JASMINES POV
“Kiss him! Kiss him! Kiss him!” Up went the roar of the crowd. But I’d rather kiss a pig than Bryan. That lying ass cheat of a boy. “Jasmine…how are you?” Bryan asked, his gaze still fixed on mine. “I should be asking you the same question,” I returned, stealing a glance at the crowd who were now booing us. I didn’t like to be booed. Hell, I was too pretty for that now. “I came here to…” Bryan paused, shaking his head with a soft chuckle. “How funny. Is this fate's way of joining our paths again? Cos if it is then I sure ain’t ready for that,” “It’s a curse, rather. And neither am I ready to walk around with a curse again,” I fired. By now, the booing from the crowd had grown insane. Some of them were even throwing stuff at us. “Just kiss me and get this over this,” I said, attempting to blindfold myself again. But he stopped me with laughter which sounded like he was mocking me. “What ?” “You think I would do that?” “And you think they would let us get down? These are humans. We once lived with them and know how violent they could get. So put your freaking scarf back on and kiss me!” I said under my breath, proceeding to blindfold myself. “I can’t kiss her!” Bryan yelled, more like announced to the crowd. The silence that followed after was enough to send me off my feet. The wind flushed against my face with shame, watching Bryan walk into the spotlight to condemn me…again. “I would rather go for someone taller, who can speak…and doesn’t smell like a fucking pig!” He said, causing my heart to sink. I know Bryan and I weren’t together again, but his words sent shivers down my spine, reminding me of the force that had driven me into writing that list of people who wronged me and how I was going to take my revenge on them. Bryan’s name was the third. Well, he just got a promotion to number one. “So…who’s gonna take number 3, and give me…number…pretty?” Bryan asked, raising his hand in the air. “I will,” Caine’s voice cut through the tension like a blade, commanding and sharp. All eyes drifted to him as he strode to the center of the stage with the confidence of someone who wasn’t afraid of the crowd or Bryan’s petty antics. “I’ll take it,” his deep voice carried over the murmurs of the crowd as he took the card from Bryan. “You can go find yourself a number called pretty,” The silence that followed was deafening. Bryan’s smug grin faltered as the crowd burst into cheers. I stood there, caught between the shock of satisfaction as Caine approached me. “Jasmine…” he said softly, taking my fingers in his. He tilted his head with a smirk that dared me to say no, then continued. “May I have the honor of kissing you?” The crowd's chant began immediately, rallying behind Caine. “Kiss him! Kiss him! Kiss him!” My heart was in a place of chokehold, my lungs finding it difficult to release air as I stared into his eyes. “Are you doing this for me or the show?” I asked under my breath, corking a brow to look tough when deep down, I was melting. “Both,” he replied without missing a beat. He leaned in, his hands brushing lightly against my cheeks. The noise around us faded when his lips met mine. And for a moment, my world froze. When we pulled apart, the crowds’ cheers grew more violent, but my focus was on Caine who was staring at me in a way I hadn’t seen him do before. As if I was more than the ‘little red hair’ he used to address me by. “About that list…” he said softly, his breath fanning against my skin. “Put me up, I’m ready to take on them with you,” he breathed, A cold shiver ran down my body, my eyes searching his to identify a lie or some kind of joke. But he was being serious. “They’re your friends,” “Doesn’t validate their attitude,” he replied. “And your name is on the list,” “Then…we can start with me,” he said almost immediately, taking his hands off my face and locking our elbows. The crowd kept cheering until we were down the stage. Bryan’s eyes followed us down, his shame hanging in the air as the my booed him. The man who attended to us earlier led us to his tent. “You can stay here, I’ll be fine tonight,” he ushered us in. “Ohh.., no…we’re not a cou…” “Thank you. We appreciate it,” Caine cut me short. What was he playing at? We went in, and the man closed it from outside. There were candles at four corners of the tent, giving it light. Caine was the first to take off his clothes. “It’s hot in here,” he muttered. I tried hard to look away from his biceps and well-curved muscle lines, but the harder I tried, the closer it pulled me. He reached for his belts, and I knew I had to do something. “Caine,” I broke the silence between us. He paused, turning to me. “I can’t sleep with you in here,” “Then would you prefer somewhere calmer, secluded?” He asked with a grin, his fingers playing around his belt. “No…no..eww. I meant we can’t sleep together in here,” I clarified to her his thinking back on the line. “What else did you think I was talking about?” He asked, washing my embarrassment away effortlessly. He lay on the bed and covered himself. “You either join me or let the cold kill you,” he added. My thoughts filled the room, pushing every instinct in me not to give myself into his tricks. First, he kissed me, and now he’s offering to share a bed with me. Caine belongs to Lucy, and I’d only be a cruel person to take advantage of her absence. I gently lay beside him, giving a little space between our bodies. A few minutes in, Caine fell deep asleep. His snores distorted my thoughts which were still lingering on the kiss. I turned around, my eyes scanning his eyes and lips. Everything about him was just…appealing. I reached to touch his face when I heard the zip of our tenth sliding down noisily. Before I could turn to check what or who it was, a strong arm wrapped around my neck and hurled me out of the bed. ******JASMINES POVI struggled against the grip around my neck, gasping for air as I was dragged into the cold night. My feet and knees scraped against the rocks, my mind racing to make sense of what was happening. “Let go of me!” I tried to scream, clawing at the arm that was holding me. When we stopped, I was slammed into a tree, a sharp stinging pain coursing through my back as I tried to get myself up. My captor finally stepped into the dim light of the moon and my breath hitched. “Bryan?” I spat his name, massaging my throat as I fought myself up. “You think you could humiliate me before everyone and get away with it?” He sneered, reaching for his pocket. Before I could speak, his hands were on my neck again, pressing me hard against the tree. “What do you want, Bryan?” I asked, forcing my voice to sound braver than I felt. A smirk curled his lips, his hand traveling to my forehead with the knife as he leaned in. “You, Jas. I want you to remember who’s in control here. Who’s alwa
JASMINES POV “Stay close to me,” Caine said, his voice low and urgent. My legs trembled at the sight of the lifeless bodies scattered like broken dolls on the floor. The cold suddenly seeped into my skin, making my blood freeze and almost making me halt. Caine’s hand found mine and squeezed it into his, and I could feel the temperature of his body rising with every step we took further. “What happened here?” I muttered, scanning the bodies by the left. My mind was blurred with questions. Could Bryan have done this? No…one person couldn’t wreak such havoc. So what or who was it then? “This is no wild animal,” Caine said like he was answering my thoughts. Something about the scene was off. I could smell it, and I bet Caine could too given the way he was sniffing the air. “This isn’t just blood or death…it’s something unnatural. Something new, dangerous,” he said. “Which means we should leave and probably report it to your dad,” I suggested, beginning to feel the dread of the m
CAINES POV “Tomorrow, don’t be late,” I almost choked on my pretense the moment I heard my girlfriend's voice. “Lucy,” I called her, shifting my gaze from Jasmine with what I hoped was a neutral expression. She was standing at the end of the corridor, hands colder with a brow corked. “I’m sorry, am I interrupting something?” “Lucy,” Jasmine chirped in before I could give a response. She hurried past me and pulled her into a hug. “You got us worried. Are you feeling good now?” She asked, pulling away and scanning Lucy’s body. The smile that played around Lucy’s lip looked fake, forced. But dge managed to maintain it until she was done talking with Jasmine. “You look exhausted. Has Caine been stressing you,” she glanced at me. “No, Caine and I only had a hectic day. We urm.,,we saw…” “Jasmine,” I had to cut her short. We weren’t supposed to talk about it until we were sure of what we were dealing with. “Head to your room, I’ll like a word with Lucy,” I ordered, forcing the me
JASMINES POV That was one step up. Putting Bryan at the center would certainly bring him out of his hiding, and I’ll get my revenge on him. His act last night still lived fresh in my memory, taunting every part of my body. Caine drove me silently back to town. He went down the lane leading to Mrs. Maria’s diner, where I was supposed to work. “Are you sure nothing happened between you and Bryan last night that i should know about?” Caine snapped me out of thoughts as he parked in front of the diner. “Nothing happened. He just happened not to be at the scene when it happened. So there’s every that he’s behind it,” “And you…what were you doing in the woods that late?” He asked. I sighed, turning to look at him. “You can’t know everything, Caine,” “But I want to know if I can trust you,” he said. I hesitated, staring into his eyes and realizing how genuine he was. That wasn’t enough to make me share the events of the previous night. “Trust is earned, not negotiated,” I re
CAINES POV “What script?” Jasmine asked. My heart sank into my stomach, my mind racing with thoughts of what answer I should give. I have never been in a situation where I had to cook up some lie to save my ass. With Jasmine’s gaze, it only got more difficult. “It’s nothing,” I said after much difficulty, forcing a smile. “They’re just trying to stir a drama. Don’t give them that,” I whispered. But Jasmine wasn’t buying that shit. Her narrowed eyes and crossed arms told me she wasn’t letting it slide any time soon. “Drama?” She blurted. I rolled my eyes and pulled her away from the table after taking their orders. I didn’t stop until we were behind the counter. “What happened to revenge?” “What happened to the script you’re supposed to play?” She fired. I exchanged glances with my friends who were sitting at the table, watching us. “Are they in on something involving us?” “You’re overthinking this. Have you suddenly forgotten the people you are dealing with?” I tried to shift t
JASMINES POV The barrel of the gun aimed at me felt grander than it looked. My heart pounded in my chest, but I forced myself to meet the gaze of the brown-haired lady. “Listen…you’ve got the wrong people,” I started, my voice calm despite the storm brewing in me. “We are just workers at the diner…” “Quit the lies or I’ll blow your eyes off,” she fired, her fingers twitching on the trigger. My hands returned to the air, trembling as my mind raced to figure out what else to say, “Save those lies,” she snapped, taking careful steps forward. “You think it’s my first time dealing with wolves? I know what you are I know what you do! The fake lives. The lies, the masks you wear to blend in,” she paused, her eyes flicking from me to Caine, then back to me. Caine shifted to my front, holding my other hand behind him. “You don’t want to do this,” he said, his voice low but firm. “Killing the wrong people won’t bring those you’ve lost,” “But it will give me peace!” She snapped, and I sa
JASMINES POV “What do you mean, lied?” I asked, finding it difficult to process the words my dad just said. “Dad,” “Sweetie…I’ve been trying to wrap my head around it all this while. It just doesn’t make any sense to me,” he added. But that wasn’t what I wanted to hear. My mother, not human? How were they expecting me to believe that a woman who raised me and whom I lived with for years wasn’t human? “Alpha?” “Your dad and I are still doing research, Jasmine. However, I have a question for you,” he said, sitting up in his chair. I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat and stole a glance at Caine who was standing outside the door. “Where were you the night of the massacre?” He asked. He interrupted my attempt to speak. “Now before you fill me in on how you were with my son all day, we all know that part of the story. What I want to know now, is where you were in the night of the massacre,” he added. I furrowed my brows, trying to get a hold of my thoughts which were
JASMINES POV “Get off me!” I yelled, struggling with the hands that were trying to hold me down. She was too strong for a lady of her size. I kicked several times, throwing failed jabs at her as she held me to the bed. “Tell me!” She growled, placing the gun on my head. But I guess that wasn’t enough to keep me still. To my surprise, even with the nose of a gun placed on my forehead, I didn’t back down. “Let me go! You’re going to get arrested for this!” I growled, yelling in her palm which covered my mouth. She dragged me by the hair and threw me to the floor. Without giving me a chance to get myself, she kicked my torso and dragged my legs. “One last chance, girl!” She growled, pointing the gun at me. My heart was in a race, my sweat mixed with my tears and they streamed down my face. “I’m…I’m the wrong person. You have the…the wrong person,” I said amid my rugged breath, clutching my stomach which hit the iron frame of my bed. My blood dripped from my nose, sending an alar
JASMINE’S POV “Can I have a word with you?” I asked, stealing glances at Bryan who was looking out of the window. Caine was still answering a call at the garage while I pulled Lucy to a corner. “That’s him,” I blurted. “Him? What do you mean by him?” “My ex, Lucy, Bryan. That’s him,” I clarified. My heart raced, my blood boiling as I mistakenly looked into his eyes. He looked away immediately, and I knew that guilt was eating him up. “Your…ex? That Bryan?” “Yes, Lucy, that's Bryan,” I answered. “Okay, chill. He’s been my work partner for a while now. I never knew he was the Bryan you were talking about,” Lucy snapped. She noticed that wasn’t going to get me calm, so instead, she took my hands and pulled me closer to her. “Hey, nothing is going on between us, he’s just a colleague. I am with Caine, remember?” She asked. I didn’t want to give her a response, but the way she looked into my eyes demanded one. I nodded consecutively. “Yeah, yeah,” I breathed. “An
LUCY’S POV “Whatever this is, Luce, it’s not normal,” Bryan said, inching closer to me. I sighed, falling back on the wooden chair behind me. We stood for almost ten minutes, waiting for Adrian to finish up with his meal. When he was finally done, he crept out from the darkness, the red eyes still glowing as he made himself visible. I felt tears brewing in my eyes as I stood up and tossed a jacket to him. “Put these on”. “How long has he been this way,” Bryan asked, helping me with the empty blood bags. “A month, two or three weeks. I can’t really tell. All I know is that there was something wrong with him the last time I went home,” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” Adrian interrupted, walking out of the darkness completely. He exhaled, slowly opening his eyes. The red was gone, likewise the rage. “Dad did something new, and for the first time it worked,” “For the first time?” I asked, trying to process what he meant. “Have there been other trials, Adrian?” “Yeah…they all
LUCY'S POVMy heart skipped a beat as the bag fell from my shoulder, the blood bags which I had stolen from the pack clinic sprawling on the floor. “Oh my God! Caine!” I exclaimed, trying to hide the guilt as I started linking them up with a rush. I tossed them into the bag, not paying attention to whatever he was saying.“Lucy, I asked a question!” He pulled my shoulder, sending me to the floor. I fell on my butt, wincing in pain. “Oh my…Luce, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to,”“Stay away from me,” I yelled, stopping him with an extended palm. I took my time on the floor, thinking of what lie to give to him so he wouldn’t go asking questions. “Lucy…I didn’t mean to hit you in that manner,” he apologized, taking further steps closer to me. I burst into tears, burying my head in my legs. That was the first excuse I could garner from my thoughts, just so I’d have enough time to think. “Don’t touch me, Caine,” I whimpered, sobbing into my palms. “You almost ruined it all. My efforts. My har
CAINES POV“You shouldn’t have moved the bodies,” Sheriff Sherwood returned to us, pocketing his gun.“We’re sorry, we just couldn’t stand and do nothing,” I replied. He gestured with his head for us to walk with him, and we didn’t stop until we were out of the crime scene, standing amid police vans and ambulances. I knew what he wanted to say just by looking at him. “Look, I’m sorry uncle, I just had to call in this favor. I understand you’ve helped us a lot of times, and my dad probably owes you for the countless favors you have rendered…”“Kid…”“Just…please. This is more like an outbreak than a crime scene. It’s…” I paused, staring at the bodies that were being moved. “It’s dark,” I completed. Uncle Sherwood, my father's younger brother, was the family’s stray child. He started by not meeting his wolf when he was younger, by hanging out in the human world, and always sneaking out of the house. According to my father, he got into more trouble than we could count. Especially with
JASMINES POVI was too wasted to act. I just sat there, letting the chaos around me do its thing. My head fell to the chair, watching as the ceiling traveled in circles. I thought I saw some runes on them, calling into me with its blue glowing light. They looked pretty, and I extended my hands, wishing I could float in the air and know what they felt like. But the music in the room died down, cutting my solemn moment short.“Let’s go, Jasmine,” I heard Caines voice. He sounded muffled, and I couldn’t see his face. “You’re drunk, how much did you have to drink?” He asked, throwing my hand around his shoulder and grabbing me from the waist. I knew what was happening around me, but at the same time, I didn’t. For a second I thought I was levitating, but then whenever I looked at Caine, that hope was gone. I didn’t feel sad or anything, just…empty. For once., nothing bothered me. Caine led me out of the room, and to stop my eyes from hurting, I closed them and rested my head on his sh
JASMINES POVI pressed my hand against my chest, leaning on the side of the wall as my mind spiraled out of control. Thoughts flew in like my mind was a passageway for them, causing my breath to come out ragged. A lot had happened in just what?—three days? And yet there was still someone downstairs calling me a murderer. How was I supposed to face all these while trying to focus on what wolf I would train? Not to speak of my father's deal with Natalia. I heaved a sigh, halted before my mirror, and ran my hands down my hair. The echoes of laughter and muffled sounds of music traveled into my room, it was a room party which I was informed about but declined. But I couldn’t stay in my room, not with all these thoughts running into my head. I needed a distraction, and the room party just seemed like it.With a little touch on my face and hair, I made my way to the room. Room 27. I knocked twice and the door flung open almost immediately, revealing an unfamiliar face. “I know you,” he
CAINE’S POV“Get off her!” I raced past Jojo and Imani, almost knocking them down as I made my way to Jasmine and Isha. I pulled Isha off her and flung her to the feet of her brothers. “Keep your eyes on her!” I yelled at them. For a second, I thought I saw the disappointment in their eyes. They helped Isha up, holding her still despite her aggressive kicks to be set free and yolk her into the living room. “Are you okay?” I extended my hand to help her up. “Yeah,” she coughed, almost falling back on my shoulder. Lucy stepped in between us. “I’ll take her from here,” she said, pulling Jasmine away from me. We all went into the living room but were divided. Jojo and Lucy were with Jasmine, while Harper, Spencer, and Imani were with Isha. I could already sense trouble coming hard at us. “She killed them,” Isha cried, sobbing in the arms of her brothers. “We’ll deal with that later, Isha,” I tried to keep her calm, but that made her angrier. Her blood-red eyes shot angrily at me, sn
JASMINES POVThoughts. More thoughts. Extra thoughts. All night, that was all running through my mind. A brother? I scoffed, turning to the other side of the bed. That was when I realized the sun was out. I’d spent all night pondering on Natalia’s words. I wanted to come down from my bed and feed my thirst, but my body isn't encouraging. I needed rest, even if it was for an hour or two. I shut my eyes, hoping to sleep this time. And just when I thought I was drifting into sleep, a knock came on my door. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up on the bed. The door opened, it was Caine. “Long night?” He asked, walking into my room. I sighed, collapsing on my bed. “How’s Jerry?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. They were beginning to feel heavy with sleep, but with Caine in my room, I knew my day had just begun. “He’s recovering well. Just the…you know…” he said, helping himself to a chair opposite my bed. I sat back up, holding my banging head with both hands. “Cool,” I dragged. “I came t
JASMINES POV “Where do we start from?” I asked Natalia, slowly walking to the glass while I maintained eye contact with her. “Trust,” she blurted, standing up and walking to the edge of the glass. I halted in front of her, a smile crawling up my lips. “Trust is the last thing you could ask for from me,” I replied, holding the gaze until he nodded with her hands going up in the air. “I’d understand. I mean who would want to trust me after going through that betrayal from her mother,” “She did it to keep me safe,” I defended my mom despite how it hurt me to know about all this. But I guess Natalia could see beneath my words of defense like she knew I was broken. “Did she? I mean…look at the damage she has caused you. She’s made you look weak…you’ve become a mockery…so much for someone who falls under…” “Answers,” I interrupted, holding back the tears in my eyes. The lock of the door clicked from outside, and I quickly took a glance at the key hanging in my trousers. Someone el
