SIX YEARS LATER
I opened the door to the house I once left and promised to never come back.
But here I was standing in the middle of the empty living room and looking for the one man I swore to hate for the rest of my life.
Last I heard, his mate died from a rouge attack in the pack and now my dad was mateless and wife-less.
Alone, lonely and drowning himself in work as usual.
Karma was a real bitch they said and I was witnessing.
“Dad” I called to the man who was lying motionless in his bedroom staring at the ceiling.
The house he once abandoned us, and even after we left he never called.
“Jasmine, hey.” He laughed happily and stood up to hug me but his movements were slow, he had aged over the last six years.
Slowly he let go of the hug but didn't let go of my hand.
“How’re you?” I asked him, smiling a little and happy to see him.
After my mother remarried, I figured it was time to let go of my grudges and I did.
I had forgiven my dad already but I didn't know if I could ever forget the pain he caused us.
“I’m getting by” he said with a lazy shrug.
I searched his face for any emotion and all I could see was hurt, he looked weak.
Like I did before.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t attend her funeral” I said, gently rubbing his coarse hand.
He smiled and looked away, trying to hide his pain.“It’s cool. Not every mates we’re meant to be, besides after how much of a shitty person I’ve been to you and your mother I didn’t expect any of you to be there. How is she by the way? Your mother” he asked changing the subject.
My face brightened as I thought of her.
“Expecting a second child and happy with her new husband that she don’t even remember I exist” I said and we both laughed but there was an iota of truth in what I said.
After my mother met the current love of her life and remarried four years ago, she moved out of the house and now I was all alone and by myself.
“I’m sorry about that honey” my dad said and I smiled.
“It’s fine, she’s happy and she deserves to be happy, I don’t have to get in the way”
We both were dealing with different ways of loss.
“You’re our child, you are not getting in the way of anything” he told me and I sighed.
He had six years to show that to me and he failed.
“Hmm” I nodded awkwardly.
“What about you? Are you happy?” My father suddenly asked me and I chuckled lowly.
“I’m getting by” I said and we both laughed
“Bryan cheated on me” I announced.
“That fucker”
“Yeah, stupid fucker” I said in agreement and we both laughed again.
I had told him about the boy I met in college in a letter I sent to him one time, a letter he never replied.
“I found texts of him booking up with the other woman, her thong in his car, and even the cabin he bought for the both of them” I told my father.
“Oh boy, I wish I could pay him a visit” I saw him grit his jaw, the same way someone I knew from before always did when he was angry.
“But you can’t now can you?” I taunted him.
“Unfortunately” he said sadly and I tried to change the subject.
“Well, I just needed time off everything In Atlanta and here I am” I said with a loud exhale.
“I’m happy you’re here baby” Joseph said and kissed my hand.
I quickly noticed the big bandage on his rib cage.
“How did that happen?” I pointed to the wound.
“We were attacked, the border was infiltrated. It happened too sudden and Caine thinks there’s a mole in the pack”
That name suddenly ticked something in my head.
“Oh, Caine” I muttered.
“Yeah, that juvenile delinquent grew up to become responsible. He’s about to take over from his father soon” my dad looked a little proud talking about the boy who made my last days in this town a living hell.
“Oh”
He was living his life happy and here I was crawling back In misery.
“You changed a lot, I barely recognized you” my father said bringing me back from reverie.
“Yeah, you never checked up in six years” I blurted out before I could even think of what I was saying.
His smile dropped and his hold on my hand became more firm.
“Jaz, I….”
“Do you know where I can find Lucy?” I hurriedly interrupted him and pulled my hands away.
I was just here to take a break and take care of him, not rehash of feelings I didn't want to remember.
He sighed and held his side in visible agony before propping pillows up and settling back into them.
I made no move to help him.
“Uh, you might want to ask her Aunty or Maria, she knows where everyone is in town” he said and I laughed at the mention of those two lovely women.
“Maria, lord knows how she looks now” I thought aloud.
“Still agile with the same sharp and pretty mouth” my dad replied and my face scrunched in amusement.
“Sharp and pretty mouth? Dad since when did you start seeing Maria that way?” I teased him as I picked up my bag.
“Since forever, we grew up in this town together. Don’t get any ideas now” he rolled his eyes playfully and both of us laughed.
“Mhmmm. I’ll clean up and get changed then go out to catch up with Lucy. We’ll go to the hospital in the evening, how about that?" I told him and he nodded in agreement.
"I'm so glad you're back baby" Joseph said right before I left the room.
"I don't know how I feel about being back here" I curtly replied before leaving to my room.
I hated the room and the memories it held, mostly because I was always crying to sleep or drawing in sadness.
So, I hurriedly took my bathe, changed my clothes and soon I was out of the house in search of my best friend whom I had not seen in six years.
When I got to her house, she was not around as usual but Elena Landers was so elated to see me.
We had tea for a while, while I filled her in on my life and that of my mother's, by the time our tea was cold she directed me to the garage close the Maria's dinner.
"Tell her to come home early" Elena sent me with a message to Lucy.
I agreed to tell her and tried to find my way to the new garage which was not where it was now when I was in the pack.
I finally found my way to the garage, and there around one car, some boys gathered talking distinctly and I figured they were my only shot at finding Lucy now.
So, I strutted to them in my white V necked crop top which was a little sheer, low rise boot cut jeans which showed my lean stomach and high heel.
“Hello boys, you know where I can find Lucy..." I trailed off as familiar faces came out behind the bonnet of the car to face me.
Jerry, Harper, Imani, Jojo, Spencer and him.
“Campbell?” The spanner which had been dancing on his finger slowed to a stop and clattered on the floor noisily.
The rest of the boys and the two girls around stared at me, wide eyed and open mouthed.
I hated all of them and so I ignored them.
“Creek”
I was not happy to see him.
JASMINEThe silence that followed was deafening, almost scaring me out of my position. Caine stood before me, eyes seeing around like he’d just found a lost treasure. “I’m searching for Lucy. Any idea where she might be?” I asked, exchanging glances with the rest of the group. “Errands,” Caine replied. His voice sounded thicker and deeper than the last time we spoke. “Ohh…when she returns please tell her I stopped by,” I said to him and turned to leave. “Jasmine,” he called. I halted in my tracks and turned to him. He seemed to be contemplating approaching me. At first I thought he was seeking approval from the rest of the gang. Hell no. He was freaking Caine Creek. He didn’t need anyone’s approval. He gestured for them to leave, which they did. “You…just show up from nowhere after how many years?” He asked, covering the gap between us. There was no need to be scared this time. I was better than the last time we stood this close. The closer he got, the harder my heart raced. I
JASMINEThe tension between us was undeniable and I cursed myself for even acknowledging it. Caine leaned against the door frame, shirtless with his hands folded across his chest. His eyes scanned me all over again, like he was trying to figure me out all over again. “I’ll wait outside then,” I said to him and turned around to leave. “Maybe you haven’t heard but the pack is not as safe as when you left. We get surprise attacks at any time of the day. People go missing, dead bodies sprawl out of the ground almost every morning yet, no one has answers to these happenings,”“I’ll advise you to come in and wait,” he finally made his point. I won’t lie, the mention of getting attacked at any time of the day sent my heart racing. With a deep, regrettable sigh, I took another turn and made my way into the house. He locked the door and joined me shortly after putting on a shirt. The room was surprisingly clean for a guy like Caine. He wasn’t this arranged six years ago. I perched at the ed
JASMINEThe room erupted into chaos. Everyone shot up from their seats, the chairs screeching as we hurried towards Spencer. Caine led the way, getting to Spencer before the rest of us. “What happened?” He asked, helping him in. I checked outside the door to confirm there was no one else out there. It was clear. “The diner,” Spencer choked on his blood. “He needs to be attended to. Clear the table,” I assisted Caine to carry him. The rest stood, looking at me to confirm if I was actually dishing out orders to them. “You heard her!” Caine barked as we hurried across the room carrying Spencer. Imani and Jojo cleared the table, giving me the opportunity to get down to a work I had learnt on my own and practiced with Bryan. “Take his clothes off,” I told Jojo before rushing to get a bowl of water. After my mother moved in with her new family, her whole attention focused on them, I found ways to defend myself. I learnt how to stand up for myself, defend myself and treat my wounds. I
JASMINEMy eyes fluttered open, leaving me with a blurred vision a few seconds. My ears picked the sound of indistinct chattering coming from somewhere around the dark room. I’ve barely been back here and they won’t let me breathe properly. As my vision cleared, so did my hearing. It wasn’t just chattering. They were moans. Loud and clear. The girl…sounded so much like Imani. But I recalled the tone of the voice that knocked me into unconsciousness. It was masculine. “Right there Jerry,” the Imani moaned, loud kisses following after. Why did she sound like he was torturing her. To mage it worst, they were in plain sight, having sex infront of me. Couldn’t they hold themselves until they got somewhere closed? And what wasn’t I understanding? Imani is supposed to be with Jojo. Or did something change in their cycle of relationships? She went down on her knees, taking in his cock which just slipped out of her vagina. I swallowed, feeling every nerve in my body twisting against the sigh
JASMINEI froze on my seat, my fork clattering as it fell on my plate. Caine Creek! Of all people my father had to choose him? My mind raced, piecing together every awkward moment were spent together since I returned. It seemed like the more I tried to avoid him, the more he got involved in my business. “Father, you can’t be serious,” I objected, pushing my way away from the seat. His brows furrowed, but he kept his voice calm. “Jasmine, Caine is your best shot at getting control over your wolf. You can’t keep depending on…this,” he referred to the wolf guide. “Moreover it’s an honor to have the son of the alpha be your personal trainer,” “What…” I swallowed my next words after my voice took a higher pitch. I pulled my father to a side of the house backing the door and muttered in low tones. “What honor? Caine is so close to Lucy and the last thing I want is getting caught up in some drama,” “Are you looking at what you stand to gain or what training with Caine would cause you?”
JASMINEWhat? Is he insane?I stood dumbfounded, staring at Caine as he looked back at me. This had to be a joke! Yes, a joke, but I found myself wanting it all to be an actual training.“I’m just kidding Jasmine,” he chuckled, sending a wave of relief down my nerves. I swallowed so hard that I feared he heard it. “Really, Caine?” I blurted. “So much of “he’s a changed boy,” I mimicked my fathers tone with a voice below a whisper. I corked a brow as he lifted his face, hanging his belt on his shoulder. “There are rules. First…” he said, his tone firm. “You’ll show up on time. No excuses. Second…you’ll do exactly as I say. When I say run, you run. When I tell you to fight, you fight. Thirdly, every wolf in our age bracket is to get a job. For you..” he delayed, leaving me in suspense. “For me?” “I’ll come up with a job to be assigned to you. Currently there are about thirty-nine trainees with their sub-coaches and head coaches. You’re making them thirty. And tomorrow night, you a
“Answer the question, Imani,” Jojo fired. It wasn’t a scene I enjoyed—watching Jojo being so “alpha-male ish” before Imani. I saw the way she was fidgeting. It was obvious she feared jojo. It was something more than his physical appearance which made him look like a Greek god. “Why would you believe the words of jasmine?” Imani asked. Her courage was building up, and you couldn't help but stare and enjoy the show. The rest of the group joined us at the pool after hearing Jojo's voice. They knew better than to interfere with whatever it was. “I have to get back home,” I muttered , breaking the silence growing at the pool as my work there was gone. “You’re going nowhere until you explain what you said to Imani,” Jojo hurried to my front and stood in my way. I sighed, rolling my eyes away from him. “Go on!” “Don’t…speak to me in that manner, Jojo. You might perceive me to be weak but I am nothing compared to Imani, your…” I didn’t complete my sentence the moment my eyes rested
CAINES POV I wandered around the pack house to ensure everyone was in before I returned to my room. Lucy was out again, without leaving information on her whereabouts. It had become a usual occurrence. Leaving the pack house and returning whenever she liked. I went into my room, ready to have my rest when my phone rang. It was Harper. I answered the call but took the phone off my ear immediately. “Dude, where are you?” I asked, gently placing the phone back. “Jojo is coming to get you. You’ve been too serious these days and you need to have a time to chill,” he answered and ended the call. As much as I didn’t want to admit it, Spencer was right. I’d let the pack duties get to me. I was trying to be that perfect example my father had described my younger brother as. It felt like an insult, being compared to a fifteen year old teenager. It wasn’t easy however, switching sides from being the high school’s bad boy to becoming the pack's watchman. But if that’s what it’ll take fo
JASMINES POVI stood before the mirror, staring at my reflection. Time had passed since the last servant came to inform us that the car was waiting. I’d completely lost myself in my reflection. The woman staring back at me was different. Someone I’d long admired to be. I let out a sigh, taking the veil off my face. “Are we ready?” I asked Alyssa who was still gathering a few things from her bag. “Yes…just these little things I have to get them we’ll move,’ he said.I didn’t mind, because I felt like I had all the time in the world. I was willing to stand before the mirror, simply staring at myself and the baby bump that was evident from the white gown I had on. Two knocks landed on the door, and it creaked open. From the mirror, I saw my mother. “Mum,” I called under my breath. She told me that she wasn’t going to make it because she was still taking care of her husband. Seeing her here sent chills down my spine. I strode hurriedly across the room, but she covered more space tha
JASMINES POVI walked into the cemetery where Lucy’s body was buried. Carrying my flowers in one hand and holding Caine in the other. It was a month after her death, and as much as I tried to deny it, I could feel the void in my heart. She occupied somewhere in my heart, despite the betrayal and hatred, and I just couldn’t bring myself to deny that fact. Caine wasn’t in support of my going to visit the cemetery, but I insisted. I had to remind him of Lucy’s parents whom they locked up and weren’t able to pay their daughter a visit at her grave, nor did they have a chance to see them lower her into the ground. She was a villain, yes—but also a human being. “I’ll wait out here,” Caine said. I didn’t argue. We disconnected our hands, and he kissed me before letting me off. Caine was still a work in progress. He was taking on a new personality, one that was completely in contrast to who he was before the accident. His memories were not completely back, but each day, with my presenc
CAINES POVThe next time I woke up, I couldn’t move my hands or legs. I scanned the room area after getting a clearer vision. The smell of wolf’s bane was strong in the air, and that explained why I felt weak. “You’re finally up, welcome to the party,” Lucy drew my attention to her. She was crouched beside Jasmine, and something about that position upset my wolf. He wanted to defend Jasmine, to stand up for her. But our strength was sealed. “Get away from her. Who are you?” I gritted.“It’s so sad that it had to be your memory that was lost. A part of me wished you died that night,” she blurted. “What?” I asked. Then I understood what she was talking about. My accident. “That girl…Elara right?” She chuckled. “She was this close to figuring out. If only she’d been smart,”I groaned, pulling against my restraints. “You killed her!” I yelled. But only a sinister smile played on her face as she moved from Jasmine to me. “You can’t do anything, Caine, not even now. You couldn’t even
CAINES POVThe call dropped.I yanked the phone from my ear, staring at the screen as static hummed in my ears. The connection had been lost.Jasmine’s voice still rang in my head, breathless and desperate.I’m pregnant—with your child.I shot up from my chair so fast it clattered against the floor. My wolf was raging beneath my skin, demanding action, demanding I find her.Just then, a car drove in. I moved to the window to see who it was. Lucy. My eyes drifted to the clock, and it was a few minutes past twelve. The sky was completely dark, and the moon was hanging with a moonlight under the cloud. “She sounded scared…and urgent…” I thought. All of a sudden, my wolf was full of rage. The fragment of memory that I had tried to remember felt like it was fighting its way up. But distractions. Lucy was coming up, and I had to confirm my suspicions. I reached for my phone and sent a text to Beta Joseph, telling him to track my phone and find me if anything happened. I sent the same
JASMINE’S POVThe moment the door shut behind them, I let out a shaky breath, my body sagging against the chair. My arms ached from the restraints, my head pounding from exhaustion, but none of it compared to the sharp pain radiating through my stomach. The warmth of my blood soaked into my dress was a terrifying reminder of just how much danger I was in.I glanced at the table where Lucy had tossed her phone. It was my only chance. My eyes drifted back to the door after I heard a sound. I thought they were coming back, so I curled back into my tears. After a few seconds of waiting, and no one came through the door, I let out a heavy sigh, staring at the phone. Desperation fueled me as I forced my body forward. I fell from the chair and crashed my face on the floor. Shock coursed through my face, sending my head and my brain pulsing with the taste of blood that circulated in my mouth. I ignored the pain, keeping my eyes focused on the phone that lay on the table. I started crawlin
LUCY'S POVI slammed the brakes, drifting the car out of the garage. I saw Caine standing at the edge of the hallway through the rear mirror. His gaze was fixed on the car, his body still as I drove off. I knew he was getting suspicious, and it was only a matter of time before he came searching or digging for answers. I drove into the silence that filled the night, a clear contrast to the storm of thoughts that raged in my mind. I’d asked for dinner with them because I started noticing the low murmuring when I wasn’t looking. They were getting suspicious, questioning my whereabouts and my lateness to the events and important meetings. I also noticed how distant I had become due to the plans Bryan had and the hitches we experienced over the month. Recently, a few days back or so, Adrian went on a hunting spree, killing tons of humans and werewolves. According to my parents, he was facing the likelihood of the breakout of another disease all because he hadn’t found someone who was
CAINE’S POVThe silence that filled the room was suffocating. The way all eyes drifted to me, I knew I shouldn’t have uttered those words. I took a little drift away from Lucy’s stare, traveling my eyes around the room. The eyes of others carried a heavy weight, like a secret, lurking behind them. I made sure I observed all before returning my gaze to Lucy. Unlike others, and unlike the first time the question was asked, she was smiling. What changed?Wasn’t she curious to know what changed?”“Go on, Caine. Why don’t you tell us? Are we supposed to be expecting someone else,” she asked again. The rest returned to their meal, the forks clanging softly against their plates. Even their eyes were buried into their plates, and it felt like they were expecting some kind of outburst of something—a quarrel perhaps. “Are you okay mate?” Harper nudged me, Snapping me out of my zone. I forced a smile, nodding hurriedly.“Of course. I just didn’t spot Joanne in time. My sight I guess.” lie
JASMINES POVThe light shuffling of feet and the muffled voices stirred me up from my sleep. Standing at the edge of the room Bryan, talking with Adrian. They were discussing in lie tones, but Bryan seemed to be angrier. “You led them here!” He yelled, pushing Adrian. For reasons best known to Adrian, he wasn’t getting angry just like Bryan. He maintained his cool, taking the blows and the blame. “Deal with it,” Bryan snapped. “It’s already been dealt with,” Adrian said finally. My vision blurred for a few seconds, and I blinked several times to get a clearer view. Silence fell in the room after Adrain spoke, safe for Bryan’s heavy breathing. “You what?”“They’ve been dealt with. And Lucy drove off with their bodies to bury them somewhere far,” he explained. With the I saw things, Bryan wasn’t in support of that. He took two steps forward, and the third step placed him directly in front of Adrian.“You killed the cops?” My breath hitched after hearing what the offense was.
CAINES POVIt was the second month since the arrest of Lilian. My father has been silent on the progress being made by my uncle and the rest of the investigation team—that’s if progress was being made. On the other hand, Natasha has been nothing but helpful. For reasons best known to her, she only let me discuss things I’d planned for and my father eventually left. She stood in as my therapist. On the other hand, Lucy is awkwardly absent from the house. She leaves so early and comes back really late at night. When I asked, she attributed the return of her parents and her brother whom the police department was after. I walked out of bed, moved to the mirror, and ran my fingers through the bandage on my head. Two months had come, and gone, yet I still couldn’t get an answer to the most bothersome question in my mind. Why Jasmine?A few days ago, I asked my father. I wanted to know why she was the only name that kept recurring in my head. I noticed the way he tried to avoid the qu
