Has to be a joke

Chapter Two

Elodie

My heart shattered into innumerable irreparable pieces as Susan strutted off, her hips swaying by her side.

The air thickened with tension and when I raised my head, the guests fixated on me, their gazes heavy with a mixture of disgust and contempt.

They all hated me.

They all despised me because I ended up being the one becoming the Luna and the fact they believed the narrative of me being the one trapping him with the pregnancy shattered my heart into pieces.

They totally had no idea about what happened so how could they stare at me with so much disdain?

Darius saved me on the night of a party when I was almost sexually assaulted by a drunkard. That was when I fell in love with him.

One thing led to another and we had a one-night stand which led to my pregnancy. My father being an influential member and the head of the council wouldn’t allow me to conceive out of wedlock neither would Darius’s late grandfather.

Then, Darius pleaded with me to abort the pregnancy but I didn’t want that— Just the mere thought of a life growing inside of me fascinated me but on knowing that he held no affection towards me, I wanted to raise the child on my own.

But, the elders weren’t having it all and like that, Darius and I were compelled to get married even though we were never mates.

Darius would always blame me for ruining his life— He blamed me for everything!

Because of that, I tried to please him, hoping that he would fall in love with him. I gave him the shares that belonged to me, sharing secrets about my family’s business with him and because of all the things I did, he became one the youngest billionaires in the world.

But now, with the way things were going, the realization hit me that I had shot myself in the legs.

Susan’s words snapped me out of my reverie as she walked towards me. “Are you really considering being the nanny and is that why you haven’t left yet?”

Locking gazes with the same eyes that I thought comforted me, a scoff left my lips and my voice was barely above a whisper. “Why did you do this to me? It shouldn’t have been you” At that moment, it felt like a thousand needles pierced into my heart.

Susan rolled her eyes to the back as she shrugged. “What did you expect me to do when my mate turned out to be your husband? What did you expect me to do?”

On the verge of tears, I muttered in a choked whisper. “For how long has this been going on?”

Susan leaned forward, her breath grazing my ear as she said in a conspiratorial whisper. “Two years! I have always been in love with your husband, my best friend”

It was weird.

It was weird that the same woman who would always tell me to tolerate Darius was the same woman who had driven a dagger into my chest.

All the times that I suspected that Darius had another woman, Susan would always chastise me for not trusting him— She was the other woman.

Whispering in my ear, Susan said. “Do you also want to know another interesting fact?”

Shivers ran through my spine and dread settled at the pit of my stomach as her words resounded in my head.

“The night of your son’s funeral when you called me crying about how much you wanted Darius by your side because you couldn’t sleep, do you know where he was?”

“Your beloved Darius was sleeping next to me in bed. That was the night he marked me as his mate!”

Different emotions swirled inside of me and anger boiled within me. The urge to wrap my hands around her neck and snap the life out of her overwhelmed me.

The urge to contort into my werewolf form and pounce on her took hold of my senses. My fingers trembled, waiting to inflict pain on her.

With a sudden surge of fury, I shoved her to the ground with so much intensity.

In a fit of rage, I screamed at the top of my lungs. “How could you! I trusted you……” My words trailed and I almost broke down in tears.

“I did,” I said in a whisper.

They didn’t deserve my tears nor did they deserve to see me cry.

The more I glared at Susan, the more my anger intensified. Darting my eyes off her as she tried to scramble to her footing, I fixed my gaze on Darius who clutched an envelope.

“How dare you….” He thundered.

My fingers squeezed into folds and my jaw clenched. Without thinking twice, I marched towards Darius, snatching the envelope containing the divorce papers from his grasp.

“Did you just push my mate!”

Staring daggers at him, my heart thudded as I seized the pen from his breast pocket.

Placing the divorce papers on the decorated table as I shoved the bottle away, causing it to shatter on the ground, I scribbled my name across the document.

“What the heck are you doing? Why are you causing a…..”

I cut Darius shut, slamming the pen down.

“This is it Darius. The divorce papers”

Holding my head in defiance even though my fingers trembled, I reached for the wedding ring, sliding it off my fingers.

In the blink of an eye, I hurled it at him and it clattered against the ground at his feet.

With a face devoid of emotions, he stared daggers at me and I matched his stare.

Folding his hands behind him, he said. “Good! Now that you have signed the divorce papers, leave!”

A laugh almost rippled from my mouth. The tension was palpable in the room as I closed the space between us. “You know, the reason you are able to treat me this way is because my father is currently in a coma”

“Leave!”

“I will leave, but I will be back!”

Darius burst into a peal of hysterical laughter. “Back to begging me to take you back as my wife? You really have high hopes”

Shaking my head slowly, a smile crossed my face. “No, you are wrong this time”

“Alpha Darius, I would be back to ruin you so bad that you would grovel at my feet for mercy. Anticipate my return.”

Leaving the pack house as I made way for my car, I stopped in my tracks when I heard someone call my name.

“Luna Elodie”

My heart sank into my stomach because of the way she had addressed me. I wasn’t the Luna anymore so why…..

Turning to look at her, my personal maid,Ava, with tears welling in her eyes pulled me into a hug.

“Please don’t go”

Patting her on the back slowly while I resisted the urge to cry, I pushed her away slowly. “What is this behavior, Ava? You have a new Luna now, why are you still addressing me as your Luna?”

Taking my hands as she squeezed it softly, she muttered. “You are my Luna, forever”

Cupping her cheeks, I wiped off her tears, forcing out a smile. “You would be fine, Ava. I promise you that you will be fine here”

I was about to turn when she grabbed me by the wrist swiftly. Swinging my head in her direction, I asked. “What is it, Ava?”

Heaving an exasperated sigh, she stretched an envelope to me. “Your family’s doctor came looking for you. He wanted to wait but Alpha Darius sent him away”

My stomach tied a knot and my fingers clenched.

Forcing out a smile, I collected the envelope from her hands, removing the paper. “I wonder what kind of ailment I am diagnosed with again. Since everything and everyone is against me, I wouldn’t be shocked if the test results say that I have cancer and…….” My words trailed, fixing my gaze on the test results.

For a second, it felt like my eyesight was starting to malfunction.

I mean, that could only be the perfect explanation because there was in no way this was real.

How could I be pregnant?
