RAELYNN

"Congratulations on your wedding anniversary, Lynn," Judy, my childhood best friend, said, beaming at me.

I forced out a smile, scanning the venue of the party. I was supposed to be having the time of my life tonight. However, all of this was just a pathetic cover-up.

"By the way, where is your husband? He's nowhere in sight," Judy said, and I shrugged.

"He's an Alpha, you know? He's probably going around meeting the guests," I said, and she snickered.

"There you are. I've been looking for you," a familiar voice said from behind us, and I stiffened. Plastering a false smile on my face, I turned around to face him.

Rai Vidal.

He was the Alpha of Black Claw Pack, the strongest werewolf pack in both southern and northern America. He was my fated mate.

And he was also the man to whom I was bound in a contractual marriage.

Flashing me a grin that was definitely not genuine, he held out a hand towards me. Without a word, I placed my hand in his and let him steer me to his side. He glanced at Judy, who was staring at him with wide eyes. It wasn't surprising. My husband was a stunner.

"Hello there, Judy. You look lovely in that dress," he stated, and turned away from her, taking me with him.

"You haven't broken any of the rules already, have you?" Rai asked when we'd moved far enough from Judy. To others, we would appear like a loving couple holding onto each other, whispering sweet nothings.

"Not that I know of," I responded through gritted teeth.

"My parents want to see you. Don't break out of character, do you understand that?" He said and I nodded.

"Let's go."

Rai led me across the hall, and soon, I caught sight of his parents. Rai's father beamed at me and waved.

"Here comes my favourite daughter-in-law," he said and I lowered my head in greeting. He held out his arms to embrace me and pulled away after a few seconds.

"How have you been?" he asked.

"I've been doing perfectly well," I responded, and he nodded.

"It's been a year already, Raelynn. Why haven't you given us a grandson yet?" My mother-in-law teased.

It took me a lot of effort to avoid scoffing. There was no way I could get pregnant if my husband just wouldn't touch me.

"Rai!"

We all turned at the sound of a pitchy feminine voice. I clenched my fists at the sight of the owner of the voice.

Nadia Thorne.

My husband's first love.

Watching her beam at us made my stomach churn.

"Nadia! Look at you! You look beautiful! How was your trip to Berlin?" Rai's mother said, and Nadia embraced her.

"It was amazing. I came because I didn't want to miss the event. It's Rai's first wedding anniversary after all," she stated, tucking strands of her black hair behind an ear.

She turned to look at Rai, her gaze turning seductive. I felt sick to my stomach.

"Did you miss me, Rai? Gosh, it feels like it's been ages since I last saw you," she continued, moving towards my husband.

"It's been a while. Berlin seems to have treated you nicely," Rai said, giving her a smile.

A smile he wasn't faking.

Was it wrong for me to feel pained?

"Look at your hair. It looks longer than before. It suits you better," Nadia continued, reaching up to touch the strands of his hair curled around the collar of his shirt.

The urge to slap her hand away grew until I couldn't take it anymore.

"Excuse me, I need to go to the restroom," I said, turning to plant a kiss on Rai's cheek. I didn't wait to see what expressions they all had on their faces, but I hoped Nadia got my message.

With fast strides, I headed far away from them. I was tempted to glance at them one more time. However, a server stepped right into my line of vision.

"A glass of champagne?" She said and I nodded, accepting the drink she held out to me.

Stressed, I chugged down the champagne while I made my way out of the hall and headed straight to my hotel room. There, I sat down on the bed and tried not to get worked up.

A few minutes later, I heard the door open, and I looked up at the sound of heavy footsteps. My brows creased up when my gaze rested on Rai's amber gaze. He slammed the door shut.

I rose to my feet, rushing to his side to steady him when he swayed.

He brought a hand to the side of my face, leaning closer to me.

"R-Rai... what are you doing?" I stuttered, and he cupped my face, his unfocused gaze resting on my lips.

"Y...you..." He growled, wrapping an arm around my waist. His eyes flashed a bright silver, an indicator that he was barely in control.

My heart thundered against my rib cage like a war drum, his pleasant scent saturating my senses.

"Rai, please snap out of--"

I'd barely completed my statement when he kissed me deeply, his hands gliding up my thigh.

With me in his arms, he moved forward until the back of my knees hit the edge of the bed.

Rai did not relent, he moved closer until I was lying on the bed, gazing up at him as he hovered above me.

When he kissed me again, a tear slid down the side of my face. He would never touch me like this if he was sober. I knew I would regret this if I didn't stop him.

"Rai, please..."

He silenced me with another kiss, and I closed my eyes, my chaotic feelings growing more turbulent.

In a few minutes, he had taken off my clothes, leaving me in a vulnerable state.

He kissed his way down to my belly button, and I brought a hand to his locks, burying my fingers into them.

And then, the pleasure came in waves.

When he buried himself into me, I came undone beneath him over and over again. Then he collapsed atop my body, almost crushing me with his weight.

A lump lodged itself in my throat as I brought a trembling hand to the back of his head and stroked the silky strands of his hair.

...

I awoke the next morning, feeling sore. There was a note on the bed that said, "Come to the house once you wake up."

I recognized the handwriting to be Rai's. The memory of the previous night's events smacked me, and panic set in.

So I hurried home.

When I arrived at the house, I found my belongings packed outside the house. Terrified, I ran into Rai's study and found him with Nadia.

"There you are," Rai spat, his tone dripping with venom.

"I can explain. Last night --"

He cut me off.

"You planned the whole thing, didn't you? You made sure my drink was spiked. You were desperate. I didn't know you were that shameless," he stated, and I shook my head, tears filling my eyes.

"Don't say that, Rai. She's still your wife," Nadia said.

I'd never felt so humiliated.

"It's a misunderstanding. I swear, I didn't plan anything. I wouldn't do such a thing," I said, and Rai slammed a hand on my desk.

"There is evidence of your misconduct. You disgust me. Get out of my house. You broke the contract rules. All of this is over," he spat, and I went weak in the knees.

"Rai, please don't do this," I pleaded, and he stormed past me with Nadia by his side. I followed after him, desperate. He didn't know this, but I'd always loved him. I still do.

"You don't have to go that far, Rai. You can just give her a mild punishment," Nadia said, and Rai halted in his tracks. He turned to look at me, his eyes still blazing with fury.

"I, Rai Vidal..." He began, and I shook my head, terror paralyzing me.

He wouldn't....

He wouldn't break me like that...

"I, Rai Vidal, reject you, Raelynn Hills, as my mate," he continued, and I sank to my knees, letting out a cry of pain. My heart felt like it was about to crumble. I could feel the bond between us stretching thin until it snapped.

Rai turned away from me, and I reached out for him, black spots swarming my vision.

"Rai, please," I breathed, and he ignored me as he walked away with Nadia, who glanced at me and flashed me a mocking smile.

I stared at my belongings, which Rai had thrown aside, and silently picked myself up from the ground. My whole body ached viciously. It was a side effect of the rejection.

Knowing that I had nowhere else to go but my father's house, I carried my belongings and flagged down a taxi that took me to my childhood home.

I got there a few hours later. Dragging in a shaky breath, I knocked on the door, and it opened. My eyes widened when I saw my dad standing there.

"What are you doing here?" He demanded, and I stiffened.

"Dad..."

"You are no daughter of mine, you are no longer welcome here," he spat, his eyes clouded with fury.

"Dad!" I cried out, tears filling my eyes.

RAELYNN A year ago, I discovered that Rai Vidal, the man I'd had a crush on for the longest time, was my fated mate. My father had been overjoyed because being mated to Alpha Rai would mean that I was to become Luna of one of the strongest packs. However, what he didn't know was that Rai didn't want me. He was in love with Nadia who was not ready to settle down for marriage. Since he didn't want to taint his reputation, he made me sign a contract with him in secret. I was to become his contract wife until Nadia became his wife. It was stupid. Even so, for the sake of my father, for the sake of the feelings I had towards him, I agreed to it. A part of me had believed that I would succeed in winning Rai's heart. Yet there I was, standing in front of my childhood home. I'd just been stabbed in the back by both my father and my husband."You don't mean that--" I started to say, tears blurring my vision. Before I could say anything else, my father slapped me across the face. It s

FIVE YEARS LATER,RAELYNN "Doctor Lynn, your phone has been ringing since you entered the surgical room," Rose, my assistant, said to me as soon as I stepped into my office."An unknown number?" I asked, and she nodded. "It's quite strange. This person has called you twenty-six times already. Maybe an ex?" I chuckled, accepting the phone she held out to me. I had a feeling that the caller was no other person than my father. It was just about time. After the incident, five years ago, I faked my death and stayed in the region dominated by Lycans, with the man who had rescued me from what could have been my death. Only recently did I pull some strings to get my father to know that I was still alive. While in my grip, my phone rang out. The call was from an unknown number. "You can go now. Thank you, Rose," I said to my assistant, and she nodded before walking out of my office. Sinking into my seat, I picked up the call and brought the phone to my ear. "Raelynn, it's me. Yo

RAELYNN "Is everything going fine over there?" Klaus asked. I could sense his concern through the phone. Despite the fact that he was the Lycan king, we were like family."He wants me to go on a blind date, except...it doesn't seem like a mere blind date. According to him, I'm supposed to meet my date at a party," I said, and Klaus frowned at me, his green eyes clouding up with distrust."That does sound off. What are you going to do?" He said."I made up my mind already," I told him, and he raised a brow."And that is?""I'll attend the party. I need to know what is really going on," I said to him, and he sighed."Please be careful. I do not like this. But, I'll let you do what you want. You're a grown woman after all," He stated, and I grinned at him."Thanks, Klaus. What about my little princesses? How are they doing?" I asked, and he chuckled."They were both asleep an hour ago. They both just barged into my room. It's as though they could sense---""Is that mummy on the ph

RAIFew minutes ago, "Did you hear?" My younger sister asked, her voice tinged with excitement. It was quite rare for her to call me out of the blue. She knew I wasn't one to listen to gossip, either. It made me wonder why she was really doing this. "Izzy, can we talk later? I have a business to attend to," I said, unable to hide my growing irritation."Just hear me out. You remember Raelynn, don't you?" She said, and I swear, my heart stopped beating for a moment. I'd heard of her death a few years before. Hearing my sister say her name worsened my already sour mood. "I'm hanging up-""She's alive!"I froze, every cell in my body freezing over. "What?" I breathed. "She's not dead. She returned to her family home not too long ago. Isn't that great?" She said.I swallowed hard, relief sinking into me. Only now do I realize that I'd felt responsible for her death, even though I had nothing to do with it. "I know that you miss her. I saw you that night, gazing at her photo,"

RAELYNN I was fuming as I drove to my childhood home. Everything that had happened earlier kept replaying itself in my head like a nightmare stuck on repeat. Although I'd expected foul play of some kind, the party had been more terrible than I'd imagined. What's worse is that Rai had shown up.He was the last person I'd expected to see, and yet, my heart had gone out of control the moment I'd seen him. All that pain and grief I'd chosen to bury had swelled to the surface.Tightening my grip on the steering wheel, I took a deep breath and willed myself to be calm.Even so, I couldn't shake off my emotions. I could still remember the way he'd looked at me. He didn't seem to have changed much. His hair was a little longer than usual, and there was a different sharpness in his stare. On arriving at the house, I stormed into my room to pack up my things.I heard the door creak open, but refused to pay attention to whoever had just walked in."Rae, what's wrong? RAI I stared at the several messages I hadn't bothered to read until now. Raelynn had sent a ton of them five years ago. She must have been desperate. I was curious. How had she managed to stay hidden for all these years and why did she have to fake her death? Heaving a sigh, I closed my eyes and leaned back on my study. Right then, there was a knock on the door. "Come in," I said, opening my eyes. Austin, my Beta strode in with a grim expression on his face. "Did you find anything?" I asked and he heaved a sigh. "Honestly, not much. Raelynn has lived like a ghost for the past five years," he said and I frowned as I mulled over his words."There has to be someone behind her. Someone who is capable of wiping her records," I said. "I'll keep looking," Austin affirmed and I sighed, rubbing my temples. "I understand that you're curious but she's no longer your wife, you know that, don't you?" He continued and I gave him a blank stare. "I'm aware of that. You don't have to tel

RAELYNN Bumping into him along the hallway had set my nerves on fire. Rai had dared to ask me why I was at a hotel. We were nothing to each other now. Nonetheless, my blood kept heating up each time we encountered each other. Even now, while he was still out of it, he still possessed the ability to piss me off. I hated the fact that I felt concern for him while he sat on the floor looking dazed."I found you on the floor. You were not breathing. I had to perform a CPR on you," I said, trying not to cringe at the memory of my lips touching his."What?" His eyes widened."It looks like you have a fever too," I pointed out and he blinked, failing when he attempted to stand up. I sighed, annoyance bubbling inside of me. Why wouldn't he sit still? He winced and I bit my lower lip, noticing the way sweat dripped down the sides of his face.I held out a hand to touch his forehead, my frown deepening. He was burning up. RAELYNN Rai heaved an exasperated sigh and sank into his chair. He stared at me for a moment, his face emotionless. "Fine. We have a deal," he said and I held out a hand for a handshake. His gaze lingered on my outstretched hand before he accepted my handshake. When our gazes met again, my breath hitched in my throat. Rai had the kind of gaze that never ceased to make me uncomfortable. He'd always had such beautiful amber eyes which used to light up whenever he smiled. But, at the moment, those eyes were cold and empty. I had never seen him look so soulless. It seemed to me that he'd changed as much as I had. Refusing to have him notice my discomfort, I pulled away from him and returned to my seat. "How long has it been?" He asked, leaning back on his seat. "I've been a healer for three years," I told him and he merely blinked. "You don't even have a normal wolf," he spat and I narrowed my eyes at him, offended. It was true that I didn't have a wolf of my own. Nonethel

RAI My father was all smiles the moment he set his eyes on Raelynn. She beamed at him and took her seat by his bedside. It was almost impossible to tell that a couple of minutes ago, we had been at each other's throats. "I was so relieved when I heard that you'd returned, my dear," my father said. "It's good to see you again, James," Raelynn said and he grinned at her. "I heard about what you did for me. Thank you for saving my life," he said and she chuckled."I was only doing my job," she replied. She was clearly being modest about it. "I owe you an apology," my father started to say and Raelynn rose to her feet with a look of disapproval on her face. "You did nothing wrong," she said and he heaved a heavy sigh. "Clearly, I raised my son wrongly,” he stated and I rolled my eyes, folding my arms across my chest. There he was again. He was just as dramatic as ever. RAELYNN "Is everything alright?" I looked up at the sound of Judy's voice. She was sitting up on the bed, her messy blonde hair framing her face. "Maurice just called me. Apparently, my dad is in a critical condition," I told her and she frowned at me."Something smells fishy about this," she stated."You think so?" She nodded."I have a feeling it's a trap of sorts," she stated and I nodded in agreement. Either way, I needed to find out what was really going on."You still have to be careful. Who knows what they're planning?" Judy said, her tone clipped. She seemed truly annoyed. I couldn't help but smile. "It's not like they can plot something grand in a place like the medical centre," I said and she sighed. "Fine," she mumbled. After getting dressed, I promptly left for the medical centre and made inquiries to locate my father. Sure enough, he'd been admitted in one of the wards. He slowly pulled away and gave me a smile, his gaze filled with warmth."We should hang out sometime," he said, and I flashed him a smile."Maybe."When he took my hand and lowered his head to press a kiss to the back of my palm, I couldn't help but smile. He was such a charmer."Are you usually like this with every beautiful woman you encounter?" I teased, and he cracked a smile."No. Only to an exceptionally gorgeous woman who goes by the name Raelynn," he replied, and I chuckled."I should get going now. I had a great time tonight," I told him, and he nodded."Let me walk you to your car." The words had barely left his lips when I felt a familiar presence behind me. Turning around with a start, I came face-to-face with Rai. His face was devoid of expression, but his eyes told a different story. He was mad."Hello, Raelynn," he droned, and I heaved a sigh. All of a sudden, she slammed her forehead against mine, startling me."What the hell, Raelynn?!" I growled, and she blinked at me like a child caught with jelly all over her mouth. In that instant, my frustration died off. So I pulled away and straightened."Fine. Put on your seatbelt," I said, and she glared at me before grabbing her seatbelt. I slammed the door shut and settled down in the driver's seat."Since when did you get so petty?" I asked, and she scoffed at me."I've always been petty," she mumbled. I blinked at her, surprised by the sudden flutter in my chest when she made that statement."What happened to Raelynn, who was always calm and cool headed?" RAELYNN I stared at the palm of my hand, my eyes narrowed as I recalled the sudden burst of blue light that had emerged from my palm right when Rai had leaned into me. It had never happened before. The more I thought about it, the more I became puzzled. There was a knock on the door of my office. So, I looked up, my frown deepening. "It's me," I heard Nadia say. The corner of my mouth tilted upwards and I leaned back on my seat, the frown on my face fading away. "Come in," I stated and she walked in with a small gift basket containing some fruits. I folded my arms across my chest, eyeing her with a blank look on my face. "What brings you here?" I asked and she placed the small basket on the desk, right in front of me. RAI The pain in my head raged on and I felt sick to my stomach. It didn't help that I was burning up. I'd never felt like this before and for a moment, I wondered if I was infected. When Raelynn brought a hand to my forehead, I almost let out a moan. Her hand had an odd cooling effect. This was the first time I was truly witnessing the reason she was a healer. When she pulled away, my vision blurred and the raging heat flared up. I could feel my sweat dripping down my spine. "Can you walk?" She asked me, reaching out to touch me again. Instinctively, my body leaned towards her. It was not my intention to get too close but I could barely hold my body up anymore. So I fell forward, my head resting on her shoulder. A tremor racked my body in that instant and the excessive warmth in my body started to fade. I could vaguely hear her calling my name while the the sound of my own erratic heartbeat filled my head.
