JASMINES POV

“Stay close to me,” Caine said, his voice low and urgent. My legs trembled at the sight of the lifeless bodies scattered like broken dolls on the floor. The cold suddenly seeped into my skin, making my blood freeze and almost making me halt.

Caine’s hand found mine and squeezed it into his, and I could feel the temperature of his body rising with every step we took further.

“What happened here?” I muttered, scanning the bodies by the left. My mind was blurred with questions. Could Bryan have done this?

No…one person couldn’t wreak such havoc. So what or who was it then?

“This is no wild animal,” Caine said like he was answering my thoughts. Something about the scene was off. I could smell it, and I bet Caine could too given the way he was sniffing the air.

“This isn’t just blood or death…it’s something unnatural. Something new, dangerous,” he said.

“Which means we should leave and probably report it to your dad,” I suggested, beginning to feel the dread of the moment penetrating the courage I had summoned earlier to the wall into the camp with Caine.

Caine crouched beside a body and examined it. “Ears bleeding. Eyes bulged. It’s like their insides exploded. Yet I don’t smell poison. This was caused by something else,”

“A wolf?” I chirped, beginning to freak out. I inched closer to Caine because he was the only person keeping me safe at the moment.

“I doubt. I mean…look at the ears,” he said, shifting the ears of a corpse. I attempted to join him when a low guttural growled into me. It came from the woods opposite us. Caine snapped to his feet, his claws shooting out instinctively.

Wolves.

Their red crimson eyes glowed from the shadow of the trees. From a pair, to two pairs until there were about a dozen of them.

“A full leader pack,” Caine muttered, taking steps back. I was behind him, moving back as well but maintaining a reasonable gap between us. I didn’t want a situation where I would be drafted away from him without him resisting.

One after the other, they stepped out, their furs matted in blood and their mouths foamed like a rabid beast.

The Seekers.

I recognized those eyes, their unique furs and their size from stories told to me by my mother.

“Caine, “ I whispered, measuring the distance between us and the car and calculating our chances of survival.

“Stay behind me,” Caine barked as he took a defensive stance. I wished he knew who they were. How could he not?

“Caine, we can’t. They’re the pack of Seekers,” I blurted, clinging onto his shirt. I noticed his defense drop instantly. His eyes scanned the wolves properly, and he finally understood.

“Jasmine…run!” He ordered.

We tore into a race, going faster than our legs could take us. Caine stayed behind, guarding me all the way down. The snarls and growls of the wolves were getting closer, sending my heart racing faster than my legs.

We got to the car and got in immediately. Before Caine could ignite the engine, we were surrounded.

“Oh..,fuck!” I exclaimed, getting all sweaty.

“Hold tight,” Caine helped with my seat belt before doing his. He started firing the engine of the car and I hoped he was about to do what I was thinking.

“Are you running into them?” I asked.

“Not me, Jasmine. We!” Caine answered , giving the accelerator a great kick which sent the car speeding toward the six wolves ahead of us. I shut my eyes, tightening my grip on the handle above my head as the car went diving through the air.

The next time I opened them, we were out of that environment, now speeding down the express.

“Why are the seekers in this part of town?” I asked, still trying to recover from the shock. Caine didn’t answer me immediately. He still looked buzzed from the whole thing, his left hand running through his wet hair.

“There is only one way to find out,”

****

“Dad,” I hugged my father after getting down from the car. Caine believes my father should have answers because the last time the Seekers surfaced was twenty-two years ago, and as at then, my dad was in charge of the pack library, research and investigation.

“Jasmine. I’m not supposed to be seeing you until two weeks from now. What’s happening?” My dad asked amidst his excitement after seeing me. We exchanged kisses on the cheek before I helped myself to the kitchen.

“Caine wants to talk with you,” I said as I trailed off. Caine walked in and was offered a seat by my father. I wanted to leave the discussion to them, but the more I stayed alone, the more thoughts of Bryan hurled into my head.

I left the kitchen and returned to the sitting room where they were.

“The Seekers don’t just show up for no reason. Someone or something must have dragged them out of their place,” my dad said, dropping a green dusty book which he pulled from a shelf opposite the room.

“Could it be the massacre?” Caine asked, taking the book and blowing off the dust. He opened it and got choked by the dust inside.

“No, not the massacre, but what caused the massacre. It’s an old book. Contains years and events that brought the Seekers pack out of their hiding. You can take your time, go through it. Or my daughter could help,”

“No, thank you,” Caine and I chorused. We exchanged glances like we weren’t just the people who kissed each other before a large number of persons—-who are now corpses.

“When you find the cause of the massacre, you’ll find what the seekers are here for. The earlier you do it, the better. If you believe the wolves you saw last night are actually the seekers, then we are about to face worse than we already have,” my dad sounded more serious than ever.

I swallowed the horror brewing in me and stood up. “Thanks dad. That should be all for now,” I dismissed the meeting. He walked us to the car, and before I went in, he grabbed my arm and whispered.

“Go nowhere alone, Jasmine. The seekers have seen you, they’ll be on your tail. Caine too,” he said.

I wanted him to explain what he meant, but Caine honked the horn, sending me into the car. We drove back to the pack house, buzzing with life unlike the rest of the realm.

“Jas,” Caine called, halting me. “So…urm…the kiss,”

“Yeah, I know. It never happened. Good night Caine,” I turned to keep heading to my room, but he grabbed my arm and pulled me back.

“No…not that,” he said, his eyes searching mine for the slightest clue of what he was about to do. Still I had no idea. “Maybe that happened off…”

“Caine, it’s late, and I’ve had a hectic day. If you don’t mind I would love to…” he interrupted me with his lips which crashed softly on mine. I froze, holding my breath in awe. That was two kisses from him in a day.

I wanted to pull him away, but my wolf wanted more of him, more than just a kiss. So I let him go further until I had a flash of my encounter with Bryan. Just as I was about to take him off, a voice did it for me.

“Jasmine?” Lucy called, walking into the corridor.

He went down the lane leading to Mrs. Maria’s diner, where I was supposed to work. “Are you sure nothing happened between you and Bryan last night that i should know about?” Caine snapped me out of thoughts as he parked in front of the diner. “Nothing happened. With Jasmine’s gaze, it only got more difficult. “It’s nothing,” I said after much difficulty, forcing a smile. “They’re just trying to stir a drama. Don’t give them that,” I whispered. But Jasmine wasn’t buying that shit. Her narrowed eyes and crossed arms told me she wasn’t letting it slide any time soon. “Drama?” She blurted. I rolled my eyes and pulled her away from the table after taking their orders. I didn’t stop until we were behind the counter. “What happened to revenge?” “What happened to the script you’re supposed to play?” She fired. I exchanged glances with my friends who were sitting at the table, watching us. “Are they in on something involving us?” “You’re overthinking this. My hands returned to the air, trembling as my mind raced to figure out what else to say, “Save those lies,” she snapped, taking careful steps forward. “You think it’s my first time dealing with wolves? I know what you are I know what you do! The fake lives. The lies, the masks you wear to blend in,” she paused, her eyes flicking from me to Caine, then back to me. Caine shifted to my front, holding my other hand behind him. “You don’t want to do this,” he said, his voice low but firm. “Killing the wrong people won’t bring those you’ve lost,” “But it will give me peace!” She snapped, and I sa

It just doesn’t make any sense to me,” he added. But that wasn’t what I wanted to hear. My mother, not human? How were they expecting me to believe that a woman who raised me and whom I lived with for years wasn’t human? “Alpha?” “Your dad and I are still doing research, Jasmine. However, I have a question for you,” he said, sitting up in his chair. I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat and stole a glance at Caine who was standing outside the door. “Where were you the night of the massacre?” He asked. He interrupted my attempt to speak. “Now before you fill me in on how you were with my son all day, we all know that part of the story. What I want to know now, is where you were in the night of the massacre,” he added. I furrowed my brows, trying to get a hold of my thoughts which were

The base was already surrounded by the police and wolf guards, waiting for a command to engage. “Hurry, this way,” Caine called, pulling my hands towards another path. We ducked under the branches and raced through the foliage, the distant shouts and blaring of the sirens drawing closer. My heart hammered in my heart as adrenaline coursed through my nerves, pushing every muscle in me to run faster. Caine glanced over the trees above us, pausing for a second as we took a scan of the environment around us. “Do you even know where we are going?” I asked, hyperventilating as I grabbed my knees. “We’ll lose them if we can make it to the stream. There’s a tunnel at the bank which leads directly into the pack house. I could sneak you into a car and drive you back to my father's house,” Caine said, withdrawing from where he

Caine was still answering a call at the garage while I pulled Lucy to a corner. “That’s him,” I blurted. “Him? What do you mean by him?” “My ex, Lucy, Bryan. That’s him,” I clarified. My heart raced, my blood boiling as I mistakenly looked into his eyes. He looked away immediately, and I knew that guilt was eating him up. “Your…ex? That Bryan?” “Yes, Lucy, that's Bryan,” I answered. “Okay, chill. He’s been my work partner for a while now. I never knew he was the Bryan you were talking about,” Lucy snapped. She noticed that wasn’t going to get me calm, so instead, she took my hands and pulled me closer to her. “Hey, nothing is going on between us, he’s just a colleague. I am with Caine, remember?” She asked. I didn’t want to give her a response, but the way she looked into my eyes demanded one. I nodded consecutively. “Yeah, yeah,” I breathed. “An

We stood for almost ten minutes, waiting for Adrian to finish up with his meal. When he was finally done, he crept out from the darkness, the red eyes still glowing as he made himself visible. I felt tears brewing in my eyes as I stood up and tossed a jacket to him. “Put these on”. “How long has he been this way,” Bryan asked, helping me with the empty blood bags. “A month, two or three weeks. I can’t really tell. All I know is that there was something wrong with him the last time I went home,” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” Adrian interrupted, walking out of the darkness completely. He exhaled, slowly opening his eyes. The red was gone, likewise the rage. “Dad did something new, and for the first time it worked,” “For the first time?” I asked, trying to process what he meant. “Have there been other trials, Adrian?” “Yeah…they all

I fell on my butt, wincing in pain. “Oh my…Luce, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to,”“Stay away from me,” I yelled, stopping him with an extended palm. I took my time on the floor, thinking of what lie to give to him so he wouldn’t go asking questions. “Lucy…I didn’t mean to hit you in that manner,” he apologized, taking further steps closer to me. I burst into tears, burying my head in my legs. That was the first excuse I could garner from my thoughts, just so I’d have enough time to think. “Don’t touch me, Caine,” I whimpered, sobbing into my palms. “You almost ruined it all. My efforts. CAINES POV“You shouldn’t have moved the bodies,” Sheriff Sherwood returned to us, pocketing his gun.“We’re sorry, we just couldn’t stand and do nothing,” I replied. He gestured with his head for us to walk with him, and we didn’t stop until we were out of the crime scene, standing amid police vans and ambulances. I knew what he wanted to say just by looking at him. “Look, I’m sorry uncle, I just had to call in this favor. I understand you’ve helped us a lot of times, and my dad probably owes you for the countless favors you have rendered…”“Kid…”“Just…please. This is more like an outbreak than a crime scene. It’s…” I paused, staring at the bodies that were being moved. “It’s dark,” I completed. Uncle Sherwood, my father's younger brother, was the family’s stray child. He started by not meeting his wolf when he was younger, by hanging out in the human world, and always sneaking out of the house. According to my father, he got into more trouble than we could count. I thought I saw some runes on them, calling into me with its blue glowing light. They looked pretty, and I extended my hands, wishing I could float in the air and know what they felt like. But the music in the room died down, cutting my solemn moment short.“Let’s go, Jasmine,” I heard Caines voice. He sounded muffled, and I couldn’t see his face. “You’re drunk, how much did you have to drink?” He asked, throwing my hand around his shoulder and grabbing me from the waist. I knew what was happening around me, but at the same time, I didn’t. For a second I thought I was levitating, but then whenever I looked at Caine, that hope was gone. JASMINES POVI pressed my hand against my chest, leaning on the side of the wall as my mind spiraled out of control. Thoughts flew in like my mind was a passageway for them, causing my breath to come out ragged. A lot had happened in just what?—three days? And yet there was still someone downstairs calling me a murderer. How was I supposed to face all these while trying to focus on what wolf I would train? Not to speak of my father's deal with Natalia. I heaved a sigh, halted before my mirror, and ran my hands down my hair. The echoes of laughter and muffled sounds of music traveled into my room, it was a room party which I was informed about but declined. Jojo and Lucy were with Jasmine, while Harper, Spencer, and Imani were with Isha. I could already sense trouble coming hard at us. “She killed them,” Isha cried, sobbing in the arms of her brothers. “We’ll deal with that later, Isha,” I tried to keep her calm, but that made her angrier.
