CAINES POV
“What script?” Jasmine asked. My heart sank into my stomach, my mind racing with thoughts of what answer I should give. I have never been in a situation where I had to cook up some lie to save my ass. With Jasmine’s gaze, it only got more difficult. “It’s nothing,” I said after much difficulty, forcing a smile. “They’re just trying to stir a drama. Don’t give them that,” I whispered. But Jasmine wasn’t buying that shit. Her narrowed eyes and crossed arms told me she wasn’t letting it slide any time soon. “Drama?” She blurted. I rolled my eyes and pulled her away from the table after taking their orders. I didn’t stop until we were behind the counter. “What happened to revenge?” “What happened to the script you’re supposed to play?” She fired. I exchanged glances with my friends who were sitting at the table, watching us. “Are they in on something involving us?” “You’re overthinking this. Have you suddenly forgotten the people you are dealing with?” I tried to shift the focus. I saw the doubt in her eyes, one I believed would make her waive the topic aside. Her jaw tightened, and for a moment, I thought she was going to push further. Instead, she sighed and started taking out the cups. “Whatever Caine. Are you ready for this?” She asked, trying to hide the smile that was playing around her lips. With a final glance at my friends, I nodded, reaching for my pocket and taking out a bottle filled with bane powder. “Wolf’s bane?” Jasmine gasped, reaching for my hand, but I switched the placement of the bottle. “No touching. Let’s get down,” I smiled, helping her arrange the cups as we filled them with smoothies. Their plates of fries just arrived and arranged them orderly in the trays before ducking behind the counter. “Who’s first on your list?” I asked her. She pulled the paper out of her skirt and unwrapped it excitedly. “Harper,” she whispered. A bottle hit her on the head, shifting her attention from me to over the counter. “Oops! Not my fault Jasmine. Our order just seems to be taking a lot of time,” Jerry mocked. The group chuckled amongst themselves, clearly enjoying the stunts he pulled. Jasmine’s fist clenched, and I sensed her wild getting angry. I grasped her hand and shook my head. “Don’t,” I muttered. In a few seconds. I was done mixing the wolf’s bane with the smoothie. I washed my hands, picked the trays up, and went to serve them. “What’s wrong with you guys?” I said with gritted teeth as I placed the drinks before them. Instead of Harper, I placed the special smoothie before Jerry. “We just thought you might have forgotten the deal. You’re now hanging around with her a lot. I bet Lucy isn’t comfortable with that,” Imani replied. I passed her plates of fries to her before leaning closer to the table. “I was given a long-term unbeaten and uncomfortable dare. How I carry it out shouldn’t be any of your concerns. All you have to do is watch my back and hope I don’t get the “red-haired syndrome,”. I said, pretending to like the joke Jerry always made about Jasmine. They burst into subtle laughter, pulling their meal together while I returned to the counter and watched. Jasmine was holding her phone and making a record. She looked excited and anxious to know how well it would play out. “Our bait today might not be Harper,” I broke the silence between us. “I gave Jerry the drink,” I added. Her brows corked for a second like she was trying to read my reasons. But they were clear. “He deserves it after the stunt he pulled just now,” I helped her out. Her camera redirected to Jerry, who was enjoying the gist around the table. Jasmine's camera stayed steady, her lips curling into a sly grin. “Let’s see how long that grin lasts,” she whispered. It was exciting to see her so animated, even if this entire plan was like treading on dangerous grounds. I know my friends better than anyone. They never forgive completely. “Careful, this could backfire if they catch on,” I muttered, but she ignored me, eyes glued on them. Across the counter, Jerry took a long sip of the smoothie, smacking his lips loudly. “Not bad,” he muttered, taking another gulp. The jokes were still going around, their laughter filling the room until it started. Jerry froze mid-laugh, his expression twisting into one of confusion. “What the hell!” He groaned, rubbing his throat. “What’s wrong?” Imani, who’d been busy tapping her phone, asked immediately. Jerry grasped his throat with both hands, scratching it aggressively. “My throat, it’s burning!” He croaked, his voice strained as he struggled to stand. Panic spread across the table as they all stared at the drink like it was laced with poison—which in a way, it was. “Relax, Jerry,” Harper reached for the water. “Maybe you’re just allergic to something in it. A fruit, perhaps…” “Guys…it's wolf's bane,” Jojo drew their attention. Jerry was wailing like an animal who was being castrated. For a second, I enjoyed the view. “How much bane did you put in it?” Jasmine asked, her expression mixed with excitement and fear. “Half of it,” I replied. The effect it was having on Jerry started getting worse. His throat was emitting heat like he was a vampire placed under the sun. The table went into chaos, and soon, a medical vehicle pulled up at the front. “This way, hurry,” I told Jasmine. We went in through the back of the counter and quickly changed our clothes. My wolf hearing ability became active, and I heard Imani reporting Jasmine to the team. She was planning on coming back in for revenge. “Imani isn’t happy,” “She shouldn’t,” Jasmine replied, coming out of her changing room. We tossed the clothes in the machine and made our exit through the back door. As we burst out in the backyard, I heard a gun cock. My heart leaped, my legs seizing instantly as Jasmine and I froze on our spot. “It’s got to be one of you,” an unfamiliar female voice said. I tried to turn, but the gun corked again, and I knew whosoever it was meant business. “You have the wrong person,” I said, lifting my hands in surrender as I turned. A grin tore across her face, her finger wrapping around the trigger with so much force. “A wolf was spotted on the outskirts of town, and all the trails led me to the diner. I’m sure there’s about a hundred of you here in town. But one of you killed my family, and there’s only one way to find out,” she said, placing her second hand on the gun as she aimed at Jasmine. Her scent was pure…human. And the scent coming from the gun was a rare familiar one. Silver. A wolf hunter! ******JASMINES POV The barrel of the gun aimed at me felt grander than it looked. My heart pounded in my chest, but I forced myself to meet the gaze of the brown-haired lady. “Listen…you’ve got the wrong people,” I started, my voice calm despite the storm brewing in me. “We are just workers at the diner…” “Quit the lies or I’ll blow your eyes off,” she fired, her fingers twitching on the trigger. My hands returned to the air, trembling as my mind raced to figure out what else to say, “Save those lies,” she snapped, taking careful steps forward. “You think it’s my first time dealing with wolves? I know what you are I know what you do! The fake lives. The lies, the masks you wear to blend in,” she paused, her eyes flicking from me to Caine, then back to me. Caine shifted to my front, holding my other hand behind him. “You don’t want to do this,” he said, his voice low but firm. “Killing the wrong people won’t bring those you’ve lost,” “But it will give me peace!” She snapped, and I sa
JASMINES POV “What do you mean, lied?” I asked, finding it difficult to process the words my dad just said. “Dad,” “Sweetie…I’ve been trying to wrap my head around it all this while. It just doesn’t make any sense to me,” he added. But that wasn’t what I wanted to hear. My mother, not human? How were they expecting me to believe that a woman who raised me and whom I lived with for years wasn’t human? “Alpha?” “Your dad and I are still doing research, Jasmine. However, I have a question for you,” he said, sitting up in his chair. I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat and stole a glance at Caine who was standing outside the door. “Where were you the night of the massacre?” He asked. He interrupted my attempt to speak. “Now before you fill me in on how you were with my son all day, we all know that part of the story. What I want to know now, is where you were in the night of the massacre,” he added. I furrowed my brows, trying to get a hold of my thoughts which were
JASMINES POV “Get off me!” I yelled, struggling with the hands that were trying to hold me down. She was too strong for a lady of her size. I kicked several times, throwing failed jabs at her as she held me to the bed. “Tell me!” She growled, placing the gun on my head. But I guess that wasn’t enough to keep me still. To my surprise, even with the nose of a gun placed on my forehead, I didn’t back down. “Let me go! You’re going to get arrested for this!” I growled, yelling in her palm which covered my mouth. She dragged me by the hair and threw me to the floor. Without giving me a chance to get myself, she kicked my torso and dragged my legs. “One last chance, girl!” She growled, pointing the gun at me. My heart was in a race, my sweat mixed with my tears and they streamed down my face. “I’m…I’m the wrong person. You have the…the wrong person,” I said amid my rugged breath, clutching my stomach which hit the iron frame of my bed. My blood dripped from my nose, sending an alar
JASMINES POV “Caine? You’re not supposed to be here,” I said, turning back to return to the glass. But he raced and caught up with me, grabbing my arm just as I was about to walk into the glass confinement. “Wait,” he said, losing the rest of his words as he just stared blankly into my eyes. “What is it, Caine?” I snapped him out of whatever thoughts that may have been creeping into his head. “Urm…you don’t deserve this. To be locked up like you’re some kind of…slave…” he started. I looked away from his eyes, focusing my gaze on the door which he left slightly open. “Jasmine…” “Leave…” “Look…I’m sorry about what I said earlier, okay?” He apologized. “I didn’t mean to. I was tensed and scared and anxious…it was the first time my dad had me…” “Caine…I don’t want you here. Just go,” I tried to slip out of his hand, but he pulled me back. “Aren’t you supposed to be scared of me now? Like the rest of the pack? Aren’t you supposed to walk to me with helmets, or heavily armed?” I s
JASMINES POV The police sirens blared, disturbing the peace of the night. Caine and I took another path different from that which we used to come up the mountain. The base was already surrounded by the police and wolf guards, waiting for a command to engage. “Hurry, this way,” Caine called, pulling my hands towards another path. We ducked under the branches and raced through the foliage, the distant shouts and blaring of the sirens drawing closer. My heart hammered in my heart as adrenaline coursed through my nerves, pushing every muscle in me to run faster. Caine glanced over the trees above us, pausing for a second as we took a scan of the environment around us. “Do you even know where we are going?” I asked, hyperventilating as I grabbed my knees. “We’ll lose them if we can make it to the stream. There’s a tunnel at the bank which leads directly into the pack house. I could sneak you into a car and drive you back to my father's house,” Caine said, withdrawing from where he
CAINES POV Pain. That was the first thing I felt when I woke up. A searing burn in my abdomen that felt like molten fire. My wolf stirred weakly, groaning against the effects of the silver bullet lodged deep in me. After a while of having a blurred vision, the walls surrounding me became clear. “Thought you wouldn’t make it,” a voice sneered, snapping me completely into the moment. My eyes followed the sound of the voice and I found her standing by the window opposite where I was. I struggled to stand, but the metals binding my skin burned deep, frying my flesh. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” she said and turned to me. It was her—-the wolf hunter. I ignored what she said and struggled again, trying to ignore the pains from the silver burn. I growled, giving up as I felt my wolf wince in my head. “What do you want?” I rasped the taste of blood on my tongue. “Answers. I want answers, Caine,” she replied, covering the gap between us. Her voice wavered, betraying the confiden
JASMINES POV I sat at the back of the truck, waiting and watching as the dogs and wolves rallied in the woods, searching for Caine. It was almost an hour since we left the pack house to search for him. A blue truck pulled up, and I saw Spencer behind the wheel. “Spencer…oh thank God,” I muttered and got out of the car. Not that I was happy to see him, but at least people Caine other than myself just pulled up, and their assistance might help us find him faster. What way did he go?” Spencer asked, walking up to me. “Jas?” Lucy ran from the other side of the car into my arms. We hugged for a while before she pulled away and started running her hands around my body. “You’re okay…thank goodness. Where’s my boyfriend? Where’s Caine?” She asked, hyperventilating. “His body was… was urm…taken from the scene last night,” I answered, attempting to pull her into a hug. But she pulled me away and hit my hands off her shoulder. “Taken? What do you mean by taken? You couldn’t protect
JASMINES POV My heart thudded as I started making my way back to the Alpha office. He chased after me and pulled me back. “Think your actions through before jumping into them, Janine,” he warned, tightening his grip around my wrist. I still couldn’t get my eyes off the door of his office. My dad was in there with a Seeker, how confident was the alpha to let just the two of them stay in there? “We need to build trust to know before we strike. In the meantime, I want you all to find Caine. I know he’s still out there,” Alpha Morgan said, finally letting go of my hand. He crouched and unlocked the device on my ankle. “You’re…free to go with them. Your father believes you won’t cause any harm, so I want to believe in that too. Dave will join you guys. Find my son and bring him home,” he said, holding my shoulder. He turned to Lucy who was whimpering on Imani’s shoulder. “Hey, come here,” he said softly, taking her into his arms. “We’ll find him, okay? We’ll find him,” he console
JASMINE’S POV “Can I have a word with you?” I asked, stealing glances at Bryan who was looking out of the window. Caine was still answering a call at the garage while I pulled Lucy to a corner. “That’s him,” I blurted. “Him? What do you mean by him?” “My ex, Lucy, Bryan. That’s him,” I clarified. My heart raced, my blood boiling as I mistakenly looked into his eyes. He looked away immediately, and I knew that guilt was eating him up. “Your…ex? That Bryan?” “Yes, Lucy, that's Bryan,” I answered. “Okay, chill. He’s been my work partner for a while now. I never knew he was the Bryan you were talking about,” Lucy snapped. She noticed that wasn’t going to get me calm, so instead, she took my hands and pulled me closer to her. “Hey, nothing is going on between us, he’s just a colleague. I am with Caine, remember?” She asked. I didn’t want to give her a response, but the way she looked into my eyes demanded one. I nodded consecutively. “Yeah, yeah,” I breathed. “An
LUCY’S POV “Whatever this is, Luce, it’s not normal,” Bryan said, inching closer to me. I sighed, falling back on the wooden chair behind me. We stood for almost ten minutes, waiting for Adrian to finish up with his meal. When he was finally done, he crept out from the darkness, the red eyes still glowing as he made himself visible. I felt tears brewing in my eyes as I stood up and tossed a jacket to him. “Put these on”. “How long has he been this way,” Bryan asked, helping me with the empty blood bags. “A month, two or three weeks. I can’t really tell. All I know is that there was something wrong with him the last time I went home,” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” Adrian interrupted, walking out of the darkness completely. He exhaled, slowly opening his eyes. The red was gone, likewise the rage. “Dad did something new, and for the first time it worked,” “For the first time?” I asked, trying to process what he meant. “Have there been other trials, Adrian?” “Yeah…they all
LUCY'S POVMy heart skipped a beat as the bag fell from my shoulder, the blood bags which I had stolen from the pack clinic sprawling on the floor. “Oh my God! Caine!” I exclaimed, trying to hide the guilt as I started linking them up with a rush. I tossed them into the bag, not paying attention to whatever he was saying.“Lucy, I asked a question!” He pulled my shoulder, sending me to the floor. I fell on my butt, wincing in pain. “Oh my…Luce, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to,”“Stay away from me,” I yelled, stopping him with an extended palm. I took my time on the floor, thinking of what lie to give to him so he wouldn’t go asking questions. “Lucy…I didn’t mean to hit you in that manner,” he apologized, taking further steps closer to me. I burst into tears, burying my head in my legs. That was the first excuse I could garner from my thoughts, just so I’d have enough time to think. “Don’t touch me, Caine,” I whimpered, sobbing into my palms. “You almost ruined it all. My efforts. My har
CAINES POV“You shouldn’t have moved the bodies,” Sheriff Sherwood returned to us, pocketing his gun.“We’re sorry, we just couldn’t stand and do nothing,” I replied. He gestured with his head for us to walk with him, and we didn’t stop until we were out of the crime scene, standing amid police vans and ambulances. I knew what he wanted to say just by looking at him. “Look, I’m sorry uncle, I just had to call in this favor. I understand you’ve helped us a lot of times, and my dad probably owes you for the countless favors you have rendered…”“Kid…”“Just…please. This is more like an outbreak than a crime scene. It’s…” I paused, staring at the bodies that were being moved. “It’s dark,” I completed. Uncle Sherwood, my father's younger brother, was the family’s stray child. He started by not meeting his wolf when he was younger, by hanging out in the human world, and always sneaking out of the house. According to my father, he got into more trouble than we could count. Especially with
JASMINES POVI was too wasted to act. I just sat there, letting the chaos around me do its thing. My head fell to the chair, watching as the ceiling traveled in circles. I thought I saw some runes on them, calling into me with its blue glowing light. They looked pretty, and I extended my hands, wishing I could float in the air and know what they felt like. But the music in the room died down, cutting my solemn moment short.“Let’s go, Jasmine,” I heard Caines voice. He sounded muffled, and I couldn’t see his face. “You’re drunk, how much did you have to drink?” He asked, throwing my hand around his shoulder and grabbing me from the waist. I knew what was happening around me, but at the same time, I didn’t. For a second I thought I was levitating, but then whenever I looked at Caine, that hope was gone. I didn’t feel sad or anything, just…empty. For once., nothing bothered me. Caine led me out of the room, and to stop my eyes from hurting, I closed them and rested my head on his sh
JASMINES POVI pressed my hand against my chest, leaning on the side of the wall as my mind spiraled out of control. Thoughts flew in like my mind was a passageway for them, causing my breath to come out ragged. A lot had happened in just what?—three days? And yet there was still someone downstairs calling me a murderer. How was I supposed to face all these while trying to focus on what wolf I would train? Not to speak of my father's deal with Natalia. I heaved a sigh, halted before my mirror, and ran my hands down my hair. The echoes of laughter and muffled sounds of music traveled into my room, it was a room party which I was informed about but declined. But I couldn’t stay in my room, not with all these thoughts running into my head. I needed a distraction, and the room party just seemed like it.With a little touch on my face and hair, I made my way to the room. Room 27. I knocked twice and the door flung open almost immediately, revealing an unfamiliar face. “I know you,” he
CAINE’S POV“Get off her!” I raced past Jojo and Imani, almost knocking them down as I made my way to Jasmine and Isha. I pulled Isha off her and flung her to the feet of her brothers. “Keep your eyes on her!” I yelled at them. For a second, I thought I saw the disappointment in their eyes. They helped Isha up, holding her still despite her aggressive kicks to be set free and yolk her into the living room. “Are you okay?” I extended my hand to help her up. “Yeah,” she coughed, almost falling back on my shoulder. Lucy stepped in between us. “I’ll take her from here,” she said, pulling Jasmine away from me. We all went into the living room but were divided. Jojo and Lucy were with Jasmine, while Harper, Spencer, and Imani were with Isha. I could already sense trouble coming hard at us. “She killed them,” Isha cried, sobbing in the arms of her brothers. “We’ll deal with that later, Isha,” I tried to keep her calm, but that made her angrier. Her blood-red eyes shot angrily at me, sn
JASMINES POVThoughts. More thoughts. Extra thoughts. All night, that was all running through my mind. A brother? I scoffed, turning to the other side of the bed. That was when I realized the sun was out. I’d spent all night pondering on Natalia’s words. I wanted to come down from my bed and feed my thirst, but my body isn't encouraging. I needed rest, even if it was for an hour or two. I shut my eyes, hoping to sleep this time. And just when I thought I was drifting into sleep, a knock came on my door. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up on the bed. The door opened, it was Caine. “Long night?” He asked, walking into my room. I sighed, collapsing on my bed. “How’s Jerry?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. They were beginning to feel heavy with sleep, but with Caine in my room, I knew my day had just begun. “He’s recovering well. Just the…you know…” he said, helping himself to a chair opposite my bed. I sat back up, holding my banging head with both hands. “Cool,” I dragged. “I came t
JASMINES POV “Where do we start from?” I asked Natalia, slowly walking to the glass while I maintained eye contact with her. “Trust,” she blurted, standing up and walking to the edge of the glass. I halted in front of her, a smile crawling up my lips. “Trust is the last thing you could ask for from me,” I replied, holding the gaze until he nodded with her hands going up in the air. “I’d understand. I mean who would want to trust me after going through that betrayal from her mother,” “She did it to keep me safe,” I defended my mom despite how it hurt me to know about all this. But I guess Natalia could see beneath my words of defense like she knew I was broken. “Did she? I mean…look at the damage she has caused you. She’s made you look weak…you’ve become a mockery…so much for someone who falls under…” “Answers,” I interrupted, holding back the tears in my eyes. The lock of the door clicked from outside, and I quickly took a glance at the key hanging in my trousers. Someone el
