CAINES POV

A sharp throbbing pain shot at the back of my head as I stirred awake, the metallic tang of blood filling my mouth. My ears buzzed with the distant echoes of screams and shattering glasses. It took me a while to realize where I was—the men’s restroom, sprawled on the cold floor with my blood smeared around.

I helped myself up, first meeting with my reflection on the mirror above the sink that was cracked. Blood trickled down my forehead, dripping onto the floor with steady beats. My wolf growled low within me, snapping me out of my pain and urging me to find her.

The last thing I remembered was Lucy’s scream. I had no idea how long I’d laid on the floor, but I wasn’t going to let them leave the club with her. Dragging myself out of the restroom, I staggered down the stairs, holding my head in pain.

I could still feel a piece of glass hiding beneath my head. I wiped the blood from my face with the back of my hand, forcing my vision to focus on the stairs which looked like they were wobbling.

“Lucy,” I called, taking a break on a step. My eyes darted around me, trying to get a glimpse of her. But everything was covered in red. I continued, dragging myself further down the stairs.

“Lucy,” I breathed. The door in front of me flung open, people racing through it. I was almost pushed to the floor, but my grip around the rail was strong to keep me on my feet. I forced myself through the crowd, stepping over broken bottles and bodies.

The DJ booth was damaged, the music playing in a distorted manner. The Dj himself was dead. I recognized him—a student of ours. My wolf growled, clawing at me to unleash the anger in me. But I reeled him in. “Not now, boy,” I muttered.

As seconds passed, I finally got a clearer vision. “Jojo!” I yelled his name the moment I sighted him. He hurried to where I was and assisted me.

“You were cut,” jojo said, placing his hand on a deep cut I didn’t notice on my torso. I winced, shifting away from his hand,

“I’m fine. Where’s Lucy?” I asked.

“Lucy? Thought she was with you?” He returned.

My heart went into overdrive, racing like I just returned from a sprint. If Lucy wasn’t with the rest of the group, it means they have her.

“They took her. We have to find her. Imani! Spencer! Harper!” I yelled their names. Spencer was hurt. His old Injury hadn’t healed and something must have torn it open again.

“Who’s they?” Jojo asked, racing to assist Spencer. I lifted my face, finally listening to the low growls of my wolf. That was when I understood why he’d been restless.

“They,” I said, my gaze fixed on the men standing by the door. Their eyes followed my direction, and soon, we were all staring at the men/ hooded figures standing by the door.

“I don’t see Lucy. Where’s Lucy?!” I yelled, making an attempt to go after them. But Jojo pulled me back.

“We can’t. Don’t even think about it. We don’t know who these people are,”

“That’s the reason why we should…” my breath hitched in my throat the moment I saw one of them pull out a gun. “They have guns,” I said calmly, yet filled with tension.

One thing I learnt from my father, no one points a gun without silver billets at a werewolf. The aim was always to kill. His advice—when there’s a gun involved, run!

“Run!” I told the group.

We burst into a sprint, Imani and Jojo leading while Harper and I assisted Spencer.

“Faster!” Imani yelled.

Shots were fired, glasses shattering in front of us as we got closer to our vehicle.

“Keys!” Jojo yelled. I tossed the keys to him, ignoring the fact that he’s a horrible driver. He was better than Imani when you look at it from the brighter side.

Getting into the car was a whole different task. The engine failed to kick start. Spencer kept screaming at every method we tried to put him in. Imani sat in the car, yelling at how slow we were.

“It’s refusing…to…start,” Jojo grunted, applying more pressure. Harper, Spencer and I successfully got into the car, and now, we were waiting for Jojo. We buried our heads, holding our hopes high chaotically until the engine kicked.

“Drive!” I yelled.

****

The journey home was quiet, everyone still healing from the shock. Jojo packed at the garage, stepping out before everyone of us. We helped Spencer out while Imani went ahead of us to open the doors.

“Something’s off,” Harper said. I sensed it too. The silence, it was weird. I checked my phone for the time and it was just past midnight. The students occupying the top floor were usually up and about by this time. They hardly slept early.

After placing Spencer on the table, I headed for the top floor—Jasmine's room. It was locked from inside. I wanted to leave, but my wolf grew restless with every step I took away.

I returned to the door, placed my ear on its metallic frame and listened for a heartbeat. There was none. My wolf growled, its anger crawling up my skin. My mate was gone.

With a strength gathered from my wolf, I crashed my shoulder against the door, breaking its lock and forcing it open. The room was empty.

My chest tightened, my breath coming out with so much difficulty that I feared I was going to pass out. Jasmine was gone. They had taken her.

My legs found its way out of the room, staggering as I made my way down the stairs.

“Guys, Jasmine was taken too,” I announced terrified.

They were standing in a curved circle, and my arrival made them break the perfect arc, revealing Jojo who was fighting for his breath on the floor, hands covered in blood.

“A bullet got to Jojo”.

His breaths were shallow, his face pale and the blood gushing out from his torso wasn’t slowing down. Imani hovered around us, her hands wringing in the air. “What do we do? He’s losing so much blood! I don’t want to lose him,” she cried, sounding like she was about to have a panic attack. “Harper, get towels, Imani, boil some water!” I barked, my alpha instincts kicking in. For once, they didn’t question me or argue. They rushed off, doing as I instructed. Jojo groaned, his head tilting to the side. “It’s okay…I’ve seen worse. Just let me…” “Shut up!” I pressed harder on the wound, causing him to scream in pain. He ended with a chuckle, grabbing my hand as he shone his blood-stained teeth in a smile. “It’s too late,” he whizzed, coughing more blood on me. “No, it’s not,” I whispered. Not like I knew what I was doing, these were things I

The sharp scent of burning wood mingled with the aroma of the trees. Shadows danced across my vision, and for a moment, I thought I was alone. But I wasn’t. “Rise and shine, beauty,” a masculine mocking voice called out, followed by a chorused laughter. I winced in pain, holding my head as I sat on the ground. “Who are you?” I asked the most relevant question. It was obvious we were in the woods. But doing what? Caine has mentioned how unsafe the pack was. So why would I be in the woods with strangers who stole me from bed?One of the boys walked up to me and offered to help me stand. I hesitated, but took his hand in the end, “You abducted me from my bed…” I queried, glaring at them one after the other. But they were unfazed. The once distant laughter and chants were now audible. My heart hammered as I watched the two wolves clash, their sharp teeth snapping and claws tearing into each other. For a second, they vanished from my sight. Moments later, I heard the don’t rustle of leaves ahead of me. Caine emerged from the down part of the hill. His clothes were torn, body was covered in black smoke and sand. “Let’s go,” he said to me. I was numb until we arrived at the car. The glimpse of his chest which I caught before he walked past me registered in my head, refusing to accommodate any other thought. The journey back to the pack house was a silent one. I kept reeling through the thoughts of what happened back in the woods when Caine broke the silence. “Did anyone harm you?” He asked, stealing a glance at me. “No, I’m fine,” I answered. I had questions for him too. Like how he knew I was in the woods and that I

My eyes fluttered, fighting to open. But it was too weak to take the light coming at it. “You slept for too long, little one,” a second voice, which I didn’t know was close to me, said. His phone noisily dialed a number and it rang twice before a familiar female voice answered it. “What?” “Your daughter is awake,” the man said. He passed out in the front yard after undergoing a terrible shock. “Dad!” I yelled, trying to get his attention. But they were so focused on Adrain that I felt invincible. After successfully placing him in bed, they decided to give me an answer. “You have nothing to worry about. Adrian is fine,” “A wolf doesn’t move as fast as that,” I objected, refusing to let go of their trail. I followed them back to the dining room where they went to their meal which they abandoned to help Adrian. I checked the time, it was almost nine. “If you won’t give me answers then let me leave. The swearing-in begins at ten,” I protested. They paid deaf ears to me, quietly eating their food. The doors were locked, and the huge guys who captured me at the party were positioned at the front exits of the house. No doubt the back was guarded too. “Go to your room

I made my way to my father's room and went in after no one responded to my knock. It looked empty. And I began my search for it. “Caine?” My father's voice startled me from the door which I forgot to lock. “What are you doing in my room?” He turned on the lights and began walking towards me. “The…the programme for tonight. Draped in a black sleek gown, its fabric clinging to my figure and cascading down my knees until they touched my ankles. Its simplicity was unique, its sleeveless design leaving my shoulders and collarbone exposed and glowing under the sheen of carefully applied oil. “You look…exquisite,” the lady who was getting me dressed for the occasion said, forcing a smile to play around my lips. “Thank you,” I said, waiting for her to leave my side before I moved out of the chair to take in the full beauty. I climbed the stage, the spotlight on me as Alpha Morgan gave the second microphone to me. He asked me questions that I had seen In the leaflet which Caine gave me. We were six questions down, the crowd cheering with every correct answer I had until the last. “Every pack needs a new leader the old one is gone. Who amongst my sons do you think has that in him?” I truer to understand the nature of the question as the silence in the hall grew. It sounded tricky, but we all knew the answer. “Caine,” “And why?” He threw a second question, staring at me closely. “He…urm. JASMINE’S POV “Can I have a word with you?” I asked, stealing glances at Bryan who was looking out of the window. Caine was still answering a call at the garage while I pulled Lucy to a corner. “That’s him,” I blurted. “Him? What do you mean by him?” “My ex, Lucy, Bryan. That’s him,” I clarified. My heart raced, my blood boiling as I mistakenly looked into his eyes. He looked away immediately, and I knew that guilt was eating him up. “Your…ex? That Bryan?” “Yes, Lucy, that's Bryan,” I answered. “Okay, chill. He’s been my work partner for a while now. I never knew he was the Bryan you were talking about,” Lucy snapped. She noticed that wasn’t going to get me calm, so instead, she took my hands and pulled me closer to her. “Hey, nothing is going on between us, he’s just a colleague. I am with Caine, remember?” She asked. I didn’t want to give her a response, but the way she looked into my eyes demanded one. I nodded consecutively. “Yeah, yeah,” I breathed. “An

We stood for almost ten minutes, waiting for Adrian to finish up with his meal. When he was finally done, he crept out from the darkness, the red eyes still glowing as he made himself visible. I felt tears brewing in my eyes as I stood up and tossed a jacket to him. “Put these on”. “How long has he been this way,” Bryan asked, helping me with the empty blood bags. “A month, two or three weeks. I can’t really tell. All I know is that there was something wrong with him the last time I went home,” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” Adrian interrupted, walking out of the darkness completely. He exhaled, slowly opening his eyes. The red was gone, likewise the rage. “Dad did something new, and for the first time it worked,” “For the first time?” I asked, trying to process what he meant. “Have there been other trials, Adrian?” “Yeah…they all

LUCY'S POVMy heart skipped a beat as the bag fell from my shoulder, the blood bags which I had stolen from the pack clinic sprawling on the floor. “Oh my God! I tossed them into the bag, not paying attention to whatever he was saying.“Lucy, I asked a question!” He pulled my shoulder, sending me to the floor. I fell on my butt, wincing in pain. “Oh my…Luce, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to,”“Stay away from me,” I yelled, stopping him with an extended palm. I took my time on the floor, thinking of what lie to give to him so he wouldn’t go asking questions. “Lucy…I didn’t mean to hit you in that manner,” he apologized, taking further steps closer to me. I burst into tears, burying my head in my legs. That was the first excuse I could garner from my thoughts, just so I’d have enough time to think. “Don’t touch me, Caine,” I whimpered, sobbing into my palms. “You almost ruined it all. My efforts. CAINES POV“You shouldn’t have moved the bodies,” Sheriff Sherwood returned to us, pocketing his gun.“We’re sorry, we just couldn’t stand and do nothing,” I replied. He gestured with his head for us to walk with him, and we didn’t stop until we were out of the crime scene, standing amid police vans and ambulances. I knew what he wanted to say just by looking at him. “Look, I’m sorry uncle, I just had to call in this favor. I understand you’ve helped us a lot of times, and my dad probably owes you for the countless favors you have rendered…”“Kid…”“Just…please. This is more like an outbreak than a crime scene. JASMINES POVI was too wasted to act. I just sat there, letting the chaos around me do its thing. My head fell to the chair, watching as the ceiling traveled in circles. I thought I saw some runes on them, calling into me with its blue glowing light. They looked pretty, and I extended my hands, wishing I could float in the air and know what they felt like. But the music in the room died down, cutting my solemn moment short.“Let’s go, Jasmine,” I heard Caines voice. He sounded muffled, and I couldn’t see his face. “You’re drunk, how much did you have to drink?” He asked, throwing my hand around his shoulder and grabbing me from the waist. I knew what was happening around me, but at the same time, I didn’t. For a second I thought I was levitating, but then whenever I looked at Caine, that hope was gone. JASMINES POVI pressed my hand against my chest, leaning on the side of the wall as my mind spiraled out of control. Thoughts flew in like my mind was a passageway for them, causing my breath to come out ragged. A lot had happened in just what?—three days? And yet there was still someone downstairs calling me a murderer. How was I supposed to face all these while trying to focus on what wolf I would train? Not to speak of my father's deal with Natalia. I heaved a sigh, halted before my mirror, and ran my hands down my hair. The echoes of laughter and muffled sounds of music traveled into my room, it was a room party which I was informed about but declined. But I couldn’t stay in my room, not with all these thoughts running into my head. I needed a distraction, and the room party just seemed like it.With a little touch on my face and hair, I made my way to the room. Room 27. I knocked twice and the door flung open almost immediately, revealing an unfamiliar face. “I know you,” he

I pulled Isha off her and flung her to the feet of her brothers. “Keep your eyes on her!” I yelled at them. For a second, I thought I saw the disappointment in their eyes. They helped Isha up, holding her still despite her aggressive kicks to be set free and yolk her into the living room. “Are you okay?” I extended my hand to help her up. “Yeah,” she coughed, almost falling back on my shoulder. Lucy stepped in between us. “I’ll take her from here,” she said, pulling Jasmine away from me. We all went into the living room but were divided. Jojo and Lucy were with Jasmine, while Harper, Spencer, and Imani were with Isha. I could already sense trouble coming hard at us. “She killed them,” Isha cried, sobbing in the arms of her brothers. “We’ll deal with that later, Isha,” I tried to keep her calm, but that made her angrier. JASMINES POVThoughts. More thoughts. Extra thoughts. All night, that was all running through my mind. A brother? I scoffed, turning to the other side of the bed. That was when I realized the sun was out. I’d spent all night pondering on Natalia’s words. I wanted to come down from my bed and feed my thirst, but my body isn't encouraging. I needed rest, even if it was for an hour or two. I shut my eyes, hoping to sleep this time. And just when I thought I was drifting into sleep, a knock came on my door. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up on the bed. The door opened, it was Caine. “Long night?” He asked, walking into my room. I sighed, collapsing on my bed. “How’s Jerry?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. They were beginning to feel heavy with sleep, but with Caine in my room, I knew my day had just begun. “He’s recovering well. Just the…you know…” he said, helping himself to a chair opposite my bed. I mean who would want to trust me after going through that betrayal from her mother,” “She did it to keep me safe,” I defended my mom despite how it hurt me to know about all this. But I guess Natalia could see beneath my words of defense like she knew I was broken. “Did she? I mean…look at the damage she has caused you. She’s made you look weak…you’ve become a mockery…so much for someone who falls under…” “Answers,” I interrupted, holding back the tears in my eyes.
