JASMINES POV

The crackling of flames and the distant hum of laughter pulled me out of my haze of unconsciousness. My eyes fluttered open, and I found myself sprawled on the cold forest floor. The sharp scent of burning wood mingled with the aroma of the trees.

Shadows danced across my vision, and for a moment, I thought I was alone. But I wasn’t.

“Rise and shine, beauty,” a masculine mocking voice called out, followed by a chorused laughter. I winced in pain, holding my head as I sat on the ground.

“Who are you?” I asked the most relevant question. It was obvious we were in the woods. But doing what? Caine has mentioned how unsafe the pack was. So why would I be in the woods with strangers who stole me from bed?

One of the boys walked up to me and offered to help me stand. I hesitated, but took his hand in the end, “You abducted me from my bed…” I queried, glaring at them one after the other.

But they were unfazed. The once distant laughter and chants were now audible. I recognized most of them dancing around the fire. The were students of the pack's academy.

“You all are students?” I asked, turning to the boy who helped me stand.

“Relax,” he said, his tone dripping with false friendliness. “We’re just having some fun,” he said, collecting a red cup from a friend standing near him and offering it to me.

“The woods aren’t safe. Or haven’t you heard and seen?” I asked. I glanced around, my pulse quickening. The scene felt off, out of my kind of circle. Not like I had a circle, but…it just wasn’t my thing.

“Oh, come on. Don’t be such a buzzkill. It’s just a bonfire,” a blondie chirped in, taking the drink from the boy and stepping closer. “Have a drink, loosen up. Tonight’s our last night together by the way. Tomorrow, we’ll all be assigned different roles and positions,” she said.

I force a smile, memories of my high school crossing through my mind. She was like Imani. Pretty, confident but dumb. Maybe I didn’t know how to handle her type back in high school, but now, the reverse was the case.

“What’s your name, pretty?” I asked, inching closer. I bet she was shocked by the way I inched closer. I saw it wave past her face in a second.

“Betty,”

“Betty,” I repeated, taking a few strands of her hair in my hand. She moved away, taking them off my hand. “You’re too pretty to be here at this hour, Betty. The woods aren’t safe, the pack either. So if I were you, I’d pack my things and get going,” I said to her.

She was silent, her eyes flicking from me to the boy who had helped me stand. Then I understood what the issue was.

“He’s your boyfriend?” I asked.

“Don’t answer that,” the boy cut in, but he was too late. Betty nodded twice affirmatively. I smiled with a heavy sigh.

“He wants you to stay. I bet you he’d be the first to run when something comes crawling out of those tall bushes. Or even the fire,” I told her.

“That’s enough!” the boy said. He pulled her to a side, whispered something into her ear and I watched her walk away. “I’m Eric. Who are you?”

“Jasmine. Nice meeting you Eric,” I stretched for a handshake.

“Now listen Jasmine,” Eric said, taking my hand and squeezing it in his. His breath fanned against my ear as he held me tightly to his body. “What makes you think you can tell my girl what to do, huh?” He sounded angry.

He had a lot to drink. His mouth reeked of alcohol and weed. His tongue disgustingly slurped my ear, biting its tip and causing me to moan a little.

“Before that…” he pulled away, pressing the red cup against my stomach. “Drink,” he ordered.

Eric looked like a teenager. A perfect replica of the young Caine. Always believed they could get whatever they wanted because of their charming looks and that they had every girl lying at their command.

“I’m not interested,” I pushed the cup away. I turned to leave but the rest of his male friends stood in my way. My wolf growled low in my head, wanting to take them out.

But she and I knew that was impossible. I’d barely met her. The best she could do was growl in my head and have a discussion with me—all in my head, I had never morphed nor had my claws and canines grown before.

“Drink, Jasmine,” Eric said again. I turned to him, forcing a smile.

“Like I said, I am not interested,” I repeated. He forced the drink on me, doing his best to flush it down my throat. In a swift motion, I kneed his dick, leaving him screaming as I raced into the woods.

“Get her!” He cried, ordering his minions,

Then adrenaline surged through me as I seinyee through the dense woods. The sound of pounding feet and angry shouts echoed behind me. My heart raced in sync with my footsteps which went as fast as they could.

“Don’t let her get away!” Eric’s voice echoed. They were hot on my trail.

The forest was dark. The only faint light was the faint glow of the crescent moon. My legs burned, but I didn’t dare stop. The fear coursing through me drowned every other feeling, driving me further with one purpose—escape.

Momentarily, my legs failed me but I wouldn't dare to stop, Eric had that unforgiving look. Their voices drew closer, the pounding of their feet louder until I heard the snapping of their bones.

I turned around, freezing in my tracks when I saw them morphing.

Eric’s wolf was bigger. It has a grey fur glinting in the dark as the faint rays of the moon danced across it. He growled, sending cold chills down my spine.

Now I was facing the wrath of the wolves snarling at me.

Eric burst into a sprint, snapping his teeth as his claws dug into the soil, racing toward me. My heart took a huge leap out of my chest the moment he lunged himself at me. He was in mid-air when a different wolf crashed into him, sending them rolling on the sand.

They both took their stance instantly, snapping their teeth at each other and snarling,

The black wolf growled, sending a surge of familiarity coursing through my veins. It looked back at me, its yellow eyes piercing through the darkness.

“Caine?” I muttered.

JASMINES POVSnarls and growls echoed through the dark woods, a primal battle unfolding before my eyes. Eric’s wolf was nothing compared to Caine’s. My heart hammered as I watched the two wolves clash, their sharp teeth snapping and claws tearing into each other. For a second, they vanished from my sight. Moments later, I heard the don’t rustle of leaves ahead of me. Caine emerged from the down part of the hill. His clothes were torn, body was covered in black smoke and sand. “Let’s go,” he said to me. I was numb until we arrived at the car. The glimpse of his chest which I caught before he walked past me registered in my head, refusing to accommodate any other thought. The journey back to the pack house was a silent one. I kept reeling through the thoughts of what happened back in the woods when Caine broke the silence. “Did anyone harm you?” He asked, stealing a glance at me. “No, I’m fine,” I answered. I had questions for him too. Like how he knew I was in the woods and that I

LUCY'S POV The blindfold that was wrapped around my eye was slowly taken off, permitting the hot rays of light to hit my face. I groaned, adjusting as much as I could to get a better posture on the chair. “She’s awake. Call her,” the distant voice of a man said, his footsteps withdrawing further away from the room. My eyes fluttered, fighting to open. But it was too weak to take the light coming at it. “You slept for too long, little one,” a second voice, which I didn’t know was close to me, said. His phone noisily dialed a number and it rang twice before a familiar female voice answered it. “What?” “Your daughter is awake,” the man said. My mother? ***** The screeching of tires sent the man beside me hurrying toward the door, and I didn’t need to see her before I knew she was the one. The door burst open, my mother strutting in line the older bitchy me she was. She halted mid-way and took off her shades, disgust etched on her face. “Who amongst you tied my daughter to a c

LUCY’S POV “What did you do to him?” I followed my father behind, throwing questions at him as he and my mother helped Adrian to his bed. He passed out in the front yard after undergoing a terrible shock. “Dad!” I yelled, trying to get his attention. But they were so focused on Adrain that I felt invincible. After successfully placing him in bed, they decided to give me an answer. “You have nothing to worry about. Adrian is fine,” “A wolf doesn’t move as fast as that,” I objected, refusing to let go of their trail. I followed them back to the dining room where they went to their meal which they abandoned to help Adrian. I checked the time, it was almost nine. “If you won’t give me answers then let me leave. The swearing-in begins at ten,” I protested. They paid deaf ears to me, quietly eating their food. The doors were locked, and the huge guys who captured me at the party were positioned at the front exits of the house. No doubt the back was guarded too. “Go to your room

CAINES POV “That’s too tight,” I told the guy who was getting me dressed. It wasn’t something I enjoyed but had to permit it because my father said it was protocol. He took off the first vest and replaced it with a better one. “Thank you,” I said, adjusting it. He left the room, leaving me all by myself staring at my reflection in the mirror. My father's words rang in my head, reminding me of how much he expected from me tonight. But before that, I needed to do something. I made my way to my father's room and went in after no one responded to my knock. It looked empty. And I began my search for it. “Caine?” My father's voice startled me from the door which I forgot to lock. “What are you doing in my room?” He turned on the lights and began walking towards me. “The…the programme for tonight. I was searching for the program for tonight,” I lied, studying his eyes to see if he bought it. He stared at me with doubt for a few seconds before proceeding towards his bed. “I t

JASMINES POV The room was quiet for a while, except for the spicy rustle of fabrics and the distant noise of the occasion coming from the Alphas’ house. I stood motionless, staring at the woman in the mirror whom I could barely recognize. Draped in a black sleek gown, its fabric clinging to my figure and cascading down my knees until they touched my ankles. Its simplicity was unique, its sleeveless design leaving my shoulders and collarbone exposed and glowing under the sheen of carefully applied oil. “You look…exquisite,” the lady who was getting me dressed for the occasion said, forcing a smile to play around my lips. “Thank you,” I said, waiting for her to leave my side before I moved out of the chair to take in the full beauty. How could I look this way and let them bully me all my years in high school? My red hair stood out, perfectly oiled and aligned to fall my shoulders in a curl. “Has he arrived?” I asked the lady. But she shook her head in negation. “I’ll go co

JASMINES POV I sat in that crowd for almost two hours pondering on Caine’s words. It sounded like an invitation to treat, one which could lead me into trouble. But it was a nice offer, yet one I could not accept because he was dating my best friend. After hours of sitting and watching, my babe was finally called. I climbed the stage, the spotlight on me as Alpha Morgan gave the second microphone to me. He asked me questions that I had seen In the leaflet which Caine gave me. We were six questions down, the crowd cheering with every correct answer I had until the last. “Every pack needs a new leader the old one is gone. Who amongst my sons do you think has that in him?” I truer to understand the nature of the question as the silence in the hall grew. It sounded tricky, but we all knew the answer. “Caine,” “And why?” He threw a second question, staring at me closely. “He…urm. He’s strong, carries everyone along, protective, and…” “And not because you love him?” Alpha Morga

JASMINES POV We were racing towards the room where the rest were. Luckily, Lucy’s aunt was there before us. She’d already done what she could to revive Lucy and now she was breathing properly. “Mrs Elena,” I called, letting her pull me into a hug. “How’s she?” I asked. “You worry so much, kid. Lucy will be fine. I’ve written a list of drugs you should get her by morning. She has refused to come home for months. So when she wakes, do send my regards,” Mrs Elena said before leaving. What did she mean Lucy had refused to come home for months? The last time we made inquiries about her she said she was helping her aunt out. I waved it aside, joining my best friend on the bed. Her skin was pale, the blood on her torso staining the bandage which was carefully wrapped around it. “We should get some rest,” Caine broke the silence. “Not to worry, I’m good here,” I said without looking. They left me alone with her, and I slid myself under her duvet, wrapping my arms around her as I dr

JASMINES POV “Kiss him! Kiss him! Kiss him!” Up went the roar of the crowd. But I’d rather kiss a pig than Bryan. That lying ass cheat of a boy. “Jasmine…how are you?” Bryan asked, his gaze still fixed on mine. “I should be asking you the same question,” I returned, stealing a glance at the crowd who were now booing us. I didn’t like to be booed. Hell, I was too pretty for that now. “I came here to…” Bryan paused, shaking his head with a soft chuckle. “How funny. Is this fate's way of joining our paths again? Cos if it is then I sure ain’t ready for that,” “It’s a curse, rather. And neither am I ready to walk around with a curse again,” I fired. By now, the booing from the crowd had grown insane. Some of them were even throwing stuff at us. “Just kiss me and get this over this,” I said, attempting to blindfold myself again. But he stopped me with laughter which sounded like he was mocking me. “What ?” “You think I would do that?” “And you think they would let us get d

JASMINE’S POV “Can I have a word with you?” I asked, stealing glances at Bryan who was looking out of the window. Caine was still answering a call at the garage while I pulled Lucy to a corner. “That’s him,” I blurted. “Him? What do you mean by him?” “My ex, Lucy, Bryan. That’s him,” I clarified. My heart raced, my blood boiling as I mistakenly looked into his eyes. He looked away immediately, and I knew that guilt was eating him up. “Your…ex? That Bryan?” “Yes, Lucy, that's Bryan,” I answered. “Okay, chill. He’s been my work partner for a while now. I never knew he was the Bryan you were talking about,” Lucy snapped. She noticed that wasn’t going to get me calm, so instead, she took my hands and pulled me closer to her. “Hey, nothing is going on between us, he’s just a colleague. I am with Caine, remember?” She asked. I didn’t want to give her a response, but the way she looked into my eyes demanded one. I nodded consecutively. “Yeah, yeah,” I breathed. “An

LUCY’S POV “Whatever this is, Luce, it’s not normal,” Bryan said, inching closer to me. I sighed, falling back on the wooden chair behind me. We stood for almost ten minutes, waiting for Adrian to finish up with his meal. When he was finally done, he crept out from the darkness, the red eyes still glowing as he made himself visible. I felt tears brewing in my eyes as I stood up and tossed a jacket to him. “Put these on”. “How long has he been this way,” Bryan asked, helping me with the empty blood bags. “A month, two or three weeks. I can’t really tell. All I know is that there was something wrong with him the last time I went home,” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” Adrian interrupted, walking out of the darkness completely. He exhaled, slowly opening his eyes. The red was gone, likewise the rage. “Dad did something new, and for the first time it worked,” “For the first time?” I asked, trying to process what he meant. “Have there been other trials, Adrian?” “Yeah…they all

LUCY'S POVMy heart skipped a beat as the bag fell from my shoulder, the blood bags which I had stolen from the pack clinic sprawling on the floor. “Oh my God! Caine!” I exclaimed, trying to hide the guilt as I started linking them up with a rush. I tossed them into the bag, not paying attention to whatever he was saying.“Lucy, I asked a question!” He pulled my shoulder, sending me to the floor. I fell on my butt, wincing in pain. “Oh my…Luce, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to,”“Stay away from me,” I yelled, stopping him with an extended palm. I took my time on the floor, thinking of what lie to give to him so he wouldn’t go asking questions. “Lucy…I didn’t mean to hit you in that manner,” he apologized, taking further steps closer to me. I burst into tears, burying my head in my legs. That was the first excuse I could garner from my thoughts, just so I’d have enough time to think. “Don’t touch me, Caine,” I whimpered, sobbing into my palms. “You almost ruined it all. My efforts. CAINES POV“You shouldn’t have moved the bodies,” Sheriff Sherwood returned to us, pocketing his gun.“We’re sorry, we just couldn’t stand and do nothing,” I replied. He gestured with his head for us to walk with him, and we didn’t stop until we were out of the crime scene, standing amid police vans and ambulances. I knew what he wanted to say just by looking at him. “Look, I’m sorry uncle, I just had to call in this favor. I understand you’ve helped us a lot of times, and my dad probably owes you for the countless favors you have rendered…”“Kid…”“Just…please. This is more like an outbreak than a crime scene. It’s…” I paused, staring at the bodies that were being moved. “It’s dark,” I completed. Uncle Sherwood, my father's younger brother, was the family’s stray child. He started by not meeting his wolf when he was younger, by hanging out in the human world, and always sneaking out of the house. According to my father, he got into more trouble than we could count. Especially with

JASMINES POVI was too wasted to act. I just sat there, letting the chaos around me do its thing. My head fell to the chair, watching as the ceiling traveled in circles. I thought I saw some runes on them, calling into me with its blue glowing light. They looked pretty, and I extended my hands, wishing I could float in the air and know what they felt like. But the music in the room died down, cutting my solemn moment short.“Let’s go, Jasmine,” I heard Caines voice. He sounded muffled, and I couldn’t see his face. “You’re drunk, how much did you have to drink?” He asked, throwing my hand around his shoulder and grabbing me from the waist. I knew what was happening around me, but at the same time, I didn’t. For a second I thought I was levitating, but then whenever I looked at Caine, that hope was gone. I didn’t feel sad or anything, just…empty. For once., nothing bothered me. Caine led me out of the room, and to stop my eyes from hurting, I closed them and rested my head on his sh

JASMINES POVI pressed my hand against my chest, leaning on the side of the wall as my mind spiraled out of control. Thoughts flew in like my mind was a passageway for them, causing my breath to come out ragged. A lot had happened in just what?—three days? And yet there was still someone downstairs calling me a murderer. How was I supposed to face all these while trying to focus on what wolf I would train? Not to speak of my father's deal with Natalia. I heaved a sigh, halted before my mirror, and ran my hands down my hair. The echoes of laughter and muffled sounds of music traveled into my room, it was a room party which I was informed about but declined. But I couldn’t stay in my room, not with all these thoughts running into my head. I needed a distraction, and the room party just seemed like it.With a little touch on my face and hair, I made my way to the room. Room 27. I knocked twice and the door flung open almost immediately, revealing an unfamiliar face. “I know you,” he

CAINE’S POV“Get off her!” I raced past Jojo and Imani, almost knocking them down as I made my way to Jasmine and Isha. I pulled Isha off her and flung her to the feet of her brothers. “Keep your eyes on her!” I yelled at them. For a second, I thought I saw the disappointment in their eyes. They helped Isha up, holding her still despite her aggressive kicks to be set free and yolk her into the living room. “Are you okay?” I extended my hand to help her up. “Yeah,” she coughed, almost falling back on my shoulder. Lucy stepped in between us. “I’ll take her from here,” she said, pulling Jasmine away from me. We all went into the living room but were divided. Jojo and Lucy were with Jasmine, while Harper, Spencer, and Imani were with Isha. I could already sense trouble coming hard at us. “She killed them,” Isha cried, sobbing in the arms of her brothers. “We’ll deal with that later, Isha,” I tried to keep her calm, but that made her angrier. Her blood-red eyes shot angrily at me, sn

JASMINES POVThoughts. More thoughts. Extra thoughts. All night, that was all running through my mind. A brother? I scoffed, turning to the other side of the bed. That was when I realized the sun was out. I’d spent all night pondering on Natalia’s words. I wanted to come down from my bed and feed my thirst, but my body isn't encouraging. I needed rest, even if it was for an hour or two. I shut my eyes, hoping to sleep this time. And just when I thought I was drifting into sleep, a knock came on my door. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up on the bed. The door opened, it was Caine. “Long night?” He asked, walking into my room. I sighed, collapsing on my bed. “How’s Jerry?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. They were beginning to feel heavy with sleep, but with Caine in my room, I knew my day had just begun. “He’s recovering well. Just the…you know…” he said, helping himself to a chair opposite my bed. I sat back up, holding my banging head with both hands. “Cool,” I dragged. “I came t

JASMINES POV “Where do we start from?” I asked Natalia, slowly walking to the glass while I maintained eye contact with her. “Trust,” she blurted, standing up and walking to the edge of the glass. I halted in front of her, a smile crawling up my lips. “Trust is the last thing you could ask for from me,” I replied, holding the gaze until he nodded with her hands going up in the air. “I’d understand. I mean who would want to trust me after going through that betrayal from her mother,” “She did it to keep me safe,” I defended my mom despite how it hurt me to know about all this. But I guess Natalia could see beneath my words of defense like she knew I was broken. “Did she? I mean…look at the damage she has caused you. She’s made you look weak…you’ve become a mockery…so much for someone who falls under…” “Answers,” I interrupted, holding back the tears in my eyes.
