JASMINES POV
I sat at the back of the truck, waiting and watching as the dogs and wolves rallied in the woods, searching for Caine. It was almost an hour since we left the pack house to search for him. A blue truck pulled up, and I saw Spencer behind the wheel. “Spencer…oh thank God,” I muttered and got out of the car. Not that I was happy to see him, but at least people Caine other than myself just pulled up, and their assistance might help us find him faster. What way did he go?” Spencer asked, walking up to me. “Jas?” Lucy ran from the other side of the car into my arms. We hugged for a while before she pulled away and started running her hands around my body. “You’re okay…thank goodness. Where’s my boyfriend? Where’s Caine?” She asked, hyperventilating. “His body was… was urm…taken from the scene last night,” I answered, attempting to pull her into a hug. But she pulled me away and hit my hands off her shoulder. “Taken? What do you mean by taken? You couldn’t protect him? If you couldn’t protect or defend my boyfriend, why venture into the woods with him?” She cried, breaking a part of my heart that loved her. “Luce there are better ways to handle this. Not judging me or throwing blame at me. We were both victims,” I cut her short, tears forcing their way out of my eyes. “Victim, huh?” She scoffed, blowing off the strands of hair that got mixed with her sweat. “What were you even doing in the woods at that hour with my boyfriend?” She threw another question, one that started feeding my thoughts to my guilt. I almost made out with my best friend's boyfriend. I was never going to forgive myself for that. Lucy has every reason to be mad at me right now. Yes, her manner of approach wasn’t proper, but she had every right to be mad. “Lucy we…” “Caine better be okay!” Imani burst out from behind, pulling my collars against her elbow which lay on my neck. I raised both hands in the air, just tearing up as I watched them try to console her. That was when it hit me. His scent. The dogs and wolves were all searching in the wrong direction. Imani let go of my shirt, and I turned around, towards the south. That was where his scent was coming from. Caine’s scent. Even if I had just woken up from sleep, I would still be able to identify that strong and almost toxic scent of orchid, mixed with a little bit of the sunflower scent in the morning. “Caine,” I said under my breath. I turned to alert them, but Lucy’s scream tore through the air, drawing even the attention of the guards and mate alpha. “I found him! I found Caine!” She yelled, racing off in the opposite direction where the scent was coming from. She wasn’t lying though. Caine staggered out of the vines which curled themselves around like human skeletons, surrounding the swamp. He was dirty and reeked of blood too. But his scent wasn’t there. It still lingered from the south, like it was calling my attention. But why follow a scent when he was standing right in front of me, right? The group raced to Caine and assisted him to where the car was. My dad walked up to me from behind and placed his hand on my shoulder. “He’s lucky. If it was a wolf hunter that attacked you guys last night, he shouldn’t even be on his legs,” my dad said. I had no response to give, only to stare as they helped Caine and cleaned him up. “We’re heading back. I’ll talk to the alpha concerning your confinement and see if he can let you come home to stay with me,” my father offered. I sighed, drifting my gaze to him before pulling him into a hug. “Thanks, Dad,” I muttered. I was walked to the car, but right before I stepped in, Caine called me. I froze, swallowing the lump of embarrassment in my throat. “He’s…coming,” my father sounded like he was ready to defend me, and I knew he would if Caine pulled any crazy stunts. Caine arrived at my standpoint, and all we did for almost a minute was stare at each other. Then he pulled me closer. Not into a hug, but a deep kiss. “I thought I wouldn’t see you again, Jasmine,” he said, now wrapping his arms around me in a hug. ****** “She kissed him! That’s way above forgiveness! Snitch!” Lucy’s voice echoed through the hallways of the alpha castle. I was sitting in Alpha Morgan’s office, waiting for his decision from his closed-door meeting with my father. They too were arguing. Deep down, I just prayed they would see past their fight in the corridor earlier and do something good together—like let me go back to my father. “She’s a snitch!” Lucy’s voice boomed again. I shut my eyes, trying to focus on why Caines scent wasn’t on him when he kissed me…and why he even kiss me before everyone. Was he planning on going public? “I’m gonna kill her! Low-lifed bitch!” Lucy yelled again, and I just knew it was going to be impossible to shut their voices out. “Caine…Caine…don’t go there, don’t go in there! She’s brainwashing you!” Lucy cried. I guess Caine was coming. I cleaned my eyes and braced up for more drama. It sounded a little chaotic out there until the door opened and Caine walked inside. Lucy tried to fight her way in but the door was shut on her. “Hi,” Caine said, walking to me with a smile. I pushed out of the chair immediately and signaled him to stop. “Why? You’ve made things worse for me. Do you even love me to kiss me before people we know? Why would you do…” “Yes…Jasmine,” he cut me short, taking more steps closer. “I love you,” he added, and I felt my heart sink unusually. Was I dreaming or hearing things? “What?” I breathed, finding it difficult to process. “I tried to tell you last year, Jasmine. But you were too busy with the group…” “Caine I wasn’t around last year,” I interrupted immediately. The door to the Alphas’ office opened alpha Morgan stepped out. “Caine…a word?” He called in. I stood at my spot, trying to get my thoughts together for a while, and all my mind kept drifting to the second scent in the woods. Something wasn’t adding up. After a few minutes of talking, Alpha Morgan stepped out alone. “Can I have a word with you, ms. Jasmine?” He asked. I nodded, catching a hold of my breath as he walked me out of the office. Lucy wanted to pounce on me the moment we walked out. “Enough!” The alpha ordered, silencing the chaos. After a few seconds of an anxiety-filled silence, he finally broke it. “That thing in my office isn’t my son. Caine is still out there,” he dropped, confirming my suspicions. I was on the verge of screaming in their ears that I knew it, but then I remembered… “And you left him there with my dad?” ********JASMINES POV My heart thudded as I started making my way back to the Alpha office. He chased after me and pulled me back. “Think your actions through before jumping into them, Janine,” he warned, tightening his grip around my wrist. I still couldn’t get my eyes off the door of his office. My dad was in there with a Seeker, how confident was the alpha to let just the two of them stay in there? “We need to build trust to know before we strike. In the meantime, I want you all to find Caine. I know he’s still out there,” Alpha Morgan said, finally letting go of my hand. He crouched and unlocked the device on my ankle. “You’re…free to go with them. Your father believes you won’t cause any harm, so I want to believe in that too. Dave will join you guys. Find my son and bring him home,” he said, holding my shoulder. He turned to Lucy who was whimpering on Imani’s shoulder. “Hey, come here,” he said softly, taking her into his arms. “We’ll find him, okay? We’ll find him,” he console
JASMINE’S POV The journey back to the pack house was filled with silence, only the heavy breaths of Lucy as she leaned in Caine. When we arrived, my father and the alpha were waiting outside the gates. “Dad,” I ran to him the moment Harper packed the car. His gaze was fixed on the girl who was being led by the twins. “Isha, the last of their circle,” I told my dad. “By circle, you mean family?” My dad asked and I nodded. His face still had doubt written all over it. “But she’s not human,” he said. I shrugged, leaning closer to him. “I believe there’s a story behind that. I’m just glad you’re okay,” I gave his arm a gentle squeeze and rested my head on it. “What happened when we left?” “The seeker?” He asked. “Come see for yourself”. He led me to the same room where I was locked a day ago. The lady was sitting in the glass box, playing with her hair. She looked sad when we walked in, but after seeing us, she had some kind of mood swing, her smile growing wild as she stood up
JASMINES POV The next time I opened my eyes, I found myself in the brightly lit room. My chest felt like a heavy weight was lifted off it as my consciousness slowly kicked in. My body was sore, and my head was pounding as I tried to recall what happened. Distant voices pulled my attention towards the other end of the room, and once again, I recognized the voice. It was my dad's. He was talking with Alpha Morgan again, but this time, there was a feminine voice in their midst. “You’re awake,” Caines’ voice drifted my attention from the conversation being held at the door. I tried to sit up but my head fell back to the bed after I felt a sharp stinging pain in it. Caine rushed to where I was and assisted me. I hesitated for a while finally giving in. “Hi,” I muttered, leaning against the wall. He sat in the chair opposite me and pushed a table containing a steaming cup of tea. “Hi,” he returned, eyes away from me. “This would give you some energy,” he passed the cup to me. W
JASMINES POV “Where do we start from?” I asked Natalia, slowly walking to the glass while I maintained eye contact with her. “Trust,” she blurted, standing up and walking to the edge of the glass. I halted in front of her, a smile crawling up my lips. “Trust is the last thing you could ask for from me,” I replied, holding the gaze until he nodded with her hands going up in the air. “I’d understand. I mean who would want to trust me after going through that betrayal from her mother,” “She did it to keep me safe,” I defended my mom despite how it hurt me to know about all this. But I guess Natalia could see beneath my words of defense like she knew I was broken. “Did she? I mean…look at the damage she has caused you. She’s made you look weak…you’ve become a mockery…so much for someone who falls under…” “Answers,” I interrupted, holding back the tears in my eyes. The lock of the door clicked from outside, and I quickly took a glance at the key hanging in my trousers. Someone el
JASMINES POVThoughts. More thoughts. Extra thoughts. All night, that was all running through my mind. A brother? I scoffed, turning to the other side of the bed. That was when I realized the sun was out. I’d spent all night pondering on Natalia’s words. I wanted to come down from my bed and feed my thirst, but my body isn't encouraging. I needed rest, even if it was for an hour or two. I shut my eyes, hoping to sleep this time. And just when I thought I was drifting into sleep, a knock came on my door. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up on the bed. The door opened, it was Caine. “Long night?” He asked, walking into my room. I sighed, collapsing on my bed. “How’s Jerry?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. They were beginning to feel heavy with sleep, but with Caine in my room, I knew my day had just begun. “He’s recovering well. Just the…you know…” he said, helping himself to a chair opposite my bed. I sat back up, holding my banging head with both hands. “Cool,” I dragged. “I came t
CAINE’S POV“Get off her!” I raced past Jojo and Imani, almost knocking them down as I made my way to Jasmine and Isha. I pulled Isha off her and flung her to the feet of her brothers. “Keep your eyes on her!” I yelled at them. For a second, I thought I saw the disappointment in their eyes. They helped Isha up, holding her still despite her aggressive kicks to be set free and yolk her into the living room. “Are you okay?” I extended my hand to help her up. “Yeah,” she coughed, almost falling back on my shoulder. Lucy stepped in between us. “I’ll take her from here,” she said, pulling Jasmine away from me. We all went into the living room but were divided. Jojo and Lucy were with Jasmine, while Harper, Spencer, and Imani were with Isha. I could already sense trouble coming hard at us. “She killed them,” Isha cried, sobbing in the arms of her brothers. “We’ll deal with that later, Isha,” I tried to keep her calm, but that made her angrier. Her blood-red eyes shot angrily at me, sn
JASMINES POVI pressed my hand against my chest, leaning on the side of the wall as my mind spiraled out of control. Thoughts flew in like my mind was a passageway for them, causing my breath to come out ragged. A lot had happened in just what?—three days? And yet there was still someone downstairs calling me a murderer. How was I supposed to face all these while trying to focus on what wolf I would train? Not to speak of my father's deal with Natalia. I heaved a sigh, halted before my mirror, and ran my hands down my hair. The echoes of laughter and muffled sounds of music traveled into my room, it was a room party which I was informed about but declined. But I couldn’t stay in my room, not with all these thoughts running into my head. I needed a distraction, and the room party just seemed like it.With a little touch on my face and hair, I made my way to the room. Room 27. I knocked twice and the door flung open almost immediately, revealing an unfamiliar face. “I know you,” he
JASMINES POVI was too wasted to act. I just sat there, letting the chaos around me do its thing. My head fell to the chair, watching as the ceiling traveled in circles. I thought I saw some runes on them, calling into me with its blue glowing light. They looked pretty, and I extended my hands, wishing I could float in the air and know what they felt like. But the music in the room died down, cutting my solemn moment short.“Let’s go, Jasmine,” I heard Caines voice. He sounded muffled, and I couldn’t see his face. “You’re drunk, how much did you have to drink?” He asked, throwing my hand around his shoulder and grabbing me from the waist. I knew what was happening around me, but at the same time, I didn’t. For a second I thought I was levitating, but then whenever I looked at Caine, that hope was gone. I didn’t feel sad or anything, just…empty. For once., nothing bothered me. Caine led me out of the room, and to stop my eyes from hurting, I closed them and rested my head on his sh
JASMINE’S POV “Can I have a word with you?” I asked, stealing glances at Bryan who was looking out of the window. Caine was still answering a call at the garage while I pulled Lucy to a corner. “That’s him,” I blurted. “Him? What do you mean by him?” “My ex, Lucy, Bryan. That’s him,” I clarified. My heart raced, my blood boiling as I mistakenly looked into his eyes. He looked away immediately, and I knew that guilt was eating him up. “Your…ex? That Bryan?” “Yes, Lucy, that's Bryan,” I answered. “Okay, chill. He’s been my work partner for a while now. I never knew he was the Bryan you were talking about,” Lucy snapped. She noticed that wasn’t going to get me calm, so instead, she took my hands and pulled me closer to her. “Hey, nothing is going on between us, he’s just a colleague. I am with Caine, remember?” She asked. I didn’t want to give her a response, but the way she looked into my eyes demanded one. I nodded consecutively. “Yeah, yeah,” I breathed. “An
LUCY’S POV “Whatever this is, Luce, it’s not normal,” Bryan said, inching closer to me. I sighed, falling back on the wooden chair behind me. We stood for almost ten minutes, waiting for Adrian to finish up with his meal. When he was finally done, he crept out from the darkness, the red eyes still glowing as he made himself visible. I felt tears brewing in my eyes as I stood up and tossed a jacket to him. “Put these on”. “How long has he been this way,” Bryan asked, helping me with the empty blood bags. “A month, two or three weeks. I can’t really tell. All I know is that there was something wrong with him the last time I went home,” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” Adrian interrupted, walking out of the darkness completely. He exhaled, slowly opening his eyes. The red was gone, likewise the rage. “Dad did something new, and for the first time it worked,” “For the first time?” I asked, trying to process what he meant. “Have there been other trials, Adrian?” “Yeah…they all
LUCY'S POVMy heart skipped a beat as the bag fell from my shoulder, the blood bags which I had stolen from the pack clinic sprawling on the floor. “Oh my God! Caine!” I exclaimed, trying to hide the guilt as I started linking them up with a rush. I tossed them into the bag, not paying attention to whatever he was saying.“Lucy, I asked a question!” He pulled my shoulder, sending me to the floor. I fell on my butt, wincing in pain. “Oh my…Luce, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to,”“Stay away from me,” I yelled, stopping him with an extended palm. I took my time on the floor, thinking of what lie to give to him so he wouldn’t go asking questions. “Lucy…I didn’t mean to hit you in that manner,” he apologized, taking further steps closer to me. I burst into tears, burying my head in my legs. That was the first excuse I could garner from my thoughts, just so I’d have enough time to think. “Don’t touch me, Caine,” I whimpered, sobbing into my palms. “You almost ruined it all. My efforts. My har
CAINES POV“You shouldn’t have moved the bodies,” Sheriff Sherwood returned to us, pocketing his gun.“We’re sorry, we just couldn’t stand and do nothing,” I replied. He gestured with his head for us to walk with him, and we didn’t stop until we were out of the crime scene, standing amid police vans and ambulances. I knew what he wanted to say just by looking at him. “Look, I’m sorry uncle, I just had to call in this favor. I understand you’ve helped us a lot of times, and my dad probably owes you for the countless favors you have rendered…”“Kid…”“Just…please. This is more like an outbreak than a crime scene. It’s…” I paused, staring at the bodies that were being moved. “It’s dark,” I completed. Uncle Sherwood, my father's younger brother, was the family’s stray child. He started by not meeting his wolf when he was younger, by hanging out in the human world, and always sneaking out of the house. According to my father, he got into more trouble than we could count. Especially with
