JASMINES POV
I sat in that crowd for almost two hours pondering on Caine’s words. It sounded like an invitation to treat, one which could lead me into trouble. But it was a nice offer, yet one I could not accept because he was dating my best friend. After hours of sitting and watching, my babe was finally called. I climbed the stage, the spotlight on me as Alpha Morgan gave the second microphone to me. He asked me questions that I had seen In the leaflet which Caine gave me. We were six questions down, the crowd cheering with every correct answer I had until the last. “Every pack needs a new leader the old one is gone. Who amongst my sons do you think has that in him?” I truer to understand the nature of the question as the silence in the hall grew. It sounded tricky, but we all knew the answer. “Caine,” “And why?” He threw a second question, staring at me closely. “He…urm. He’s strong, carries everyone along, protective, and…” “And not because you love him?” Alpha Morgan said with a smile. The audience burst into a roar, some laughing while others booing him. He gestured for me to return to my seat after picking a paper from the stony bowls on the stage. We were to wait until the revealing time, and when that time came, I opened my paper. “Alyssa?” I said under my breath, my breath hitching in my throat as I looked up, towards the grand stage. The coaches were climbing up, standing beside their names. And soon, the students who passed were called to stand beside their coaches. “Who’s on your paper,” Dave crept up from behind, attempting to peep into mine. “Alyssa, yours?” He showed me instead of saying it. I rolled my eyes, trying to hide my jealousy and anger. “Of course, you’d be on his team. What position then?” I asked as we climbed up the stage with the rest of the students who passed. “Defense,” he answered, looking excited. We parted ways, and I took my stand behind Alyssa, the tall, pretty lady whose face was stitched into a smile. “That is it for tonight. To the rest of you, good luck on your next trials,” the occasion finally came to an end, with the sound of music filling the air for the after-party. Alyssa led us to a corner of the hall, standing in our midst as we circled her. “Hi, I’m Alyssa, and I will be your coach from today henceforth. We are stationed at the diners, working to support the community and at the same time, we’d be having our skill classes every day. Training starts tomorrow from the diners. An email will be sent to you assigning you to various diners. Until then, have a lovely night,” she said, waving as left with some curious students. “She’s pretty isn’t she?” A boy said, walking to my side. I recognized him. “Eric from the woods,” “And the girl who cried wolf. I have a feeling we’ll get along pretty well,” he said, reaching for a handshake. I folded my hands, leaning to the side, and just stared at him. “Eric, join the rest,” Caine walked up from my back, sending Eric away. “I didn’t need to be saved,” I muttered under my breath. Caine said nothing until Eric was out of sight. “I know you might be mad because you expected me to be your coach and things didn’t…” “Mad?” I cut him short. “Alyssa looks good. I’d rather be on her side than be with someone I’ll keep fighting every hour,” I defended my feelings, making me chuckle. He looked cute, the way his dimples sank as his lips parted, revealing his white set. “Yeah? You think? “ he said. He reached for my hand but I moved away from his attempt to hold me. “Are you scared of me, Jasmine?” “Why should I be?” “Then please let’s hang out this once,” **** First.., I’m pretty. Then…he says please. He goes ahead to ask for a time together…to hang out. To crown it all, he’s been saying really funny things and complimenting me since we arrived at the diner. I’d barely touched my food after the order came because I was completely lost in my world of thoughts. Caine was being sweet, a typical red flag. “Did you hear me?” His voice reached for my attention. “Oh…yeah,” I forced a smile. “Then what’s the answer?” He asked, sending my smile crawling behind my cheeks. “You know what, never mind. You’re probably still overwhelmed by tonight’s activities,” he said before digging back into his food. “What are you playing at…Caine?” I just had to ask. He stopped chewing and shifted his gaze to me. “What…do you mean?” “This?” I said, gesturing around the table. “Last I remember you never wanted to see be seen around me…the looser,” “Things change…people change. I changed…” he hesitated, leaning back in a way that revealed the line of his chest from his unbuttoned shirt. “And so did you, Jasmine,” he said. His phone beeped, and mine did almost immediately. It was an email from Alyssa. “I was assigned to Maria’s diner,” I said, feeling a relief course through my veins. At least I know someone there and wouldn’t have to do so much work. “Great, but there’s an emergency back at home,” he said, pushing away from his chair and grabbing the keys. “What’s wrong?” “Lucy. She’s stopped breathing,” ******JASMINES POV We were racing towards the room where the rest were. Luckily, Lucy’s aunt was there before us. She’d already done what she could to revive Lucy and now she was breathing properly. “Mrs Elena,” I called, letting her pull me into a hug. “How’s she?” I asked. “You worry so much, kid. Lucy will be fine. I’ve written a list of drugs you should get her by morning. She has refused to come home for months. So when she wakes, do send my regards,” Mrs Elena said before leaving. What did she mean Lucy had refused to come home for months? The last time we made inquiries about her she said she was helping her aunt out. I waved it aside, joining my best friend on the bed. Her skin was pale, the blood on her torso staining the bandage which was carefully wrapped around it. “We should get some rest,” Caine broke the silence. “Not to worry, I’m good here,” I said without looking. They left me alone with her, and I slid myself under her duvet, wrapping my arms around her as I dr
JASMINES POV “Kiss him! Kiss him! Kiss him!” Up went the roar of the crowd. But I’d rather kiss a pig than Bryan. That lying ass cheat of a boy. “Jasmine…how are you?” Bryan asked, his gaze still fixed on mine. “I should be asking you the same question,” I returned, stealing a glance at the crowd who were now booing us. I didn’t like to be booed. Hell, I was too pretty for that now. “I came here to…” Bryan paused, shaking his head with a soft chuckle. “How funny. Is this fate's way of joining our paths again? Cos if it is then I sure ain’t ready for that,” “It’s a curse, rather. And neither am I ready to walk around with a curse again,” I fired. By now, the booing from the crowd had grown insane. Some of them were even throwing stuff at us. “Just kiss me and get this over this,” I said, attempting to blindfold myself again. But he stopped me with laughter which sounded like he was mocking me. “What ?” “You think I would do that?” “And you think they would let us get d
JASMINES POVI struggled against the grip around my neck, gasping for air as I was dragged into the cold night. My feet and knees scraped against the rocks, my mind racing to make sense of what was happening. “Let go of me!” I tried to scream, clawing at the arm that was holding me. When we stopped, I was slammed into a tree, a sharp stinging pain coursing through my back as I tried to get myself up. My captor finally stepped into the dim light of the moon and my breath hitched. “Bryan?” I spat his name, massaging my throat as I fought myself up. “You think you could humiliate me before everyone and get away with it?” He sneered, reaching for his pocket. Before I could speak, his hands were on my neck again, pressing me hard against the tree. “What do you want, Bryan?” I asked, forcing my voice to sound braver than I felt. A smirk curled his lips, his hand traveling to my forehead with the knife as he leaned in. “You, Jas. I want you to remember who’s in control here. Who’s alwa
JASMINES POV “Stay close to me,” Caine said, his voice low and urgent. My legs trembled at the sight of the lifeless bodies scattered like broken dolls on the floor. The cold suddenly seeped into my skin, making my blood freeze and almost making me halt. Caine’s hand found mine and squeezed it into his, and I could feel the temperature of his body rising with every step we took further. “What happened here?” I muttered, scanning the bodies by the left. My mind was blurred with questions. Could Bryan have done this? No…one person couldn’t wreak such havoc. So what or who was it then? “This is no wild animal,” Caine said like he was answering my thoughts. Something about the scene was off. I could smell it, and I bet Caine could too given the way he was sniffing the air. “This isn’t just blood or death…it’s something unnatural. Something new, dangerous,” he said. “Which means we should leave and probably report it to your dad,” I suggested, beginning to feel the dread of the m
CAINES POV “Tomorrow, don’t be late,” I almost choked on my pretense the moment I heard my girlfriend's voice. “Lucy,” I called her, shifting my gaze from Jasmine with what I hoped was a neutral expression. She was standing at the end of the corridor, hands colder with a brow corked. “I’m sorry, am I interrupting something?” “Lucy,” Jasmine chirped in before I could give a response. She hurried past me and pulled her into a hug. “You got us worried. Are you feeling good now?” She asked, pulling away and scanning Lucy’s body. The smile that played around Lucy’s lip looked fake, forced. But dge managed to maintain it until she was done talking with Jasmine. “You look exhausted. Has Caine been stressing you,” she glanced at me. “No, Caine and I only had a hectic day. We urm.,,we saw…” “Jasmine,” I had to cut her short. We weren’t supposed to talk about it until we were sure of what we were dealing with. “Head to your room, I’ll like a word with Lucy,” I ordered, forcing the me
JASMINES POV That was one step up. Putting Bryan at the center would certainly bring him out of his hiding, and I’ll get my revenge on him. His act last night still lived fresh in my memory, taunting every part of my body. Caine drove me silently back to town. He went down the lane leading to Mrs. Maria’s diner, where I was supposed to work. “Are you sure nothing happened between you and Bryan last night that i should know about?” Caine snapped me out of thoughts as he parked in front of the diner. “Nothing happened. He just happened not to be at the scene when it happened. So there’s every that he’s behind it,” “And you…what were you doing in the woods that late?” He asked. I sighed, turning to look at him. “You can’t know everything, Caine,” “But I want to know if I can trust you,” he said. I hesitated, staring into his eyes and realizing how genuine he was. That wasn’t enough to make me share the events of the previous night. “Trust is earned, not negotiated,” I re
CAINES POV “What script?” Jasmine asked. My heart sank into my stomach, my mind racing with thoughts of what answer I should give. I have never been in a situation where I had to cook up some lie to save my ass. With Jasmine’s gaze, it only got more difficult. “It’s nothing,” I said after much difficulty, forcing a smile. “They’re just trying to stir a drama. Don’t give them that,” I whispered. But Jasmine wasn’t buying that shit. Her narrowed eyes and crossed arms told me she wasn’t letting it slide any time soon. “Drama?” She blurted. I rolled my eyes and pulled her away from the table after taking their orders. I didn’t stop until we were behind the counter. “What happened to revenge?” “What happened to the script you’re supposed to play?” She fired. I exchanged glances with my friends who were sitting at the table, watching us. “Are they in on something involving us?” “You’re overthinking this. Have you suddenly forgotten the people you are dealing with?” I tried to shift t
JASMINES POV The barrel of the gun aimed at me felt grander than it looked. My heart pounded in my chest, but I forced myself to meet the gaze of the brown-haired lady. “Listen…you’ve got the wrong people,” I started, my voice calm despite the storm brewing in me. “We are just workers at the diner…” “Quit the lies or I’ll blow your eyes off,” she fired, her fingers twitching on the trigger. My hands returned to the air, trembling as my mind raced to figure out what else to say, “Save those lies,” she snapped, taking careful steps forward. “You think it’s my first time dealing with wolves? I know what you are I know what you do! The fake lives. The lies, the masks you wear to blend in,” she paused, her eyes flicking from me to Caine, then back to me. Caine shifted to my front, holding my other hand behind him. “You don’t want to do this,” he said, his voice low but firm. “Killing the wrong people won’t bring those you’ve lost,” “But it will give me peace!” She snapped, and I sa
JASMINE’S POV “Can I have a word with you?” I asked, stealing glances at Bryan who was looking out of the window. Caine was still answering a call at the garage while I pulled Lucy to a corner. “That’s him,” I blurted. “Him? What do you mean by him?” “My ex, Lucy, Bryan. That’s him,” I clarified. My heart raced, my blood boiling as I mistakenly looked into his eyes. He looked away immediately, and I knew that guilt was eating him up. “Your…ex? That Bryan?” “Yes, Lucy, that's Bryan,” I answered. “Okay, chill. He’s been my work partner for a while now. I never knew he was the Bryan you were talking about,” Lucy snapped. She noticed that wasn’t going to get me calm, so instead, she took my hands and pulled me closer to her. “Hey, nothing is going on between us, he’s just a colleague. I am with Caine, remember?” She asked. I didn’t want to give her a response, but the way she looked into my eyes demanded one. I nodded consecutively. “Yeah, yeah,” I breathed. “An
LUCY’S POV “Whatever this is, Luce, it’s not normal,” Bryan said, inching closer to me. I sighed, falling back on the wooden chair behind me. We stood for almost ten minutes, waiting for Adrian to finish up with his meal. When he was finally done, he crept out from the darkness, the red eyes still glowing as he made himself visible. I felt tears brewing in my eyes as I stood up and tossed a jacket to him. “Put these on”. “How long has he been this way,” Bryan asked, helping me with the empty blood bags. “A month, two or three weeks. I can’t really tell. All I know is that there was something wrong with him the last time I went home,” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” Adrian interrupted, walking out of the darkness completely. He exhaled, slowly opening his eyes. The red was gone, likewise the rage. “Dad did something new, and for the first time it worked,” “For the first time?” I asked, trying to process what he meant. “Have there been other trials, Adrian?” “Yeah…they all
LUCY'S POVMy heart skipped a beat as the bag fell from my shoulder, the blood bags which I had stolen from the pack clinic sprawling on the floor. “Oh my God! Caine!” I exclaimed, trying to hide the guilt as I started linking them up with a rush. I tossed them into the bag, not paying attention to whatever he was saying.“Lucy, I asked a question!” He pulled my shoulder, sending me to the floor. I fell on my butt, wincing in pain. “Oh my…Luce, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to,”“Stay away from me,” I yelled, stopping him with an extended palm. I took my time on the floor, thinking of what lie to give to him so he wouldn’t go asking questions. “Lucy…I didn’t mean to hit you in that manner,” he apologized, taking further steps closer to me. I burst into tears, burying my head in my legs. That was the first excuse I could garner from my thoughts, just so I’d have enough time to think. “Don’t touch me, Caine,” I whimpered, sobbing into my palms. “You almost ruined it all. My efforts. My har
CAINES POV“You shouldn’t have moved the bodies,” Sheriff Sherwood returned to us, pocketing his gun.“We’re sorry, we just couldn’t stand and do nothing,” I replied. He gestured with his head for us to walk with him, and we didn’t stop until we were out of the crime scene, standing amid police vans and ambulances. I knew what he wanted to say just by looking at him. “Look, I’m sorry uncle, I just had to call in this favor. I understand you’ve helped us a lot of times, and my dad probably owes you for the countless favors you have rendered…”“Kid…”“Just…please. This is more like an outbreak than a crime scene. It’s…” I paused, staring at the bodies that were being moved. “It’s dark,” I completed. Uncle Sherwood, my father's younger brother, was the family’s stray child. He started by not meeting his wolf when he was younger, by hanging out in the human world, and always sneaking out of the house. According to my father, he got into more trouble than we could count. Especially with
JASMINES POVI was too wasted to act. I just sat there, letting the chaos around me do its thing. My head fell to the chair, watching as the ceiling traveled in circles. I thought I saw some runes on them, calling into me with its blue glowing light. They looked pretty, and I extended my hands, wishing I could float in the air and know what they felt like. But the music in the room died down, cutting my solemn moment short.“Let’s go, Jasmine,” I heard Caines voice. He sounded muffled, and I couldn’t see his face. “You’re drunk, how much did you have to drink?” He asked, throwing my hand around his shoulder and grabbing me from the waist. I knew what was happening around me, but at the same time, I didn’t. For a second I thought I was levitating, but then whenever I looked at Caine, that hope was gone. I didn’t feel sad or anything, just…empty. For once., nothing bothered me. Caine led me out of the room, and to stop my eyes from hurting, I closed them and rested my head on his sh
JASMINES POVI pressed my hand against my chest, leaning on the side of the wall as my mind spiraled out of control. Thoughts flew in like my mind was a passageway for them, causing my breath to come out ragged. A lot had happened in just what?—three days? And yet there was still someone downstairs calling me a murderer. How was I supposed to face all these while trying to focus on what wolf I would train? Not to speak of my father's deal with Natalia. I heaved a sigh, halted before my mirror, and ran my hands down my hair. The echoes of laughter and muffled sounds of music traveled into my room, it was a room party which I was informed about but declined. But I couldn’t stay in my room, not with all these thoughts running into my head. I needed a distraction, and the room party just seemed like it.With a little touch on my face and hair, I made my way to the room. Room 27. I knocked twice and the door flung open almost immediately, revealing an unfamiliar face. “I know you,” he
CAINE’S POV“Get off her!” I raced past Jojo and Imani, almost knocking them down as I made my way to Jasmine and Isha. I pulled Isha off her and flung her to the feet of her brothers. “Keep your eyes on her!” I yelled at them. For a second, I thought I saw the disappointment in their eyes. They helped Isha up, holding her still despite her aggressive kicks to be set free and yolk her into the living room. “Are you okay?” I extended my hand to help her up. “Yeah,” she coughed, almost falling back on my shoulder. Lucy stepped in between us. “I’ll take her from here,” she said, pulling Jasmine away from me. We all went into the living room but were divided. Jojo and Lucy were with Jasmine, while Harper, Spencer, and Imani were with Isha. I could already sense trouble coming hard at us. “She killed them,” Isha cried, sobbing in the arms of her brothers. “We’ll deal with that later, Isha,” I tried to keep her calm, but that made her angrier. Her blood-red eyes shot angrily at me, sn
JASMINES POVThoughts. More thoughts. Extra thoughts. All night, that was all running through my mind. A brother? I scoffed, turning to the other side of the bed. That was when I realized the sun was out. I’d spent all night pondering on Natalia’s words. I wanted to come down from my bed and feed my thirst, but my body isn't encouraging. I needed rest, even if it was for an hour or two. I shut my eyes, hoping to sleep this time. And just when I thought I was drifting into sleep, a knock came on my door. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up on the bed. The door opened, it was Caine. “Long night?” He asked, walking into my room. I sighed, collapsing on my bed. “How’s Jerry?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. They were beginning to feel heavy with sleep, but with Caine in my room, I knew my day had just begun. “He’s recovering well. Just the…you know…” he said, helping himself to a chair opposite my bed. I sat back up, holding my banging head with both hands. “Cool,” I dragged. “I came t
JASMINES POV “Where do we start from?” I asked Natalia, slowly walking to the glass while I maintained eye contact with her. “Trust,” she blurted, standing up and walking to the edge of the glass. I halted in front of her, a smile crawling up my lips. “Trust is the last thing you could ask for from me,” I replied, holding the gaze until he nodded with her hands going up in the air. “I’d understand. I mean who would want to trust me after going through that betrayal from her mother,” “She did it to keep me safe,” I defended my mom despite how it hurt me to know about all this. But I guess Natalia could see beneath my words of defense like she knew I was broken. “Did she? I mean…look at the damage she has caused you. She’s made you look weak…you’ve become a mockery…so much for someone who falls under…” “Answers,” I interrupted, holding back the tears in my eyes. The lock of the door clicked from outside, and I quickly took a glance at the key hanging in my trousers. Someone el
