RAELYNN

"Is everything going fine over there?" Klaus asked. I could sense his concern through the phone. Despite the fact that he was the Lycan king, we were like family.

"He wants me to go on a blind date, except...it doesn't seem like a mere blind date. According to him, I'm supposed to meet my date at a party," I said, and Klaus frowned at me, his green eyes clouding up with distrust.

"That does sound off. What are you going to do?" He said.

"I made up my mind already," I told him, and he raised a brow.

"And that is?"

"I'll attend the party. I need to know what is really going on," I said to him, and he sighed.

"Please be careful. I do not like this. But, I'll let you do what you want. You're a grown woman after all," He stated, and I grinned at him.

"Thanks, Klaus. What about my little princesses? How are they doing?" I asked, and he chuckled.

"They were both asleep an hour ago. They both just barged into my room. It's as though they could sense---"

"Is that mummy on the phone?" I heard my twin girls say.

However, before Klaus could respond, they called out for me, and their faces popped up on the screen of my phone.

"Mummy!! We miss you! When are you coming back?!" They piped, and I smiled, gazing at their beautiful faces.

I missed them.

They had amber eyes just like their father, but they mostly took after me.

"Mummy! Did you go to Daddy? Suzie told me you went to see him," Savannah, the younger twin, said, and I cringed.

"I didn't. I went to see my father," I replied, and Savannah pouted.

"What about our father?" Suzie asked.

"Maybe some other time, just not today," I replied.

"Okay. Buy some chocolates for us, please," She said, and I grinned.

"Alright, sweetie. I love you both. Now, go back to bed, okay?"

They both nodded.

"Goodnight, mummy," they chorused.

"Goodnight, Lynn," Klaus said, and the line went dead.

I let out a sigh and laid down on my bed, my gaze fixed on the ceiling.

Five years ago, I'd been rescued by Klaus and had lived for a while in his palace. According to him, he'd gone to the neighbouring werewolf pack for an official business when he'd sensed my distress.

Klaus grew fond of me. Apparently, I had a close resemblance to his first mate, whom he'd lost at a very young age.

After the birth of my beautiful twins, he grew attached to my children.

He had been there for me as a father figure, even when I'd chosen to become a healer.

Closing my eyes, I thought about the party I was to attend. No matter how I tried to ignore it, it just felt wrong.

....

The next day,

I stared at my reflection in the mirror while I fiddled with the white pearl necklace sitting around my neck. Dressed in an sleeveless red dress and a pair of stilettos, I was ready to attend the party.

Caroline had been avoiding me since the previous day. It didn't bother me. I just wanted to get this over with.

Taking a deep breath, I grabbed my purse off the dressing table and headed out of the house. The drive to the venue of the party was a long one.

Once I pushed the glass door open and stepped into the hall, I scanned the whole place. I wondered why there were so many young men in the gathering. I was supposed to be meeting a date at this party. Even so, I couldn't understand why I was getting the attention of everyone in the venue. My annoyance surged when I realized that I was the only female in the room. I could have invited Judy as well. But, she was too far away to attend the party.

Despite my discomfort, I flashed a smile and kept my head held high.

"Finally, the star of the welcome back party is finally here," the MC, who was also a male, stated, gesturing at me to climb onto the podium.

More confusion stirred up within me. I'd believed that this was an ordinary party that I'd been invited to. Why the hell didn't my father tell me that he had organized a welcome back party for me? Was he messing with me?

A few males offered me their arms to assist me in ascending the platform, but I politely declined. Then I made my way to the podium. The MC handed the microphone over to me, his fingers brushing against my hand in a not-so-subtle-way.

"Thank you all for attending this party. I want to also thank my father for organizing such a surprise to celebrate my return. It's good to be back after so many years. Cheers!" I said.

"Cheers!" the men echoed, raising their glasses of champagne.

After descending from the podium, the MC took over.

Thirty minutes later, three men walked up to my table and sat down.

"You look exceptionally gorgeous," one of them said. I could smell his alpha pheromones, it made me sick to my stomach.

The other men were watching me with lust in their eyes. I kept getting the feeling that something was going on. Something I wasn't aware of.

One of the men placed a hand over mine, he was fairly good-looking. But I felt off about him.

"What do you say? Should we go somewhere more... private?" He asked, and I forced out a smile.

"I don't see why we should do that," I said, and he leaned closer to whisper in my ear.

"Don't be shy."

I clenched my fists, willing myself to be calm.

"Quiet, boys. You'll scare her away," the third alpha said. His grey eyes held a glimmer of mischief.

"Ignore their behaviour. My name is Stefan, I'm the Alpha of the Black Diamond Pack. I'll get straight to the point," he said, and I blinked.

"Okay?" I stated as I awaited what he was about to say.

"Marry me," he said.

I stared at him, bewildered.

"What?"

He shrugged.

"It is just as I said. I want you to marry me. I don't mind that you've been married before or that you were once rejected. You are a stunning woman," he said.

"That's it? You want to marry me because I'm a stunning woman?" I asked.

"What did you expect? It's not like you have any achievements that I know of," he stated.

At this point, I was past my limit. If he thought I would marry someone like him, he had to be insane.

"You know what? All of this is a mistake. I'm done. I'm leaving," I said, rising to my feet.

His gaze darkened, a shadow of fury falling over his features.

"What? That's it? You're just going to run?" He said, shooting to his feet.

"Didn't you hear me? I should never have come here," I said, turning away from him.

He went after me, hot on my heels. I quickened my pace as I headed towards the elevator.

"Don't walk away while I'm talking to you," he growled, grabbing me by the wrist.

While I attempted to yank my arm out of his grip, he raised an arm to hit me. I stiffened, lowering my gaze as I prepared myself to defend myself.

However, the impact never came. A different pair of black shoes stepped into my line of vision, and I looked up, my gaze clashing with a pair of familiar amber eyes.

He had a tight grip on the other Alpha's arm. He yanked hard, and a loud crack filled the air, followed by the Alpha's scream as he crumbled to the ground.

I dug my fingernails into my palm, my stomach tightening.

What the hell is he doing here? I thought as I stared at the newcomer.

Surely, he wasn't invited to the party as well, was he?

His intense gaze roamed over my face, a mix of both confusion and rage stirring in his eyes.

"Raelynn," he said, his deep voice bringing back memories I'd desperately tried to bury.

"Rai," I said through gritted teeth, our gazes locked.

RAIFew minutes ago, "Did you hear?" My younger sister asked, her voice tinged with excitement. It was quite rare for her to call me out of the blue. She knew I wasn't one to listen to gossip, either. It made me wonder why she was really doing this. "Izzy, can we talk later? I have a business to attend to," I said, unable to hide my growing irritation."Just hear me out. You remember Raelynn, don't you?" She said, and I swear, my heart stopped beating for a moment. I'd heard of her death a few years before. Hearing my sister say her name worsened my already sour mood. "I'm hanging up-""She's alive!"I froze, every cell in my body freezing over. "What?" I breathed. "She's not dead. She returned to her family home not too long ago. Isn't that great?" She said.I swallowed hard, relief sinking into me. Only now do I realize that I'd felt responsible for her death, even though I had nothing to do with it. "I know that you miss her. I saw you that night, gazing at her photo,"

RAELYNN I was fuming as I drove to my childhood home. Everything that had happened earlier kept replaying itself in my head like a nightmare stuck on repeat. Although I'd expected foul play of some kind, the party had been more terrible than I'd imagined. What's worse is that Rai had shown up.He was the last person I'd expected to see, and yet, my heart had gone out of control the moment I'd seen him. All that pain and grief I'd chosen to bury had swelled to the surface.Tightening my grip on the steering wheel, I took a deep breath and willed myself to be calm.Even so, I couldn't shake off my emotions. I could still remember the way he'd looked at me. He didn't seem to have changed much. His hair was a little longer than usual, and there was a different sharpness in his stare. On arriving at the house, I stormed into my room to pack up my things.I heard the door creak open, but refused to pay attention to whoever had just walked in."Rae, what's wrong? RAI I stared at the several messages I hadn't bothered to read until now. Raelynn had sent a ton of them five years ago. She must have been desperate. I was curious. How had she managed to stay hidden for all these years and why did she have to fake her death? Heaving a sigh, I closed my eyes and leaned back on my study. Right then, there was a knock on the door. "Come in," I said, opening my eyes. Austin, my Beta strode in with a grim expression on his face. "Did you find anything?" I asked and he heaved a sigh. "Honestly, not much. Raelynn has lived like a ghost for the past five years," he said and I frowned as I mulled over his words."There has to be someone behind her. Someone who is capable of wiping her records," I said. "I'll keep looking," Austin affirmed and I sighed, rubbing my temples. "I understand that you're curious but she's no longer your wife, you know that, don't you?" He continued and I gave him a blank stare. "I'm aware of that. You don't have to tel

RAELYNN Bumping into him along the hallway had set my nerves on fire. Rai had dared to ask me why I was at a hotel. We were nothing to each other now. Nonetheless, my blood kept heating up each time we encountered each other. Even now, while he was still out of it, he still possessed the ability to piss me off. I hated the fact that I felt concern for him while he sat on the floor looking dazed."I found you on the floor. You were not breathing. I had to perform a CPR on you," I said, trying not to cringe at the memory of my lips touching his."What?" His eyes widened."It looks like you have a fever too," I pointed out and he blinked, failing when he attempted to stand up. I sighed, annoyance bubbling inside of me. Why wouldn't he sit still? He winced and I bit my lower lip, noticing the way sweat dripped down the sides of his face.I held out a hand to touch his forehead, my frown deepening. He was burning up. RAELYNN Rai heaved an exasperated sigh and sank into his chair. He stared at me for a moment, his face emotionless. "Fine. We have a deal," he said and I held out a hand for a handshake. His gaze lingered on my outstretched hand before he accepted my handshake. When our gazes met again, my breath hitched in my throat. Rai had the kind of gaze that never ceased to make me uncomfortable. He'd always had such beautiful amber eyes which used to light up whenever he smiled. But, at the moment, those eyes were cold and empty. I had never seen him look so soulless. It seemed to me that he'd changed as much as I had. Refusing to have him notice my discomfort, I pulled away from him and returned to my seat. "How long has it been?" He asked, leaning back on his seat. "I've been a healer for three years," I told him and he merely blinked. "You don't even have a normal wolf," he spat and I narrowed my eyes at him, offended. It was true that I didn't have a wolf of my own. Nonethel

He was there that day," I stated and he went pale."That's not possible. He was not invited--""It doesn't matter now. What matters is the fact that Alpha Rai was the one who protected me from Alpha Stefan," I continued. "You're such a good liar. You almost made me believe your ridiculous story," Maurice said."Please, Rae. Don't turn your back on us. We can't stay in debt like this," my father pleaded."If you're so adamant on repaying your debt, you can still do so. I'm not the only daughter you have. You can marry Caroline off to Alpha Stefan. RAI "Forgive me, Alpha Rai. I just thought it was the right thing to do," the Omega who knelt at my feet pleaded, her head bowed. I stared at her in disgust. The emotions surging through me was slowly becoming a massive wave. A part of me had always thought of the possibility that Raelynn was not guilty of the offence I'd accused her of. But when this situation smacked me in the face, it left me feeling like a mess. I looked up at the sound of the knock on the door, my stomach tightening. It must be her, I thought as I moved away from the omega and sank into my seat, trying not to show how stressed I was. "Come in," I said and the door jerked open. Raelynn stormed in, accompanied by the sound of her stilettos hitting the floor. She paused when she saw the woman kneeling by my desk. Then, she narrowed her eyes, her brows creasing up."You told me you found the culprit," she hissed, her tone laced with annoyance. "I did," I confirmed and she approached me, placing her handba

RAELYNN "There have been new cases of the infected in the past twenty-four hours. There's a high chance that one of us is infected right now," Austin, Rai's beta said from his position by the door of my office. "What do you think, Alpha Rai?" I said, folding my arms across my chest.Rai leaned back on his seat, his face stoic. "If anyone is infected, it's most likely Austin," he said and his beta scoffed. "Have you learnt anything new about the infection?" Rai asked, his voice tight with tension. Anyone who saw us seated in my office would sense the edge cutting tension swirling around us. I had expected this, especially after the words we'd exchanged the day before, in his study. It was clear that we both planned to pretend that we were unaffected by each other's presence. But this was my office. My territory. If anyone was going to be uncomfortable, it had to be Rai. Even so, he was pretty good at keeping his features blank. "The illness has different stages. RAELYNN I clenched my fists as I watched Rai head towards the staircase. He was trying so hard to pretend that he was perfectly fine but I could see right through him. He seemed to have forgotten about the fact that I was a doctor. Every slight tremor that racked his body was a sign that he wasn't feeling well. With my senses in hypermode, I could even detect the strain in his breathing. I waited patiently, hoping he would eventually cave in, and turn around to confess the severity of his condition. Instead, he continued to push forward. Angry tears clouded my eyes. Did he not trust me? Why wasn't he saying anything? I wondered, my insides twisting up into angry knots. "Stop," I droned, my patience wearing thin. His muscles stiffened with tension when he halted. Slowly, he turned around to look at me. My heart sank when I saw how bloodshot his eyes were. He probably didn't know about it. "It's no use hiding it. I can...I can tell..." I blurted out, my voice quivering."Yo

RAI Few Hours Ago, "You're late," Nadia said as I sat down beside her in a dimly lit bar. She was wearing a mini black dress tonight with her long hair pulled back into a high ponytail. I glanced around, but found that we were the only ones in the bar apart from the bartender. Nadia must have rented the bar for the night. "Well, I'm here now, aren't I?" I said and she reached out to take hold of my hand, gazing into my eyes with a stifling intensity. I knew she was casting a spell on me. I felt it build up inside of me, lashing against my strong will like a stubborn wave. Eventually, she eased up on me and leaned in to plant a kiss on my cheek. "Did you meet her today?" She asked and the spell swelled to the surface, attempting to stop me from lying to Nadia. However, my will was stronger. Refusing to show the pain it was causing me, I kept my expression schooled and downed a glass of tequila. "I have better things to do. She doesn't deserve my time," I drone

Knowing that Rose had approached me on purpose and had lingered around me right up until this moment made me pissed. I concluded that she was involved in something shady. Since I didn't know exactly what her deal was, I was even more pissed. "Go straight to the point, Rose. No, wait. Is Rose even your real name?" I hissed and she grimaced."I never lied to you about my name," she said and I hissed at her, annoyed."How am I supposed to believe that?" I demanded. Rai grabbed my hand, entwining my fingers with his. When I looked up to meet his perturbed gaze, my frown faded. "I'll tell you everything but we can't talk right here. RAI Five Years Ago, I stormed into my bedroom and paused in the centre of the room, freezing as a familiar scent wafted into my nostrils. Raelynn's scent. It was all over the place. It reminded me of the brutal decision I'd made a couple of hours ago. I closed my eyes, and all I could see was her tear-filled eyes. I rubbed at my chest, willing the ache to fade away. The door creaked open and Nadia sashayed in, butt naked. There was a glass of wine in her hand. She swayed her hips from side to side and joined me on the bed, gulping down her wine at once. I sat up slowly, my body feeling heavy. "You did the right thing, you know? I'm so proud of you for not letting her walk over you," she said, bringing her lips to mine. I closed my eyes and was once again, reminded that she didn't taste like Raelynn."I want you," she whispered in between kisses, fumbling with the buttons of my shirt. I was drunk, but it wasn't enough to drown out the guilt that was raging inside of

RAELYNN "Come on, let's go. Can you run?" He asked softly. Steeling my resolve, I nodded once. Together, we both hurried away from the building. There was a black SUV waiting by the corner. When we got to it, Hunter opened the door of the car and I sat down on the passenger seat. He joined me shortly after, settling down on the driver's seat. A lump formed in my throat as he manoeuvred the car out of the parking space, my gaze resting on Rai who had suddenly run into the side walk, his chest heaving. Looking away from him, I folded my arms across my chest and leaned back on my seat. "Hold on, okay? I'll get you out of here soon enough," Hunter said and I released an exasperated sigh. For a few seconds, a thought crossed my mind. Was I really doing the right thing? It wasn't okay to just walk away from the chaos but I couldn't help it, I valued my own peace of mind. "Are you alright?" Hunter asked when we were a good distance away from the paparazzi. "I'm fine," I muttered,

RAELYNN When Rai showed up in the dining room with a worried look on his face, I knew that something was up. At this point, it felt like a never-ending saga. He sat down on a chair and the kids greeted him with cheery voices. He beamed at them, his gaze softening. He was such a natural when it boiled down to interacting with our kids. Moving over to his side, I placed a hand on his shoulder and leaned closer to him. "Did something happen?" I asked and he flashed me a tight smile. My heart sank. Whatever had happened seemed to be far worse than I'd imagined. "I got a call from Jared--" he was interrupted by the sound of my ringing phone and I glanced at it, puzzled."It's probably a call from the medical centre," he told me and I grabbed my phone from the table. The more I tried to fight the spell, the more it's grip on me tightened. Suddenly, Raelynn stopped struggling. Then she reached out to touch my face, her teary eyed gaze meeting mine. "It's okay. I could hear Raelynn coughing behind me, struggling to catch her breath. My chest tightened, angry tears pricking my eyes. 'Kill her!' An angry screech invaded my senses, sending a jolt of pain through my skull. 'Damn you,' I thought, doubling over as the pain worsened."Rai?" Raelynn said as she approached me. Pulling away from him, I buried my face in the crook of his neck and pressed a kiss there. Letting out a guttural growl, he grabbed my free hand and brought it to his crotch. "Look what you do to me, woman.” He groaned. Knowing that I had that much effect on him made me feel powerful. I could feel my wolf pushing to the surface, my fangs making an appearance. Rai let out a deeper groan when I ran my fangs over his skin and swiped my tongue over the spot. "Do you smell something burning?"
