JASMINES POV

The barrel of the gun aimed at me felt grander than it looked. My heart pounded in my chest, but I forced myself to meet the gaze of the brown-haired lady.

“Listen…you’ve got the wrong people,” I started, my voice calm despite the storm brewing in me. “We are just workers at the diner…”

“Quit the lies or I’ll blow your eyes off,” she fired, her fingers twitching on the trigger. My hands returned to the air, trembling as my mind raced to figure out what else to say, “Save those lies,” she snapped, taking careful steps forward.

“You think it’s my first time dealing with wolves? I know what you are I know what you do! The fake lives. The lies, the masks you wear to blend in,” she paused, her eyes flicking from me to Caine, then back to me.

Caine shifted to my front, holding my other hand behind him. “You don’t want to do this,” he said, his voice low but firm. “Killing the wrong people won’t bring those you’ve lost,”

“But it will give me peace!” She snapped, and I saw tears trickling down her eyes. She reached for her pocket and took out a picture. “Look at him!” She yelled, waving the picture at our faces. “You creatures took him away from me!”

The man in the picture was familiar—I recognized him to be the man who received us into the camp and gave us his tent. Cold chills ran down my spine as his warm gestures filled my memory.

“We are sorry about your loss, but you’ll end up doing something wrong. Something you’ll regret…”

“I don’t care about right or wrong anymore!” She yelled, interrupting me. “All I care about is justice. And if I have to go through a few innocents to find the guilty, so be it,” she hissed.

“Look,” I tried again, desperate to buy time for Caine to come up with an idea. “You’re hunting wolves, right? We could help you. My friend and I. We know dozens of them. What do think?” I asked.

She laughed, a cold, humorless sound. “You take me for a fool, don’t you?” Her gaze flicked from me to Caine. The distant sound of a siren made her focus falter, and I guess that was the second Caine wanted.

Before she could return her gaze to us, Caine swiftly grabbed the gun from her and locked both of her hands behind her. She stepped on him aggressively, bit his flesh, and slipped out of his grip.

The gun fell a distance away from the two of them as they engaged in a fight. She was too fast and strong for a human, dodging most of Caine’s hits.

“The gun!” I heard Caine’s voice in my head. With a little hesitation, I grabbed the gun from the floor and aimed it at her. She froze, letting go of Caine who was locked in her arm.

“Go ahead. Kill me just like you did my parents,” she breathed, her voice laced with defeat and sadness. My hand dropped slowly, leaving the gun to fall into Caine’s hands. The sirens got louder, the tires of the police vans squealing as they headed our direction.

The girl raced to a black bike by the side of the diner and mounted it. She ignited its engine and glanced at us. “This isn’t over,” she said before speeding off.

Caine flung the gun into the woods and grabbed my hands.

“Quick, we can’t afford the cops finding us here,” he said. He raced through an alley by the side of the diner and popped out at the front where his car was packed. Imani and the rest were gone by then.

“Where do you think they are?” I asked, jumping into the passenger seat.

“At home, Jerry hates hospitals,” Caine ignited the engine and drove off.

When we got to the pack house, I found more cars than usual parked in the garage. Seemed weird, but I thought it was too early to start raising suspicions.

“What’s my dad doing here?” Caine muttered as we dismounted. We went into the house only to meet a council of wolves—the alphas council.

“Dad?” I spotted my father, but he didn’t respond. His expression was mixed with pity—for me.

“We’d like to have a conversation with you,” Alpha Morgan said, leading the way into his car. I was driven to his home and walked into his office. With just two of us standing in the room, I feared he might be able to hear how hard and fast my heartbeat was.

“Quite an exploit you’ve had,” he broke the silence as he paced from pillar to pillar. “Sit,” he instructed. The door opened and my father walked in, escorted by a few guards.

“Have I done something wrong?” I was forced to ask, the tension and curiosity in the room growing on me.

My father ignored my questions and sat opposite the alpha.

“What have I done?”

“The question is…what haven’t you done?” Alpha Morgan corrected, his gaze lingering on me for a moment. His eyes had this way of forcing words out of my mouth, and once again, it worked.

“I had no idea the smoothies had wolf’s bane in it. If I did I wouldn’t have served it to them. Moreover, they are Caine’s friends, and I wouldn’t want to hurt them. You can ask around…I’m not that…”

“Jasmine,” my father put a pause on my running tongue, allowing me to catch my breath. I exhaled, leaning back in my chair. The room was filled with silence once again, and I found myself trying to understand why they weren’t punishing me yet.

“We know you didn’t do that. You can’t hurt anyone,” my father said with a smile, glancing at the alpha whose gaze was fixed on me.

“Okay….so…what then?” I dragged my words.

My dad took his time to answer me, his hands flipping through the green old book he’d given Caine and me a few days ago.

“It’s about your mother,” he answered, stopping at a page and redirecting his gaze at me.

“Mom? What…happened to my…to my mother,” I stuttered, fear filling up the holes in my heart. I could feel my eyes getting already. “Is she…is she,” I couldn’t say the words because I almost broke down.

“Far from that, young girl,” the Alpha chirped in. “I fear your mother kept secrets from your fatter. From the pack”.

“Secrets?” I repeated, looking at my father to see if he was listening to the alpha. He was, and that heightened my anxiety. “How?”

“Sweetheart,” my father called my attention. “We fear your mother might have lied about being human”.

It just doesn’t make any sense to me,” he added. But that wasn’t what I wanted to hear. My mother, not human? How were they expecting me to believe that a woman who raised me and whom I lived with for years wasn’t human? “Alpha?” “Your dad and I are still doing research, Jasmine. However, I have a question for you,” he said, sitting up in his chair. I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat and stole a glance at Caine who was standing outside the door. “Where were you the night of the massacre?” He asked. He interrupted my attempt to speak. “Now before you fill me in on how you were with my son all day, we all know that part of the story. What I want to know now, is where you were in the night of the massacre,” he added. I furrowed my brows, trying to get a hold of my thoughts which were

To my surprise, even with the nose of a gun placed on my forehead, I didn’t back down. “Let me go! You’re going to get arrested for this!” I growled, yelling in her palm which covered my mouth. She dragged me by the hair and threw me to the floor. Without giving me a chance to get myself, she kicked my torso and dragged my legs. “One last chance, girl!” She growled, pointing the gun at me. My heart was in a race, my sweat mixed with my tears and they streamed down my face. “I’m…I’m the wrong person. To be locked up like you’re some kind of…slave…” he started. I looked away from his eyes, focusing my gaze on the door which he left slightly open. “Jasmine…” “Leave…” “Look…I’m sorry about what I said earlier, okay?” He apologized. “I didn’t mean to. The base was already surrounded by the police and wolf guards, waiting for a command to engage. “Hurry, this way,” Caine called, pulling my hands towards another path. We ducked under the branches and raced through the foliage, the distant shouts and blaring of the sirens drawing closer. My heart hammered in my heart as adrenaline coursed through my nerves, pushing every muscle in me to run faster. Caine glanced over the trees above us, pausing for a second as we took a scan of the environment around us. “Do you even know where we are going?” I asked, hyperventilating as I grabbed my knees. “We’ll lose them if we can make it to the stream. There’s a tunnel at the bank which leads directly into the pack house. I could sneak you into a car and drive you back to my father's house,” Caine said, withdrawing from where he

My wolf stirred weakly, groaning against the effects of the silver bullet lodged deep in me. After a while of having a blurred vision, the walls surrounding me became clear. “Thought you wouldn’t make it,” a voice sneered, snapping me completely into the moment. My eyes followed the sound of the voice and I found her standing by the window opposite where I was. I struggled to stand, but the metals binding my skin burned deep, frying my flesh. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” she said and turned to me. It was her—-the wolf hunter. I ignored what she said and struggled again, trying to ignore the pains from the silver burn. I growled, giving up as I felt my wolf wince in my head. “What do you want?” I rasped the taste of blood on my tongue. “Answers. I want answers, Caine,” she replied, covering the gap between us. It was almost an hour since we left the pack house to search for him. A blue truck pulled up, and I saw Spencer behind the wheel. “Spencer…oh thank God,” I muttered and got out of the car. Not that I was happy to see him, but at least people Caine other than myself just pulled up, and their assistance might help us find him faster. What way did he go?” Spencer asked, walking up to me. “Jas?” Lucy ran from the other side of the car into my arms. We hugged for a while before she pulled away and started running her hands around my body. “You’re okay…thank goodness. Where’s my boyfriend? Where’s Caine?” She asked, hyperventilating. “His body was… was urm…taken from the scene last night,” I answered, attempting to pull her into a hug. I still couldn’t get my eyes off the door of his office. My dad was in there with a Seeker, how confident was the alpha to let just the two of them stay in there? “We need to build trust to know before we strike. In the meantime, I want you all to find Caine. I know he’s still out there,” Alpha Morgan said, finally letting go of my hand. He crouched and unlocked the device on my ankle. “You’re…free to go with them. Your father believes you won’t cause any harm, so I want to believe in that too. Dave will join you guys. Find my son and bring him home,” he said, holding my shoulder. He turned to Lucy who was whimpering on Imani’s shoulder. “Hey, come here,” he said softly, taking her into his arms. “We’ll find him, okay? We’ll find him,” he console

His gaze was fixed on the girl who was being led by the twins. “Isha, the last of their circle,” I told my dad. “By circle, you mean family?” My dad asked and I nodded. His face still had doubt written all over it. “But she’s not human,” he said. I shrugged, leaning closer to him. “I believe there’s a story behind that. Caine was still answering a call at the garage while I pulled Lucy to a corner. “That’s him,” I blurted. “Him? What do you mean by him?” “My ex, Lucy, Bryan. That’s him,” I clarified. My heart raced, my blood boiling as I mistakenly looked into his eyes. He looked away immediately, and I knew that guilt was eating him up. “Your…ex? That Bryan?” “Yes, Lucy, that's Bryan,” I answered. “Okay, chill. He’s been my work partner for a while now. I never knew he was the Bryan you were talking about,” Lucy snapped. She noticed that wasn’t going to get me calm, so instead, she took my hands and pulled me closer to her. “Hey, nothing is going on between us, he’s just a colleague. I am with Caine, remember?” She asked. I didn’t want to give her a response, but the way she looked into my eyes demanded one. I nodded consecutively. “Yeah, yeah,” I breathed. “An

We stood for almost ten minutes, waiting for Adrian to finish up with his meal. When he was finally done, he crept out from the darkness, the red eyes still glowing as he made himself visible. I felt tears brewing in my eyes as I stood up and tossed a jacket to him. “Put these on”. “How long has he been this way,” Bryan asked, helping me with the empty blood bags. “A month, two or three weeks. I can’t really tell. All I know is that there was something wrong with him the last time I went home,” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” Adrian interrupted, walking out of the darkness completely. He exhaled, slowly opening his eyes. The red was gone, likewise the rage. “Dad did something new, and for the first time it worked,” “For the first time?” I asked, trying to process what he meant. “Have there been other trials, Adrian?” “Yeah…they all

I fell on my butt, wincing in pain. “Oh my…Luce, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to,”“Stay away from me,” I yelled, stopping him with an extended palm. I took my time on the floor, thinking of what lie to give to him so he wouldn’t go asking questions. “Lucy…I didn’t mean to hit you in that manner,” he apologized, taking further steps closer to me. He gestured with his head for us to walk with him, and we didn’t stop until we were out of the crime scene, standing amid police vans and ambulances. I knew what he wanted to say just by looking at him. “Look, I’m sorry uncle, I just had to call in this favor. I understand you’ve helped us a lot of times, and my dad probably owes you for the countless favors you have rendered…”“Kid…”“Just…please. This is more like an outbreak than a crime scene. He started by not meeting his wolf when he was younger, by hanging out in the human world, and always sneaking out of the house. According to my father, he got into more trouble than we could count. JASMINES POVI was too wasted to act. I just sat there, letting the chaos around me do its thing. My head fell to the chair, watching as the ceiling traveled in circles. I thought I saw some runes on them, calling into me with its blue glowing light. They looked pretty, and I extended my hands, wishing I could float in the air and know what they felt like. But the music in the room died down, cutting my solemn moment short.“Let’s go, Jasmine,” I heard Caines voice. He sounded muffled, and I couldn’t see his face. “You’re drunk, how much did you have to drink?” He asked, throwing my hand around his shoulder and grabbing me from the waist. I knew what was happening around me, but at the same time, I didn’t. For a second I thought I was levitating, but then whenever I looked at Caine, that hope was gone. I didn’t feel sad or anything, just…empty. For once., nothing bothered me. Caine led me out of the room, and to stop my eyes from hurting, I closed them and rested my head on his sh

JASMINES POVI pressed my hand against my chest, leaning on the side of the wall as my mind spiraled out of control. Thoughts flew in like my mind was a passageway for them, causing my breath to come out ragged. A lot had happened in just what?—three days? And yet there was still someone downstairs calling me a murderer. How was I supposed to face all these while trying to focus on what wolf I would train? Not to speak of my father's deal with Natalia. I heaved a sigh, halted before my mirror, and ran my hands down my hair. The echoes of laughter and muffled sounds of music traveled into my room, it was a room party which I was informed about but declined. But I couldn’t stay in my room, not with all these thoughts running into my head. I needed a distraction, and the room party just seemed like it.With a little touch on my face and hair, I made my way to the room. Room 27. I pulled Isha off her and flung her to the feet of her brothers. “Keep your eyes on her!” I yelled at them. For a second, I thought I saw the disappointment in their eyes. They helped Isha up, holding her still despite her aggressive kicks to be set free and yolk her into the living room. “Are you okay?” I extended my hand to help her up. “Yeah,” she coughed, almost falling back on my shoulder. Lucy stepped in between us. “I’ll take her from here,” she said, pulling Jasmine away from me. We all went into the living room but were divided. Jojo and Lucy were with Jasmine, while Harper, Spencer, and Imani were with Isha. I could already sense trouble coming hard at us. “She killed them,” Isha cried, sobbing in the arms of her brothers. “We’ll deal with that later, Isha,” I tried to keep her calm, but that made her angrier. That was when I realized the sun was out. I’d spent all night pondering on Natalia’s words. I wanted to come down from my bed and feed my thirst, but my body isn't encouraging. I needed rest, even if it was for an hour or two. I shut my eyes, hoping to sleep this time. And just when I thought I was drifting into sleep, a knock came on my door. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up on the bed. The door opened, it was Caine. “Long night?” He asked, walking into my room. I sighed, collapsing on my bed. “How’s Jerry?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. They were beginning to feel heavy with sleep, but with Caine in my room, I knew my day had just begun. “He’s recovering well. Just the…you know…” he said, helping himself to a chair opposite my bed. I mean who would want to trust me after going through that betrayal from her mother,” “She did it to keep me safe,” I defended my mom despite how it hurt me to know about all this. But I guess Natalia could see beneath my words of defense like she knew I was broken. “Did she? I mean…look at the damage she has caused you.
