CAINES POV
Pain. That was the first thing I felt when I woke up. A searing burn in my abdomen that felt like molten fire. My wolf stirred weakly, groaning against the effects of the silver bullet lodged deep in me. After a while of having a blurred vision, the walls surrounding me became clear. “Thought you wouldn’t make it,” a voice sneered, snapping me completely into the moment. My eyes followed the sound of the voice and I found her standing by the window opposite where I was. I struggled to stand, but the metals binding my skin burned deep, frying my flesh. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” she said and turned to me. It was her—-the wolf hunter. I ignored what she said and struggled again, trying to ignore the pains from the silver burn. I growled, giving up as I felt my wolf wince in my head. “What do you want?” I rasped the taste of blood on my tongue. “Answers. I want answers, Caine,” she replied, covering the gap between us. Her voice wavered, betraying the confidence she mustered to walk up to me. It was laced with pain…from an unhealed wound. “I’ve told you…girl…” “Isha,” she cut me short. “My name is Isha Montano,” “And what am I supposed to do with that information?” I said almost immediately. It got her upset, and she started playing her fingers around the trigger of the gun she held. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the gun in her hand. I wasn’t healed completely from the first shot, another could kill me. “You’re wasting your time, Isha,” I spat, pulling at the restraints again. The silver burned, but I didn’t care. “If you wanted me dead, you would have left me lying on that cold forest floor. But you saved me, which means you can’t kill me…at least not until you get what you want,” I said, my voice dropping at the last statement. “You’re right, I don’t want to kill you…yet,” her jaw clenched. She dropped the gun and picked a silver knife, placed it under the sun’s ray, and directed its glint towards me. I screamed as the glint came in contact with my face, burning part of my flesh before she took it away. “But until then…you’ll remain my pet. And if eventually, I get the answers I want from your friend…what was her name…?” she stopped to think with her index striking her forehead. “Yeah…Jasmine,” I growled as she mentioned Jasmine, my wolf reeling in defense. “Then I’ll give you to the rest of the hunters to decide your fate. I had no beef with werewolves. My family stayed out of the hunting game, yet…this is how your kind paid us,” she titled away immediately just before the tears brewing in her eyes dropped. “You think all werewolves are the same?” I broke the little silence that fell in after her words. She turned a little over her shoulder, dropping the knife on the table. “Jasmine is different, I am…I am different. And I can prove that to you?” “Don’t lie to me!” She barked. She took steps closer, took out a knife from her pocket, and placed it on my neck. “I know it was a werewolf. You see that book there,” she pointed with her other hand. My eyes trailed the book lying on the table. “Look at it, animal!” She yelled, applying more pressure on the knife. I felt my blood oozing out as it pierced my skin. “It says everything about your kind! That death…and the person behind it…must be killed! And I’ll see to that! They are dangerous…even for your kind,” she yelled. I didn’t know what else to do, but laughter just escaped my mouth. It threw her back a little, but I just kept going until she picked up the gun again. “What makes you think I am not the one?” I dared, glaring at her. My wolf reeled in, almost taking over my body, but I kept him down for a while, leaving just my blue glowing eyes. Her jaw clenched the anger in her seething through her pores as her finger traced the trigger. “You monster!” She cursed, lifting the gun to aim. Without warning, a wolf burst through the glass window and pounced on her. They rolled down the wooden floor until Isha was flung into a wall. I recognized the wolf even before she morphed back to her human form. “Lucy,” I breathed, relief coursing through my veins as Lucy morphed into her human form. She raced to me and started taking off the metals. “How did you know where I was?” I asked, my breath coming out ragged. “Your scent…” she said, kissed me, and pulled me out of the chair. “This way,” she dragged me along. Wait…wait…wait,” I pulled away from her grip and returned to the table, I grabbed the book and took a final glance at Isha who was struggling to get to her gun before racing out with Lucy. ***** Every step was a struggle as we raced through the woods. My body kept screaming for rest, but I didn’t dare stop. Isha mentioned something about the rest of the wolf hunters, so there were still more of them out there. She might have called for backup. “Lucy,” I gasped, my voice hoarse as I stopped to catch my breath. My eyes scanned the woods and the direction we were going. Lucy stopped and raced back to me. “We must keep going Caine, she’s coming after us,” she grabbed my hand, but I pulled her back. “No…no, this is the wrong path. We might have taken a wrong turn,” I breathed, attempting to pull her into a race to find the right track, but she resisted. “No…Caine. This way leads to the stream. We’ll find shelter there until…” “Why seek shelter when we can go straight to the pack house through this route?” I cut her short, my eyes searching hers for an answer. “Lucy, you know this path leads to the rogues and the forbidden island,” I reminded, but she only shrugged. What can’t we handle together?” She tried to pull me again, but I resisted this time. “Wait, Lucy. How did you find me?” I asked, my wolf stirring suspiciously in me. I turned her palms, and a memory of her pulling out the silver wares without getting burnt flashed through my mind. “And how didn’t you get burnt by the silver?” I asked under my breath. It was then that it hit me—her scent. Or rather, the absence of it. “You’re not Lucy,” I said, my voice slow and dangerous. Her lips curled in a sinister smile and her hands shot out from mine. “Clever boy,” she snickered, her voice morphing lightly. The illusion melted away like smoke, and in its place stood an unfamiliar face. “Does this look better?” She taunted. I turned to run, but shadows crawled out of the sand and wrapped around me, binding my arms and legs. I fought against the restraints, but they held tightly. “I already said this before…you new gen wolves are dumb,” she muttered. Before I could respond, her form shifted again. This time—it wore my face. “I’ll do well to send my regards to your father,” my clone said, leaving me fighting the shadows as he walked away. ********JASMINES POV I sat at the back of the truck, waiting and watching as the dogs and wolves rallied in the woods, searching for Caine. It was almost an hour since we left the pack house to search for him. A blue truck pulled up, and I saw Spencer behind the wheel. “Spencer…oh thank God,” I muttered and got out of the car. Not that I was happy to see him, but at least people Caine other than myself just pulled up, and their assistance might help us find him faster. What way did he go?” Spencer asked, walking up to me. “Jas?” Lucy ran from the other side of the car into my arms. We hugged for a while before she pulled away and started running her hands around my body. “You’re okay…thank goodness. Where’s my boyfriend? Where’s Caine?” She asked, hyperventilating. “His body was… was urm…taken from the scene last night,” I answered, attempting to pull her into a hug. But she pulled me away and hit my hands off her shoulder. “Taken? What do you mean by taken? You couldn’t protect
JASMINES POV My heart thudded as I started making my way back to the Alpha office. He chased after me and pulled me back. “Think your actions through before jumping into them, Janine,” he warned, tightening his grip around my wrist. I still couldn’t get my eyes off the door of his office. My dad was in there with a Seeker, how confident was the alpha to let just the two of them stay in there? “We need to build trust to know before we strike. In the meantime, I want you all to find Caine. I know he’s still out there,” Alpha Morgan said, finally letting go of my hand. He crouched and unlocked the device on my ankle. “You’re…free to go with them. Your father believes you won’t cause any harm, so I want to believe in that too. Dave will join you guys. Find my son and bring him home,” he said, holding my shoulder. He turned to Lucy who was whimpering on Imani’s shoulder. “Hey, come here,” he said softly, taking her into his arms. “We’ll find him, okay? We’ll find him,” he console
JASMINE’S POV The journey back to the pack house was filled with silence, only the heavy breaths of Lucy as she leaned in Caine. When we arrived, my father and the alpha were waiting outside the gates. “Dad,” I ran to him the moment Harper packed the car. His gaze was fixed on the girl who was being led by the twins. “Isha, the last of their circle,” I told my dad. “By circle, you mean family?” My dad asked and I nodded. His face still had doubt written all over it. “But she’s not human,” he said. I shrugged, leaning closer to him. “I believe there’s a story behind that. I’m just glad you’re okay,” I gave his arm a gentle squeeze and rested my head on it. “What happened when we left?” “The seeker?” He asked. “Come see for yourself”. He led me to the same room where I was locked a day ago. The lady was sitting in the glass box, playing with her hair. She looked sad when we walked in, but after seeing us, she had some kind of mood swing, her smile growing wild as she stood up
JASMINES POV The next time I opened my eyes, I found myself in the brightly lit room. My chest felt like a heavy weight was lifted off it as my consciousness slowly kicked in. My body was sore, and my head was pounding as I tried to recall what happened. Distant voices pulled my attention towards the other end of the room, and once again, I recognized the voice. It was my dad's. He was talking with Alpha Morgan again, but this time, there was a feminine voice in their midst. “You’re awake,” Caines’ voice drifted my attention from the conversation being held at the door. I tried to sit up but my head fell back to the bed after I felt a sharp stinging pain in it. Caine rushed to where I was and assisted me. I hesitated for a while finally giving in. “Hi,” I muttered, leaning against the wall. He sat in the chair opposite me and pushed a table containing a steaming cup of tea. “Hi,” he returned, eyes away from me. “This would give you some energy,” he passed the cup to me. W
JASMINES POV “Where do we start from?” I asked Natalia, slowly walking to the glass while I maintained eye contact with her. “Trust,” she blurted, standing up and walking to the edge of the glass. I halted in front of her, a smile crawling up my lips. “Trust is the last thing you could ask for from me,” I replied, holding the gaze until he nodded with her hands going up in the air. “I’d understand. I mean who would want to trust me after going through that betrayal from her mother,” “She did it to keep me safe,” I defended my mom despite how it hurt me to know about all this. But I guess Natalia could see beneath my words of defense like she knew I was broken. “Did she? I mean…look at the damage she has caused you. She’s made you look weak…you’ve become a mockery…so much for someone who falls under…” “Answers,” I interrupted, holding back the tears in my eyes. The lock of the door clicked from outside, and I quickly took a glance at the key hanging in my trousers. Someone el
JASMINES POVThoughts. More thoughts. Extra thoughts. All night, that was all running through my mind. A brother? I scoffed, turning to the other side of the bed. That was when I realized the sun was out. I’d spent all night pondering on Natalia’s words. I wanted to come down from my bed and feed my thirst, but my body isn't encouraging. I needed rest, even if it was for an hour or two. I shut my eyes, hoping to sleep this time. And just when I thought I was drifting into sleep, a knock came on my door. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up on the bed. The door opened, it was Caine. “Long night?” He asked, walking into my room. I sighed, collapsing on my bed. “How’s Jerry?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. They were beginning to feel heavy with sleep, but with Caine in my room, I knew my day had just begun. “He’s recovering well. Just the…you know…” he said, helping himself to a chair opposite my bed. I sat back up, holding my banging head with both hands. “Cool,” I dragged. “I came t
CAINE’S POV“Get off her!” I raced past Jojo and Imani, almost knocking them down as I made my way to Jasmine and Isha. I pulled Isha off her and flung her to the feet of her brothers. “Keep your eyes on her!” I yelled at them. For a second, I thought I saw the disappointment in their eyes. They helped Isha up, holding her still despite her aggressive kicks to be set free and yolk her into the living room. “Are you okay?” I extended my hand to help her up. “Yeah,” she coughed, almost falling back on my shoulder. Lucy stepped in between us. “I’ll take her from here,” she said, pulling Jasmine away from me. We all went into the living room but were divided. Jojo and Lucy were with Jasmine, while Harper, Spencer, and Imani were with Isha. I could already sense trouble coming hard at us. “She killed them,” Isha cried, sobbing in the arms of her brothers. “We’ll deal with that later, Isha,” I tried to keep her calm, but that made her angrier. JASMINES POVI pressed my hand against my chest, leaning on the side of the wall as my mind spiraled out of control. Thoughts flew in like my mind was a passageway for them, causing my breath to come out ragged. A lot had happened in just what?—three days? And yet there was still someone downstairs calling me a murderer. How was I supposed to face all these while trying to focus on what wolf I would train? Not to speak of my father's deal with Natalia. I heaved a sigh, halted before my mirror, and ran my hands down my hair. The echoes of laughter and muffled sounds of music traveled into my room, it was a room party which I was informed about but declined. But I couldn’t stay in my room, not with all these thoughts running into my head. I needed a distraction, and the room party just seemed like it.With a little touch on my face and hair, I made my way to the room. Room 27. I knocked twice and the door flung open almost immediately, revealing an unfamiliar face. “I know you,” he
JASMINE’S POV “Can I have a word with you?” I asked, stealing glances at Bryan who was looking out of the window. Caine was still answering a call at the garage while I pulled Lucy to a corner. “That’s him,” I blurted. “Him? What do you mean by him?” “My ex, Lucy, Bryan. That’s him,” I clarified. My heart raced, my blood boiling as I mistakenly looked into his eyes. He looked away immediately, and I knew that guilt was eating him up. “Your…ex? That Bryan?” “Yes, Lucy, that's Bryan,” I answered. “Okay, chill. He’s been my work partner for a while now. I never knew he was the Bryan you were talking about,” Lucy snapped. She noticed that wasn’t going to get me calm, so instead, she took my hands and pulled me closer to her. “Hey, nothing is going on between us, he’s just a colleague. I am with Caine, remember?” She asked. I didn’t want to give her a response, but the way she looked into my eyes demanded one. I nodded consecutively. “Yeah, yeah,” I breathed. “An
LUCY’S POV “Whatever this is, Luce, it’s not normal,” Bryan said, inching closer to me. I sighed, falling back on the wooden chair behind me. We stood for almost ten minutes, waiting for Adrian to finish up with his meal. When he was finally done, he crept out from the darkness, the red eyes still glowing as he made himself visible. I felt tears brewing in my eyes as I stood up and tossed a jacket to him. “Put these on”. “How long has he been this way,” Bryan asked, helping me with the empty blood bags. “A month, two or three weeks. I can’t really tell. All I know is that there was something wrong with him the last time I went home,” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” Adrian interrupted, walking out of the darkness completely. He exhaled, slowly opening his eyes. The red was gone, likewise the rage. “Dad did something new, and for the first time it worked,” “For the first time?” I asked, trying to process what he meant. “Have there been other trials, Adrian?” “Yeah…they all
LUCY'S POVMy heart skipped a beat as the bag fell from my shoulder, the blood bags which I had stolen from the pack clinic sprawling on the floor. “Oh my God! Caine!” I exclaimed, trying to hide the guilt as I started linking them up with a rush. I tossed them into the bag, not paying attention to whatever he was saying.“Lucy, I asked a question!” He pulled my shoulder, sending me to the floor. I fell on my butt, wincing in pain. “Oh my…Luce, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to,”“Stay away from me,” I yelled, stopping him with an extended palm. I took my time on the floor, thinking of what lie to give to him so he wouldn’t go asking questions. “Lucy…I didn’t mean to hit you in that manner,” he apologized, taking further steps closer to me. I burst into tears, burying my head in my legs. That was the first excuse I could garner from my thoughts, just so I’d have enough time to think. “Don’t touch me, Caine,” I whimpered, sobbing into my palms. “You almost ruined it all. My efforts. My har
CAINES POV“You shouldn’t have moved the bodies,” Sheriff Sherwood returned to us, pocketing his gun.“We’re sorry, we just couldn’t stand and do nothing,” I replied. He gestured with his head for us to walk with him, and we didn’t stop until we were out of the crime scene, standing amid police vans and ambulances. I knew what he wanted to say just by looking at him. “Look, I’m sorry uncle, I just had to call in this favor. I understand you’ve helped us a lot of times, and my dad probably owes you for the countless favors you have rendered…”“Kid…”“Just…please. This is more like an outbreak than a crime scene. It’s…” I paused, staring at the bodies that were being moved. “It’s dark,” I completed. Uncle Sherwood, my father's younger brother, was the family’s stray child. He started by not meeting his wolf when he was younger, by hanging out in the human world, and always sneaking out of the house. According to my father, he got into more trouble than we could count. Especially with
JASMINES POVI was too wasted to act. I just sat there, letting the chaos around me do its thing. My head fell to the chair, watching as the ceiling traveled in circles. I thought I saw some runes on them, calling into me with its blue glowing light. They looked pretty, and I extended my hands, wishing I could float in the air and know what they felt like. But the music in the room died down, cutting my solemn moment short.“Let’s go, Jasmine,” I heard Caines voice. He sounded muffled, and I couldn’t see his face. “You’re drunk, how much did you have to drink?” He asked, throwing my hand around his shoulder and grabbing me from the waist. I knew what was happening around me, but at the same time, I didn’t. For a second I thought I was levitating, but then whenever I looked at Caine, that hope was gone. I didn’t feel sad or anything, just…empty. For once., nothing bothered me. Caine led me out of the room, and to stop my eyes from hurting, I closed them and rested my head on his sh
