Chapter 10

I paused for a moment, then walked over to the grave.

A bouquet of roses had already been placed in front of it.

I didn't move the flowers, but gently set my own beside them.

Quietly, I gazed at the faded old photo on the tombstone.

"Grandma, I've come to see you," I said.

I talked for a long time, alone.

Jake stood silently nearby, listening for who knows how long.

Finally, I took the worn journal out of my bag.

I lit it with a lighter.

Jake saw this and quickly reached out to stop me.

"Brenda, what are you doing?!" His face was full of panic.

I let go, and the burning paper fell onto his roses.

He immediately crouched down, picked it up, and used his jacket to extinguish the fire.

He hissed, seemingly burned.

"How can you burn what Grandma left behind?" he asked.

Looking at the hole burned in the roses, I said softly,

"How dare you come here? Aren't you afraid of karma?"

Jake froze.

After a moment, he stood up and looked at me.
