A Shifting Alliance

*(Laura’s POV)*

The fire crackled between us as we made our way back from hunting for food. The sun was setting, casting an orange glow over the horizon. I could feel Troy's eyes on me, always watching, always analyzing. Ever since we started working together, he had been trying to figure me out, but he was wasting his time. No one could truly know what was going on in my head, especially not Troy. I liked it that way.

"Where did you leave the girl?" I asked as we approached the cave where we had hidden her earlier.

Troy motioned to the west. "In that cave over there," he replied, gesturing with his chin.

I shook my head, suppressing a sigh. "She’s not there anymore."

Troy paused, a frown creasing his brow as he stared at me. "How do you know?"

"Common sense," I replied flatly, not willing to tell him the truth. The real reason I knew she was gone was because I had seen it in my vision. But I wasn’t about to reveal that little detail to him. The less he knew about
