Walking away

AURORA’S POV.

I wasn’t expecting Jax to show up anytime soon.

Was it weird that I forgot about him for a brief minute, and I loved it?

I loved the fact that my heart ached less. The fact that I felt whole for some seconds.

Don’t get me wrong, please. I never said Jax doesn’t make me whole, but sometimes a quick break from what used to make one’s heart ache will make one realize how valuable peace can be.

“I need to get a drink; I will be back.” I heard him say as he stepped off the sofa and walked away.

My eyes followed him carefully—thoughts of how he would react to the news of the baby running through my mind.

“You good?” I heard Adriel ask, and I snatched my eyes back to look his way.

“Hmm, hmm.” I hummed, followed by a nod as I sipped on my cocktail.

“You don’t look like it.” He responded.

I blinked my eyes and lowered the glass a little. Too bad that a stranger I met today could notice something wrong with me while my best friend of years couldn’t even see my sadness.

“I’m fine.”
