March, 2015

Ava's POV:

"Ava, we are concerned too, but Kyra is alright now and they are investigating the case. Just eat. It's been a day since you ate anything," Abhi pleaded for what felt like the hundredth time.

It's not that I'm on a hunger strike. It's just... everything happened in the blink of an eye. One moment, we were immature teenagers, and the next, we were victims and suspects.

They've taken Darsh in for questioning. It's too much to digest. Every time I try to take a bite, my stomach churns, refusing to cooperate.

I've been sitting outside Kyra's hospital room for over an hour, staring blankly at the wall, replaying the events over and over since they took Darsh away.

Darsh's parents left to talk to their lawyer. Virin's family stayed here with us, their somber presence a reminder of the gravity of the situation. My mom was busy comforting the twins' mother, but even she couldn't hide her own anxiety.

"I'm sorry to bother you further, but we need to ask some questions regarding the case," a police officer approached Kyra's father with a calm but firm demeanor. Kyra's father agreed, nodding solemnly.

"If you don't mind, I need to talk with Darsh and Kyra's friends," the officer added. My overprotective mother immediately intervened.

"There's an open space near the stairs. You can question them there—but only in the presence of their parents," she demanded. The officer hesitated but eventually agreed. Together, we moved to the designated spot along with my mom and Virin's dad.

"First of all, we have some questions for Darsh's girlfriend," the officer stated. Everyone around froze, confusion written all over their faces. Only Priti knew about our relationship, and she wasn't here—she had gone with Darsh's parents. The twins only knew about my hopeless crush on him.

I swallowed hard, stealing a glance at my mom's expression—a mix of shock and suspicion. I took a deep breath and stepped forward. "That's me," I admitted, bracing myself for the storm that was sure to follow. My mom's baffled expression turned into one of sheer disbelief.

"We can do this privately if you're not comfortable," the officer offered, sensing the tension. My mom, ever the protective hawk, spoke up before I could. "Yes. Everyone, please leave me and my daughter alone for this questioning," she said, her voice sharp.

Oh God. She's already digging a grave for me in that brain of hers.

As the others left, the officer began. "Were you with Darsh the night Kyra was kidnapped?"

My mom's grip on my hand tightened painfully, enough to leave marks. "Yes," I answered, my voice steady despite the throbbing ache in my hand.

"Can you tell us the exact time and if anyone else was with you?" the officer asked, his gaze flicking between me and my mom.

"From 6 to 10 in the evening. His parents were out for dinner," I replied, feeling the weight of my mother's glare.

"Ma'am, we were just confirming his alibi during the timeframe of Kyra's disappearance," the officer explained, trying to defuse my mother's escalating anger.

As soon as the officers left, my mom's grip turned into a vice as she dragged me down the corridor. "You have a lot of explaining to do. We are going home now!" she barked.

We passed by Kyra's hospital room where Darsh's mom, Tara Aunty, stopped us. "Ava! Tell them that Darsh was with you the entire time this happened," she pleaded, gesturing toward Virin and his parents.

"Enough! She already gave her statement. Don't use my daughter to defend your son from another one of his cheap stunts!" my mom snapped. Her words felt like a slap, sharp and undeserved.

"Mom! He didn't do anything. He was with me the whole time, and I was there most willin—" Before I could finish, her hand came down hard across my face. The sting was immediate, and the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth.

"Savi! This is not the time for this!" Kyra's mom interjected, holding me steady as I reeled from the blow. I stood there, stunned, as my mom and Tara Aunty continued to argue.

"When is the time, then?" my mom shouted. "Her son dragged my daughter into this mess, and now she wants her to cover for him?!"

"Savi, enough! Everyone is so quick to blame my son. Would you accuse him this way if it were Abhi?" Tara Aunty fired back.

"Abhi would never stoop so low," my mom retorted, her voice dripping with disdain.

"And you think your daughter is innocent? Maybe you should ask the girls she's tormented in our colony," Tara Aunty shot back, her words cutting like knives.

I couldn't take it anymore. "Aunty, as amusing as it is for both you and my mom to blame each other, maybe you've forgotten that Kyra was stabbed, and Darsh is sitting in a police station," I snapped, my voice laced with frustration as I stormed off.

I searched for Abhi and Virin. Abhi was nowhere to be found, and Virin's blank, defeated expression only made my chest tighten further. Seeing his usually cheerful face clouded with despair was almost unbearable.

"You better keep your son away from my daughter!" my mom yelled after me.

I rolled my eyes, muttering under my breath, "Kids. That's what you all sound like."

March, 2015 Darsh's POV: I sat in a wooden chair in front of a wooden desk. Across from me, a man lounged with his evening tea balanced precariously on a saucer resting on his potbelly. According to them, I tried to kill my friend, and the damning evidence was a keychain. Fu*k my life. "Sir, I have been sitting here for more than an hour. First of all, this is a waste of time. The real criminal, the one who stabbed her, is still out there," I said, disrupting his serene tea-drinking session. His moustache twitched, clearly displeased. "Hmm," he hummed, putting down the cup. "We will be the judge of whether or not this is a waste of time." He pulled out a pen and paper, his demeanor stiffening. "Now, tell me again." "The keychain is mine. I'm not denying that," I said firmly. "But it was with me in the car when I took Kyra to the hospital. She must have grabbed something else from the criminal. This keychain is a distraction." I leaned forward. "My girlfriend can confirm that I wa

March, 2015 Ava's POV: I most definitely didn't imagine my week like this when I suggested we should plan something for this weekend at the café. My mom was driving me home, fuming from the conversation at the hospital. "How long has this been going on? How long have you been lying and sneaking around with him?!" she demanded as soon as we got home, her voice cutting through the silence like a whip. I froze, her words shocking me to my core. "What do you even know about us to talk like that!" I shot back, my voice shaking with a mix of anger and hurt. "Shut up! Don't even try to defend what you did. Is this what you've been doing every time you said you were going to Priti's?" she snapped, her glare searing into me. "Ma, please. If you found out any other way, you wouldn't be reacting like this," I pleaded, my voice trembling. "Mmhmm. How would I react any other way when I find out that my daughter is sleeping around?" she shouted, her voice dripping with disdain. "Mom! How cou

March 2015 Ava's POV "You stay right here. Don't pull any more stunts; I'll be back in ten minutes," my mom instructed sternly before leaving me with Kyra and Priti in the hospital room. I nodded, keeping my head down, doing my best impression of an obedient daughter until she left. The moment the door clicked shut, I exhaled and sprawled out on the couch at the end of the room. "Oh my God, that's it! I'm eloping with Darsh. Final decision!" I declared dramatically, leaning back with faux exasperation. Kyra snorted, while Priti shot me an incredulous look. "What? I'm serious. Start preparing to be an aunt, Priti!" "Stop it," Priti hissed. "If your mom hears you, she'll throw you out the window." "It wouldn't be any worse than her endless lectures," I retorted, rolling my eyes. "It's been a week since I last saw him. She even confiscated my phone when she caught me sneaking back after meeting Darsh that night." I sighed, feeling the weight of my mom's iron-fisted control pressing

She called out after me, confused, but I didn't care. I stormed down the hallway, my heels clicking furiously against the tiles, when she caught up. "Why do you look like that?" she asked, eyeing me suspiciously. "Nothing," I said through gritted teeth, trying to maintain some semblance of control. "God, what did you do now?" she muttered, exasperated. That was it. I stopped dead in my tracks, spinning to face her. "Do you hate me so much that you couldn't even give me a choice about who I want in my life?!" I yelled, my voice echoing down the corridor. She froze, stunned by my outburst. "What are you talking about?" "When were you planning to tell me about the engagement?" I asked, my voice sharp and unforgiving. Her expression shifted as realization dawned. "Ava, let me explain. After a week: Ava's POV "I just fed you, for God's sake! Let me take a nap," I groaned as Rocher barked directly in my ear, her persistence impossible to ignore. "What is it now?" I sighed, sitting up, my hair a tousled mess. Rocher tilted her head, her sharp eyes studying me with what felt like judgment. I rubbed my temples and started counting on my fingers. "Walking? Check. Feeding? Check. What else could you possibly want?" Her disapproving stare didn't waver. "Oh, right. The collar," I said, realization dawning. She wagged her tail like a queen who'd just received her due recognition. "Huh, fine. Let's go," I muttered, scooping her up. Her victorious bark was almost smug as we headed out. *** "Leave it, Rocher! That's too expensive! Are you trying to bankrupt me?" I whisper-yelled, tugging at the fancy, rhinestone-encrusted collar she had clamped in her teeth. She was holding on for dear life, her determination unmatched. August 2015 Ava's POV "Please check the number you have dialed." The same automated voice echoed in my ear, one I had grown numb to over the past few months. He's not coming back. How hard is it to accept? I squatted down, my finger tracing over the faded letters etched into the wall: D&A encased in a heart. The immaturity of it stung. I glanced around the terrace, letting out a shaky breath as the heaviness crept in, weighing down my chest. Every corner of this space held a memory of us—each one a bittersweet reminder. My phone vibrated in my pocket, snapping me out of the spiral. For a fleeting second, hope fluttered, irrational and stubborn. But reality struck as I saw the name on the screen. "Ava, they're leaving now. Come down," Abhi's voice broke through. Why did I still hope it would be him? How pathetic. "I'll be there in a minute," I replied, masking my disappointment. *** "Miss me every day, okay?" Virin said, his voice catching as he kissed my cheek and pulled me i

"Nope, I only have one ass," he said smugly, glancing over his shoulder. "God, you really need to follow better meme pages," I replied, crinkling my nose. "You're just jealous of my timing," he quipped, puffing out his chest. I feigned gagging at his smugness. "Jealous? Of that? Please." Before I could react, he wrapped his arm around my neck in a playful chokehold. "Oh, let me help you stop the puke. Come here," he teased. Big mistake. I stomped hard on his foot, and he let go immediately, yelping in pain. "Ow! My toe! You've ruined my chances at professional dance," he cried dramatically, grabbing my arm for support. "Who told you to mess with me?" I smirked, helping him to a nearby bench. "What's going on here?" Siddi asked, strolling over with her ever-present bag of chips. "She murdered my toe!" Arun wail

Ava's POV I crouched down, picking up the same card that greeted me every day on the terrace. Today's cringe-worthy quote read: "Have enough courage to trust love one more time." I laughed out loud, shaking my head. "God, you're getting sappier every day," I said, dialing the ingenious person behind this. Coming down the stairs. "Well, I wouldn't have to if you gave me a chance," Abhi answered, his voice carrying that familiar mix of teasing and sincerity. "It's been years, Ava. Even my stash of quotes is running dry." I bit my lip, unsure how to respond. His words hung in the air, daring me to acknowledge the unspoken question behind them. I stepped inside my room and leaned against the door. "Relax, Ava," he said after a pause, his voice softening. "Stop overthinking. I'm with Rocher in the lawn—come down." I glanced at her empty bed and sighed. "Alright, I'm coming." *** When I reached the lawn, Rocher was bounding happily around Abhi, her tongue lolling out as he tossed a s
