JASMINE
The room erupted into chaos. Everyone shot up from their seats, the chairs screeching as we hurried towards Spencer. Caine led the way, getting to Spencer before the rest of us. “What happened?” He asked, helping him in. I checked outside the door to confirm there was no one else out there. It was clear. “The diner,” Spencer choked on his blood. “He needs to be attended to. Clear the table,” I assisted Caine to carry him. The rest stood, looking at me to confirm if I was actually dishing out orders to them. “You heard her!” Caine barked as we hurried across the room carrying Spencer. Imani and Jojo cleared the table, giving me the opportunity to get down to a work I had learnt on my own and practiced with Bryan. “Take his clothes off,” I told Jojo before rushing to get a bowl of water. After my mother moved in with her new family, her whole attention focused on them, I found ways to defend myself. I learnt how to stand up for myself, defend myself and treat my wounds. I wasn’t always successful when it came to defending myself. Especially when I encountered the street thugs. They preyed on young ladies, had sex with them and threw them in the bin by the road. I almost fell victim that particular night before I was saved by Bryan. I mixed some supplements present in the kitchen which had healing abilities and helped myself with a thread. Imani presented the first aid box to me. “I believe this would help,” she muttered, taking a stand beside Jojo and the rest who were staring in agony. “Keep your eyes on the door,” Caine instructed them. I took the scissors and a cloth lying beside it. “I’ll want you to bite down on this, Spencer. It’s going to hurt,” I said, loving the sound of that. Even if I wasn’t the cause of his injury, and regardless of the fact that I was the one treating him, I so much enjoyed watching him cry like a child. This was karma, and he was the first to taste out of it. Spencer’s scream filled the room the moment I began stitching the wound. His flesh squelched, oozing a lot of blood which made me fear that he wasn’t going to make it. Yet, I chose to continue. After a few minutes of stitching and screaming, the tension in the room died, leaving a long dwelling silence. I could literally see the fear in their eyes as they stood holding each other and watching. Caine was with Lucy who seemed to be the most frightened. The way she clung onto him made my heart leap. They were so close that I could feel the heat between them. I snapped myself out of that thought, realizing it was creating a different picture about my best friend in my head. “He’s lost a lot of blood. He needs rest,” I muttered, washing my hands before making my way out of the room. What was supposed to be a peaceful, noisy dinner turned into a blood-painted room. ***** One thing I didn’t mention was the trauma seeing Spencer in that manner had caused me. A memory I thought had taken full control of. I wasn’t a doctor, neither was a nurse. Yet, Bryan and his pack members looked up to me as one. The very day I was to put all that hope and respect to its best turned out to be the day I lost a young child in my arms. He’d gone hunting in the woods with his family when they got attacked. He was rushed to the house, where I got down to work on him. I guess luck wasn’t on my side that day. I shut my eyes, letting the cool night breeze blow against my face as tears streamed down my eyes. “That was…one hell of a show,” Caine’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts. I hurriedly wiped the tears from my eyes and sulked in. Never was I going to appear weak before him or any of those spoilt brats who bullied me. “I brought you water,” he offered. I glanced at the glass of water in his hand. I wanted it, but accepting it was like proving to him that I wanted him around. So I refused. “I’m doing great, thanks,” “You don’t sound like it,” he objected. “You know what? Why don’t you just leave me alone, Caine. The last thing I’d want is Lucy thinking there’s something going on between me and her boyfriend,” my voice went off with a raised pitch which was still moderate enough to not have drawn any attention to us. Caine burst into a silent laughter, moving in an unpatterned box until he came to a halt. “Ohh…Jaz!” He exclaimed with a breath. “What? Or are you two not dating?” I asked him. Silence followed after my question, and I was expecting a negative response. One part of me wanted to hear him deny being in a relationship with Lucy. The other part, didn’t care much. “We are,” he blurted, and I rolled my eyes away in order to hide my disappointment. Even if he wasn’t dating Lucy, was I going to make an approach towards him? I’d rather go back to Jamal than make Caine think there’s still a part of me that loves him or wants to chase after him. “Then I believe she should set boundaries. Four feet apart when discussing with any girl who isn’t her,” I stated judging based on the Lucy I knew six years ago. “Caine?” Lucy’s voice chirped in. “I was searching for you down stairs,” she said, eyes flicking from Caine to me. She kissed him on the lip and placed his hand around her waist before turning to me. “That was so incredible, Jaz. You’ve…really changed,” she smiled. I returned the smile, hiding the jealousy that sparked in my nerves after I saw them kiss. “It’s late, I should head home now. My father must be worried,” I lied. That was a man who must have traveled round the world of dreams by now, snoring his sorrow into the night. “Okay, cool,” “No, it’s not safe,” Caine refused. There was a weird glare between the two of them for a second. “Look, guys, I don’t mind. I can take care of myself,” I forced a smile. “Thank you, for dinner,” I added. Lucy and I shared a hug before I set out into the night. ‘Caine was right after all’, I thought to myself after walking a few meters away from the pack house. The pack wasn't as safe as before. Whosoever attacked Spencer must have been part of those who attacked my father and killed his mate. I clung onto my purse, forcing my cold feet as I walked through the night. My phone rang in my purse, alerting my mind from its thoughts. It was my father. I didn’t expect him to be awake by now. I reached for my phone, answered the call but was unable to place it on my ear. A hand snatched it from me, punched me in the guts and crashed my head with something strong. “The night just began, medium rare,” the voice echoed in my head before I went blank. ******JASMINEMy eyes fluttered open, leaving me with a blurred vision a few seconds. My ears picked the sound of indistinct chattering coming from somewhere around the dark room. I’ve barely been back here and they won’t let me breathe properly. As my vision cleared, so did my hearing. It wasn’t just chattering. They were moans. Loud and clear. The girl…sounded so much like Imani. But I recalled the tone of the voice that knocked me into unconsciousness. It was masculine. “Right there Jerry,” the Imani moaned, loud kisses following after. Why did she sound like he was torturing her. To mage it worst, they were in plain sight, having sex infront of me. Couldn’t they hold themselves until they got somewhere closed? And what wasn’t I understanding? Imani is supposed to be with Jojo. Or did something change in their cycle of relationships? She went down on her knees, taking in his cock which just slipped out of her vagina. I swallowed, feeling every nerve in my body twisting against the sigh
JASMINEI froze on my seat, my fork clattering as it fell on my plate. Caine Creek! Of all people my father had to choose him? My mind raced, piecing together every awkward moment were spent together since I returned. It seemed like the more I tried to avoid him, the more he got involved in my business. “Father, you can’t be serious,” I objected, pushing my way away from the seat. His brows furrowed, but he kept his voice calm. “Jasmine, Caine is your best shot at getting control over your wolf. You can’t keep depending on…this,” he referred to the wolf guide. “Moreover it’s an honor to have the son of the alpha be your personal trainer,” “What…” I swallowed my next words after my voice took a higher pitch. I pulled my father to a side of the house backing the door and muttered in low tones. “What honor? Caine is so close to Lucy and the last thing I want is getting caught up in some drama,” “Are you looking at what you stand to gain or what training with Caine would cause you?”
JASMINEWhat? Is he insane?I stood dumbfounded, staring at Caine as he looked back at me. This had to be a joke! Yes, a joke, but I found myself wanting it all to be an actual training.“I’m just kidding Jasmine,” he chuckled, sending a wave of relief down my nerves. I swallowed so hard that I feared he heard it. “Really, Caine?” I blurted. “So much of “he’s a changed boy,” I mimicked my fathers tone with a voice below a whisper. I corked a brow as he lifted his face, hanging his belt on his shoulder. “There are rules. First…” he said, his tone firm. “You’ll show up on time. No excuses. Second…you’ll do exactly as I say. When I say run, you run. When I tell you to fight, you fight. Thirdly, every wolf in our age bracket is to get a job. For you..” he delayed, leaving me in suspense. “For me?” “I’ll come up with a job to be assigned to you. Currently there are about thirty-nine trainees with their sub-coaches and head coaches. You’re making them thirty. And tomorrow night, you a
“Answer the question, Imani,” Jojo fired. It wasn’t a scene I enjoyed—watching Jojo being so “alpha-male ish” before Imani. I saw the way she was fidgeting. It was obvious she feared jojo. It was something more than his physical appearance which made him look like a Greek god. “Why would you believe the words of jasmine?” Imani asked. Her courage was building up, and you couldn't help but stare and enjoy the show. The rest of the group joined us at the pool after hearing Jojo's voice. They knew better than to interfere with whatever it was. “I have to get back home,” I muttered , breaking the silence growing at the pool as my work there was gone. “You’re going nowhere until you explain what you said to Imani,” Jojo hurried to my front and stood in my way. I sighed, rolling my eyes away from him. “Go on!” “Don’t…speak to me in that manner, Jojo. You might perceive me to be weak but I am nothing compared to Imani, your…” I didn’t complete my sentence the moment my eyes rested
CAINES POV I wandered around the pack house to ensure everyone was in before I returned to my room. Lucy was out again, without leaving information on her whereabouts. It had become a usual occurrence. Leaving the pack house and returning whenever she liked. I went into my room, ready to have my rest when my phone rang. It was Harper. I answered the call but took the phone off my ear immediately. “Dude, where are you?” I asked, gently placing the phone back. “Jojo is coming to get you. You’ve been too serious these days and you need to have a time to chill,” he answered and ended the call. As much as I didn’t want to admit it, Spencer was right. I’d let the pack duties get to me. I was trying to be that perfect example my father had described my younger brother as. It felt like an insult, being compared to a fifteen year old teenager. It wasn’t easy however, switching sides from being the high school’s bad boy to becoming the pack's watchman. But if that’s what it’ll take fo
CAINES POV The rest of the night passed in a blur of laughter, whispers and dares. I was careful enough not to get drunk, despite how many times I was made to drink after refusing so many dares. By the time I rested my head on Lucy’s shoulder, I was already feeling light headed. Even in that state, my mind still tethered to the dare Lucy had given to me. That was the only dare which stretched over weeks, and it was one the group wouldn’t forget in a hurry. To me, that dare wasn't just about Jasmine. It was Lucy’s way of treating my loyalty to her. I noticed the way she always stared at jasmine whenever she was looking away. Everyone had taken in the new her, but I knew how difficult it was for Lucy. Just when I thought the night was over, drunk Jojo pulled my hands, dragging me out of the chair. “Down to the club!” He sang, parading and jumping like a child. The club? “We’re not going into club 9. We shouldn’t be seen in there,” I tried to warn them as they marched forwar
CAINES POV A sharp throbbing pain shot at the back of my head as I stirred awake, the metallic tang of blood filling my mouth. My ears buzzed with the distant echoes of screams and shattering glasses. It took me a while to realize where I was—the men’s restroom, sprawled on the cold floor with my blood smeared around. I helped myself up, first meeting with my reflection on the mirror above the sink that was cracked. Blood trickled down my forehead, dripping onto the floor with steady beats. My wolf growled low within me, snapping me out of my pain and urging me to find her. The last thing I remembered was Lucy’s scream. I had no idea how long I’d laid on the floor, but I wasn’t going to let them leave the club with her. Dragging myself out of the restroom, I staggered down the stairs, holding my head in pain. I could still feel a piece of glass hiding beneath my head. I wiped the blood from my face with the back of my hand, forcing my vision to focus on the stairs which looked
CAINES POV The metallic scents of Jojo’s blood filled the air as I placed him on the table, applying pressure on the wound by his side. His breaths were shallow, his face pale and the blood gushing out from his torso wasn’t slowing down. Imani hovered around us, her hands wringing in the air. “What do we do? He’s losing so much blood! I don’t want to lose him,” she cried, sounding like she was about to have a panic attack. “Harper, get towels, Imani, boil some water!” I barked, my alpha instincts kicking in. For once, they didn’t question me or argue. They rushed off, doing as I instructed. Jojo groaned, his head tilting to the side. “It’s okay…I’ve seen worse. Just let me…” “Shut up!” I pressed harder on the wound, causing him to scream in pain. He ended with a chuckle, grabbing my hand as he shone his blood-stained teeth in a smile. “It’s too late,” he whizzed, coughing more blood on me. “No, it’s not,” I whispered. Not like I knew what I was doing, these were things I
JASMINE’S POV “Can I have a word with you?” I asked, stealing glances at Bryan who was looking out of the window. Caine was still answering a call at the garage while I pulled Lucy to a corner. “That’s him,” I blurted. “Him? What do you mean by him?” “My ex, Lucy, Bryan. That’s him,” I clarified. My heart raced, my blood boiling as I mistakenly looked into his eyes. He looked away immediately, and I knew that guilt was eating him up. “Your…ex? That Bryan?” “Yes, Lucy, that's Bryan,” I answered. “Okay, chill. He’s been my work partner for a while now. I never knew he was the Bryan you were talking about,” Lucy snapped. She noticed that wasn’t going to get me calm, so instead, she took my hands and pulled me closer to her. “Hey, nothing is going on between us, he’s just a colleague. I am with Caine, remember?” She asked. I didn’t want to give her a response, but the way she looked into my eyes demanded one. I nodded consecutively. “Yeah, yeah,” I breathed. “An
LUCY’S POV “Whatever this is, Luce, it’s not normal,” Bryan said, inching closer to me. I sighed, falling back on the wooden chair behind me. We stood for almost ten minutes, waiting for Adrian to finish up with his meal. When he was finally done, he crept out from the darkness, the red eyes still glowing as he made himself visible. I felt tears brewing in my eyes as I stood up and tossed a jacket to him. “Put these on”. “How long has he been this way,” Bryan asked, helping me with the empty blood bags. “A month, two or three weeks. I can’t really tell. All I know is that there was something wrong with him the last time I went home,” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” Adrian interrupted, walking out of the darkness completely. He exhaled, slowly opening his eyes. The red was gone, likewise the rage. “Dad did something new, and for the first time it worked,” “For the first time?” I asked, trying to process what he meant. “Have there been other trials, Adrian?” “Yeah…they all
LUCY'S POVMy heart skipped a beat as the bag fell from my shoulder, the blood bags which I had stolen from the pack clinic sprawling on the floor. “Oh my God! Caine!” I exclaimed, trying to hide the guilt as I started linking them up with a rush. I tossed them into the bag, not paying attention to whatever he was saying.“Lucy, I asked a question!” He pulled my shoulder, sending me to the floor. I fell on my butt, wincing in pain. “Oh my…Luce, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to,”“Stay away from me,” I yelled, stopping him with an extended palm. I took my time on the floor, thinking of what lie to give to him so he wouldn’t go asking questions. “Lucy…I didn’t mean to hit you in that manner,” he apologized, taking further steps closer to me. I burst into tears, burying my head in my legs. That was the first excuse I could garner from my thoughts, just so I’d have enough time to think. “Don’t touch me, Caine,” I whimpered, sobbing into my palms. “You almost ruined it all. My efforts. My har
CAINES POV“You shouldn’t have moved the bodies,” Sheriff Sherwood returned to us, pocketing his gun.“We’re sorry, we just couldn’t stand and do nothing,” I replied. He gestured with his head for us to walk with him, and we didn’t stop until we were out of the crime scene, standing amid police vans and ambulances. I knew what he wanted to say just by looking at him. “Look, I’m sorry uncle, I just had to call in this favor. I understand you’ve helped us a lot of times, and my dad probably owes you for the countless favors you have rendered…”“Kid…”“Just…please. This is more like an outbreak than a crime scene. It’s…” I paused, staring at the bodies that were being moved. “It’s dark,” I completed. Uncle Sherwood, my father's younger brother, was the family’s stray child. He started by not meeting his wolf when he was younger, by hanging out in the human world, and always sneaking out of the house. According to my father, he got into more trouble than we could count. Especially with
JASMINES POVI was too wasted to act. I just sat there, letting the chaos around me do its thing. My head fell to the chair, watching as the ceiling traveled in circles. I thought I saw some runes on them, calling into me with its blue glowing light. They looked pretty, and I extended my hands, wishing I could float in the air and know what they felt like. But the music in the room died down, cutting my solemn moment short.“Let’s go, Jasmine,” I heard Caines voice. He sounded muffled, and I couldn’t see his face. “You’re drunk, how much did you have to drink?” He asked, throwing my hand around his shoulder and grabbing me from the waist. I knew what was happening around me, but at the same time, I didn’t. For a second I thought I was levitating, but then whenever I looked at Caine, that hope was gone. I didn’t feel sad or anything, just…empty. For once., nothing bothered me. Caine led me out of the room, and to stop my eyes from hurting, I closed them and rested my head on his sh
JASMINES POVI pressed my hand against my chest, leaning on the side of the wall as my mind spiraled out of control. Thoughts flew in like my mind was a passageway for them, causing my breath to come out ragged. A lot had happened in just what?—three days? And yet there was still someone downstairs calling me a murderer. How was I supposed to face all these while trying to focus on what wolf I would train? Not to speak of my father's deal with Natalia. I heaved a sigh, halted before my mirror, and ran my hands down my hair. The echoes of laughter and muffled sounds of music traveled into my room, it was a room party which I was informed about but declined. But I couldn’t stay in my room, not with all these thoughts running into my head. I needed a distraction, and the room party just seemed like it.With a little touch on my face and hair, I made my way to the room. Room 27. I knocked twice and the door flung open almost immediately, revealing an unfamiliar face. “I know you,” he
CAINE’S POV“Get off her!” I raced past Jojo and Imani, almost knocking them down as I made my way to Jasmine and Isha. I pulled Isha off her and flung her to the feet of her brothers. “Keep your eyes on her!” I yelled at them. For a second, I thought I saw the disappointment in their eyes. They helped Isha up, holding her still despite her aggressive kicks to be set free and yolk her into the living room. “Are you okay?” I extended my hand to help her up. “Yeah,” she coughed, almost falling back on my shoulder. Lucy stepped in between us. “I’ll take her from here,” she said, pulling Jasmine away from me. We all went into the living room but were divided. Jojo and Lucy were with Jasmine, while Harper, Spencer, and Imani were with Isha. I could already sense trouble coming hard at us. “She killed them,” Isha cried, sobbing in the arms of her brothers. “We’ll deal with that later, Isha,” I tried to keep her calm, but that made her angrier. Her blood-red eyes shot angrily at me, sn
JASMINES POVThoughts. More thoughts. Extra thoughts. All night, that was all running through my mind. A brother? I scoffed, turning to the other side of the bed. That was when I realized the sun was out. I’d spent all night pondering on Natalia’s words. I wanted to come down from my bed and feed my thirst, but my body isn't encouraging. I needed rest, even if it was for an hour or two. I shut my eyes, hoping to sleep this time. And just when I thought I was drifting into sleep, a knock came on my door. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up on the bed. The door opened, it was Caine. “Long night?” He asked, walking into my room. I sighed, collapsing on my bed. “How’s Jerry?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. They were beginning to feel heavy with sleep, but with Caine in my room, I knew my day had just begun. “He’s recovering well. Just the…you know…” he said, helping himself to a chair opposite my bed. I sat back up, holding my banging head with both hands. “Cool,” I dragged. “I came t
JASMINES POV “Where do we start from?” I asked Natalia, slowly walking to the glass while I maintained eye contact with her. “Trust,” she blurted, standing up and walking to the edge of the glass. I halted in front of her, a smile crawling up my lips. “Trust is the last thing you could ask for from me,” I replied, holding the gaze until he nodded with her hands going up in the air. “I’d understand. I mean who would want to trust me after going through that betrayal from her mother,” “She did it to keep me safe,” I defended my mom despite how it hurt me to know about all this. But I guess Natalia could see beneath my words of defense like she knew I was broken. “Did she? I mean…look at the damage she has caused you. She’s made you look weak…you’ve become a mockery…so much for someone who falls under…” “Answers,” I interrupted, holding back the tears in my eyes. The lock of the door clicked from outside, and I quickly took a glance at the key hanging in my trousers. Someone el
