JASMINES POV

The room was quiet for a while, except for the spicy rustle of fabrics and the distant noise of the occasion coming from the Alphas’ house. I stood motionless, staring at the woman in the mirror whom I could barely recognize.

Draped in a black sleek gown, its fabric clinging to my figure and cascading down my knees until they touched my ankles. Its simplicity was unique, its sleeveless design leaving my shoulders and collarbone exposed and glowing under the sheen of carefully applied oil.

“You look…exquisite,” the lady who was getting me dressed for the occasion said, forcing a smile to play around my lips.

“Thank you,” I said, waiting for her to leave my side before I moved out of the chair to take in the full beauty.

How could I look this way and let them bully me all my years in high school?

My red hair stood out, perfectly oiled and aligned to fall my shoulders in a curl.

“Has he arrived?” I asked the lady.

But she shook her head in negation. “I’ll go confirm,” she said.

My heart kept racing at what Caine would say. He was supposed to be here by ten as he promised to drive me to the grand hall. Why hasn't he come yet?

I sighed, trying to take my thoughts away from him when my phone rang. It was my dad. At first, I didn’t want to answer it. Why would I when he wasn’t going to come see me like this beautiful for once?

But on second thought, he was the reason why I came back to the pack, so I answered it.

“Dad?”

“Jas…are you all set? I wanna come down and get you,”

My heart almost dropped. “You’re coming?” I asked.

“Of course Jasmine,”

I hung up the call, trying not to ruin my makeup by sweating out of excitement. The door opened again and the lady who got me dressed came in.

“Caine won’t be picking up tonight again. Something urgent came up which needed his attention,” she said.

Of course, I knew he would disappoint. I mean all that drama just to back out so no one would see him driving the ugly, wolf-less Jasmine to the swearing-in ceremony. Too bad for him, he wouldn’t be the first male eye to see me this way.

On the brighter side, I had my father.

He pulled up a few minutes later and was totally in awe when he saw me walking out of the pack house.

“You look..,”

“Beautiful,” I completed with a soft chuckle, hugging him tightly.

“Just like your mom,” he completed his statement. I swallowed, my mind traveling to her for a second. “Is this what Caine has to deal with when..,”

“Dad…please. Not now,” I cut him short, filling my eyes as I made my way to the passenger seat. Be drove me to the Alpha’s house, down to the grand hall where the event was being held.

It was crowded with the students and other older people. My dad was the beta, so he used his position to get out to the front line them into the hall without having to show out invites.

“Joseph,” a masculine voice called my dad’s attention. It was Morgan Creek, Caine’s father, with his beautiful wife and son. Not Caine. “Been a while you stepped out. You…”

“You are beautiful. Joseph’s daughter?” The woman called my attention away from the men’s talk. I smiled a little and nodded. “What’s your name again?”

“Jasmine,”

“Jasmine,” she repeated with delight, holding her son's arm. “Jasmine, this is Dave, my son. He’s a student too. Why don’t you two get acquainted with each other,” she nudged him to move to me,

My father was so engrossed in his conversation with Caine’s dad that he barely noticed me heaving his side. Dave and I walked the squares of the hall in silence until he broke the silence.

“You’re really beautiful, Jasmine. What grade are you?”

“I’m…I’m done. I’m only here because I need to train my wolf, “ I said proudly, hating the fact that instead of Caine, it was his brother whom I am five years older than who was taking all my efforts to look good tonight, “Have you seen Caine?” I asked before he could say anything else.

“He’s supposed to be here by now. We found the body of one his friends on the street while driving here,”

His words made me halt, my heart fluttering as I tried to process his words,

“Was it a girl?” I asked.

“Yeah,” he replied.

I picked up my purse from the table where I dropped it and started heading out in haste. Dave ran after me.

“The event is about to begin” he called, but I was in a hurry. They’d found Lucy.

I opened the door to the back exit only to bump into Caine. I stumbled back a step, my breath hitching in my throat as my eyes locked with his. His face was etched with a mix of surprise and concern, his eyes scanning the length of my black gown, lingering just a moment too long on my bare shoulders.

“You look…pretty,” those words escaped the lips of Caine Creek, I wanted to slap myself up from sleep, to be pinched on the arm to confirm I wasn’t in some kind of dream or something,

No freaking way he said that.

Did he just call me pretty?

The tickle I felt in my belly traveled up my system in a rush, almost making me blush.

“Thanks. You look good too,” I muttered, uncertain if I was supposed to be complimenting him in return. His suit was styled in a unique design, making him stand out from the other students I had seen tonight.

“The event just started, where are you going?” He asked, now walking into the building. A cling chill ran down my spine the moment he walked past me. His cologne breezed the base of my nose, stirring a very unsettling feeling inside me.

“I…I heard you found Lucy,”

“I see you met Dave, my brother,” he replied instead.

“How’s she?” I asked. He hesitated for a while before answering.

“She’s strong. She’s at the hospital now. Once we get through with the night we’ll go see her by first light,” Caine assured me. We stood staring at each other for a while, the tension between us growing with every passing second.

He inched closer, and I found myself being drawn to him as well. His breath flushed against my skin, our faces a meter apart, and I thought this was the moment.

“Here,” he squeezed something into my hand, shattering my hopes. I swallowed, burying my head to hide my disappointment before checking what he gave to me.

“What is this,”

“Possible questions for tonight. Study them with little time left. I’ll be hanging around,”

“But…” I halted him after he attempted to leave. “Isn’t this cheating?” I asked, covering the gap he created between us.

“What? Do you think everyone makes it out successfully without shortcuts? It’s a castle thing, Jasmine. And if it means cheating for you to win.., I’m willing to go that far,” he said with a steady gaze which left me dumb.

JASMINES POV I sat in that crowd for almost two hours pondering on Caine’s words. It sounded like an invitation to treat, one which could lead me into trouble. But it was a nice offer, yet one I could not accept because he was dating my best friend. After hours of sitting and watching, my babe was finally called. I climbed the stage, the spotlight on me as Alpha Morgan gave the second microphone to me. He asked me questions that I had seen In the leaflet which Caine gave me. We were six questions down, the crowd cheering with every correct answer I had until the last. “Every pack needs a new leader the old one is gone. Who amongst my sons do you think has that in him?” I truer to understand the nature of the question as the silence in the hall grew. It sounded tricky, but we all knew the answer. “Caine,” “And why?” He threw a second question, staring at me closely. “He…urm. He’s strong, carries everyone along, protective, and…” “And not because you love him?” Alpha Morga

JASMINES POV We were racing towards the room where the rest were. Luckily, Lucy’s aunt was there before us. She’d already done what she could to revive Lucy and now she was breathing properly. “Mrs Elena,” I called, letting her pull me into a hug. “How’s she?” I asked. “You worry so much, kid. Lucy will be fine. I’ve written a list of drugs you should get her by morning. She has refused to come home for months. So when she wakes, do send my regards,” Mrs Elena said before leaving. What did she mean Lucy had refused to come home for months? The last time we made inquiries about her she said she was helping her aunt out. I waved it aside, joining my best friend on the bed. Her skin was pale, the blood on her torso staining the bandage which was carefully wrapped around it. “We should get some rest,” Caine broke the silence. “Not to worry, I’m good here,” I said without looking. They left me alone with her, and I slid myself under her duvet, wrapping my arms around her as I dr

I didn’t like to be booed. Hell, I was too pretty for that now. “I came here to…” Bryan paused, shaking his head with a soft chuckle. “How funny. Is this fate's way of joining our paths again? Cos if it is then I sure ain’t ready for that,” “It’s a curse, rather. And neither am I ready to walk around with a curse again,” I fired. By now, the booing from the crowd had grown insane. Some of them were even throwing stuff at us. “Just kiss me and get this over this,” I said, attempting to blindfold myself again. But he stopped me with laughter which sounded like he was mocking me. “What ?” “You think I would do that?” “And you think they would let us get d

My feet and knees scraped against the rocks, my mind racing to make sense of what was happening. “Let go of me!” I tried to scream, clawing at the arm that was holding me. When we stopped, I was slammed into a tree, a sharp stinging pain coursing through my back as I tried to get myself up. My captor finally stepped into the dim light of the moon and my breath hitched. “Bryan?” I spat his name, massaging my throat as I fought myself up. “You think you could humiliate me before everyone and get away with it?” He sneered, reaching for his pocket. Before I could speak, his hands were on my neck again, pressing me hard against the tree. “What do you want, Bryan?” I asked, forcing my voice to sound braver than I felt. A smirk curled his lips, his hand traveling to my forehead with the knife as he leaned in. “You, Jas. I want you to remember who’s in control here. Who’s alwa

Caine’s hand found mine and squeezed it into his, and I could feel the temperature of his body rising with every step we took further. “What happened here?” I muttered, scanning the bodies by the left. My mind was blurred with questions. Could Bryan have done this? No…one person couldn’t wreak such havoc. So what or who was it then? “This is no wild animal,” Caine said like he was answering my thoughts. Something about the scene was off. I could smell it, and I bet Caine could too given the way he was sniffing the air. “This isn’t just blood or death…it’s something unnatural. Something new, dangerous,” he said. “Which means we should leave and probably report it to your dad,” I suggested, beginning to feel the dread of the m

He went down the lane leading to Mrs. Maria’s diner, where I was supposed to work. “Are you sure nothing happened between you and Bryan last night that i should know about?” Caine snapped me out of thoughts as he parked in front of the diner. “Nothing happened. Caine was still answering a call at the garage while I pulled Lucy to a corner. “That’s him,” I blurted. “Him? What do you mean by him?” “My ex, Lucy, Bryan. That’s him,” I clarified. My heart raced, my blood boiling as I mistakenly looked into his eyes. He looked away immediately, and I knew that guilt was eating him up. “Your…ex? That Bryan?” “Yes, Lucy, that's Bryan,” I answered. “Okay, chill. He’s been my work partner for a while now. I never knew he was the Bryan you were talking about,” Lucy snapped. She noticed that wasn’t going to get me calm, so instead, she took my hands and pulled me closer to her. “Hey, nothing is going on between us, he’s just a colleague. I am with Caine, remember?” She asked. I didn’t want to give her a response, but the way she looked into my eyes demanded one. I nodded consecutively. “Yeah, yeah,” I breathed. “An

We stood for almost ten minutes, waiting for Adrian to finish up with his meal. When he was finally done, he crept out from the darkness, the red eyes still glowing as he made himself visible. I felt tears brewing in my eyes as I stood up and tossed a jacket to him. “Put these on”. “How long has he been this way,” Bryan asked, helping me with the empty blood bags. “A month, two or three weeks. I can’t really tell. All I know is that there was something wrong with him the last time I went home,” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” Adrian interrupted, walking out of the darkness completely. He exhaled, slowly opening his eyes. The red was gone, likewise the rage. “Dad did something new, and for the first time it worked,” “For the first time?” I asked, trying to process what he meant. “Have there been other trials, Adrian?” “Yeah…they all

I tossed them into the bag, not paying attention to whatever he was saying.“Lucy, I asked a question!” He pulled my shoulder, sending me to the floor. I fell on my butt, wincing in pain. “Oh my…Luce, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to,”“Stay away from me,” I yelled, stopping him with an extended palm. I took my time on the floor, thinking of what lie to give to him so he wouldn’t go asking questions. “Lucy…I didn’t mean to hit you in that manner,” he apologized, taking further steps closer to me. I burst into tears, burying my head in my legs. I knew what he wanted to say just by looking at him. “Look, I’m sorry uncle, I just had to call in this favor. I understand you’ve helped us a lot of times, and my dad probably owes you for the countless favors you have rendered…”“Kid…”“Just…please. This is more like an outbreak than a crime scene. JASMINES POVI was too wasted to act. I just sat there, letting the chaos around me do its thing. My head fell to the chair, watching as the ceiling traveled in circles. I thought I saw some runes on them, calling into me with its blue glowing light. They looked pretty, and I extended my hands, wishing I could float in the air and know what they felt like. But the music in the room died down, cutting my solemn moment short.“Let’s go, Jasmine,” I heard Caines voice. He sounded muffled, and I couldn’t see his face. “You’re drunk, how much did you have to drink?” He asked, throwing my hand around his shoulder and grabbing me from the waist. I knew what was happening around me, but at the same time, I didn’t. For a second I thought I was levitating, but then whenever I looked at Caine, that hope was gone. I didn’t feel sad or anything, just…empty. For once., nothing bothered me. Caine led me out of the room, and to stop my eyes from hurting, I closed them and rested my head on his sh

JASMINES POVI pressed my hand against my chest, leaning on the side of the wall as my mind spiraled out of control. Thoughts flew in like my mind was a passageway for them, causing my breath to come out ragged. A lot had happened in just what?—three days? And yet there was still someone downstairs calling me a murderer. How was I supposed to face all these while trying to focus on what wolf I would train? Not to speak of my father's deal with Natalia. I heaved a sigh, halted before my mirror, and ran my hands down my hair. The echoes of laughter and muffled sounds of music traveled into my room, it was a room party which I was informed about but declined. But I couldn’t stay in my room, not with all these thoughts running into my head. I needed a distraction, and the room party just seemed like it.With a little touch on my face and hair, I made my way to the room. Room 27. They helped Isha up, holding her still despite her aggressive kicks to be set free and yolk her into the living room. “Are you okay?” I extended my hand to help her up. “Yeah,” she coughed, almost falling back on my shoulder. Lucy stepped in between us. “I’ll take her from here,” she said, pulling Jasmine away from me. We all went into the living room but were divided. Jojo and Lucy were with Jasmine, while Harper, Spencer, and Imani were with Isha. I could already sense trouble coming hard at us. “She killed them,” Isha cried, sobbing in the arms of her brothers. “We’ll deal with that later, Isha,” I tried to keep her calm, but that made her angrier. I needed rest, even if it was for an hour or two. I shut my eyes, hoping to sleep this time. And just when I thought I was drifting into sleep, a knock came on my door. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up on the bed. The door opened, it was Caine. “Long night?” He asked, walking into my room. I sighed, collapsing on my bed. “How’s Jerry?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. They were beginning to feel heavy with sleep, but with Caine in my room, I knew my day had just begun. “He’s recovering well. Just the…you know…” he said, helping himself to a chair opposite my bed.
