In a werewolf country cursed to be forever cold, Evadne wished under the full moon for many years to find her mate and escape from her hell of a home where her father, Alpha Marcus of the Moonflame Pack, and Elodie, Evadne’s sister, constantly made sure her day won’t end without her being bullied or beaten by them. When she finally turned eighteen years old, Evadne find her mate, Alpha Gregor of the Fireheart Pack. She promised him that she would be the best mate and Luna for him. However, Elodie reveals he’s her fiance and boyfriend and begs the Alpha to ruthlessly reject her in front of the whole Moonflame Pack at Evadne’s very own birthday party. Evadne’s heart became even more shattered when her father banished her and ordered her to never return to their lives when she humiliated his favorite daughter, Elodie, on that same night. Alone, she was imprisoned in the dungeons of a pack that thought she was a Rogue—when it was attacked by the Alpha King’s forces since the said pack was the only remaining one who refused to bow down to him. As she tried to escape the ensuing chaos, she met him, and never had she thought that the Moon Goddess would let her second-chance mate be Alpha King Kallias himself—the cause of the eternal winter and now the most feared Alpha.

I held my chin high. “You may be the Alpha’s favorite daughter but I’m an Alpha’s daughter nonetheless—even when that said Alpha also despises me.” I threw my father a knowing glance. He narrowed his eyes at me.
“ENOUGH!” A voice that rattled the glasses entered our arising drama.
I almost forgot the fact that wherever Elodie is, Alpha Gregor is always there. Of course, he’ll be in the Alpha ball; he’s the Alpha of the Fireheart Pack, not to mention he’s Elodie’s fiancé.
“Oh hi, Alpha Gregor. Or should I say, good evening to you 'my mate who rejected me'.” I fluttered my eyelashes at him and paired it with a sickly sweet smile.
“You’ve been stalking me, aren’t you?” The Alpha clicked his tongue and crossed his arms. “That's why you're here, Evadne. You're obsessed with me. The likes of you never understand that no one in this world wants you.”
I narrowed my eyes at his accusation. He only devilishly grinned and ran a hand on his hair.
“You’re free to throw whatever insult at me, Greg. I don’t care.” I sneered, “I no longer even think of you nor the fact that you still exist.”
“Whatever you do, you’ll never have me back.” He said with unabashed pride.
“And why would I want spoiled goods returned to me?” I countered, flipping my unbound hair. Elodie and Alpha Marcus of the Moonflame Pack, my father, growled behind me in warning. “I’m stronger now, Alpha Gregor. Why would I want the prince when I can have the king?”
His mouth quirked to the side, ignoring the truth I just hurled at him. “Only Elodie is strong enough to be my Luna, Eva. She’s always the stronger and you’re always the one to be easily crushed.”
Elodie and Alpha Marcus giggled behind me, lifting their wine glasses in cheers. Everybody now stopped to stare and watch us. Even the heavenly music ceased and is now replaced with the guests' intense gaze.
This year's Alpha Winter Ball is going to be much more...entertaining.
“If what you say is true, then why not try crushing me here and now?” I challenged him. “Surely the Alphas and Lunas won’t mind being entertained by your fragile hands tonight, Alpha Gregor.” I gestured to the people around us.
Wicked delight gleamed in those green eyes as if he had always hoped this moment would come—the time when he could show how embarrassed he was to have me as a mate. Or former mate, for that matter. To show everyone why he rejected me and he deserved someone stronger.
Well, I’m no longer the weak and battered Evadne. I now belong to the Alpha King even—if our hearts refused to cooperate.
“Fine, bitch. Just don’t come crying at me again to save you.” Then Alpha Gregor lunged for me with his signature attack but I, as being trained by the Alpha King’s pack...he didn’t expect that I was faster than him now.
My hands wrapped on his wrist. His eyes widened at my speed. I didn’t waste any time and snapped it once.
He yelled in pain as soon as the sound of his bones crunching reverberated. I stomped on his foot and smashed his toe without remorse.
“Who's the one easily crushed now?” I let my sarcastic tone echo deep in his bones. “Your unfaithfulness deserves to be rewarded. But don’t worry, I’ll let you walk out of this Alpha Winter Ball with enough bones to bury on your grave.”
My former mate threw a punch using his other unbroken hand. It hit my shoulder. I stumbled backward for a heartbeat and stifled a cry of pain. In retaliation, I attacked his groin with a mighty kick and it sent him on the ground a few feet from where I was, holding on to the thing between his legs.
It seems he won't be able to use that favorite part of his for a few days.
I smirked. Everyone murmured and whispered at my much more powerful aura now. I was exuding predatorial grace with ease just like Alpha Kallias.
I glanced behind me and Elodie and Marcus were only watching me intently as if gathering their strength and waiting for the right time to come and meet my fist.
“You're doing great,” Mara praised.
Alpha Gregor chuckled. The bastard still stands. “Is that all you can brag? You must really be upset that I rejected you in front of the whole Moonflame Pack that you beat the shit out of me now in front of an audience.”
“Maybe I should thank you, Alpha Gregor,” I cooed. “If you did not reject me, I'll never meet my second-chance mate, which by the way, is stronger and more powerful than any of you.”
The eyes of the Alphas and Lunas widened. “Only the Alpha King is more powerful than any of us,” said one of them, confusion evident on his face.
I tilted my head to the side. “Oh? Why, thank you for realizing that he is more powerful than any of you.”
Alpha Gregor wiped his tears with the back of his hand. He’s fucking crying, and I could’ve rolled on the ground laughing if he didn’t shot right to his feet, eager to strike at me again—
A shattering growl, like a thunder heralding its presence amid a winter storm, splintered the silence.
He always likes dramatic entrances. It was the same growl from that night when he saved me from the pack who chained me to the wall for being a Rogue.
“It’s the Alpha King!” one of the Alphas exclaimed. His face was alarmed by the King's sudden arrival.
Alpha King Kallias was in his signature silver and blue tuxedo. His hair was smoothened and combed appropriately as if the trace of Elise’s fingers earlier while kissing him had vanished.
One second, Alpha King Kallias was standing ten paces from mine. The next, his hand was now around Alpha Gregor’s neck and the poor Alpha didn’t even have time to draw breath as he began choking.
“She is mine,” Alpha Kallias growled. “SHE IS MINE!” My mate announced to all of them.
My second-chance mate threw a knowing glance in my direction. I returned it with a blush and bit my lower lip. “Thank you,” I mouthed the words voicelessly even though I knew he would never reciprocate my feelings.
A set of unannounced footsteps came rushing behind me. A very familiar male’s scent slapped the living daylights out of my soul. “It’s your father,” Mara, my wolf, whispered. And then, someone cleared their throat behind me. I thought it was one of the Alpha King’s guards sent to escort me away from this chaos. But I was met with a slap from a male’s hand as soon as I turned around.A pair of furious eyes and a flaring nose glared back at me. “Which part of my order as an Alpha to never return and show your face to either of us did you not understand?!”I stifled a cry and a gasp. I only stared at him with wide eyes as I clutched my reddened cheeks. “Father.”“Get out of here, Evadne.” His voice now drew more attention. More and more guests now turned to us. Of course, people always lend their ears to drama and gossip. Who wouldn’t?“You’re useless wolf only spoils the crowd of Alphas and Lunas!” Alpha Marcus grabbed my arm to drag me but my glove fell off instead. He looked at it and
Kallias didn’t see her. I didn’t bother to tell him either.I never want our first kiss to be like this. But Mara and a deep part of me was elated that our first kiss was like this: with a lone audience present, and that audience is none other than Beta Elise. His lips trembled as he kissed me once again. Even when he pulled away and a plume of icy mist escaped his lips as he exhaled, I can see that he’s somewhat...anxious. I lifted my gaze back to the corner, but Beta Elise is gone.I sighed in relief. Running my eyes at him from head to toe and said in a rather casual voice, “You absolutely know how to dress to impress, don’t you?”“I do.” He surveyed my look again. “So are you.”I swallowed. “I...impressed you?”He winked. The Alpha King really now feels comfortable around me, and it made me blush. “Let’s go?” he exhaled, his icy breath cooling my cheeks as he whispered.I smiled at him, one that I hope melts his frozen heart. “Let’s go.”***The venue of the Alpha Winter
I stood there, frozen. Never mind that the beautiful view of the sprawling frozen lake is at my side.Beta Elise's eyes are on me as she deepened the kiss. Kallias didn't seem to budge and I can't tell if he's just allowing her or he's waiting for the right moment to snap her neck.I blinked several times, hoping it was just an illusion. But my heart, my wolf, knew it wasn't. This was real. Ice seemed to form at the bottom of my feet as if the Alpha King, my mate—my fucking mate—willed his magic to keep me rooted in place. I narrowed my eyes at them, but then quickly schooled my features into neutrality. I’m just his mate. I am just a banished Alpha daughter while he’s the current reigning Alpha of all Alphas, ruler of all packs, and the king of winter. I shouldn’t be bothered if he’s kissing Elise or any females at this point. No love binds us anyway. No mutual feelings stretch between us other than the sole respect for the mating bond
“Now that’s how you fight, Luna Evadne.” Beta Caesar praised as soon as I held my ground, my breath caught.“That sparring fucking warmed my bones!” I replied, laughing like I hadn’t almost broken my arm.A female laugh echoed from behind me, accompanied by a series of clapping. “So glad you’re now confident with your strength, Luna.” Beta Geneva also winked. My cheeks heated, not because of the two Betas' compliments but because I am now content in my stay here in the Night Blood Pack that my body now adjusts to the cold and relishes it.That's my routine every morning since then: I train with Beta Caesar, the pups joining me. I don't know if it's because of their interest in learning physical combat as early as now or if they just want to see me fight and train against the harsh weather.I wiped the cold sweat on my brow, continuing to punch the dummy made from dried hay. I imagine it as my enemies—or perhaps a deeper part of me has imagined it as my father—as I pour out my anger wi
“What?” I swallowed. I only compelled myself to let my throat bobbed as a sign of reaction. It was a mere whisper of demanding him to ‘what the fuck does that mean’. He shrugged. “Just in case. For future uses,” and then he winked at me. The Alpha King found himself sitting near the fireplace, chilling. As if the whole weather outside is burning cold. The Omega seamstress and I just talked about the dress: how long I want it, the color, would I like them elegant and sensual or sexy and provoking. All throughout, Kal just looked at us—looked at me. Studying me, drinking in every inch of me and the way I stand or speak to the Omega and how I slouch and straighten my back. Kal is so...complicated. So complex for an Alpha King.Or perhaps all Alpha Kings have complex personalities. I do not know what he wants from me or what I want from him— Well, I do want him to protect me from my father and sister and
Eating dessert was at least not a burden for my stomach. The rest of the meal hadn’t been that bad. Thankfully, I somehow warmed towards my mate—if his secret glances in my direction weren’t warming enough. I cleared my throat. “Beta Geneva told me of the upcoming Alpha Winter Ball. Am I required to be there as your Lu—I mean as your mate?” I looked away briefly before sighing, “Look. It’s fine for me if you want me there out of courtesy but it’s also okay for me if you just want me to stay here. After all, my father hasn’t yet known of my fate.” The last world felt like ash in my tongue. True, what Kallias and I had was fate. Destiny. But I don’t know if my father and sister know of those words when it comes to me. Kallias just listened as I stuttered. But then, his gaze softened afterward. “Evadne... it’s not even a month after you arrived here. I’m not forcing you. If you want to come, come. If you don’t...” he sighed and dragged his gaze to the
'The Alpha King seemed to devour any storm passing by just to show me his effort for us to dine together for the second time,’ I was telling myself. Begging myself. ‘Please don’t run to the toilet yet.’ I swallowed. Perhaps I should fart in my room first before meeting the Alpha King. My watery bowels turned even more watery. Mara howled at my thoughts, even the beads of sweat now forming on my forehead despite the cold. My wolf’s laughter continued, making my cheeks red. I hope Kallias doesn’t smell it, or at least scent it in me. Mara laughed even more. “What are you blushing at?” Kallias gently let go of me and helped me stand straight. “Can’t I just blush at my mate?” That foolish attempt to flirt in front of a cold Alpha is, well, foolish. But the Alpha King smiled, even if it didn’t reach his eyes. “Ladies first?” He waved a hand to the round table adorned with a sapphire blue tablecl
Evening finally came and I found myself reading a book. I don’t usually read books because the last time I held one, Elodie grabbed it from my hand and smacked it on my face, resulting in my nose bleeding. Now, sitting for dinner before a roaring fireplace, snow relentlessly falling outside, I never felt more relaxed. I’m reading a love story, not sure how this came to the Alpha King’s possession and gathering dust in this little library. It was about an Alpha who fell in love with one of the daughters of the Moon Goddess, cursed to forget him every single day when the dawn breaks. Right. Another reason to cry tonight. But the smell of oranges that Farra included in my dinner along with the snowdrops she added to the vase on my vanity mirror rippled something in my heart. One that I have tried to tell my heart to forget and bury it where I cannot find it lurking as one of my feelings. But those feelings lingered. Summoned, it
“If you do that one more time, you’ll just break your leg rather than incapacitate your enemy.”I dared to glare at Beta Caesar, but he just laughed at me like a child who never learned from her mistakes.“Do this,” he added, punching an invisible enemy through the air.“But I have a weak punch,” I told him, “Besides, the enemy is gripping my other arm.”The Beta’s eyes smiled, “Your other arm is free so there’s that.”I grunted at him. I have spent the whole week learning and training with Beta Caesar. Mara couldn’t agree more and she loves to be able to show her white fur to the rest of the Nightblood Pack. I didn’t like it at first, however. But Beta Caesar’s enthusiasm and Beta Geneva’s excitement were what changed my perspective. Every breakfast, I sometimes stretch my arm or leg subtly before digging into my food. I learned to ignore the whispers of the other packmembers. That group of Warriors that once gossiped about me quieted, or maybe it’s because I was always present when
