JASMINES POV
The police sirens blared, disturbing the peace of the night. Caine and I took another path different from that which we used to come up the mountain. The base was already surrounded by the police and wolf guards, waiting for a command to engage. “Hurry, this way,” Caine called, pulling my hands towards another path. We ducked under the branches and raced through the foliage, the distant shouts and blaring of the sirens drawing closer. My heart hammered in my heart as adrenaline coursed through my nerves, pushing every muscle in me to run faster. Caine glanced over the trees above us, pausing for a second as we took a scan of the environment around us. “Do you even know where we are going?” I asked, hyperventilating as I grabbed my knees. “We’ll lose them if we can make it to the stream. There’s a tunnel at the bank which leads directly into the pack house. I could sneak you into a car and drive you back to my father's house,” Caine said, withdrawing from where he was after a torchlight waved passed us. “What if they catch us before that?” I panted, struggling to gain my balance after I moved backward and stumbled over a root. Caine caught me just in time, pressing his index against my lips. “We’re not alone,” he whispered. A clock snapped through the air, drawing our attention. Caine and I turned to face the familiar figure. The girl from the back of the diner. The wolf hunter, “Don’t even think about it,” she bellowed, holding the gun firmly with an improved stance as Caine grew out his claws. “I knew it…liars,” she hissed, the pain in her tone giving me goosebumps. I was about to say something to her when Caine interrupted. “Look, brown-hair…you might not have noticed but we’re in a bit of chaos. The people chasing us, they’re pretty worse than you think we are. So a bit of advice, run!” Caine said and pulled my hand. The sound of a bullet pierced through the air, throwing me to my knees with my hands on my head. “Make another move and the next will be to your brain!” the girl yelled, her hands fidgeting and fighting with the gun. Her ragged breathing filled the air until Caines’ voice broke through it. “Jasmine,” he called faintly. I turned to him, kneeling a little behind me, with both hands holding his stomach as his blood oozed out. He was shot. “Run,” he whispered, forcing his wolf to take control. From his struggle, I knew it was a silver billet he had in him. “I’m not leaving you!” I cried, rushing to assist him. “I’ll blow your head off if you make another move. You and I can make this go easy. Who killed my family!” The girl yelled, taking distressed steps forward. “Don’t mess with me, girl!” She cried, corking the gun again, But I didn’t care. All my wolf wanted was to get Caine to safety. His blood was oozing out with an unusual speed, scaring the shit out of me. I applied pressure on the wound, tearing up as I felt his body grow cold. “Run, Jasmine. I can make it,” he quivered. “‘No…I’m not leaving you,” I replied, pulling him closer to me. The sounds of the guards and the sirens closed in, and soon, I could hear the heavy boots of the guards heading our way, There was only one to get Caine to safety without harming anyone else. “Give me a name!” The girl yelled. I pushed away from Caine, slowly got to my feet, and lifted my hands in the air. At that moment, I prayed for that surge of energy. But I guess it wasn’t there when I needed it to save someone else. With a swift turn, I raced down the sloppy hill, running in scattered lanes as bullets were fired from my back, “I’m here! Help!” I yelled, racing towards the guards. “I’m right here!” I screamed again. I noticed the change in their motion, and soon, I was standing before a ton of wolf guards, the lights from their guns blinding my eyes. I raised both hands in the air and fell to my knees, surrendering. But I guess that wasn’t enough for someone considered a threat. My head got knocked with the base of a gun, and my world went blank in a flash. ********** My head throbbed as I slowly regained consciousness. Voices drifted from behind the thick curtains and door, sharp and escalating. “You can’t be treating her like this. She’s my daughter, not a prisoner!” My father's voice boomed, filled with anger and frustration. “We have nothing to be scared about at this stage. We can still tame her. She hasn’t met either wolf,” he argued. “Your daughter is responsible for the death of over a hundred humans. Look at the damage caused in her dormitory…” “She was attacked!” My father defended. “And what? It suddenly becomes legal to possess such power?” Alpha Morgan returned. I slipped out of the bed and staggered my way to the door. Halfway, I lost balance and fell. “Jasmine wasn’t running for no reason. She’s been treated unfairly even when she was still a teenager in your school,” my father added. I thought I heard the low growl of his wolf after his statement. Was he about to fight the alpha? “What did you expect from a wolf whom you treat in such a manner? She was trying to survive!” “By escaping? Joseph, don't let family ties cloud your judgment. She’s just like her mother. A predator. Have you even reached out to her? To know why she lied to you…why she lied to us all those years? Have you? Or you’re too scared to know the truth?” The Alpha thundered. My father’s growl was the response to his words. I heard a loud thud in the corridor, followed by the slashing of claws and guttural snarls. They were fighting. I forced myself off my feet, hurrying to the door to know what exactly was going on. I almost slipped as I stepped on the blood spewed on the floor. “Dad! Stop!” I yelled, holding my head which was still in pain. The alpha was thrown across the corridor, and my father stood, his wolf slowly over his features. “Dad!” I yelled, drawing his attention. His blue eyes flickered with surrender, and soon, those animal features were gone. The exit door opened and Caine’s younger brother ran in. “Ohh, my God! Dad!” He exclaimed, rushing to his father who was regaining himself. “I’m fine. How did it go?” Alpha Morgan asked. I turned to him, trying to read the room. Why was Dave here and not Caine? “Before we got there, his body was moved. Caines’ gone,” Dave dropped. ******CAINES POV Pain. That was the first thing I felt when I woke up. A searing burn in my abdomen that felt like molten fire. My wolf stirred weakly, groaning against the effects of the silver bullet lodged deep in me. After a while of having a blurred vision, the walls surrounding me became clear. “Thought you wouldn’t make it,” a voice sneered, snapping me completely into the moment. My eyes followed the sound of the voice and I found her standing by the window opposite where I was. I struggled to stand, but the metals binding my skin burned deep, frying my flesh. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” she said and turned to me. It was her—-the wolf hunter. I ignored what she said and struggled again, trying to ignore the pains from the silver burn. I growled, giving up as I felt my wolf wince in my head. “What do you want?” I rasped the taste of blood on my tongue. “Answers. I want answers, Caine,” she replied, covering the gap between us. Her voice wavered, betraying the confiden
JASMINES POV I sat at the back of the truck, waiting and watching as the dogs and wolves rallied in the woods, searching for Caine. It was almost an hour since we left the pack house to search for him. A blue truck pulled up, and I saw Spencer behind the wheel. “Spencer…oh thank God,” I muttered and got out of the car. Not that I was happy to see him, but at least people Caine other than myself just pulled up, and their assistance might help us find him faster. What way did he go?” Spencer asked, walking up to me. “Jas?” Lucy ran from the other side of the car into my arms. We hugged for a while before she pulled away and started running her hands around my body. “You’re okay…thank goodness. Where’s my boyfriend? Where’s Caine?” She asked, hyperventilating. “His body was… was urm…taken from the scene last night,” I answered, attempting to pull her into a hug. But she pulled me away and hit my hands off her shoulder. “Taken? What do you mean by taken? You couldn’t protect
JASMINES POV My heart thudded as I started making my way back to the Alpha office. He chased after me and pulled me back. “Think your actions through before jumping into them, Janine,” he warned, tightening his grip around my wrist. I still couldn’t get my eyes off the door of his office. My dad was in there with a Seeker, how confident was the alpha to let just the two of them stay in there? “We need to build trust to know before we strike. In the meantime, I want you all to find Caine. I know he’s still out there,” Alpha Morgan said, finally letting go of my hand. He crouched and unlocked the device on my ankle. “You’re…free to go with them. Your father believes you won’t cause any harm, so I want to believe in that too. Dave will join you guys. Find my son and bring him home,” he said, holding my shoulder. He turned to Lucy who was whimpering on Imani’s shoulder. “Hey, come here,” he said softly, taking her into his arms. “We’ll find him, okay? We’ll find him,” he console
JASMINE’S POV The journey back to the pack house was filled with silence, only the heavy breaths of Lucy as she leaned in Caine. When we arrived, my father and the alpha were waiting outside the gates. “Dad,” I ran to him the moment Harper packed the car. His gaze was fixed on the girl who was being led by the twins. “Isha, the last of their circle,” I told my dad. “By circle, you mean family?” My dad asked and I nodded. His face still had doubt written all over it. “But she’s not human,” he said. I shrugged, leaning closer to him. “I believe there’s a story behind that. I’m just glad you’re okay,” I gave his arm a gentle squeeze and rested my head on it. “What happened when we left?” “The seeker?” He asked. “Come see for yourself”. He led me to the same room where I was locked a day ago. The lady was sitting in the glass box, playing with her hair. She looked sad when we walked in, but after seeing us, she had some kind of mood swing, her smile growing wild as she stood up
JASMINES POV The next time I opened my eyes, I found myself in the brightly lit room. My chest felt like a heavy weight was lifted off it as my consciousness slowly kicked in. My body was sore, and my head was pounding as I tried to recall what happened. Distant voices pulled my attention towards the other end of the room, and once again, I recognized the voice. It was my dad's. He was talking with Alpha Morgan again, but this time, there was a feminine voice in their midst. “You’re awake,” Caines’ voice drifted my attention from the conversation being held at the door. I tried to sit up but my head fell back to the bed after I felt a sharp stinging pain in it. Caine rushed to where I was and assisted me. I hesitated for a while finally giving in. “Hi,” I muttered, leaning against the wall. He sat in the chair opposite me and pushed a table containing a steaming cup of tea. “Hi,” he returned, eyes away from me. “This would give you some energy,” he passed the cup to me. W
JASMINES POV “Where do we start from?” I asked Natalia, slowly walking to the glass while I maintained eye contact with her. “Trust,” she blurted, standing up and walking to the edge of the glass. I halted in front of her, a smile crawling up my lips. “Trust is the last thing you could ask for from me,” I replied, holding the gaze until he nodded with her hands going up in the air. “I’d understand. I mean who would want to trust me after going through that betrayal from her mother,” “She did it to keep me safe,” I defended my mom despite how it hurt me to know about all this. But I guess Natalia could see beneath my words of defense like she knew I was broken. “Did she? I mean…look at the damage she has caused you. She’s made you look weak…you’ve become a mockery…so much for someone who falls under…” “Answers,” I interrupted, holding back the tears in my eyes. The lock of the door clicked from outside, and I quickly took a glance at the key hanging in my trousers. Someone el
JASMINES POVThoughts. More thoughts. Extra thoughts. All night, that was all running through my mind. A brother? I scoffed, turning to the other side of the bed. That was when I realized the sun was out. I’d spent all night pondering on Natalia’s words. I wanted to come down from my bed and feed my thirst, but my body isn't encouraging. I needed rest, even if it was for an hour or two. I shut my eyes, hoping to sleep this time. And just when I thought I was drifting into sleep, a knock came on my door. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up on the bed. The door opened, it was Caine. “Long night?” He asked, walking into my room. I sighed, collapsing on my bed. “How’s Jerry?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. They were beginning to feel heavy with sleep, but with Caine in my room, I knew my day had just begun. “He’s recovering well. Just the…you know…” he said, helping himself to a chair opposite my bed. I sat back up, holding my banging head with both hands. “Cool,” I dragged. “I came t
CAINE’S POV“Get off her!” I raced past Jojo and Imani, almost knocking them down as I made my way to Jasmine and Isha. I pulled Isha off her and flung her to the feet of her brothers. “Keep your eyes on her!” I yelled at them. For a second, I thought I saw the disappointment in their eyes. They helped Isha up, holding her still despite her aggressive kicks to be set free and yolk her into the living room. “Are you okay?” I extended my hand to help her up. “Yeah,” she coughed, almost falling back on my shoulder. Lucy stepped in between us. “I’ll take her from here,” she said, pulling Jasmine away from me. We all went into the living room but were divided. Jojo and Lucy were with Jasmine, while Harper, Spencer, and Imani were with Isha. I could already sense trouble coming hard at us. “She killed them,” Isha cried, sobbing in the arms of her brothers. “We’ll deal with that later, Isha,” I tried to keep her calm, but that made her angrier. Her blood-red eyes shot angrily at me, sn
JASMINE’S POV “Can I have a word with you?” I asked, stealing glances at Bryan who was looking out of the window. Caine was still answering a call at the garage while I pulled Lucy to a corner. “That’s him,” I blurted. “Him? What do you mean by him?” “My ex, Lucy, Bryan. That’s him,” I clarified. My heart raced, my blood boiling as I mistakenly looked into his eyes. He looked away immediately, and I knew that guilt was eating him up. “Your…ex? That Bryan?” “Yes, Lucy, that's Bryan,” I answered. “Okay, chill. He’s been my work partner for a while now. I never knew he was the Bryan you were talking about,” Lucy snapped. She noticed that wasn’t going to get me calm, so instead, she took my hands and pulled me closer to her. “Hey, nothing is going on between us, he’s just a colleague. I am with Caine, remember?” She asked. I didn’t want to give her a response, but the way she looked into my eyes demanded one. I nodded consecutively. “Yeah, yeah,” I breathed. “An
LUCY’S POV “Whatever this is, Luce, it’s not normal,” Bryan said, inching closer to me. I sighed, falling back on the wooden chair behind me. We stood for almost ten minutes, waiting for Adrian to finish up with his meal. When he was finally done, he crept out from the darkness, the red eyes still glowing as he made himself visible. I felt tears brewing in my eyes as I stood up and tossed a jacket to him. “Put these on”. “How long has he been this way,” Bryan asked, helping me with the empty blood bags. “A month, two or three weeks. I can’t really tell. All I know is that there was something wrong with him the last time I went home,” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” Adrian interrupted, walking out of the darkness completely. He exhaled, slowly opening his eyes. The red was gone, likewise the rage. “Dad did something new, and for the first time it worked,” “For the first time?” I asked, trying to process what he meant. “Have there been other trials, Adrian?” “Yeah…they all
LUCY'S POVMy heart skipped a beat as the bag fell from my shoulder, the blood bags which I had stolen from the pack clinic sprawling on the floor. “Oh my God! Caine!” I exclaimed, trying to hide the guilt as I started linking them up with a rush. I tossed them into the bag, not paying attention to whatever he was saying.“Lucy, I asked a question!” He pulled my shoulder, sending me to the floor. I fell on my butt, wincing in pain. “Oh my…Luce, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to,”“Stay away from me,” I yelled, stopping him with an extended palm. I took my time on the floor, thinking of what lie to give to him so he wouldn’t go asking questions. “Lucy…I didn’t mean to hit you in that manner,” he apologized, taking further steps closer to me. I burst into tears, burying my head in my legs. That was the first excuse I could garner from my thoughts, just so I’d have enough time to think. “Don’t touch me, Caine,” I whimpered, sobbing into my palms. “You almost ruined it all. My efforts. My har
CAINES POV“You shouldn’t have moved the bodies,” Sheriff Sherwood returned to us, pocketing his gun.“We’re sorry, we just couldn’t stand and do nothing,” I replied. He gestured with his head for us to walk with him, and we didn’t stop until we were out of the crime scene, standing amid police vans and ambulances. I knew what he wanted to say just by looking at him. “Look, I’m sorry uncle, I just had to call in this favor. I understand you’ve helped us a lot of times, and my dad probably owes you for the countless favors you have rendered…”“Kid…”“Just…please. This is more like an outbreak than a crime scene. It’s…” I paused, staring at the bodies that were being moved. “It’s dark,” I completed. Uncle Sherwood, my father's younger brother, was the family’s stray child. He started by not meeting his wolf when he was younger, by hanging out in the human world, and always sneaking out of the house. According to my father, he got into more trouble than we could count. Especially with
JASMINES POVI was too wasted to act. I just sat there, letting the chaos around me do its thing. My head fell to the chair, watching as the ceiling traveled in circles. I thought I saw some runes on them, calling into me with its blue glowing light. They looked pretty, and I extended my hands, wishing I could float in the air and know what they felt like. But the music in the room died down, cutting my solemn moment short.“Let’s go, Jasmine,” I heard Caines voice. He sounded muffled, and I couldn’t see his face. “You’re drunk, how much did you have to drink?” He asked, throwing my hand around his shoulder and grabbing me from the waist. I knew what was happening around me, but at the same time, I didn’t. For a second I thought I was levitating, but then whenever I looked at Caine, that hope was gone. I didn’t feel sad or anything, just…empty. For once., nothing bothered me. Caine led me out of the room, and to stop my eyes from hurting, I closed them and rested my head on his sh
JASMINES POVI pressed my hand against my chest, leaning on the side of the wall as my mind spiraled out of control. Thoughts flew in like my mind was a passageway for them, causing my breath to come out ragged. A lot had happened in just what?—three days? And yet there was still someone downstairs calling me a murderer. How was I supposed to face all these while trying to focus on what wolf I would train? Not to speak of my father's deal with Natalia. I heaved a sigh, halted before my mirror, and ran my hands down my hair. The echoes of laughter and muffled sounds of music traveled into my room, it was a room party which I was informed about but declined. But I couldn’t stay in my room, not with all these thoughts running into my head. I needed a distraction, and the room party just seemed like it.With a little touch on my face and hair, I made my way to the room. Room 27. I knocked twice and the door flung open almost immediately, revealing an unfamiliar face. “I know you,” he
