LUCY'S POV
The blindfold that was wrapped around my eye was slowly taken off, permitting the hot rays of light to hit my face. I groaned, adjusting as much as I could to get a better posture on the chair. “She’s awake. Call her,” the distant voice of a man said, his footsteps withdrawing further away from the room. My eyes fluttered, fighting to open. But it was too weak to take the light coming at it. “You slept for too long, little one,” a second voice, which I didn’t know was close to me, said. His phone noisily dialed a number and it rang twice before a familiar female voice answered it. “What?” “Your daughter is awake,” the man said. My mother? ***** The screeching of tires sent the man beside me hurrying toward the door, and I didn’t need to see her before I knew she was the one. The door burst open, my mother strutting in line the older bitchy me she was. She halted mid-way and took off her shades, disgust etched on her face. “Who amongst you tied my daughter to a chair?” She asked, but her question was received with silence. “I’ll ask again.., who amongst you…” “I did. Forgive me Mrs. Lorreto,” the huge man apologized, quickly taking off the ropes and binding me to the chair, I winced in pain as I brought my hand forward, my muscles aching at every joint. “What’s the meaning of this mum?” I asked her, taking my feet. The heels of her shoes struck hard against the concrete as she made her way to me, reminding me of how dreadful she was and still is. She and my father are the reasons why I left home. But I preferred my dad because he had that daughterly love in him, as for my mum, she loved her son, my elder brother. “You’ve grown taller,” she said with a hand resting on my jaw. “You’ve grown older,” I returned. My father used to call me a mirror of my mother, and I guess that’s what made me start standing up to her most times. A small smile crawled around her lips, and I forced mine too. We didn’t last long intensely staring at each other before she pulled me into a surprise hug. “Oh, how I’ve missed my little one!” She examined. But that was a huge lie. I could even feel the pretense laced in her voice. “Just say what you need,” I muttered with a little bit of struggle given how tight she was holding me. Her arms loosened around me and I slipped out of her cage. “Is this about the Creeks?” “Ohh…honey! Why would you…” “Stop the act Mother and speak,” I cut her short. Not just her, but her pretty act which she put up. Her smile faded, replaced with a dangerous look—one I’d hated to see on her all my years growing up in that house. “I knew it,” “You, your father, and I have a lot to discuss,” she tossed my black home coat at me and began heading back to the car. The cost was a way of reminding me where I came from, but I didn’t that—because their blood was already running through my veins, day and night. ****** My mother's car pulled up at the garage at speed. I spotted my elder brother standing by the door of the hotel. I usually called him the family’s chosen, because he was their favorite. I got down from the car, and the first thing that hit me was the aroma of something sweet coming from the house. My eyes fell on Adrian, who smiled at me with two nods. I chuckled, raced to him, and took his arms in a hug. “You’ve grown tall,” Adrian said, placing a kiss on my head. “Why’s everyone saying that? It’s just been a year since you all saw me,” I groaned, hitting his chest gently. “And you’ve grown fat,” I returned the tease to his desk. We were still in the middle of our laughter when I spotted my dad in the house. My blood ran cold, my laughter fading into a look of fear. Did I say I preferred my dad? Maybe on some days, but certainly not today. “Quick, I made dinner,” Adrian pulled me through the other side of the house, thereby dodging Dad. **** The dining table was silent for a full five minutes into dinner until my dad broke it. “I heard you’re dating the Creek boy,” he said with food in his mouth. I stole a glance at him, then at Adrian and my mother who wasn’t even looking away from her food. “Yes,” I answered. “That’s good to hear,” “Good to hear?” My mother sharply cut my dad's remark. I settled in, gathering my strength to witness the drama unfold. It was almost like a tradition or some kind of curse. Whatever. But dinner with the Lorretos wasn’t going to be called dinner without quarrels. “You think her dating the Creek boy isn’t good? Wait until she gets her hands on all that we couldn’t. Then I’ll remind you of how much you hate the idea,” my father returned. “That boy is just like his father! You never can tell what they are thinking. You might think you’re ahead of him, but he’s ten steps ahead, planning faster and acting faster than you think, while you stand beside him deceiving yourself that you are smart,” my mother shot at me. “Lucy isn’t you, Harriet,” my father said calmly, but I felt the heat of that. “That Morgan Creek was able to deceive or fool you doesn’t mean that would happen to our lovely daughter. She’s smart, just like her dad. But you…you were blinded by love,” my father sounded like he was having fun taunting my mum. The cutleries dropped from her hand, clattering on the plate as she turned to my father. Her eyes were bright blue, her canines growing out with a low menacing growl. But my dad didn’t flinch. “I’ll keep that away from the table if I were you,” he said, sipping his wine. “You two, that’s enough,” Adrian chirped in. I didn’t want him to, because I was enjoying it. But he insisted against my nudge. “We haven’t even asked Princess here if she’s doing great with the plan. How about we jump to conclusions after doing that,” I turned to him in shock. He sounded so reasonable, yet a lot like my parents. “You sound just like them,” I rolled my eyes, pushing away from the chair and tossing the napkin back to the table as I made my way for the door. “I have somewhere I must be at midnight. If you need anything, then call instead of kidnapping me,” I said nonchalantly. I opened the door to the exit only to bump into Adrain again. “What the hell!” I exclaimed, stealing a look back at the table. “I’m sorry princess, but you’re not leaving tonight,” he said. ******LUCY’S POV “What did you do to him?” I followed my father behind, throwing questions at him as he and my mother helped Adrian to his bed. He passed out in the front yard after undergoing a terrible shock. “Dad!” I yelled, trying to get his attention. But they were so focused on Adrain that I felt invincible. After successfully placing him in bed, they decided to give me an answer. “You have nothing to worry about. Adrian is fine,” “A wolf doesn’t move as fast as that,” I objected, refusing to let go of their trail. I followed them back to the dining room where they went to their meal which they abandoned to help Adrian. I checked the time, it was almost nine. “If you won’t give me answers then let me leave. The swearing-in begins at ten,” I protested. They paid deaf ears to me, quietly eating their food. The doors were locked, and the huge guys who captured me at the party were positioned at the front exits of the house. No doubt the back was guarded too. “Go to your room
CAINES POV “That’s too tight,” I told the guy who was getting me dressed. It wasn’t something I enjoyed but had to permit it because my father said it was protocol. He took off the first vest and replaced it with a better one. “Thank you,” I said, adjusting it. He left the room, leaving me all by myself staring at my reflection in the mirror. My father's words rang in my head, reminding me of how much he expected from me tonight. But before that, I needed to do something. I made my way to my father's room and went in after no one responded to my knock. It looked empty. And I began my search for it. “Caine?” My father's voice startled me from the door which I forgot to lock. “What are you doing in my room?” He turned on the lights and began walking towards me. “The…the programme for tonight. I was searching for the program for tonight,” I lied, studying his eyes to see if he bought it. He stared at me with doubt for a few seconds before proceeding towards his bed. “I t
JASMINES POV The room was quiet for a while, except for the spicy rustle of fabrics and the distant noise of the occasion coming from the Alphas’ house. I stood motionless, staring at the woman in the mirror whom I could barely recognize. Draped in a black sleek gown, its fabric clinging to my figure and cascading down my knees until they touched my ankles. Its simplicity was unique, its sleeveless design leaving my shoulders and collarbone exposed and glowing under the sheen of carefully applied oil. “You look…exquisite,” the lady who was getting me dressed for the occasion said, forcing a smile to play around my lips. “Thank you,” I said, waiting for her to leave my side before I moved out of the chair to take in the full beauty. How could I look this way and let them bully me all my years in high school? My red hair stood out, perfectly oiled and aligned to fall my shoulders in a curl. “Has he arrived?” I asked the lady. But she shook her head in negation. “I’ll go co
JASMINES POV I sat in that crowd for almost two hours pondering on Caine’s words. It sounded like an invitation to treat, one which could lead me into trouble. But it was a nice offer, yet one I could not accept because he was dating my best friend. After hours of sitting and watching, my babe was finally called. I climbed the stage, the spotlight on me as Alpha Morgan gave the second microphone to me. He asked me questions that I had seen In the leaflet which Caine gave me. We were six questions down, the crowd cheering with every correct answer I had until the last. “Every pack needs a new leader the old one is gone. Who amongst my sons do you think has that in him?” I truer to understand the nature of the question as the silence in the hall grew. It sounded tricky, but we all knew the answer. “Caine,” “And why?” He threw a second question, staring at me closely. “He…urm. He’s strong, carries everyone along, protective, and…” “And not because you love him?” Alpha Morga
JASMINES POV We were racing towards the room where the rest were. Luckily, Lucy’s aunt was there before us. She’d already done what she could to revive Lucy and now she was breathing properly. “Mrs Elena,” I called, letting her pull me into a hug. “How’s she?” I asked. “You worry so much, kid. Lucy will be fine. I’ve written a list of drugs you should get her by morning. She has refused to come home for months. So when she wakes, do send my regards,” Mrs Elena said before leaving. What did she mean Lucy had refused to come home for months? The last time we made inquiries about her she said she was helping her aunt out. I waved it aside, joining my best friend on the bed. Her skin was pale, the blood on her torso staining the bandage which was carefully wrapped around it. “We should get some rest,” Caine broke the silence. “Not to worry, I’m good here,” I said without looking. They left me alone with her, and I slid myself under her duvet, wrapping my arms around her as I dr
JASMINES POV “Kiss him! Kiss him! Kiss him!” Up went the roar of the crowd. But I’d rather kiss a pig than Bryan. That lying ass cheat of a boy. “Jasmine…how are you?” Bryan asked, his gaze still fixed on mine. “I should be asking you the same question,” I returned, stealing a glance at the crowd who were now booing us. I didn’t like to be booed. Hell, I was too pretty for that now. “I came here to…” Bryan paused, shaking his head with a soft chuckle. “How funny. Is this fate's way of joining our paths again? Cos if it is then I sure ain’t ready for that,” “It’s a curse, rather. And neither am I ready to walk around with a curse again,” I fired. By now, the booing from the crowd had grown insane. Some of them were even throwing stuff at us. “Just kiss me and get this over this,” I said, attempting to blindfold myself again. But he stopped me with laughter which sounded like he was mocking me. “What ?” “You think I would do that?” “And you think they would let us get d
JASMINES POVI struggled against the grip around my neck, gasping for air as I was dragged into the cold night. My feet and knees scraped against the rocks, my mind racing to make sense of what was happening. “Let go of me!” I tried to scream, clawing at the arm that was holding me. When we stopped, I was slammed into a tree, a sharp stinging pain coursing through my back as I tried to get myself up. My captor finally stepped into the dim light of the moon and my breath hitched. “Bryan?” I spat his name, massaging my throat as I fought myself up. “You think you could humiliate me before everyone and get away with it?” He sneered, reaching for his pocket. Before I could speak, his hands were on my neck again, pressing me hard against the tree. “What do you want, Bryan?” I asked, forcing my voice to sound braver than I felt. A smirk curled his lips, his hand traveling to my forehead with the knife as he leaned in. “You, Jas. I want you to remember who’s in control here. Who’s alwa
JASMINES POV “Stay close to me,” Caine said, his voice low and urgent. My legs trembled at the sight of the lifeless bodies scattered like broken dolls on the floor. The cold suddenly seeped into my skin, making my blood freeze and almost making me halt. Caine’s hand found mine and squeezed it into his, and I could feel the temperature of his body rising with every step we took further. “What happened here?” I muttered, scanning the bodies by the left. My mind was blurred with questions. Could Bryan have done this? No…one person couldn’t wreak such havoc. So what or who was it then? “This is no wild animal,” Caine said like he was answering my thoughts. Something about the scene was off. I could smell it, and I bet Caine could too given the way he was sniffing the air. “This isn’t just blood or death…it’s something unnatural. Something new, dangerous,” he said. “Which means we should leave and probably report it to your dad,” I suggested, beginning to feel the dread of the m
JASMINE’S POV “Can I have a word with you?” I asked, stealing glances at Bryan who was looking out of the window. Caine was still answering a call at the garage while I pulled Lucy to a corner. “That’s him,” I blurted. “Him? What do you mean by him?” “My ex, Lucy, Bryan. That’s him,” I clarified. My heart raced, my blood boiling as I mistakenly looked into his eyes. He looked away immediately, and I knew that guilt was eating him up. “Your…ex? That Bryan?” “Yes, Lucy, that's Bryan,” I answered. “Okay, chill. He’s been my work partner for a while now. I never knew he was the Bryan you were talking about,” Lucy snapped. She noticed that wasn’t going to get me calm, so instead, she took my hands and pulled me closer to her. “Hey, nothing is going on between us, he’s just a colleague. I am with Caine, remember?” She asked. I didn’t want to give her a response, but the way she looked into my eyes demanded one. I nodded consecutively. “Yeah, yeah,” I breathed. “An
LUCY’S POV “Whatever this is, Luce, it’s not normal,” Bryan said, inching closer to me. I sighed, falling back on the wooden chair behind me. We stood for almost ten minutes, waiting for Adrian to finish up with his meal. When he was finally done, he crept out from the darkness, the red eyes still glowing as he made himself visible. I felt tears brewing in my eyes as I stood up and tossed a jacket to him. “Put these on”. “How long has he been this way,” Bryan asked, helping me with the empty blood bags. “A month, two or three weeks. I can’t really tell. All I know is that there was something wrong with him the last time I went home,” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” Adrian interrupted, walking out of the darkness completely. He exhaled, slowly opening his eyes. The red was gone, likewise the rage. “Dad did something new, and for the first time it worked,” “For the first time?” I asked, trying to process what he meant. “Have there been other trials, Adrian?” “Yeah…they all
LUCY'S POVMy heart skipped a beat as the bag fell from my shoulder, the blood bags which I had stolen from the pack clinic sprawling on the floor. “Oh my God! Caine!” I exclaimed, trying to hide the guilt as I started linking them up with a rush. I tossed them into the bag, not paying attention to whatever he was saying.“Lucy, I asked a question!” He pulled my shoulder, sending me to the floor. I fell on my butt, wincing in pain. “Oh my…Luce, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to,”“Stay away from me,” I yelled, stopping him with an extended palm. I took my time on the floor, thinking of what lie to give to him so he wouldn’t go asking questions. “Lucy…I didn’t mean to hit you in that manner,” he apologized, taking further steps closer to me. I burst into tears, burying my head in my legs. That was the first excuse I could garner from my thoughts, just so I’d have enough time to think. “Don’t touch me, Caine,” I whimpered, sobbing into my palms. “You almost ruined it all. My efforts. My har
CAINES POV“You shouldn’t have moved the bodies,” Sheriff Sherwood returned to us, pocketing his gun.“We’re sorry, we just couldn’t stand and do nothing,” I replied. He gestured with his head for us to walk with him, and we didn’t stop until we were out of the crime scene, standing amid police vans and ambulances. I knew what he wanted to say just by looking at him. “Look, I’m sorry uncle, I just had to call in this favor. I understand you’ve helped us a lot of times, and my dad probably owes you for the countless favors you have rendered…”“Kid…”“Just…please. This is more like an outbreak than a crime scene. It’s…” I paused, staring at the bodies that were being moved. “It’s dark,” I completed. Uncle Sherwood, my father's younger brother, was the family’s stray child. He started by not meeting his wolf when he was younger, by hanging out in the human world, and always sneaking out of the house. According to my father, he got into more trouble than we could count. Especially with
JASMINES POVI was too wasted to act. I just sat there, letting the chaos around me do its thing. My head fell to the chair, watching as the ceiling traveled in circles. I thought I saw some runes on them, calling into me with its blue glowing light. They looked pretty, and I extended my hands, wishing I could float in the air and know what they felt like. But the music in the room died down, cutting my solemn moment short.“Let’s go, Jasmine,” I heard Caines voice. He sounded muffled, and I couldn’t see his face. “You’re drunk, how much did you have to drink?” He asked, throwing my hand around his shoulder and grabbing me from the waist. I knew what was happening around me, but at the same time, I didn’t. For a second I thought I was levitating, but then whenever I looked at Caine, that hope was gone. I didn’t feel sad or anything, just…empty. For once., nothing bothered me. Caine led me out of the room, and to stop my eyes from hurting, I closed them and rested my head on his sh
JASMINES POVI pressed my hand against my chest, leaning on the side of the wall as my mind spiraled out of control. Thoughts flew in like my mind was a passageway for them, causing my breath to come out ragged. A lot had happened in just what?—three days? And yet there was still someone downstairs calling me a murderer. How was I supposed to face all these while trying to focus on what wolf I would train? Not to speak of my father's deal with Natalia. I heaved a sigh, halted before my mirror, and ran my hands down my hair. The echoes of laughter and muffled sounds of music traveled into my room, it was a room party which I was informed about but declined. But I couldn’t stay in my room, not with all these thoughts running into my head. I needed a distraction, and the room party just seemed like it.With a little touch on my face and hair, I made my way to the room. Room 27. I knocked twice and the door flung open almost immediately, revealing an unfamiliar face. “I know you,” he
CAINE’S POV“Get off her!” I raced past Jojo and Imani, almost knocking them down as I made my way to Jasmine and Isha. I pulled Isha off her and flung her to the feet of her brothers. “Keep your eyes on her!” I yelled at them. For a second, I thought I saw the disappointment in their eyes. They helped Isha up, holding her still despite her aggressive kicks to be set free and yolk her into the living room. “Are you okay?” I extended my hand to help her up. “Yeah,” she coughed, almost falling back on my shoulder. Lucy stepped in between us. “I’ll take her from here,” she said, pulling Jasmine away from me. We all went into the living room but were divided. Jojo and Lucy were with Jasmine, while Harper, Spencer, and Imani were with Isha. I could already sense trouble coming hard at us. “She killed them,” Isha cried, sobbing in the arms of her brothers. “We’ll deal with that later, Isha,” I tried to keep her calm, but that made her angrier. Her blood-red eyes shot angrily at me, sn
JASMINES POVThoughts. More thoughts. Extra thoughts. All night, that was all running through my mind. A brother? I scoffed, turning to the other side of the bed. That was when I realized the sun was out. I’d spent all night pondering on Natalia’s words. I wanted to come down from my bed and feed my thirst, but my body isn't encouraging. I needed rest, even if it was for an hour or two. I shut my eyes, hoping to sleep this time. And just when I thought I was drifting into sleep, a knock came on my door. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up on the bed. The door opened, it was Caine. “Long night?” He asked, walking into my room. I sighed, collapsing on my bed. “How’s Jerry?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. They were beginning to feel heavy with sleep, but with Caine in my room, I knew my day had just begun. “He’s recovering well. Just the…you know…” he said, helping himself to a chair opposite my bed. I sat back up, holding my banging head with both hands. “Cool,” I dragged. “I came t
JASMINES POV “Where do we start from?” I asked Natalia, slowly walking to the glass while I maintained eye contact with her. “Trust,” she blurted, standing up and walking to the edge of the glass. I halted in front of her, a smile crawling up my lips. “Trust is the last thing you could ask for from me,” I replied, holding the gaze until he nodded with her hands going up in the air. “I’d understand. I mean who would want to trust me after going through that betrayal from her mother,” “She did it to keep me safe,” I defended my mom despite how it hurt me to know about all this. But I guess Natalia could see beneath my words of defense like she knew I was broken. “Did she? I mean…look at the damage she has caused you. She’s made you look weak…you’ve become a mockery…so much for someone who falls under…” “Answers,” I interrupted, holding back the tears in my eyes. The lock of the door clicked from outside, and I quickly took a glance at the key hanging in my trousers. Someone el
