Ava's POV

Every Sunday evening, like clockwork, the kids in the colony gathered near the bamboo grove for the most anticipated game of the week.

The air buzzed with excitement as teams were about to be formed. Some kids whispered strategies, while others jostled for their preferred teammates. I, however, had my eyes fixed on the far end of the clearing, waiting for Priti. She was supposed to bring Darsh—the new boy, her cousin—to join the game.

I was still trying to wrap my head around that revelation. Priti and Darsh? Cousins? How did she conveniently forget to mention that?

"Ava will be on my team no matter what, and if anyone dares to throw the ball at her, I swear I'll break their hands!" Abhi's voice thundered across the clearing, drawing groans and muffled laughter from the group.

I rolled my eyes, my patience already wearing thin. "Seriously, Abhi? Throwing the ball at your opponent is literally the whole point of Seven Stones. If you ruin the game again like last week, this will be the last time you play with us!"

His overprotectiveness was suffocating, and everyone here knew it. Most kids wouldn't even dare to aim the ball near me, fearing Abhi's wrath. Thanks to him, my circle of friends was laughably small—just Priti and Kyra. And, of course, there was Virin, Kyra's twin brother, who had been "safeguarded" by Abhi's demand that I tie a rakhi on him.

Just as I was fuming, I spotted Priti walking toward us with Darsh in tow. My sour mood lifted a fraction.

"Everyone, this is Darsh," I said as they approached. "He's new to the colony. They just moved here from Mumbai."

Darsh gave a small, polite wave as the others greeted him. The kids, curious but welcoming, threw a few smiles his way. All except Abhi, who narrowed his eyes, sizing him up.

"Darsh, I hope you know how to play Seven Stones," Kyra asked, her tone light but her excitement unmistakable. She gestured toward the stack of flat stones placed beside the ball.

Darsh glanced at the setup, his brow furrowing slightly. "No, this is my first time hearing about it," he admitted.

Kyra's eyes sparkled as she launched into an explanation. "It's simple. Two teams take turns trying to knock over the stack of stones with the ball. Once your team knocks it down, you have to rebuild the stack while dodging the ball. If anyone gets hit while placing the stones, the other team wins."

As Kyra spoke, the teams were chosen. I strategically avoided being on Abhi's team, knowing he'd turn the game into some misguided bodyguard duty. My team included Priti, Darsh, and a few others, while Abhi, Kyra, Virin, and two more kids made up the opposing side.

The game began with a burst of energy. Priti stepped up first, launching the ball with precision and knocking the stones down in one try. Cheers erupted from our team as we scattered across the field, adrenaline surging through our veins.

I dodged and weaved, scanning the ground for the final stone. My heart pounded as I spotted it just a few feet away, but before I could grab it, I heard the unmistakable thud of a ball hitting flesh.

The field fell silent.

Darsh stood frozen, clutching his stomach where the ball had struck. His eyes watered, though he refused to cry out.

I was by his side in an instant. "Are you okay?" I asked, my voice shaky with concern.

"I'm fine," he managed, though his strained voice betrayed the pain he was hiding.

Anger bubbled up inside me as I turned to Abhi. "Did you have to throw the ball that hard?!"

Abhi shrugged, a smirk playing on his lips. "What? Isn't that the whole point of the game? Or did you forget those were your words?"

I glared at him, but before I could respond, Virin shouted, "Not to interrupt your fight, but... we won!"

Kyra smacked her brother on the head, earning a laugh from Darsh despite the pain he was in. The tension broke, and the game resumed after a short break, with Darsh sitting out for one round.

By the time the games ended, our team had won two out of five matches. We were tired, sweaty, and exhilarated as we trudged back toward our respective homes.

Darsh walked beside me, a quiet smile playing on his lips. Just as I was about to ask how he was feeling, Abhi grabbed my arm, pulling me back.

"What now?" I asked, exasperated.

"You're walking with me," he said firmly, lacing his fingers through mine as if that settled the matter.

I sighed, too tired to argue, but my annoyance returned tenfold when I glanced back and saw Kyra and Darsh exchanging smiles.

No.

Absolutely not.

They look ready to jump us any second now," I said, watching the dogs from the corner of my eye. "Don't look at them, don't walk fast, and most importantly, don't you dare run," Virin commanded in a tone that suggested he was already blaming me for whatever disaster might unfold. "I'm not promising anything," I replied, quickening my pace, my full attention on the dogs that were now following us. "What is it with you and dogs? Even Darsh's dog seems to hate you," Kyra said, laughing. "How would I know? Last time I checked, I don't speak dog," I muttered, trying to avoid the topic. "Oh, wait. I know that horrible expression you make when you're trying to cover something up. What did you do to my cute Rocher?!" Virin shouted as if Rocher were his own dog. Ugh. I wished this topic had never come up. Virin would never stop pestering

March 1, 2015 I hugged myself as a cool gust of air rushed through the corridor, sending a shiver down my spine. I waited for Darsh to open the door, rubbing my arms to ward off the chill. "I'll get the clothes, you feed your dog," I said, heading to the other side of the house. Sliding the balcony door open, I was met with a sudden spray of rain. Why is it raining in the middle of March again? I grabbed the clothes, pulling them inside as the rain drenched me. "Darsh?" I called out, not seeing him anywhere. "In here," came his reply from his room. With slight hesitation, I walked in. His disapproving gaze met mine as he noticed my soaked state. "You should have left them out there instead of getting drenched," he said, heading to his cupboard to fetch a towel. I rolled my eyes, standing there idly, my gaze wandering around his room. That's when something on his table caught my attention. A diary? Really? I smirked, checking to make sure he was still rummaging in the closet. I g

March, 2015 "Why set an alarm if you're not going to GET UP?!" I shouted at Priti, who remained blissfully unconscious. She didn't even stir, and neither did Kyra, sprawled on the left, nor Virin, snoring away on the makeshift bed on the floor. I rarely hated my friends, but mornings like this tested my patience. "OY! Are you planning to get up, or should I just let it ring for eternity?" I jabbed Priti's shoulder. "Yeah, yeah, wait for the sixth ring," she mumbled, her voice muffled by the pillow. "That's when I'll go to the gym." By the time the alarm rang for the tenth time, they finally stirred and shuffled off home. As soon as they left, I grabbed the journal I'd kept hidden since yesterday. I hadn't had a chance to look at it—until now. Let's do this. I sat at the table, my heart pounding as I opened it. An empty journal? Are you kidding me? Why fight so hard to keep this hidden if there's nothing in it? I even got my reading glasses for this! There has to be something. Anyt

March, 2015 I immediately tried to step out as the lift doors opened, desperate to save myself from more embarrassment, but Darsh caught my arm. Without a word, he tugged me along and led me to the terrace. The moment we were alone, I found myself pinned against the all-too-familiar wall once again. "I thought we agreed never to like each other again?" he asked, his voice calm but his eyes stormy, reminding me of the heated conversation we had two weeks ago. I sighed, too drained to fight. "It's your fault for choosing a college so far away from me. Baby, I can't even survive two weeks without you, and now you're leaving for God knows how long," I said, my frustration spilling over. His intense gaze softened for a moment before he leaned in and captured my lips. The world around us disappeared as the space between us seemed to explode. My heart raced, each beat thundering in my chest, as his hands found their way under my shirt, his touch igniting a fire across my bare skin. I coul

March, 2015 Darsh's POV: "You have to believe me! She rolled her eyes at me when I kissed you," Ava said, glaring at my dog with all the conviction in the world. She sat on my lap, arms wrapped around me, her pout making me laugh suppressively. I never thought I'd find myself so eager, so patient to listen to someone talk endlessly. I've always hated listening to people blabber. I still do except when it's her. I always act uninterested when she's talking, but the truth is, I hang onto every word that comes out of her mouth. Even now, I remember the first time I saw her. Her eyes twinkled with mischief, and a little drool on the corner of her lips made me chuckle. She was adorable and still is. Ava tries to be the world's best actor, but she's terrible at it. She gets caught every time she pulls one of her silly pranks on any girl who gets too close to me. One moment, we were immature teenagers, and the next, we were victims and suspects. They've taken Darsh in for questioning. It's too much to digest. Every time I try to take a bite, my stomach churns, refusing to cooperate. I've been sitting outside Kyra's hospital room for over an hour, staring blankly at the wall, replaying the events over and over since they took Darsh away. Darsh's parents left to talk to their lawyer. Virin's family stayed here with us, their somber presence a reminder of the gravity of the situation. March, 2015 Darsh's POV: I sat in a wooden chair in front of a wooden desk. Across from me, a man lounged with his evening tea balanced precariously on a saucer resting on his potbelly. According to them, I tried to kill my friend, and the damning evidence was a keychain. Fu*k my life. "Sir, I have been sitting here for more than an hour. First of all, this is a waste of time. The real criminal, the one who stabbed her, is still out there," I said, disrupting his serene tea-drinking session. His moustache twitched, clearly displeased. "Hmm," he hummed, putting down the cup. "We will be the judge of whether or not this is a waste of time." He pulled out a pen and paper, his demeanor stiffening. "Now, tell me again." "The keychain is mine. I'm not denying that," I said firmly. "But it was with me in the car when I took Kyra to the hospital. She must have grabbed something else from the criminal. March, 2015 Ava's POV: I most definitely didn't imagine my week like this when I suggested we should plan something for this weekend at the café. My mom was driving me home, fuming from the conversation at the hospital. "How long has this been going on? How long have you been lying and sneaking around with him?!" she demanded as soon as we got home, her voice cutting through the silence like a whip. I froze, her words shocking me to my core. "What do you even know about us to talk like that!" I shot back, my voice shaking with a mix of anger and hurt. "Shut up! Don't even try to defend what you did. Is this what you've been doing every time you said you were going to Priti's?" she snapped, her glare searing into me. "Ma, please.
