I sighed in despair as every other person in the house, with a normal sleep-wake routine, retired for the night. First, my parents turned off their lights, then my brother Cody, and then, finally, Ethan went to sleep. Leaving me wide awake in my room.
I had slept till sundown so there was no way I would be able to go to sleep anytime soon, even if it was nearly 1 in the night. I felt like a nocturnal animal, sleeping during the day, and staying up at night.
I huffed as I sat on my bed, leaning against my headboard, no idea what to do now. I picked up my phone from the nightstand and opened up my call logs, which revealed the many calls that had come through Mom's and Cody's phones. I asked both of them, about their reason for calling me so many times. I wondered if there was something urgent, they wanted to tell me, or something good. Both of them looked confused when I mentioned the missed calls and they denied calling me in the last couple of days. Both of them showed me the call logs on their phones and I frowned because there wasn't a single call made by them to my number. If they didn't call me, then who did?
I got up from the bed and went downstairs to arrange some snacks for myself. I was awake, might as well catch up on the series I have been meaning to watch for the longest time. I grabbed several packets of chips and chocolates and went back to my bed. I picked up my laptop and logged into N*****x, all set to watch the web series.
Halfway through the episodes, my thoughts wandered to Harper. It was a lie there hasn't been a moment he hasn't been lingering at the back of my mind, since the morning, when I saw him after so many months. As much as I wanted to blame and curse him for the alpha ceremony, I knew I had no right. I was the one who had told him that I wasn't coming back. What was he supposed to do, leave his pack in danger?
Moreover, I wasn't sure if I wanted to be the Luna, because as prestigious as the title was, it also came with a lot of responsibilities. If I had been here, I don't think I would have accepted the Luna position if Harper had asked me to. Not because I was afraid of the responsibilities it entailed but because it would have bonded me and Harper intricately, and I doubted either of us was ready for that, especially not the way things were going right now.
Oh god, what a mess! I wanted Harper but I didn't want him at the same time. And then there was the matter of Ethan, who was sleeping in the guestroom, merely feet away from me.
I shook my head as if the simple action would ward off any thoughts of the boys in my life and the drama that came with them. Can't boys just be without drama?!
I tried to concentrate on the laptop screen, rather than my thoughts when I heard a tapping sound on my bedroom window. My eyes widened when I realized that I hadn't imagined it. My heartbeat sped up when I thought about who it could be. I sat stunned on my bed while the movie on my laptop continued. Movie? Or was it a web series?
I shakily got up from the bed, closed my laptop without thinking, and walked to the window, which was currently hidden by the curtain. Was it Harper? I didn't need to ask the question. The way my body was tingling and sweating, I knew it was him. I knew that he had seen me at his alpha ceremony, which would explain his visit. What I didn't get was, why after so many hours? Why did it take so long for him to come to me? See, all this time I wanted to be away from him and now I was wondering why he hadn't come to me sooner. If this kept up, I would surely go mad.
I swiped the curtain away, which only left the window glass between me and me. Between me and Harper. I could just not open my window and Harper would take the message and go away. I should do that, considering the circumstances of our relationship right now but when have I ever been smart or opted for intelligent choices when Harper was concerned?
I took a deep breath and unlatched the window, not having the guts to open the window and invite him in. Harper would have heard me unlocking the window latch and he would do the honors himself.
I follow the movement of the latch, my breath coming in soft spurts of light air. The window is then pulled up and a jean-clad lands in my room, followed by another leg, a muscular torso, and finally Harper's face.
Suddenly, my body feels very heavy and I want to sit down but I don't have the strength to walk towards my bed or to my chair so that my legs can rest. My eyes meet Harper's and a shock of awareness travels through my body. He holds my gaze and I find it unable to move mine.
The air in the room suddenly feels heavy, with a scorching intensity that hadn't been there when I glanced at Harper during the day. Somehow, him being here, standing in my room is far more personal and effective than gazing at each other on opposite ends of the backyard of his pack house.
"Hey!" I whispered, my voice coming out deep and so throaty, that I wondered if it had been me who had spoken. Harper's gaze turned fiery and without a word, he stepped forward and put his arms around me, his face finding his place in the crook of my neck.
Harper's scent washed over me and I let myself enjoy his presence for the moment. These four months apart had somehow made him more muscular, and somehow taller than he was before. I put my arms around his waist and let the both of us have this moment. This one selfish moment before we started talking about things, about our problems, about our lives, and everything else went to shit.
Harper didn't let go of me for a few minutes and I didn't have it in me to complain. I was enjoying his hug, even though later I would admonish myself for being weak.
He leaned back from me, his scent overwhelming my senses in the best way possible. He put both of his arms on my face and I subconsciously leaned into his touch. He placed a feather-light kiss on my forehead before he took two steps back, taking his body heat and comfort with him.
"I needed to see you," Harper said and crossed his arms. His arms bulged in his leather jacket, more than they had four months ago. I nodded because I knew what he meant.
Seeing Harper after such a long time had been like breaking the floodgates of emotions. Every emotion I felt towards him felt so heightened and the need to be close to him was so overwhelming that I just wanted to get back into his arms again.
"I wanted you to know that I needed to have my alpha ceremony because of these rogues who have attacked the pack again and again." He opened his mouth to continue his rant but I interrupted him.
"I know, the goddess told me." Harper nodded and moved his gaze around my room before making it back to me.
"I asked Natalie to be the Luna, not because we like each other but because I didn't want to include another girl between us. I didn't want to make this crazy triangle into a distorted square or rectangle or whatever." Harper explained and ran a hand through his hair.
"I don't blame you for choosing Natalie to be your Luna. I understand your reasons." I whispered, even though it hurt me to say so. It somehow felt wrong to say it out loud as this whole scenario somehow went against nature and it did. Natalie wasn't supposed to be Harper's Luna, I was and that was why it felt so wrong. "Why didn't you come to see me before?"
Harper flinched at my question but didn't look guilty. He moved around me and sat on my bed. "This room feels complete with you in it." Harper smiled at me and I wondered what that meant.
"What does that mean? How do you know how my room looks when I'm not here?" I wondered out loud and noticed Harper's cheeks turn pink.
Before I could ask him exactly what he meant, he started explaining why he didn't come after me, how his father had collapsed on the stage and he had to rush him to the hospital. Sebastian still wasn't stable and this night was crucial for his survival. The more Harper spoke, the more it affirmed that I had come at a very good time to deliver the goddess' message to Sebastian.
"Oh, harper. I'm so sorry." I whispered, touched how he came to me even when his father was fighting for his life at the hospital. He nodded wordlessly and got up from my bed.
"I, uh, should go." He looked everywhere else but at me and I frowned at his sudden change in demeanor.
"What? Why?" I could hear the hurt in my voice, which I hadn't expected.
"Because if I don't go right now, I'll do something like this." He was suddenly in front of me, put his arms around me, pulled me to him, and crashed his lips on mine. I gasped in surprise and pulled him to me, kissing him back with equal intensity.
I was kissing Harper and he was kissing me. The feeling felt so foreign and yet so natural as if my body didn't forget what my brain did. Sparks were exploding all over my body. The fabled sparks, came alive whenever one touched his/her destined mate. The feeling of feeling Harper against my body was indescribable. It was so heady, never making me want to let go. I crushed my body to Harper's, eliciting a throaty groan from him. I relished the fact that I was able to do this to him, to this powerful and always in-control werewolf. It made me feel powerful, something only a girl could relate to. I could make Harper, the big bad alpha, lose control. He pulled back a little, making my lips tingle and I resisted the urge to pull him back and start another long-drawn-out kiss. "I really should go!"What? No.Why was he saying this? I was enjoying kissing Harper. It made me feel so good and made me forget everything. Being with him landed me in a heady space, where everything was right wi
~ Harper’s pov ~ I was being selfish, I knew that. I shouldn't have left Zara last night like that, I knew that too. But the thing was, I had to. Apart from checking on my dad's status, I also had to do a few very important things for the pack. I didn't want to leave her like that. The way she was looking at me like she never wanted to let me go, made my wolf and my heart go crazy. I had dreamt of that look on Zara's face in my dreams so many times that it felt like a fantasy to see it in reality. The look symbolized want, need, hope, and all the emotions alike. My wolf was reluctant to let go, after having Zara in my arms for so much time, I didn't want to go. I wanted to stay there, in her room and lay beside her. I had slept in her bed so many times while she was away, it would be a welcome change to sleep beside her for once, caging her in my limbs and breathing in her scent. I would have given anything to wake up to her beside me and see how amazingly we fit together, both phy
~ Harper’s POV ~ I clenched my eyes shut as waves of terrible pain wrecked me. They started from my chest and reached to my toes. I was still in my wolf form and I could still feel that I was running. My paws were thudding on the ground, leaving a trail of dust behind me and my muscles felt alive. The realization that Zara was cheating on the mate bond at this very moment was so painful. It struck me down emotionally as well as physically.I would have tripped on my own two feet and landed on the muddy, forested floor, had I not been in my wolf form. Ironically the pain was more intense because I was in my wolf form. My wolf's destined mate was cheating on the mate bond and nothing anyone could say could soften the blow. My wolf pushed me to the back of my mind and took control. My pupils would have dilated and the green in them would have become more prominent. In addition to my silver coat, I must have looked feral. I had planned to retain control of my wolf form while fighting t
I had kissed both Ethan and Harper in a few hours. The fact, somehow, made me feel dirty and uncomfortable in my skin. I would have never done this kind of thing in the past. I was practically stringing two guys along and they had absolutely no idea. With all their faults and mistakes, neither of them deserved to be played like this. No one deserved to be strung along. There was nothing that could excuse this behavior of mine. What I was doing was wrong and being confused and emotional didn't make my actions right. I had chosen to come back here, knowing that I would have to own up to my problems. I knew that once I came back, I wouldn't be able to turn my head the other way when a problem presented itself in front of the people I cared about. The guilt in my stomach settled uneasily and intensified because right now, my hand was entwined with Ethan's. We were walking towards the hospital to meet the father of the guy I had kissed the night before. It sounded so wrong and so callus.
"You knew, didn't you?" I accused Sebastian, as I took in his unsurprised reaction. I had just told him that he would have to let his wolf die, so he could survive and he didn't look shocked. He just looked resigned."I did." He whispered and closed his eyes and turned his head away from me. "Ever since I was struck down by the arrow laced with wolfsbane, I have suffered through endless cycles of being well and then catapulting back to bed rest. When I was attacked and my body was filled with poison, my wolf fought to keep me alive. It took so much energy out of him that he became weak against it. Every time I was getting better, my wolf was supplying me with energy. Whenever I tried to help my wolf, my health deteriorated and I was bed-bound. I have tried to save my wolf which is why I am stuck here in this bed now. I have seen it happen many times before and I somehow knew that it had happened to me, I just didn't want to accept it. I have known since before the ceremony that if I w
He left. Just like that. I was left standing there in front of the nurse's station, watching in the direction Harper had just walked off. What just happened?I turned to look at Ethan, who was already looking at me, probably wondering the same thing I was. Harper had just talked to Ethan about crossing his pack territory without permission. Considering Ethan was a rogue, he was at the mercy of the pack's aloha, Harper. He could kick Ethan out of the pack, he could permit him to stay here or he could kill him. I refused to believe that Harper was so petty that he would hurt Ethan because he was here with me. Harper had a right to be angry with me, with Ethan too, but he wouldn't harm either of us in any way. That I was sure of. On second thought, he wouldn't harm me. I had no idea about Ethan."He said to meet him at his house in twenty minutes. What do you think he is going to do?" Ethan asked me as if I could anticipate Harper's every thought and action. "I don't know. I have no i
~ Harper’s POV ~My eyes were still stuck on the door of my office, through which my mate had just run off. Her sweet smell of chocolates and pine still lingered in the room and I couldn't help but take a few deep breaths to calm myself. I needed to do that because my wolf was going crazy. He was a hormonal mess right now and his colorful emotions right now were giving me a whiplash. He had been so angry when that bloody rogue had dated to challenge us. To a human-like Zara, the air was filled with testosterone but to a wolf, the air in my office was filled with a barely contained threat, severe competitive animosity, and challenge. By stating that I couldn't protect my mate, that filthy rogue had all but challenged my right to be Zara's mate. My wolf had fought with me to come out and put this good-for-nothing mutt in his place but I had resisted. I had planned to be calm and be in control and I had tried so very hard to be exactly that. He had tried my patience to the breaking po
I ran from the alpha's office. The sexual tension between Harper and me had been at an all-time high. We were just having a casual conversation (as casual as one could expect us to have) and then he was closing in on me, caging me in his arms, whispering sexy promises, touching me and I wasn't pushing him away. I couldn't push him away. I was flushed, breathless, and turned on. So, I did the only thing I could think of. I turned around and left the small room as fast as I could. My mind was on overdrive and abnormally receptive to the hormones raging in my body. I hastily climbed down the stairs, eager as hell to get out of the pack house, away from Harper and the emotions he could still instill in me. I spotted Ethan leaning on the car as soon as I opened the front doors of the pack house. I immediately felt guilty when he smiled at me. Granted, Harper and I hadn't even kissed back in his office but it was still too close for my comfort and peace of mind. I walked closer to Etha
Bonus Chapter: Natalie's POVI knew something was wrong when I didn't get my period for two months. I never had a smooth cycle so I wasn't troubled when they didn't happen the first time but their absence in the second consecutive month got me worried. My body had undergone certain changes I knew weren't normal and I was worrying myself to death, thinking about some kind of deadly disease that would kill me in a few months. Even though I knew that my immunity system was way better than a normal human's, I couldn't help but entertain such thoughts. I didn't tell anyone of my concerns as I didn't want anyone to worry because of my baseless concerns. Nonetheless, I booked the first possible appointment with the pack gynaecologist. I had prepared myself for everything, a tumour in my ovary, internal hemorrhaging of my uterus that would result in an immediate hysterectomy, or even breast cancer which would again lead to a complete mammectomy. But as I sat in front of the doctor and she ex
Bonus Chapter: Ethan's POVWhen you grow up as a werewolf, all you ever hear is the word 'mate', because people around you can't stop talking about them. Some elders talk about mates with a dazed but happy look in their eyes and you can easily tell how much they love their mates. When young people talked to mates, you could practically feel their longing and the love they had for their mates. When teenagers talk about mates, you can feel their desperation to find their mates and be one with them. Rejections in my pack were extremely rare and every werewolf lived happily ever after with their fated mates. There were no doubts, no questions asked because your mate could be the exact fit of your soul, your second half, and the one who you are supposed to live as long as you live. Growing up and watching my parents and pack members, this is all I had watched and learned, that a mate was for you to love, hold and protect till the end of your days. When you're brought up like that, the ide
EPILOGUE 3: HARPER'S POV (TEN YEARS LATER)It was three years ago when Mason was first teased by a classmate about the unusual arrangement of his parents. I had always known that as he was growing up, he became especially attuned to the fact that the way his family lived wasn't exactly normal by usual standards. There were so many unusual factors that they were bound to seem different to him and I wasn't exactly prepared for how Mason was coping with how different his family seemed to be from any other family in the pack. As the future alpha, it was essential to be a part of the pack because other people were often intimidated by the power you had and by the power you would have in the future. My father always taught me to be a part of the pack but always remember that you could never essentially be a part of the pack. And this is exactly what I had taught Mason to do; I had asked him to play with all the other wolf kids but always remember that in the future, he will be responsible
Epilogue 2: Zara's POVI could feel everyone's eyes on me, which instantly made me nervous. I hated feeling this way but I wasn't sure I could help it. I hated being the centre of attention and walking down an aisle and standing in front of all the pack members to take part in the Luna ceremony was exactly that, being the centre of attention. Harper had told me that since I was the true luna of the pack, the ceremony would be a little different and I wasn't sure how that would affect me as I hadn't exactly attended Natalie's ceremony. I weakly smiled at all the pack members assembled in the pack grounds and started walking down the aisle towards the raised stage at the front of the pack. I was barefoot to pay homage to the natural aspect of the pack and to respect the raw nature of the wolves. The grass was soft beneath my feet and I immediately compared the softness to the grass in the spirit world where I used to meet the moon goddess. Harper had instructed me to not look around an
Epilogue: Zara's POVA blush immediately coated my cheeks as I slowly woke up from my deep slumber. The bed felt too cosy and I couldn't help but snuggle against Harper's body. His amazing body heat and the tingles that danced all over my skin whenever we touched made me let out a deep, sleepy moan. I felt Harper stir beside me and felt his arm settle on my bare hip, eliciting a heady warmth to settle deep in my belly. His thumb gently caressed my hip bone and I moved closer to him, determined to have as much skin contact as possible and leave no space between us. Harper's scent surrounded me, which brought an involuntary sleepy smile to my face. Even with my eyes closed, I could picture Harper's slightly upturned nose as he slept. It was too hard to resist his adorable expressions so most of the time, I didn't even try. My head rested on his shoulder and my face settled in the crook of his neck. Without needing to open my eyes, I leaned forward and planted an open-mouthed kiss on Ha
I thought about it for so many months, because the act of being marked by Harper seemed final. It felt like a full stop and in a way, it was final, an end. I knew the meaning of being marked even before I had decided to go away when I had learned of Natalie's pregnancy. I had asked him to mark me so many months ago and he had refused. It seemed so long ago, Aiden's birthday party when he found out that Samantha was his mate. So much has happened since then, things that have made me value the most precious things in life, let go of grudges, and the importance of relationships. After all, I have been through, I believe I have grown as a person. Not just me either, I know that all of us, Harper, Natalie, Samantha, and Aiden have grown up and matured in a way that most eighteen-year-olds don't. Well, Natalie is nineteen years old and so is Harper, as of today. So, I want to stress the fact that the decision to mate with Harper wasn't a light one even though I know most people wouldn't s
I think what the moon goddess said somehow helped me get over Ethan's death. I was still wrung and grieving about him for weeks, don't get me wrong but thinking about how must be at peace somehow made it easy to bear his loss. If I were to believe the goddess' words, Ethan wasn't happy in his life and was lost because he had no apparent purpose. I like to think that he got the release he so desperately wanted and needed. Even after knowing all this, I still couldn't cope with the fact that I won't be seeing him every day. He had been my source of comfort and strength for so long, he was someone I could lean on. He had begun to understand me in ways I'd never thought possible. And his absence felt left like a big void and I wasn't sure I could fill it. I didn't know if it was possible to fill it. When Harper told me that Ethan wouldn't be getting a funeral like the pack members because he was a rogue, I had been so infuriated. I knew that what Harper was saying was a part of who he w
~ Harper’s POV~"You do realize that to break the bond between us, either one of us will have to complete the mating process and mark our mates," I remarked and watched as Natalie nodded her head in acknowledgment. We had just gotten back after performing the final rites of the pack warriors who had lost their lives from the battle with the rogues. Needless to say, we needed some time to regain our bearings before we mingled with the rest of the world. I had done it before when my father was fighting for his life and I still found it jarring to my being, to perform the final rites of the werewolves who lose their lives. I couldn't imagine how Natalie must be feeling as it was her first time dealing with this ceremony. And hopefully, the last time. "I know," she said and we didn't speak for a few moments. I sincerely hoped that it would get easier with time, performing this ritual. It certainly hurt more when I knew that the pack members were paying for the mistakes my father committe
When I came to my senses, I immediately knew that Harper wasn't in the bed with me. I had lost consciousness when I was engulfed in his body heat, with his arms wrapped around me. The loss of his presence was so pronounced that I didn't want to open my eyes. It felt like he was the only reason I wasn't emotionally breaking down right now. A very big part of me wanted to be near him right now and the fact that he wasn't here with me disappointed me a lot. Even in my dreams, I had expected him to be here with me, helping me get over my loss. I wanted to never open my eyes and I was glad the room was shrouded in darkness. My neck prickled in awareness and I became aware of someone sitting in the room and even though, the threat of the rogues was over, I suddenly felt unsafe. "I know you are awake, Zara." I recognized that voice and the fear immediately abated. I opened my eyes and got up in a seating position. I leaned against the headboard and regarded the figure of the soft figure of
