CAINES POV
The metallic scents of Jojo’s blood filled the air as I placed him on the table, applying pressure on the wound by his side. His breaths were shallow, his face pale and the blood gushing out from his torso wasn’t slowing down. Imani hovered around us, her hands wringing in the air. “What do we do? He’s losing so much blood! I don’t want to lose him,” she cried, sounding like she was about to have a panic attack. “Harper, get towels, Imani, boil some water!” I barked, my alpha instincts kicking in. For once, they didn’t question me or argue. They rushed off, doing as I instructed. Jojo groaned, his head tilting to the side. “It’s okay…I’ve seen worse. Just let me…” “Shut up!” I pressed harder on the wound, causing him to scream in pain. He ended with a chuckle, grabbing my hand as he shone his blood-stained teeth in a smile. “It’s too late,” he whizzed, coughing more blood on me. “No, it’s not,” I whispered. Not like I knew what I was doing, these were things I’ve seen the pack healers and doctors do whenever someone was badly hurt. A bullet or a cut to a vital part of his body. I remember feigning from those practicals which had to do with blood and flesh. Now here I was, fighting to save my friend's life. I checked my phone to see if I’d gotten any text from my dad whom I texted a few minutes ago. There was no new mail or message. “Siri…call dad,” “Are you sure about this? Aren’t we supposed to like…be taking the billet out of him?” Imani cried, biting down on her fingers. “We can’t touch anything in him, Imani. We might just screw him up. None of us knows how to handle a scissors or a surgical blade,” “But we’ve got claws,” Harper objected. He made sense, yet that a also a risk. “My father will be here soon,” I said, hoping that would ease the tension in the room. After a few minutes, my father’s car pulled up at the garage. He raced into the room, rolling his sleeves up without wanting to know who and who was present. That's unlike him, though. “Did you get all I asked for?” He asked, picking up the surgical blades. “Yes, we did,” I answered. He was calm, handling Jojo's body like there wasn't a pool of blood before him. Imani, Harper, Spencer, and I stood watching from a distance. My father’s back was on us, and all we could see was the way his hands moved swiftly, yet calmly. My heart skipped a beat when Jojo took a deep breath, one that didn’t send out any air later on. Was he dead? Was my friend dead? I swallowed, trying to hide the fear that was glaring on the faces of the rest, What would they do if they found out I too was just as scared as they were? It is not more. “Dad…he’s stopped breathing,” I said softly, walking closer to my father. He washed the blood off his hands and turned to me. “The boy needs rest. He’ll wake up in a few hours. And I don’t expect any of you to cut his resting period short else that would affect him and you’d be responsible for …his death,” my father answered, his gaze flicking from one person to another, “Thanks, Dad,” I said, contemplating if I should hug him or not. My father wasn’t that kind of person, and he just had to prove me right. “Don’t thank me yet, Caine. We’ve got to talk,” he said, walking to his car ahead of me. ***** “What were you thinking? The initiation is tomorrow night. And now this?” My dad tried to keep his voice down. I noticed his anger with the way his hands were wrapped around the steering, squeezing its frame. “I’m sorry Dad,” “Club 9! Of all places! I warned, Caine. I warned! That club was built jointly by me and some other supernatural beings. We never considered the dangers that would arise, that’s why I warned Rib to stay away from it,” “I did!” I interrupted him, ready to speak and stand for myself. “I stayed away from it for as long as you asked. I only went there yesterday with my friends…” “Your friends. It’s always your friends!” He cut me short, I sighed, leaning back into the chair and looking away, I couldn't stand his gaze. He didn't only warn me about Club 9 but also about my friends. He didn’t like them and believed they were the reason I was labeled the school’s playboy back then. Lucy was the only one he found interesting. Something he mentioned about her lifestyle made him prefer her over the rest. What I never mentioned was that it was my father's friendship with Lucy that made me take a new turn. Not entirely though. He wanted me to be the next alpha, so he used her to get to me. From pretending to change, I found myself taking a new turn. And now I was here, playing the role of daddy to my friends. “There are new students, Caine. New students. They need coaches. They need an alpha leader who would teach them to be the best of themselves and harness the powers of their wolves, Not someone who goes partying hard all night,” “It was just this once Dad,” I blurted nonchalantly because it was obvious he wasn’t paying any attention to me at all. He was just here to scold me like he always does like I’m no adult of my own. “And this one has got me reconsidering the alpha position. Your step brother might just be a percent alpha,” “You can’t. Dave is only seventeen,” I objected. “I was only eighteen when I took on the position. This might just be history wanting to repeat itself,” he returned. Silence fell between us, leaving me pondering on his words. “Your friend will be fine by morning. Use the night to get yourself ready for tomorrow. I want no disappointments, understood?” He asked. Tomorrow?, ooh! The initiation. That isn't really my problem… The two most important girls in my life were missing, and I had to find them tonight. “Caine?” “Understood,” I replied. As he opened the car, I stood by the side, and watched him drive off. The moment his car was out of sight, Imani and Harper raced down to me. “What did he say? “Jasmine and Lucy are missing. That’s all that’s important now”. *****JASMINES POVThe crackling of flames and the distant hum of laughter pulled me out of my haze of unconsciousness. My eyes fluttered open, and I found myself sprawled on the cold forest floor. The sharp scent of burning wood mingled with the aroma of the trees. Shadows danced across my vision, and for a moment, I thought I was alone. But I wasn’t. “Rise and shine, beauty,” a masculine mocking voice called out, followed by a chorused laughter. I winced in pain, holding my head as I sat on the ground. “Who are you?” I asked the most relevant question. It was obvious we were in the woods. But doing what? Caine has mentioned how unsafe the pack was. So why would I be in the woods with strangers who stole me from bed?One of the boys walked up to me and offered to help me stand. I hesitated, but took his hand in the end, “You abducted me from my bed…” I queried, glaring at them one after the other. But they were unfazed. The once distant laughter and chants were now audible. I recognize
JASMINES POVSnarls and growls echoed through the dark woods, a primal battle unfolding before my eyes. Eric’s wolf was nothing compared to Caine’s. My heart hammered as I watched the two wolves clash, their sharp teeth snapping and claws tearing into each other. For a second, they vanished from my sight. Moments later, I heard the don’t rustle of leaves ahead of me. Caine emerged from the down part of the hill. His clothes were torn, body was covered in black smoke and sand. “Let’s go,” he said to me. I was numb until we arrived at the car. The glimpse of his chest which I caught before he walked past me registered in my head, refusing to accommodate any other thought. The journey back to the pack house was a silent one. I kept reeling through the thoughts of what happened back in the woods when Caine broke the silence. “Did anyone harm you?” He asked, stealing a glance at me. “No, I’m fine,” I answered. I had questions for him too. Like how he knew I was in the woods and that I
LUCY'S POV The blindfold that was wrapped around my eye was slowly taken off, permitting the hot rays of light to hit my face. I groaned, adjusting as much as I could to get a better posture on the chair. “She’s awake. Call her,” the distant voice of a man said, his footsteps withdrawing further away from the room. My eyes fluttered, fighting to open. But it was too weak to take the light coming at it. “You slept for too long, little one,” a second voice, which I didn’t know was close to me, said. His phone noisily dialed a number and it rang twice before a familiar female voice answered it. “What?” “Your daughter is awake,” the man said. My mother? ***** The screeching of tires sent the man beside me hurrying toward the door, and I didn’t need to see her before I knew she was the one. The door burst open, my mother strutting in line the older bitchy me she was. She halted mid-way and took off her shades, disgust etched on her face. “Who amongst you tied my daughter to a c
LUCY’S POV “What did you do to him?” I followed my father behind, throwing questions at him as he and my mother helped Adrian to his bed. He passed out in the front yard after undergoing a terrible shock. “Dad!” I yelled, trying to get his attention. But they were so focused on Adrain that I felt invincible. After successfully placing him in bed, they decided to give me an answer. “You have nothing to worry about. Adrian is fine,” “A wolf doesn’t move as fast as that,” I objected, refusing to let go of their trail. I followed them back to the dining room where they went to their meal which they abandoned to help Adrian. I checked the time, it was almost nine. “If you won’t give me answers then let me leave. The swearing-in begins at ten,” I protested. They paid deaf ears to me, quietly eating their food. The doors were locked, and the huge guys who captured me at the party were positioned at the front exits of the house. No doubt the back was guarded too. “Go to your room
CAINES POV “That’s too tight,” I told the guy who was getting me dressed. It wasn’t something I enjoyed but had to permit it because my father said it was protocol. He took off the first vest and replaced it with a better one. “Thank you,” I said, adjusting it. He left the room, leaving me all by myself staring at my reflection in the mirror. My father's words rang in my head, reminding me of how much he expected from me tonight. But before that, I needed to do something. I made my way to my father's room and went in after no one responded to my knock. It looked empty. And I began my search for it. “Caine?” My father's voice startled me from the door which I forgot to lock. “What are you doing in my room?” He turned on the lights and began walking towards me. “The…the programme for tonight. I was searching for the program for tonight,” I lied, studying his eyes to see if he bought it. He stared at me with doubt for a few seconds before proceeding towards his bed. “I t
JASMINES POV The room was quiet for a while, except for the spicy rustle of fabrics and the distant noise of the occasion coming from the Alphas’ house. I stood motionless, staring at the woman in the mirror whom I could barely recognize. Draped in a black sleek gown, its fabric clinging to my figure and cascading down my knees until they touched my ankles. Its simplicity was unique, its sleeveless design leaving my shoulders and collarbone exposed and glowing under the sheen of carefully applied oil. “You look…exquisite,” the lady who was getting me dressed for the occasion said, forcing a smile to play around my lips. “Thank you,” I said, waiting for her to leave my side before I moved out of the chair to take in the full beauty. How could I look this way and let them bully me all my years in high school? My red hair stood out, perfectly oiled and aligned to fall my shoulders in a curl. “Has he arrived?” I asked the lady. But she shook her head in negation. “I’ll go co
JASMINES POV I sat in that crowd for almost two hours pondering on Caine’s words. It sounded like an invitation to treat, one which could lead me into trouble. But it was a nice offer, yet one I could not accept because he was dating my best friend. After hours of sitting and watching, my babe was finally called. I climbed the stage, the spotlight on me as Alpha Morgan gave the second microphone to me. He asked me questions that I had seen In the leaflet which Caine gave me. We were six questions down, the crowd cheering with every correct answer I had until the last. “Every pack needs a new leader the old one is gone. Who amongst my sons do you think has that in him?” I truer to understand the nature of the question as the silence in the hall grew. It sounded tricky, but we all knew the answer. “Caine,” “And why?” He threw a second question, staring at me closely. “He…urm. He’s strong, carries everyone along, protective, and…” “And not because you love him?” Alpha Morga
JASMINES POV We were racing towards the room where the rest were. Luckily, Lucy’s aunt was there before us. She’d already done what she could to revive Lucy and now she was breathing properly. “Mrs Elena,” I called, letting her pull me into a hug. “How’s she?” I asked. “You worry so much, kid. Lucy will be fine. I’ve written a list of drugs you should get her by morning. She has refused to come home for months. So when she wakes, do send my regards,” Mrs Elena said before leaving. What did she mean Lucy had refused to come home for months? The last time we made inquiries about her she said she was helping her aunt out. I waved it aside, joining my best friend on the bed. Her skin was pale, the blood on her torso staining the bandage which was carefully wrapped around it. “We should get some rest,” Caine broke the silence. “Not to worry, I’m good here,” I said without looking. They left me alone with her, and I slid myself under her duvet, wrapping my arms around her as I dr
JASMINE’S POV “Can I have a word with you?” I asked, stealing glances at Bryan who was looking out of the window. Caine was still answering a call at the garage while I pulled Lucy to a corner. “That’s him,” I blurted. “Him? What do you mean by him?” “My ex, Lucy, Bryan. That’s him,” I clarified. My heart raced, my blood boiling as I mistakenly looked into his eyes. He looked away immediately, and I knew that guilt was eating him up. “Your…ex? That Bryan?” “Yes, Lucy, that's Bryan,” I answered. “Okay, chill. He’s been my work partner for a while now. I never knew he was the Bryan you were talking about,” Lucy snapped. She noticed that wasn’t going to get me calm, so instead, she took my hands and pulled me closer to her. “Hey, nothing is going on between us, he’s just a colleague. I am with Caine, remember?” She asked. I didn’t want to give her a response, but the way she looked into my eyes demanded one. I nodded consecutively. “Yeah, yeah,” I breathed. “An
LUCY’S POV “Whatever this is, Luce, it’s not normal,” Bryan said, inching closer to me. I sighed, falling back on the wooden chair behind me. We stood for almost ten minutes, waiting for Adrian to finish up with his meal. When he was finally done, he crept out from the darkness, the red eyes still glowing as he made himself visible. I felt tears brewing in my eyes as I stood up and tossed a jacket to him. “Put these on”. “How long has he been this way,” Bryan asked, helping me with the empty blood bags. “A month, two or three weeks. I can’t really tell. All I know is that there was something wrong with him the last time I went home,” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” Adrian interrupted, walking out of the darkness completely. He exhaled, slowly opening his eyes. The red was gone, likewise the rage. “Dad did something new, and for the first time it worked,” “For the first time?” I asked, trying to process what he meant. “Have there been other trials, Adrian?” “Yeah…they all
LUCY'S POVMy heart skipped a beat as the bag fell from my shoulder, the blood bags which I had stolen from the pack clinic sprawling on the floor. “Oh my God! Caine!” I exclaimed, trying to hide the guilt as I started linking them up with a rush. I tossed them into the bag, not paying attention to whatever he was saying.“Lucy, I asked a question!” He pulled my shoulder, sending me to the floor. I fell on my butt, wincing in pain. “Oh my…Luce, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to,”“Stay away from me,” I yelled, stopping him with an extended palm. I took my time on the floor, thinking of what lie to give to him so he wouldn’t go asking questions. “Lucy…I didn’t mean to hit you in that manner,” he apologized, taking further steps closer to me. I burst into tears, burying my head in my legs. That was the first excuse I could garner from my thoughts, just so I’d have enough time to think. “Don’t touch me, Caine,” I whimpered, sobbing into my palms. “You almost ruined it all. My efforts. My har
CAINES POV“You shouldn’t have moved the bodies,” Sheriff Sherwood returned to us, pocketing his gun.“We’re sorry, we just couldn’t stand and do nothing,” I replied. He gestured with his head for us to walk with him, and we didn’t stop until we were out of the crime scene, standing amid police vans and ambulances. I knew what he wanted to say just by looking at him. “Look, I’m sorry uncle, I just had to call in this favor. I understand you’ve helped us a lot of times, and my dad probably owes you for the countless favors you have rendered…”“Kid…”“Just…please. This is more like an outbreak than a crime scene. It’s…” I paused, staring at the bodies that were being moved. “It’s dark,” I completed. Uncle Sherwood, my father's younger brother, was the family’s stray child. He started by not meeting his wolf when he was younger, by hanging out in the human world, and always sneaking out of the house. According to my father, he got into more trouble than we could count. Especially with
JASMINES POVI was too wasted to act. I just sat there, letting the chaos around me do its thing. My head fell to the chair, watching as the ceiling traveled in circles. I thought I saw some runes on them, calling into me with its blue glowing light. They looked pretty, and I extended my hands, wishing I could float in the air and know what they felt like. But the music in the room died down, cutting my solemn moment short.“Let’s go, Jasmine,” I heard Caines voice. He sounded muffled, and I couldn’t see his face. “You’re drunk, how much did you have to drink?” He asked, throwing my hand around his shoulder and grabbing me from the waist. I knew what was happening around me, but at the same time, I didn’t. For a second I thought I was levitating, but then whenever I looked at Caine, that hope was gone. I didn’t feel sad or anything, just…empty. For once., nothing bothered me. Caine led me out of the room, and to stop my eyes from hurting, I closed them and rested my head on his sh
JASMINES POVI pressed my hand against my chest, leaning on the side of the wall as my mind spiraled out of control. Thoughts flew in like my mind was a passageway for them, causing my breath to come out ragged. A lot had happened in just what?—three days? And yet there was still someone downstairs calling me a murderer. How was I supposed to face all these while trying to focus on what wolf I would train? Not to speak of my father's deal with Natalia. I heaved a sigh, halted before my mirror, and ran my hands down my hair. The echoes of laughter and muffled sounds of music traveled into my room, it was a room party which I was informed about but declined. But I couldn’t stay in my room, not with all these thoughts running into my head. I needed a distraction, and the room party just seemed like it.With a little touch on my face and hair, I made my way to the room. Room 27. I knocked twice and the door flung open almost immediately, revealing an unfamiliar face. “I know you,” he
CAINE’S POV“Get off her!” I raced past Jojo and Imani, almost knocking them down as I made my way to Jasmine and Isha. I pulled Isha off her and flung her to the feet of her brothers. “Keep your eyes on her!” I yelled at them. For a second, I thought I saw the disappointment in their eyes. They helped Isha up, holding her still despite her aggressive kicks to be set free and yolk her into the living room. “Are you okay?” I extended my hand to help her up. “Yeah,” she coughed, almost falling back on my shoulder. Lucy stepped in between us. “I’ll take her from here,” she said, pulling Jasmine away from me. We all went into the living room but were divided. Jojo and Lucy were with Jasmine, while Harper, Spencer, and Imani were with Isha. I could already sense trouble coming hard at us. “She killed them,” Isha cried, sobbing in the arms of her brothers. “We’ll deal with that later, Isha,” I tried to keep her calm, but that made her angrier. Her blood-red eyes shot angrily at me, sn
JASMINES POVThoughts. More thoughts. Extra thoughts. All night, that was all running through my mind. A brother? I scoffed, turning to the other side of the bed. That was when I realized the sun was out. I’d spent all night pondering on Natalia’s words. I wanted to come down from my bed and feed my thirst, but my body isn't encouraging. I needed rest, even if it was for an hour or two. I shut my eyes, hoping to sleep this time. And just when I thought I was drifting into sleep, a knock came on my door. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up on the bed. The door opened, it was Caine. “Long night?” He asked, walking into my room. I sighed, collapsing on my bed. “How’s Jerry?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. They were beginning to feel heavy with sleep, but with Caine in my room, I knew my day had just begun. “He’s recovering well. Just the…you know…” he said, helping himself to a chair opposite my bed. I sat back up, holding my banging head with both hands. “Cool,” I dragged. “I came t
JASMINES POV “Where do we start from?” I asked Natalia, slowly walking to the glass while I maintained eye contact with her. “Trust,” she blurted, standing up and walking to the edge of the glass. I halted in front of her, a smile crawling up my lips. “Trust is the last thing you could ask for from me,” I replied, holding the gaze until he nodded with her hands going up in the air. “I’d understand. I mean who would want to trust me after going through that betrayal from her mother,” “She did it to keep me safe,” I defended my mom despite how it hurt me to know about all this. But I guess Natalia could see beneath my words of defense like she knew I was broken. “Did she? I mean…look at the damage she has caused you. She’s made you look weak…you’ve become a mockery…so much for someone who falls under…” “Answers,” I interrupted, holding back the tears in my eyes. The lock of the door clicked from outside, and I quickly took a glance at the key hanging in my trousers. Someone el
