RAELYNN
A year ago, I discovered that Rai Vidal, the man I'd had a crush on for the longest time, was my fated mate. My father had been overjoyed because being mated to Alpha Rai would mean that I was to become Luna of one of the strongest packs. However, what he didn't know was that Rai didn't want me. He was in love with Nadia who was not ready to settle down for marriage.
Since he didn't want to taint his reputation, he made me sign a contract with him in secret. I was to become his contract wife until Nadia became his wife. It was stupid.
Even so, for the sake of my father, for the sake of the feelings I had towards him, I agreed to it. A part of me had believed that I would succeed in winning Rai's heart.
Yet there I was, standing in front of my childhood home. I'd just been stabbed in the back by both my father and my husband.
"You don't mean that--" I started to say, tears blurring my vision. Before I could say anything else, my father slapped me across the face. It stung. But somehow, the pain in my chest was more intense.
"How shameless of you to drag your pathetic self all the way here," I heard my stepmother say as she stepped out of the house with Caroline, my stepsister.
"Why don't you crawl back to your husband?" Caroline drawled, and I lowered my head, feeling crushed.
I should've known that they would revel in my misery. They had been unhappy when they'd first heard that I was Rai's fated mate. Nonetheless, I hadn't expected such a cold treatment from my father.
"Dad, it's all a misunderstanding. What you heard isn't true--"
My father cut me off with a grim expression on his face.
"You are no longer my daughter. I have nothing more to say to you," he spat.
I watched in horror as he turned away from me and started to head inside the house.
"Maurice. Caroline. Get in here and shut the door," my father deadpanned and entered the house.
I felt my chest tighten, my airway constricting.
"Good luck with surviving as a rogue. You have no pack now, you know that, don't you?" Caroline said with a smirk. Then she followed her mother into the house and slammed the door shut.
I flinched, and thunder rumbled in the sky. Gazing at the stormy clouds, more tears welled up in my eyes. All my life, I've never been truly happy. At this point, I was at my worst.
While I stood there, wallowing in my misery, my phone rang. Relief sank into me when I saw that it was Judy who was calling. When I picked up the call, she sounded so concerned, it brought me a bit of relief.
"Come over. Don't worry about anything else. Just come to me," she said.
Without hesitating, I took a taxi and headed to her home downtown.
Judy was supportive and kind. She slept in the same room with me to make sure I didn't feel abandoned. She was such a sweetheart.
...
I stared at the text I'd typed on my phone, my finger hovering over the 'send' button. My stomach churned as nausea swept through me for the umpteenth time today.
Placing my phone by the sink, I rushed to the toilet bowl and heaved, wincing as I emptied my stomach's contents.
Struggling to my feet, I got rid of the mess and stumbled to the sink to rinse my mouth.
Splashing cold water on my face, I straightened in front of the sink and stared at my pale face. I inhaled deeply as I brought a hand to the slight budge in my stomach. I'd refused to believe it before, but the number of times I'd thrown up recently was rather alarming.
Tears clouded my eyes as I acknowledged the new life growing inside of me.
I was pregnant.
Three months had passed since Rai rejected me. Deciding not to burden Judy, I'd moved to the city to settle down.
A part of me wanted to let Rai know about the baby. Even so, I couldn't bring myself to.
"Lynn? Are you alright in there?" I heard my boss ask from outside the door of the restroom.
"I'll be out in a jiffy," I said, grabbing some wipes.
After cleaning myself up, I stepped out of the restroom to see Mandy, my boss, standing by the counter. She owned the cake shop where I worked.
"You can go home. It's been a busy day," she said, and I flashed her a grateful smile.
"Thank you, Mandy."
"It's alright. Go get some rest, okay?"
I nodded, proceeding to pack up my things.
"Goodnight, Mandy," I said, and she waved at me.
As I headed out of the cake shop, I pulled my jacket tighter around my body. The hair on the back of my neck suddenly stood stiff.
I could sense that I was being watched.
Hurrying down the street, I glanced behind me for signs of a stalker but saw no one.
The night sky was almost starless, and an aura of foreboding hung heavy in the air.
The moment I stepped into an alley, the sounds of aggressive growls reached my ears, and my blood ran cold in my veins.
My heart pounded erratically against my rib cage as I quickened my pace. The alley was dark and quiet. Therefore, I had a very low chance of getting help.
It didn't help that I was terribly aware of the wolves tailing me. I brought a trembling hand to my stomach, afraid for my baby's life. The growls grew louder and more menacing. I was not as strong or as fast as a regular wolf.
I knew this, but I refused to stop moving.
As the wolves grew closer, I broke into a sprint, my breathing coming out in short, strained pants.
I cried out in horror as more wolves appeared along the path. One of them pounced on me, and I crashed to the ground, cradling my stomach as pain speared through my lower back. Through blurry vision, I saw some of the wolves as they shifted into their human forms.
Black spots clouded my vision as they came closer, their eyes glowing with hostility.
"Alpha Rai wants her gone..." One of them said.
My consciousness started to fade, and I parted my lips to scream for help, but I was too weak to let out anything louder than a whimper.
Right before I could sink into oblivion, I heard the sound of heavy footsteps and a monstrous growl that sent shivers down my spine.
"Shit. It's a Lycan," I heard one of the wolves say.
The sound of snapping bones filled the air. A scream followed shortly after, and I right before I passed out, I pleaded to the moon goddess to help me survive this. I swore that I would grow stronger.
FIVE YEARS LATER,RAELYNN "Doctor Lynn, your phone has been ringing since you entered the surgical room," Rose, my assistant, said to me as soon as I stepped into my office."An unknown number?" I asked, and she nodded. "It's quite strange. This person has called you twenty-six times already. Maybe an ex?" I chuckled, accepting the phone she held out to me. I had a feeling that the caller was no other person than my father. It was just about time. After the incident, five years ago, I faked my death and stayed in the region dominated by Lycans, with the man who had rescued me from what could have been my death. Only recently did I pull some strings to get my father to know that I was still alive. While in my grip, my phone rang out. The call was from an unknown number. "You can go now. Thank you, Rose," I said to my assistant, and she nodded before walking out of my office. Sinking into my seat, I picked up the call and brought the phone to my ear. "Raelynn, it's me. Yo
RAELYNN "Is everything going fine over there?" Klaus asked. I could sense his concern through the phone. Despite the fact that he was the Lycan king, we were like family."He wants me to go on a blind date, except...it doesn't seem like a mere blind date. According to him, I'm supposed to meet my date at a party," I said, and Klaus frowned at me, his green eyes clouding up with distrust."That does sound off. What are you going to do?" He said."I made up my mind already," I told him, and he raised a brow."And that is?""I'll attend the party. I need to know what is really going on," I said to him, and he sighed."Please be careful. I do not like this. But, I'll let you do what you want. You're a grown woman after all," He stated, and I grinned at him."Thanks, Klaus. What about my little princesses? How are they doing?" I asked, and he chuckled."They were both asleep an hour ago. They both just barged into my room. It's as though they could sense---""Is that mummy on the ph
RAIFew minutes ago, "Did you hear?" My younger sister asked, her voice tinged with excitement. It was quite rare for her to call me out of the blue. She knew I wasn't one to listen to gossip, either. It made me wonder why she was really doing this. "Izzy, can we talk later? I have a business to attend to," I said, unable to hide my growing irritation."Just hear me out. You remember Raelynn, don't you?" She said, and I swear, my heart stopped beating for a moment. I'd heard of her death a few years before. Hearing my sister say her name worsened my already sour mood. "I'm hanging up-""She's alive!"I froze, every cell in my body freezing over. "What?" I breathed. "She's not dead. She returned to her family home not too long ago. Isn't that great?" She said.I swallowed hard, relief sinking into me. Only now do I realize that I'd felt responsible for her death, even though I had nothing to do with it. "I know that you miss her. I saw you that night, gazing at her photo,"
RAELYNN I was fuming as I drove to my childhood home. Everything that had happened earlier kept replaying itself in my head like a nightmare stuck on repeat. Although I'd expected foul play of some kind, the party had been more terrible than I'd imagined. What's worse is that Rai had shown up.He was the last person I'd expected to see, and yet, my heart had gone out of control the moment I'd seen him. All that pain and grief I'd chosen to bury had swelled to the surface.Tightening my grip on the steering wheel, I took a deep breath and willed myself to be calm.Even so, I couldn't shake off my emotions. I could still remember the way he'd looked at me. He didn't seem to have changed much. His hair was a little longer than usual, and there was a different sharpness in his stare. On arriving at the house, I stormed into my room to pack up my things.I heard the door creak open, but refused to pay attention to whoever had just walked in."Rae, what's wrong? Won't you st
RAI I stared at the several messages I hadn't bothered to read until now. Raelynn had sent a ton of them five years ago. She must have been desperate. I was curious. How had she managed to stay hidden for all these years and why did she have to fake her death? Heaving a sigh, I closed my eyes and leaned back on my study. Right then, there was a knock on the door. "Come in," I said, opening my eyes. Austin, my Beta strode in with a grim expression on his face. "Did you find anything?" I asked and he heaved a sigh. "Honestly, not much. Raelynn has lived like a ghost for the past five years," he said and I frowned as I mulled over his words."There has to be someone behind her. Someone who is capable of wiping her records," I said. "I'll keep looking," Austin affirmed and I sighed, rubbing my temples. "I understand that you're curious but she's no longer your wife, you know that, don't you?" He continued and I gave him a blank stare. "I'm aware of that. You don't have to tel
RAELYNN Bumping into him along the hallway had set my nerves on fire. Rai had dared to ask me why I was at a hotel. We were nothing to each other now. Nonetheless, my blood kept heating up each time we encountered each other. Even now, while he was still out of it, he still possessed the ability to piss me off. I hated the fact that I felt concern for him while he sat on the floor looking dazed."I found you on the floor. You were not breathing. I had to perform a CPR on you," I said, trying not to cringe at the memory of my lips touching his."What?" His eyes widened."It looks like you have a fever too," I pointed out and he blinked, failing when he attempted to stand up. I sighed, annoyance bubbling inside of me. Why wouldn't he sit still? He winced and I bit my lower lip, noticing the way sweat dripped down the sides of his face.I held out a hand to touch his forehead, my frown deepening. He was burning up. "I know. I had no choice either. Since when did it begin?" I
RAELYNN Rai heaved an exasperated sigh and sank into his chair. He stared at me for a moment, his face emotionless. "Fine. We have a deal," he said and I held out a hand for a handshake. His gaze lingered on my outstretched hand before he accepted my handshake. When our gazes met again, my breath hitched in my throat. Rai had the kind of gaze that never ceased to make me uncomfortable. He'd always had such beautiful amber eyes which used to light up whenever he smiled. But, at the moment, those eyes were cold and empty. I had never seen him look so soulless. It seemed to me that he'd changed as much as I had. Refusing to have him notice my discomfort, I pulled away from him and returned to my seat. "How long has it been?" He asked, leaning back on his seat. "I've been a healer for three years," I told him and he merely blinked. "You don't even have a normal wolf," he spat and I narrowed my eyes at him, offended. It was true that I didn't have a wolf of my own. Nonethel
RAELYNN "Alpha Rai wants you back?" my father said, his voice laced with disbelief. "You saw us together at the medical centre, didn't you?" I said and he frowned."You said it was for pack business," he stressed, his frown deepening."Alpha Rai knows about what Stefan tried to do to me. He was there that day," I stated and he went pale."That's not possible. He was not invited--""It doesn't matter now. What matters is the fact that Alpha Rai was the one who protected me from Alpha Stefan," I continued. "You're such a good liar. You almost made me believe your ridiculous story," Maurice said."Please, Rae. Don't turn your back on us. We can't stay in debt like this," my father pleaded."If you're so adamant on repaying your debt, you can still do so. I'm not the only daughter you have. You can marry Caroline off to Alpha Stefan. They will make such a perfect match," I said and Maurice stormed towards me, lifting her hand in a bid to slap me. However, before she could actual
RAELYNN I clenched my fists as I watched Rai head towards the staircase. He was trying so hard to pretend that he was perfectly fine but I could see right through him. He seemed to have forgotten about the fact that I was a doctor. Every slight tremor that racked his body was a sign that he wasn't feeling well. With my senses in hypermode, I could even detect the strain in his breathing. I waited patiently, hoping he would eventually cave in, and turn around to confess the severity of his condition. Instead, he continued to push forward. Angry tears clouded my eyes. Did he not trust me? Why wasn't he saying anything? I wondered, my insides twisting up into angry knots. "Stop," I droned, my patience wearing thin. His muscles stiffened with tension when he halted. Slowly, he turned around to look at me. My heart sank when I saw how bloodshot his eyes were. He probably didn't know about it. "It's no use hiding it. I can...I can tell..." I blurted out, my voice quivering."Yo
RAI Few Hours Ago, "You're late," Nadia said as I sat down beside her in a dimly lit bar. She was wearing a mini black dress tonight with her long hair pulled back into a high ponytail. I glanced around, but found that we were the only ones in the bar apart from the bartender. Nadia must have rented the bar for the night. "Well, I'm here now, aren't I?" I said and she reached out to take hold of my hand, gazing into my eyes with a stifling intensity. I knew she was casting a spell on me. I felt it build up inside of me, lashing against my strong will like a stubborn wave. Eventually, she eased up on me and leaned in to plant a kiss on my cheek. "Did you meet her today?" She asked and the spell swelled to the surface, attempting to stop me from lying to Nadia. However, my will was stronger. Refusing to show the pain it was causing me, I kept my expression schooled and downed a glass of tequila. "I have better things to do. She doesn't deserve my time," I drone
RAELYNN Power pulsed inside of me, clouding my senses. I had never felt my wolf so strongly. It was exhilarating. Knowing that Rose had approached me on purpose and had lingered around me right up until this moment made me pissed. I concluded that she was involved in something shady. Since I didn't know exactly what her deal was, I was even more pissed. "Go straight to the point, Rose. No, wait. Is Rose even your real name?" I hissed and she grimaced."I never lied to you about my name," she said and I hissed at her, annoyed."How am I supposed to believe that?" I demanded. Rai grabbed my hand, entwining my fingers with his. When I looked up to meet his perturbed gaze, my frown faded. "I'll tell you everything but we can't talk right here. Your enemies might be listening in on us right now," Rose said and I sighed, bringing my free hand to my temple."Let's go in," Rai suggested and I glanced at him, instantly recalling that he was supposed to meet up with Nadia. "I can
RAI Five Years Ago, I stormed into my bedroom and paused in the centre of the room, freezing as a familiar scent wafted into my nostrils. Raelynn's scent. It was all over the place. It reminded me of the brutal decision I'd made a couple of hours ago. I closed my eyes, and all I could see was her tear-filled eyes. I rubbed at my chest, willing the ache to fade away. The door creaked open and Nadia sashayed in, butt naked. There was a glass of wine in her hand. She swayed her hips from side to side and joined me on the bed, gulping down her wine at once. I sat up slowly, my body feeling heavy. "You did the right thing, you know? I'm so proud of you for not letting her walk over you," she said, bringing her lips to mine. I closed my eyes and was once again, reminded that she didn't taste like Raelynn."I want you," she whispered in between kisses, fumbling with the buttons of my shirt. I was drunk, but it wasn't enough to drown out the guilt that was raging inside of
RAELYNN "Come on, let's go. Can you run?" He asked softly. Steeling my resolve, I nodded once. Together, we both hurried away from the building. There was a black SUV waiting by the corner. When we got to it, Hunter opened the door of the car and I sat down on the passenger seat. He joined me shortly after, settling down on the driver's seat. A lump formed in my throat as he manoeuvred the car out of the parking space, my gaze resting on Rai who had suddenly run into the side walk, his chest heaving. Looking away from him, I folded my arms across my chest and leaned back on my seat. "Hold on, okay? I'll get you out of here soon enough," Hunter said and I released an exasperated sigh. For a few seconds, a thought crossed my mind. Was I really doing the right thing? It wasn't okay to just walk away from the chaos but I couldn't help it, I valued my own peace of mind. "Are you alright?" Hunter asked when we were a good distance away from the paparazzi. "I'm fine," I muttered,
RAELYNN When Rai showed up in the dining room with a worried look on his face, I knew that something was up. At this point, it felt like a never-ending saga. He sat down on a chair and the kids greeted him with cheery voices. He beamed at them, his gaze softening. He was such a natural when it boiled down to interacting with our kids. Moving over to his side, I placed a hand on his shoulder and leaned closer to him. "Did something happen?" I asked and he flashed me a tight smile. My heart sank. Whatever had happened seemed to be far worse than I'd imagined. "I got a call from Jared--" he was interrupted by the sound of my ringing phone and I glanced at it, puzzled."It's probably a call from the medical centre," he told me and I grabbed my phone from the table. Rai was right. It was a call from Rose. Swiftly picking up the call, I lifted the phone to my ear. I could hear the wailing of sirens through the phone."Doctor Lynn, it's me, Rose," my assistant said, her voice qu
RAI Every single fibre of my being wrestled for control over the spell that had kept my mind captive. It killed me to watch Raelynn's beautiful eyes fill up with tears and terror. The more I tried to fight the spell, the more it's grip on me tightened. Suddenly, Raelynn stopped struggling. Then she reached out to touch my face, her teary eyed gaze meeting mine. "It's okay. I won't hold this against you," she choked out and I pulled away from her, stumbling across the kitchen to slam a hand on the wall. I could hear Raelynn coughing behind me, struggling to catch her breath. My chest tightened, angry tears pricking my eyes. 'Kill her!' An angry screech invaded my senses, sending a jolt of pain through my skull. 'Damn you,' I thought, doubling over as the pain worsened."Rai?" Raelynn said as she approached me. I shook my head frantically, mentally pleading for her to maintain a good distance from me. When she continued to approach, I knew I needed to leave. However, before
RAELYNN "Mum... w-what's going on? Am I...dead?" I croaked, terror gripping me. "You're not dead, silly. You're just detached from your physical form," she responded and I sighed. "Rai doesn't know that. He looks terrified," I pointed out, feeling sorry for Rai who held on to my limp form in horror. "He'll figure it out," my mum said. "This strange blue light has a lot to do with my magic, doesn't it?" I asked her and she nodded."It's why I asked you to accept it. Become one with it. That way, it can't be stolen from you," she said and my eyes went wide. "Stolen? What do you mean?""There is a reason why you're destined to be Rai's partner. He's meant to complete you," she said.I blinked as she placed her hands on my shoulders and looked into my eyes. "Listen to me clearly, you must not let go..." Her voice faded and she also faded out of sight. Struck with urgency, I called out for her but got no response. Instead, I was sucked back into my body. I opened my eyes slowl
RAELYNN "I want to claim you, Rai," I whisperered. "Can I?""Right here?" He rasped, his eyes darkening with lust. I smirked, leaning up to kiss him on the lips. Cupping the back of his head, I deepened our kiss and scratched his scalp gently. A moan escaped his lips and he tightened his grip on my waist. Pulling away from him, I buried my face in the crook of his neck and pressed a kiss there. Letting out a guttural growl, he grabbed my free hand and brought it to his crotch. "Look what you do to me, woman.” He groaned. Knowing that I had that much effect on him made me feel powerful. I could feel my wolf pushing to the surface, my fangs making an appearance. Rai let out a deeper groan when I ran my fangs over his skin and swiped my tongue over the spot. "Do you smell something burning?" Rai suddenly commented and I frowned, pulling away to sniff at the air. And sure enough, the food was burning.Alarmed, Rai turned off the cooker and grimaced at me."This is all your
