JASMINES POV

“Stay close to me,” Caine said, his voice low and urgent. My legs trembled at the sight of the lifeless bodies scattered like broken dolls on the floor. The cold suddenly seeped into my skin, making my blood freeze and almost making me halt.

Caine’s hand found mine and squeezed it into his, and I could feel the temperature of his body rising with every step we took further.

“What happened here?” I muttered, scanning the bodies by the left. My mind was blurred with questions. Could Bryan have done this?

No…one person couldn’t wreak such havoc. So what or who was it then?

“This is no wild animal,” Caine said like he was answering my thoughts. Something about the scene was off. I could smell it, and I bet Caine could too given the way he was sniffing the air.

“This isn’t just blood or death…it’s something unnatural. Something new, dangerous,” he said.

“Which means we should leave and probably report it to your dad,” I suggested, beginning to feel the dread of the m

CAINES POV “Tomorrow, don’t be late,” I almost choked on my pretense the moment I heard my girlfriend's voice. “Lucy,” I called her, shifting my gaze from Jasmine with what I hoped was a neutral expression. She was standing at the end of the corridor, hands colder with a brow corked. “I’m sorry, am I interrupting something?” “Lucy,” Jasmine chirped in before I could give a response. She hurried past me and pulled her into a hug. “You got us worried. Are you feeling good now?” She asked, pulling away and scanning Lucy’s body. The smile that played around Lucy’s lip looked fake, forced. But dge managed to maintain it until she was done talking with Jasmine. “You look exhausted. Has Caine been stressing you,” she glanced at me. “No, Caine and I only had a hectic day. We urm.,,we saw…” “Jasmine,” I had to cut her short. We weren’t supposed to talk about it until we were sure of what we were dealing with. “Head to your room, I’ll like a word with Lucy,” I ordered, forcing the me

JASMINES POV That was one step up. Putting Bryan at the center would certainly bring him out of his hiding, and I’ll get my revenge on him. His act last night still lived fresh in my memory, taunting every part of my body. Caine drove me silently back to town. He went down the lane leading to Mrs. Maria’s diner, where I was supposed to work. “Are you sure nothing happened between you and Bryan last night that i should know about?” Caine snapped me out of thoughts as he parked in front of the diner. “Nothing happened. He just happened not to be at the scene when it happened. So there’s every that he’s behind it,” “And you…what were you doing in the woods that late?” He asked. I sighed, turning to look at him. “You can’t know everything, Caine,” “But I want to know if I can trust you,” he said. I hesitated, staring into his eyes and realizing how genuine he was. That wasn’t enough to make me share the events of the previous night. “Trust is earned, not negotiated,” I re

CAINES POV “What script?” Jasmine asked. My heart sank into my stomach, my mind racing with thoughts of what answer I should give. I have never been in a situation where I had to cook up some lie to save my ass. With Jasmine’s gaze, it only got more difficult. “It’s nothing,” I said after much difficulty, forcing a smile. “They’re just trying to stir a drama. Don’t give them that,” I whispered. But Jasmine wasn’t buying that shit. Her narrowed eyes and crossed arms told me she wasn’t letting it slide any time soon. “Drama?” She blurted. I rolled my eyes and pulled her away from the table after taking their orders. I didn’t stop until we were behind the counter. “What happened to revenge?” “What happened to the script you’re supposed to play?” She fired. I exchanged glances with my friends who were sitting at the table, watching us. “Are they in on something involving us?” “You’re overthinking this. Have you suddenly forgotten the people you are dealing with?” I tried to shift t

My heart pounded in my chest, but I forced myself to meet the gaze of the brown-haired lady. “Listen…you’ve got the wrong people,” I started, my voice calm despite the storm brewing in me. “We are just workers at the diner…” “Quit the lies or I’ll blow your eyes off,” she fired, her fingers twitching on the trigger. My hands returned to the air, trembling as my mind raced to figure out what else to say, “Save those lies,” she snapped, taking careful steps forward. “You think it’s my first time dealing with wolves? I know what you are I know what you do! The fake lives. The lies, the masks you wear to blend in,” she paused, her eyes flicking from me to Caine, then back to me. Caine shifted to my front, holding my other hand behind him. “You don’t want to do this,” he said, his voice low but firm. “Killing the wrong people won’t bring those you’ve lost,” “But it will give me peace!” She snapped, and I sa

JASMINES POV “What do you mean, lied?” I asked, finding it difficult to process the words my dad just said. “Dad,” “Sweetie…I’ve been trying to wrap my head around it all this while. It just doesn’t make any sense to me,” he added. But that wasn’t what I wanted to hear. My mother, not human? How were they expecting me to believe that a woman who raised me and whom I lived with for years wasn’t human? “Alpha?” “Your dad and I are still doing research, Jasmine. However, I have a question for you,” he said, sitting up in his chair. I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat and stole a glance at Caine who was standing outside the door. “Where were you the night of the massacre?” He asked. He interrupted my attempt to speak. “Now before you fill me in on how you were with my son all day, we all know that part of the story. What I want to know now, is where you were in the night of the massacre,” he added. I furrowed my brows, trying to get a hold of my thoughts which were

JASMINES POV “Get off me!” I yelled, struggling with the hands that were trying to hold me down. She was too strong for a lady of her size. I kicked several times, throwing failed jabs at her as she held me to the bed. “Tell me!” She growled, placing the gun on my head. But I guess that wasn’t enough to keep me still. To my surprise, even with the nose of a gun placed on my forehead, I didn’t back down. “Let me go! You’re going to get arrested for this!” I growled, yelling in her palm which covered my mouth. She dragged me by the hair and threw me to the floor. Without giving me a chance to get myself, she kicked my torso and dragged my legs. “One last chance, girl!” She growled, pointing the gun at me. My heart was in a race, my sweat mixed with my tears and they streamed down my face. “I’m…I’m the wrong person. You have the…the wrong person,” I said amid my rugged breath, clutching my stomach which hit the iron frame of my bed. My blood dripped from my nose, sending an alar

To be locked up like you’re some kind of…slave…” he started. I looked away from his eyes, focusing my gaze on the door which he left slightly open. “Jasmine…” “Leave…” “Look…I’m sorry about what I said earlier, okay?” He apologized. “I didn’t mean to. I was tensed and scared and anxious…it was the first time my dad had me…” “Caine…I don’t want you here. JASMINES POV The police sirens blared, disturbing the peace of the night. Caine and I took another path different from that which we used to come up the mountain. The base was already surrounded by the police and wolf guards, waiting for a command to engage. “Hurry, this way,” Caine called, pulling my hands towards another path. We ducked under the branches and raced through the foliage, the distant shouts and blaring of the sirens drawing closer. My heart hammered in my heart as adrenaline coursed through my nerves, pushing every muscle in me to run faster. Caine glanced over the trees above us, pausing for a second as we took a scan of the environment around us. “Do you even know where we are going?” I asked, hyperventilating as I grabbed my knees. “We’ll lose them if we can make it to the stream. There’s a tunnel at the bank which leads directly into the pack house. I could sneak you into a car and drive you back to my father's house,” Caine said, withdrawing from where he

JASMINES POVI stood before the mirror, staring at my reflection. Time had passed since the last servant came to inform us that the car was waiting. I’d completely lost myself in my reflection. The woman staring back at me was different. Someone I’d long admired to be. I let out a sigh, taking the veil off my face. “Are we ready?” I asked Alyssa who was still gathering a few things from her bag. “Yes…just these little things I have to get them we’ll move,’ he said.I didn’t mind, because I felt like I had all the time in the world. I was willing to stand before the mirror, simply staring at myself and the baby bump that was evident from the white gown I had on. Two knocks landed on the door, and it creaked open. From the mirror, I saw my mother. “Mum,” I called under my breath. She told me that she wasn’t going to make it because she was still taking care of her husband. Seeing her here sent chills down my spine. I strode hurriedly across the room, but she covered more space tha

JASMINES POVI walked into the cemetery where Lucy’s body was buried. Carrying my flowers in one hand and holding Caine in the other. It was a month after her death, and as much as I tried to deny it, I could feel the void in my heart. She occupied somewhere in my heart, despite the betrayal and hatred, and I just couldn’t bring myself to deny that fact. Caine wasn’t in support of my going to visit the cemetery, but I insisted. I had to remind him of Lucy’s parents whom they locked up and weren’t able to pay their daughter a visit at her grave, nor did they have a chance to see them lower her into the ground. She was a villain, yes—but also a human being. “I’ll wait out here,” Caine said. I didn’t argue. We disconnected our hands, and he kissed me before letting me off. Caine was still a work in progress. He was taking on a new personality, one that was completely in contrast to who he was before the accident. His memories were not completely back, but each day, with my presenc

CAINES POVThe next time I woke up, I couldn’t move my hands or legs. I scanned the room area after getting a clearer vision. The smell of wolf’s bane was strong in the air, and that explained why I felt weak. “You’re finally up, welcome to the party,” Lucy drew my attention to her. She was crouched beside Jasmine, and something about that position upset my wolf. He wanted to defend Jasmine, to stand up for her. But our strength was sealed. “Get away from her. Who are you?” I gritted.“It’s so sad that it had to be your memory that was lost. A part of me wished you died that night,” she blurted. “What?” I asked. Then I understood what she was talking about. My accident. “That girl…Elara right?” She chuckled. “She was this close to figuring out. If only she’d been smart,”I groaned, pulling against my restraints. “You killed her!” I yelled. But only a sinister smile played on her face as she moved from Jasmine to me. “You can’t do anything, Caine, not even now. You couldn’t even

The connection had been lost.Jasmine’s voice still rang in my head, breathless and desperate.I’m pregnant—with your child.I shot up from my chair so fast it clattered against the floor. My wolf was raging beneath my skin, demanding action, demanding I find her.Just then, a car drove in. I moved to the window to see who it was. Lucy. My eyes drifted to the clock, and it was a few minutes past twelve. The sky was completely dark, and the moon was hanging with a moonlight under the cloud. “She sounded scared…and urgent…” I thought. All of a sudden, my wolf was full of rage. The fragment of memory that I had tried to remember felt like it was fighting its way up. But distractions. Lucy was coming up, and I had to confirm my suspicions. I reached for my phone and sent a text to Beta Joseph, telling him to track my phone and find me if anything happened. I sent the same

JASMINE’S POVThe moment the door shut behind them, I let out a shaky breath, my body sagging against the chair. My arms ached from the restraints, my head pounding from exhaustion, but none of it compared to the sharp pain radiating through my stomach. The warmth of my blood soaked into my dress was a terrifying reminder of just how much danger I was in.I glanced at the table where Lucy had tossed her phone. It was my only chance. My eyes drifted back to the door after I heard a sound. I thought they were coming back, so I curled back into my tears. After a few seconds of waiting, and no one came through the door, I let out a heavy sigh, staring at the phone. Desperation fueled me as I forced my body forward. I fell from the chair and crashed my face on the floor. Shock coursed through my face, sending my head and my brain pulsing with the taste of blood that circulated in my mouth. I ignored the pain, keeping my eyes focused on the phone that lay on the table. I started crawlin

LUCY'S POVI slammed the brakes, drifting the car out of the garage. I saw Caine standing at the edge of the hallway through the rear mirror. His gaze was fixed on the car, his body still as I drove off. I knew he was getting suspicious, and it was only a matter of time before he came searching or digging for answers. I drove into the silence that filled the night, a clear contrast to the storm of thoughts that raged in my mind. I’d asked for dinner with them because I started noticing the low murmuring when I wasn’t looking. They were getting suspicious, questioning my whereabouts and my lateness to the events and important meetings. I also noticed how distant I had become due to the plans Bryan had and the hitches we experienced over the month. Recently, a few days back or so, Adrian went on a hunting spree, killing tons of humans and werewolves. According to my parents, he was facing the likelihood of the breakout of another disease all because he hadn’t found someone who was

CAINE’S POVThe silence that filled the room was suffocating. The way all eyes drifted to me, I knew I shouldn’t have uttered those words. I took a little drift away from Lucy’s stare, traveling my eyes around the room. The eyes of others carried a heavy weight, like a secret, lurking behind them. I made sure I observed all before returning my gaze to Lucy. Unlike others, and unlike the first time the question was asked, she was smiling. What changed?Wasn’t she curious to know what changed?”“Go on, Caine. Why don’t you tell us? Are we supposed to be expecting someone else,” she asked again. The rest returned to their meal, the forks clanging softly against their plates. Even their eyes were buried into their plates, and it felt like they were expecting some kind of outburst of something—a quarrel perhaps. “Are you okay mate?” Harper nudged me, Snapping me out of my zone. I forced a smile, nodding hurriedly.“Of course. I just didn’t spot Joanne in time. My sight I guess.” lie

JASMINES POVThe light shuffling of feet and the muffled voices stirred me up from my sleep. Standing at the edge of the room Bryan, talking with Adrian. They were discussing in lie tones, but Bryan seemed to be angrier. “You led them here!” He yelled, pushing Adrian. For reasons best known to Adrian, he wasn’t getting angry just like Bryan. He maintained his cool, taking the blows and the blame. “Deal with it,” Bryan snapped. “It’s already been dealt with,” Adrian said finally. My vision blurred for a few seconds, and I blinked several times to get a clearer view. Silence fell in the room after Adrain spoke, safe for Bryan’s heavy breathing. “You what?”“They’ve been dealt with. And Lucy drove off with their bodies to bury them somewhere far,” he explained. With the I saw things, Bryan wasn’t in support of that. He took two steps forward, and the third step placed him directly in front of Adrian.“You killed the cops?” My breath hitched after hearing what the offense was.

CAINES POVIt was the second month since the arrest of Lilian. My father has been silent on the progress being made by my uncle and the rest of the investigation team—that’s if progress was being made. On the other hand, Natasha has been nothing but helpful. For reasons best known to her, she only let me discuss things I’d planned for and my father eventually left. She stood in as my therapist. On the other hand, Lucy is awkwardly absent from the house. She leaves so early and comes back really late at night. When I asked, she attributed the return of her parents and her brother whom the police department was after. I walked out of bed, moved to the mirror, and ran my fingers through the bandage on my head. Two months had come, and gone, yet I still couldn’t get an answer to the most bothersome question in my mind. Why Jasmine?A few days ago, I asked my father. I wanted to know why she was the only name that kept recurring in my head. I noticed the way he tried to avoid the qu
