Chapter 3

Jeanette paid the taxi fare before picking up her pace and hurrying into the manor.

After passing the main gate, she had to walk through a huge garden. The journey took several minutes, and she did not dare to waste any time at all. She ran all the way to the front door and hurriedly tidied her hair before entering the living room. The aroma of food lingered in the living room.

The housekeeper, Berta, saw Jeanette and said awkwardly, “Miss Jeanette, you’re here. Master and Madam are already having their dinner.”

Jeanette’s body stiffened, and she looked embarrassed. She was part of the Godfrey family too, and this was a family dinner, but they did not wait for her...

“It’s okay.” Jeanette forced a smile and said, “Please bring me a set of silverware. Thank you.”

“Sure,” replied Berta.

Jeanette stood still for a few more seconds and took a deep breath. After composing herself, she walked over calmly and said politely, “Mom, Dad, sorry I’m late.”

Damon’s father, Christophe Godfrey, hummed and pointed to the dining table as he said, “Have a seat and eat.”

Jeanette nodded and sat down next to Damon. The latter focused on eating and did not even look at her.

Jeanette could not help but feel her heart turn cold. She silently clenched her fingers.

The housekeeper brought the silverware, and Jeanette thanked her. She then began to eat in the strange silence uneasily.

“Jeanette, you’ve been married to Damon for two years now,” Sylvia said with a smile, but her eyes did not seem very kind. “When are you planning to have a baby?”

Jeanette clenched her fingers that were holding her spoon. She did want to have a baby, but she and Damon had a stiff relationship. Having a child might help strengthen their relationship significantly, but Damon needed to give her the opportunity to make it happen.

During the two years of their marriage, they had only slept together a few times. She could not get pregnant even if she wanted to.

Jeanette was embarrassed and did not know how to answer. She could not possibly tell Sylvia that she could not have a baby because Damon refused to touch her ever since they got married.

Thus, she looked at Damon to seek his help, hoping that he would say something. However, he continued eating gracefully with a nonchalant expression on his face, as if it had nothing to do with him.

Jeanette had no choice. She blushed and forced herself to reply, “I’ll try harder in the future.”

Damon suddenly curled his lip and gave Jeanette a sharp mocking glance. Although he did not speak or make any sound, his smile and glance, which were as sharp as a knife, were enough to make Jeanette feel like she had just gotten slapped in public. Her face flushed from embarrassment.

“You’ll try harder in the future? You’ve been saying that for two years already! Jeanette, is it because you can’t have a baby?” Sylvia suddenly raised her voice. “If that’s the case, you’d better not hold Damon back.”

Jeanette quickly explained, “It’s not that, it’s just... it’s just...” She looked at Damon again to seek help, but he did not seem to notice it at all. He got another serving of soup leisurely.

“Enough!” Sylvia frowned and said with a look of disgust, “You’re going to the hospital with me for a check-up tomorrow. If you really can’t have a baby, you’ll divorce Damon right away!”

Jeanette’s face turned pale, and she could not say a word. The so-called check-up was obviously to find out whether she really was infertile. Even though she knew that her marriage to the Godfrey family had not been properly handled and Sylvia did not like her, which was totally reasonable, wasn’t it too mean to treat her this way?

Jeanette snapped as she slammed her spoon on the table and stood up. Her sudden movement shocked everyone in the room. Sylvia’s expression became even more distorted as she was about to tell Jeanette off.

However, Jeanette calmly spoke before Sylvia could say anything. “You should ask Damon why I can’t get pregnant.”

Sylvia’s eyes widened. “What do you mean?”

Jeanette turned her gaze to look at Damon, who seemed like he had absolutely nothing to do with the matter. She somehow gathered the courage to ask him boldly, “Darling, Mom is asking us why we haven’t been able to have a baby. Why don’t you explain it?”

Damon finally raised his eyes to look at Jeanette. He then spoke coldly and indifferently. “Because this woman isn’t worthy of carrying my child.”
