RAI

Few minutes ago,

"Did you hear?" My younger sister asked, her voice tinged with excitement. It was quite rare for her to call me out of the blue. She knew I wasn't one to listen to gossip, either. It made me wonder why she was really doing this.

"Izzy, can we talk later? I have a business to attend to," I said, unable to hide my growing irritation.

"Just hear me out. You remember Raelynn, don't you?" She said, and I swear, my heart stopped beating for a moment.

I'd heard of her death a few years before. Hearing my sister say her name worsened my already sour mood.

"I'm hanging up-"

"She's alive!"

I froze, every cell in my body freezing over.

"What?" I breathed.

"She's not dead. She returned to her family home not too long ago. Isn't that great?" She said.

I swallowed hard, relief sinking into me. Only now do I realize that I'd felt responsible for her death, even though I had nothing to do with it.

"I know that you miss her. I saw you that night, gazing at her photo," my sister continued.

"Izzy," I warned, and she chuckled.

"You should go and see her---"

Lowering my phone from my ear, I abruptly ended the call and shoved my phone into the pocket of my coat, adjusting my tie.

Blankly, I stared at the door of the elevator. Raelynn's name bounced around my mind, it irked me. I had rejected her. Why am I still affected by her?

Cursing under my breath, I rubbed my forehead. The elevator doors slid open, and right then, the smell of cinnamon and strawberries hit my nostrils. I went still, my thoughts going on overdrive.

"It can't be..." I muttered.

Confused, I stepped out of the elevator, only to be greeted by an aggravating sight. Air rushed out of my lungs at the sight of her hurrying along the hallway, dressed in a gorgeous dress. I caught sight of the male hurrying after her and immediately sensed his hostility. One minute, I was standing by the elevator; the next, I was standing in front of her, shielding her from violence.

I did not hesitate to yank her stalker's arm out of its socket. He crumbled to the ground with a cry of pain.

Then I turned to look at her. I knew right then that I was in trouble.

Five years. It should be enough for me to forget about the woman who was once my contract wife. Nonetheless, the moment our gazes connected, my wolf stirred within me. And my chest tightened.

Her chestnut brown eyes slowly grew stormy as she stared at me. She appeared to be just as stunned as I was. Even so, it was clear that she wasn't happy to see me.

"Who the hell do you think you are?!" The alpha I'd just taken down growled. I could smell his fury. But it didn't matter. He had attempted to hit a woman. What's worse is that this woman was once my wife.

Turning away from Raelynn, I strode towards him and grabbed him by the shirt, lifting him off his feet. His eyes bulged in their sockets, and his face turned pale.

"W-who are you?" He stuttered.

"Does that matter?" I demanded, tightening my grip on his throat. He gasped, his face quickly turning red.

"Please, don't kill me," he choked out.

I turned to look at Raelynn, whose expression had turned stony.

"What's going on here? Who is he?" I said, and she frowned.

"I don't know. I met him at the party," she droned, and my brows knitted into a frown.

"A party? What party?" I asked.

"Her f-father invited us," the alpha in my grip gasped, beads of sweat forming on his forehead.

"Us?" I hissed, releasing him. He slumped to the ground, coughing hard.

"Here's a warning for you and the rest of your company: stay the hell away from this woman, or I'll be forced to chop off your body parts. Do you understand?" I said, and he nodded frantically, still coughing hard.

I watched him as he stumbled to his feet and hurried down the passageway.

Once he was out of sight, my gaze met Raelynn's. I could hear the sounds of footsteps approaching, so I grabbed her hand and pulled her into the elevator, quickly tapping the button for the 9th floor, where I was supposed to meet up with an important guest.

"Let go of my hand," Raelynn said through gritted teeth, and I slowly released her hand.

"You disappeared five years ago only to return and attend a party?" I demanded, and she glared at me.

"I was supposed to be on a date, none of this is your business," she retorted, and I stiffened.

"A date? Really? How shameless can you be?" I hissed, and she took a step towards me, her eyes clouding up with an intense emotion.

"Shameless? Who's the shameless one here, Alpha Rai?! You're the one who threw me aside like a ragged doll," she stated.

There was something about seeing her so angry that heated my blood. I'd never seen her so fired up. No, she had never shown me her angry face because she'd always acted all prim and proper. This was something new. Something that shouldn't excite me. I should be repulsed by her.

Why then does my gaze continually wander to her lips? Refusing to give in to these strange feelings, I fought back.

"Go ahead and play the victim. That's all you ever do," I spat, and rage flashed in her eyes.

Before I could process what she was doing, she'd grabbed me by my tie and yanked hard. We both stumbled forward, and she crashed into me, her face colliding with my chest. Her breasts were pressed against me, and I could feel her soft warmth with every inhale and exhale.

'Fuck,' I cursed inwardly as my manhood began to stir.

She trembled. It was most definitely not out of fear. It appeared to me that she'd held in so much resentment towards me. She pulled away from me, clenching her fists.

Slowly, she looked up at me, her chest heaving. Her full lips were parted, her eyelashes fluttering slightly. Has she always been this beautiful? I wondered.

"Where is she?" Raelynn suddenly demanded through her teeth, and I lowered my brows, puzzled.

"Who?"

Her eyes darkened, and she took another step closer to me. She halted right in front of me, with only a little space between us. Up close, I could see the flecks of gold in her eyes. I'd almost forgotten. But in this moment, I was reminded of how stunning she was.

She appeared to be even more beautiful than before. She looked healthier, too.

"Your little bitch. Why aren't you with her right now?"

She had to be talking about Nadia. But why would she drag her into our conversation?

"I bet you got married to her the moment I was out of the picture. You probably have ugly children running around the house as well. Why don't you run along? Go back to her. She must be waiting."

Sarcasm dripped heavily from her words. But what she didn't know was that Nadia was not my wife.

"You can't blame me for what happened. If you didn't get ahead of yourself, I wouldn't have had to ---"

Raelynn cut me off, and I clenched my jaw, annoyed.

"You refused to listen to me! No matter how many times I begged. You even tried to --"

The door slid open, and she shook her head and stormed out of the elevator.

"To hell with you, Rai," she spat and stormed off. The moment I stepped out of the elevator, I nearly bumped into Nadia, who was standing by the elevator, staring at Raelynn's retreating figure with wide eyes.

"Is that....her? How is she still alive?" She asked, and I ignored her statement.

"Let's go. We're going to be late," I said, moving past her.

"Wait, what's that on your shirt?" Nadia said, and I turned to look at her, my patience wearing thin.

"What are you talking about?" I demanded, and her eyes misted over.

"Why do you have a lipstick mark on your shirt?!" She exclaimed, a deep frown settling in between her brows.

I lowered my gaze, and there it was on my white shirt. A bright red lipstick mark.

RAELYNN I was fuming as I drove to my childhood home. Everything that had happened earlier kept replaying itself in my head like a nightmare stuck on repeat. Although I'd expected foul play of some kind, the party had been more terrible than I'd imagined. What's worse is that Rai had shown up.He was the last person I'd expected to see, and yet, my heart had gone out of control the moment I'd seen him. All that pain and grief I'd chosen to bury had swelled to the surface.Tightening my grip on the steering wheel, I took a deep breath and willed myself to be calm.Even so, I couldn't shake off my emotions. I could still remember the way he'd looked at me. He didn't seem to have changed much. His hair was a little longer than usual, and there was a different sharpness in his stare. On arriving at the house, I stormed into my room to pack up my things.I heard the door creak open, but refused to pay attention to whoever had just walked in."Rae, what's wrong? RAI I stared at the several messages I hadn't bothered to read until now. Raelynn had sent a ton of them five years ago. She must have been desperate. I was curious. How had she managed to stay hidden for all these years and why did she have to fake her death? Heaving a sigh, I closed my eyes and leaned back on my study. Right then, there was a knock on the door. "Come in," I said, opening my eyes. Austin, my Beta strode in with a grim expression on his face. "Did you find anything?" I asked and he heaved a sigh. "Honestly, not much. Raelynn has lived like a ghost for the past five years," he said and I frowned as I mulled over his words."There has to be someone behind her. Someone who is capable of wiping her records," I said. "I'll keep looking," Austin affirmed and I sighed, rubbing my temples. "I understand that you're curious but she's no longer your wife, you know that, don't you?" He continued and I gave him a blank stare. "I'm aware of that. You don't have to tel

RAELYNN Bumping into him along the hallway had set my nerves on fire. Rai had dared to ask me why I was at a hotel. We were nothing to each other now. Nonetheless, my blood kept heating up each time we encountered each other. Even now, while he was still out of it, he still possessed the ability to piss me off. I hated the fact that I felt concern for him while he sat on the floor looking dazed."I found you on the floor. You were not breathing. I had to perform a CPR on you," I said, trying not to cringe at the memory of my lips touching his."What?" His eyes widened."It looks like you have a fever too," I pointed out and he blinked, failing when he attempted to stand up. I sighed, annoyance bubbling inside of me. Why wouldn't he sit still? He winced and I bit my lower lip, noticing the way sweat dripped down the sides of his face.I held out a hand to touch his forehead, my frown deepening. He was burning up. "I know. I had no choice either. Since when did it begin?" I

RAELYNN Rai heaved an exasperated sigh and sank into his chair. He stared at me for a moment, his face emotionless. "Fine. We have a deal," he said and I held out a hand for a handshake. His gaze lingered on my outstretched hand before he accepted my handshake. When our gazes met again, my breath hitched in my throat. Rai had the kind of gaze that never ceased to make me uncomfortable. He'd always had such beautiful amber eyes which used to light up whenever he smiled. But, at the moment, those eyes were cold and empty. I had never seen him look so soulless. It seemed to me that he'd changed as much as I had. Refusing to have him notice my discomfort, I pulled away from him and returned to my seat. "How long has it been?" He asked, leaning back on his seat. "I've been a healer for three years," I told him and he merely blinked. "You don't even have a normal wolf," he spat and I narrowed my eyes at him, offended. It was true that I didn't have a wolf of my own. Nonethel

I said and he frowned."You said it was for pack business," he stressed, his frown deepening."Alpha Rai knows about what Stefan tried to do to me. He was there that day," I stated and he went pale."That's not possible. He was not invited--""It doesn't matter now. What matters is the fact that Alpha Rai was the one who protected me from Alpha Stefan," I continued. "You're such a good liar. You almost made me believe your ridiculous story," Maurice said."Please, Rae. Don't turn your back on us. We can't stay in debt like this," my father pleaded."If you're so adamant on repaying your debt, you can still do so. I'm not the only daughter you have. You can marry Caroline off to Alpha Stefan. RAI "Forgive me, Alpha Rai. I just thought it was the right thing to do," the Omega who knelt at my feet pleaded, her head bowed. I stared at her in disgust. The emotions surging through me was slowly becoming a massive wave. A part of me had always thought of the possibility that Raelynn was not guilty of the offence I'd accused her of. But when this situation smacked me in the face, it left me feeling like a mess. I looked up at the sound of the knock on the door, my stomach tightening. It must be her, I thought as I moved away from the omega and sank into my seat, trying not to show how stressed I was. "Come in," I said and the door jerked open. Raelynn stormed in, accompanied by the sound of her stilettos hitting the floor. She paused when she saw the woman kneeling by my desk. Then, she narrowed her eyes, her brows creasing up."You told me you found the culprit," she hissed, her tone laced with annoyance. "I did," I confirmed and she approached me, placing her handba

RAELYNN "There have been new cases of the infected in the past twenty-four hours. There's a high chance that one of us is infected right now," Austin, Rai's beta said from his position by the door of my office. "What do you think, Alpha Rai?" I said, folding my arms across my chest.Rai leaned back on his seat, his face stoic. "If anyone is infected, it's most likely Austin," he said and his beta scoffed. "Have you learnt anything new about the infection?" Rai asked, his voice tight with tension. Anyone who saw us seated in my office would sense the edge cutting tension swirling around us. I had expected this, especially after the words we'd exchanged the day before, in his study. It was clear that we both planned to pretend that we were unaffected by each other's presence. But this was my office. My territory. If anyone was going to be uncomfortable, it had to be Rai. Even so, he was pretty good at keeping his features blank. "The illness has different stages. It was almost impossible to tell that a couple of minutes ago, we had been at each other's throats. "I was so relieved when I heard that you'd returned, my dear," my father said. "It's good to see you again, James," Raelynn said and he grinned at her. "I heard about what you did for me. Thank you for saving my life," he said and she chuckled."I was only doing my job," she replied. She was clearly being modest about it. "I owe you an apology," my father started to say and Raelynn rose to her feet with a look of disapproval on her face. "You did nothing wrong," she said and he heaved a heavy sigh. She nodded."I have a feeling it's a trap of sorts," she stated and I nodded in agreement. Either way, I needed to find out what was really going on."You still have to be careful. He was such a charmer."Are you usually like this with every beautiful woman you encounter?" I teased, and he cracked a smile."No. Only to an exceptionally gorgeous woman who goes by the name Raelynn," he replied, and I chuckled."I should get going now. I slammed the door shut and settled down in the driver's seat."Since when did you get so petty?" I asked, and she scoffed at me."I've always been petty," she mumbled. RAI The pain in my head raged on and I felt sick to my stomach. It didn't help that I was burning up. I'd never felt like this before and for a moment, I wondered if I was infected. When Raelynn brought a hand to my forehead, I almost let out a moan. Her hand had an odd cooling effect. This was the first time I was truly witnessing the reason she was a healer. When she pulled away, my vision blurred and the raging heat flared up. I could feel my sweat dripping down my spine. "Can you walk?" She asked me, reaching out to touch me again. Instinctively, my body leaned towards her. It was not my intention to get too close but I could barely hold my body up anymore. So I fell forward, my head resting on her shoulder. A tremor racked my body in that instant and the excessive warmth in my body started to fade. I could vaguely hear her calling my name while the the sound of my own erratic heartbeat filled my head.
