Ava's POV

A Decade Ago 2010

Ava is 11 years old

The muffled sound of voices seeped into my dreams, dragging me into consciousness. Groggy and confused, I rubbed my eyes and stumbled toward the hallway of our second-floor flat. The morning light filtered through the windows, casting soft shadows on the walls.

At the far end of the corridor, my mom stood talking to a woman who balanced a stack of moving boxes effortlessly in her arms. She was elegant yet approachable, her voice carrying warmth that softened her commanding presence.

"Come here, Ava!" my mom called, pulling me out of my daze. "Meet Tara Aunty, our new neighbor."

I hesitated for a moment before walking over and offering a polite smile. "Hi, Aunty. Welcome!"

Her face lit up as she smiled back at me. "Thank you, Ava! What a lovely young lady she is," she said, glancing at my mom. Before I could respond, a boy's voice cut through the air, laced with exaggerated frustration.

"Ma, Dad's making me take the stairs with these boxes. Isn't that child labor? I'm twelve!"

I turned toward the voice and saw him. A boy about my age emerged from the staircase, looking like a carbon copy of Tara Aunty. He was undeniably attractive, his sharp features and confident stride giving him a presence far beyond his years.

But then I saw the boxes he was complaining about—small, almost laughably so compared to what Tara Aunty had been carrying. I couldn't help the faint smirk tugging at my lips.

"Darsh," his mom said with a mix of amusement and exasperation. "We'll talk about that later. Come here and meet our neighbors—Savi Aunty and her daughter, Ava."

His expression shifted instantly, frustration melting into a charming, almost practiced smile. He greeted us with a warmth that didn't match his earlier complaints, leaving me momentarily disarmed.

So, this was Darsh.

The moment the introductions were over, I spun on my heel. "Ma, I'm going to Priti's!" I called out, already halfway down the stairs.

I sprinted to the building next door, my sandals slapping against the pavement, and reached Priti's house in record time. Her dad answered the door, smiling as always. "Morning, Ava!"

"Morning, uncle!" I replied breathlessly, darting past him and up the stairs to Priti's room.

Inside, I found her brushing her teeth, the bathroom door wide open. Typical.

"How many times have I told you not to leave the door open?" I asked, leaning against the doorway.

"How many times have I told you to knock?" she shot back without missing a beat, toothpaste foaming at the corners of her mouth.

I rolled my eyes and opened my mouth to speak, but before I could, she grabbed a spare toothbrush and shoved it into my hand.

"How did you know I haven't brushed yet?" I asked, genuinely puzzled.

"You've got a little drool on the left side," she replied casually, her smirk deepening.

It hit me like a lightning bolt. That charming smile Darsh had given earlier? It wasn't a smile at all. He was laughing at me—because of the drool.

Priti watched as realization dawned on my face. "So, I'm guessing someone moved into the flat across from yours?"

I sighed, trying to play it cool. "Yeah, there's a new boy around our age. He's alright, I guess."

"Mmhmm," she replied, raising an eyebrow, her skepticism clear.

I caved. "Fine! One: he looks like he walked straight off a magazine cover. Two: he's a year older than me, same as you. Three: I might have liked him because of his cute little complaints. And four: only you and Kyra are allowed to know about this!" I held up four fingers for emphasis.

Priti's grin widened. "Got it. Now bring Darsh to the game this evening."

I froze. "Wait... how do you know his name?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.

She didn't answer. Instead, she disappeared into the hallway, leaving me standing there, flustered and annoyed.

Later at breakfast, I couldn't contain my irritation. Leaning across the table, I glared at Priti. "I've known you for a decade, and I'm only eleven. Why have I never heard about this cousin of yours?"

Priti simply shrugged, entirely unbothered. "It's okay. Your secret's safe with me," she said with a knowing smirk.

I groaned, burying my face in my hands. Why did I even bother?

Ava's POV Every Sunday evening, like clockwork, the kids in the colony gathered near the bamboo grove for the most anticipated game of the week. The air buzzed with excitement as teams were about to be formed. Some kids whispered strategies, while others jostled for their preferred teammates. I, however, had my eyes fixed on the far end of the clearing, waiting for Priti. She was supposed to bring Darsh—the new boy, her cousin—to join the game. I was still trying to wrap my head around that revelation. Priti and Darsh? Cousins? How did she conveniently forget to mention that? "Ava will be on my team no matter what, and if anyone dares to throw the ball at her, I swear I'll break their hands!" Abhi's voice thundered across the clearing, drawing groans and muffled laughter from the group. I rolled my eyes, my patience already wearing thin. "Seriously, Abhi? Throwing the ball at your opponent is literally the whole point of Seven Stones. If you ruin the game again like last week, thi

March, 2015 (6 years later) "You know, this might be a bad idea—coming from this side of the street at night. Do you see those street dogs on the left? They look ready to jump us any second now," I said, watching the dogs from the corner of my eye. "Don't look at them, don't walk fast, and most importantly, don't you dare run," Virin commanded in a tone that suggested he was already blaming me for whatever disaster might unfold. "I'm not promising anything," I replied, quickening my pace, my full attention on the dogs that were now following us. "What is it with you and dogs? Even Darsh's dog seems to hate you," Kyra said, laughing. "How would I know? Last time I checked, I don't speak dog," I muttered, trying to avoid the topic. "Oh, wait. I know that horrible expression you make when you're trying to cover something up. What did you do to my cute Rocher?!" Virin shouted as if Rocher were his own dog. Ugh. I wished this topic had never come up. Virin would never stop pestering

March 1, 2015 I hugged myself as a cool gust of air rushed through the corridor, sending a shiver down my spine. I waited for Darsh to open the door, rubbing my arms to ward off the chill. "I'll get the clothes, you feed your dog," I said, heading to the other side of the house. Sliding the balcony door open, I was met with a sudden spray of rain. Why is it raining in the middle of March again? I grabbed the clothes, pulling them inside as the rain drenched me. "Darsh?" I called out, not seeing him anywhere. "In here," came his reply from his room. With slight hesitation, I walked in. His disapproving gaze met mine as he noticed my soaked state. "You should have left them out there instead of getting drenched," he said, heading to his cupboard to fetch a towel. I rolled my eyes, standing there idly, my gaze wandering around his room. That's when something on his table caught my attention. A diary? Really? I smirked, checking to make sure he was still rummaging in the closet. I g

March, 2015 "Why set an alarm if you're not going to GET UP?!" I shouted at Priti, who remained blissfully unconscious. She didn't even stir, and neither did Kyra, sprawled on the left, nor Virin, snoring away on the makeshift bed on the floor. I rarely hated my friends, but mornings like this tested my patience. "OY! Are you planning to get up, or should I just let it ring for eternity?" I jabbed Priti's shoulder. "Yeah, yeah, wait for the sixth ring," she mumbled, her voice muffled by the pillow. "That's when I'll go to the gym." By the time the alarm rang for the tenth time, they finally stirred and shuffled off home. As soon as they left, I grabbed the journal I'd kept hidden since yesterday. I hadn't had a chance to look at it—until now. Let's do this. I sat at the table, my heart pounding as I opened it. An empty journal? Are you kidding me? Why fight so hard to keep this hidden if there's nothing in it? I even got my reading glasses for this! There has to be something. Anyt

March, 2015 I immediately tried to step out as the lift doors opened, desperate to save myself from more embarrassment, but Darsh caught my arm. Without a word, he tugged me along and led me to the terrace. The moment we were alone, I found myself pinned against the all-too-familiar wall once again. "I thought we agreed never to like each other again?" he asked, his voice calm but his eyes stormy, reminding me of the heated conversation we had two weeks ago. I sighed, too drained to fight. "It's your fault for choosing a college so far away from me. Baby, I can't even survive two weeks without you, and now you're leaving for God knows how long," I said, my frustration spilling over. His intense gaze softened for a moment before he leaned in and captured my lips. The world around us disappeared as the space between us seemed to explode. My heart raced, each beat thundering in my chest, as his hands found their way under my shirt, his touch igniting a fire across my bare skin. I coul

March, 2015 Darsh's POV: "You have to believe me! She rolled her eyes at me when I kissed you," Ava said, glaring at my dog with all the conviction in the world. She sat on my lap, arms wrapped around me, her pout making me laugh suppressively. I never thought I'd find myself so eager, so patient to listen to someone talk endlessly. I've always hated listening to people blabber. I still do except when it's her. I always act uninterested when she's talking, but the truth is, I hang onto every word that comes out of her mouth. Even now, I remember the first time I saw her. Her eyes twinkled with mischief, and a little drool on the corner of her lips made me chuckle. She was adorable and still is. Ava tries to be the world's best actor, but she's terrible at it. She gets caught every time she pulls one of her silly pranks on any girl who gets too close to me. This crazy girlfriend of mine has been stalking me since the day we met. She knew my entire schedule: what shirt I'd wear, wh

March, 2015 Ava's POV: "Ava, we are concerned too, but Kyra is alright now and they are investigating the case. Just eat. It's been a day since you ate anything," Abhi pleaded for what felt like the hundredth time. It's not that I'm on a hunger strike. It's just... everything happened in the blink of an eye. One moment, we were immature teenagers, and the next, we were victims and suspects. They've taken Darsh in for questioning. It's too much to digest. Every time I try to take a bite, my stomach churns, refusing to cooperate. I've been sitting outside Kyra's hospital room for over an hour, staring blankly at the wall, replaying the events over and over since they took Darsh away. Darsh's parents left to talk to their lawyer. Virin's family stayed here with us, their somber presence a reminder of the gravity of the situation. My mom was busy comforting the twins' mother, but even she couldn't hide her own anxiety. "I'm sorry to bother you further, but we need to ask some questi

March, 2015 Darsh's POV: I sat in a wooden chair in front of a wooden desk. Across from me, a man lounged with his evening tea balanced precariously on a saucer resting on his potbelly. According to them, I tried to kill my friend, and the damning evidence was a keychain. Fu*k my life. "Sir, I have been sitting here for more than an hour. First of all, this is a waste of time. The real criminal, the one who stabbed her, is still out there," I said, disrupting his serene tea-drinking session. His moustache twitched, clearly displeased. "Hmm," he hummed, putting down the cup. "We will be the judge of whether or not this is a waste of time." He pulled out a pen and paper, his demeanor stiffening. "Now, tell me again." "The keychain is mine. I'm not denying that," I said firmly. "But it was with me in the car when I took Kyra to the hospital. She must have grabbed something else from the criminal. This keychain is a distraction." I leaned forward. "My girlfriend can confirm that I wa

You know she came up with ideas to take our baby far while I was sleeping and cuddled with me", he looked at me like he couldn't believe it. They fight like siblings", I smiled looking at Sara's picture where she was covered with chocolate all over her face then he went to the next one. He tilted his head down to stare into my eyes, "You look gorgeous in this dress", I turned red as he stared at me with lust, rubbing his thumb over my bottom lip. "But I don't like it that you dressed for another man", then he kissed me deeply mouth to mouth. Holding my hair, and ass in his hands until the elevator came to an abrupt stop. My parents are panicking more than me. Knowing them, Understandable. "I love my Sara and I know she is better now. Don't divert this. It's been a day since you told him. Why is he taking time if he is not thinking otherwise?", I rolled my eyes and sat down on the stool by the counter in the kitchen drinking some water. "It's been 19 hours and most of it was night. Let him think Ma, it's a big decision on anyone. You swore to not look at him again, before Sara happened or should I remind you the exact dialogue", I said peacefully when I am nowhere near that. This is what bothers me. I don't want them to accept Abhi because of Sara. I want them to look at him as he is. "Ava, what if he decides to not come back to you?", my dad came in asking me.
