna of this park”

Amidst the murmur that erupted amongst the crowd, his words resounded in my head. “The new Luna”

I was the Luna.

What the heck was he talking about?

Slowly, I darted my eyes to the woman who he called his mate and in that moment, she turned in my direction, locking eyes with me.

It felt like everything was spinning around me and my eyes closed briefly.

“No!” I muttered under my breath, placing a hand on my forehead.

My eyes fluttered open, my eyes meeting hers and slowly, a smile crept at the corner of her lips.

“Susan…..”

She grinned. “Surprise, Elodie!”

Darius turned to look at me and with a face devoid of emotion, he walked towards me. “It is good that you are here to witness this blissful moment. Finally, I am sure that you have realized that it is time to sign the divorce papers”

Staring intently at his face, I burst into a peal of hysterical laughter, my heart shattering into pieces. “Divorce? Blissful moment? Happy Day! Have you forgotten what day today is? Today is your son’s death anniversary” I hit him on the chest.

“This must be a joke!”

Darius’s eyes darkened to pewter. “How many times would I tell you to never address that boy as mine? He isn’t my son, okay! Sign the divorce papers as fast as possible because for your information, Susan is going to give me my real heir. She is carrying my child”

Darting my eyes to Susan who strutted towards us while rubbing her hands on her stomach, she smiled. “You heard my fiancée right, sign the divorce papers!”

Honestly, it still felt like I was dreaming because there was in no way that the woman I considered my sister was doing this to me.

“Is this a prank?” I asked, staring at Susan, hoping that she would tell me it was all an act meant to bring Darius and me closer to each other.

With a face devoid of emotion, she responded. “This is reality!”

Her words shattered my heart into pieces and I screamed at the top of my lungs. “How can you do this to me? I did everything for you Darius! I even went as far as stealing my family’s business ideas just to help your company” I grabbed him by the collar of his shirt.

Darius snarled, grabbing me by the hands swiftly. “And who asked you? I never asked for your help and deep down, you know that I have never liked you. This is what you get for forcing yourself on me”

He continued. “You must be a clown Elodie. Deep inside of you, you know that we mean nothing to each other! You trapped me with the pregnancy by forcing a child that wasn’t mine on me and that was how you were able to become the Luna!”

My eyes watered and my voice was barely above a whisper. “I trapped you? Zack is your son”

“Enough! In my family genealogy, no one has ever given birth to a child with special needs. I know that he isn’t mine plus you are not even fit to become my Luna! Just look at you” His face scrunched in disgust.

“You have become a shadow of yourself! You are almost nearing obesity, Elodie and you keep getting ugly with every passing second”

A tear tracked down my face and I muttered through gritted teeth. “How dare you?”

Darius rolled his eyes to the back as he flung the divorce papers at me. “Do what is necessary and leave my house”

As he walked away, Susan stood before me, clicking her tongue in her mouth and a smile crept at the corner of her lips. “You heard my fiancé. Sign the papers and leave and if you don’t want to leave, you are welcome to be our child’s nanny.”
