Becca POV

It had been two days since I found out the truth about the oak tree. I tried to focus on my daily routine, smiling more often, not wanting to give away my wary heart, especially to Bas, who could easily tell when I was hurting.

Not wanting to dwell on the troubling revelation, I turned my attention to something else that had been bothering me—my lovely friend Lola, whom I had abandoned during this time.

When I heard a knock on the door, my heart raced. I opened it to find Lola standing there, her arms crossed and a scoff escaping her lips. "I was just thinking you were going to keep subbing me forever."

"Lola," I said, a wave of relief washing over me. I had been nervous ever since I sent her the message asking her to meet at my apartment. I thought she wouldn't respond, and even if she didn't, I wouldn't have blamed her.

"Thanks for coming," I said, my voice filled with gratitude.
