Present Day Lily The rain had started just as we stepped out of the church, a perfect blend to the day already soaked in sorrow. My mum and I were dressed in black, our mourning outfit befitting for the grief that squeezed our hearts. She still looked as fashionable and elegant as she did every other day. I suppose I looked graceful as my mother had picked out my dress. Her hand was cold in mine and her sunglasses hiding the tears I knew streamed down her face. My own eyes were swollen and dry from crying, I could barely see. The service had been long. I barely registered in my mind words of comfort from friends and family. I kept thinking about Dad, how I would never hear his laugh again, never feel his arms around me in one of his warm hugs. As we descended the steps, I just wanted to get home and curl up in my bed, away from everyone and everything. I needed to drown out the noise. As we reached the end of the church steps, a sleek, black car screeched to a halt facing us.

I swallowed my pride and turned back to him, frozen, watching the victory smile spread across his face. Lily’s Point of View "You are beautiful," he said as we started eating. I flushed and looked down at my plate. "Thank you," I murmured. "A woman like you must have plans for the future. What are your desires?" he asked, his gaze penetrating. I put down my fork, pondering his question. "That’s a tough one for me," I began. "Most of my desires involved my father, and now…" I trailed off, the pain of his loss still fresh. "I am sorry again for your loss," Thomas said, with sincerity. For the first time, I saw a different side of him—a kind side. Maybe I should get to know him better, I thought. "I love my job," I said, "and I, also, enjoy cooking, good movies, and music. That should suffice for now, seeing as I don’t have many desires at, the moment, except to pay off the loans and go back, to Canada." "You had no plans of staying?" he asked, surprised. The next day, I arrived at the mansion, still dazed by its striking beauty and magnificence. As we drove through the massive gate, my anxiety grew. I tapped my fingers nervously all the way to the house, and then I was led to the patio where a brunch was set up. "Hi, Lily," Jessica, Thomas's mum greeted me with a smile. She gestured with her hand for me to take a seat at the table, which was filled with an array of appetizing treats. There were freshly baked croissants, smoked salmon with cream cheese and capers, a platter of artisanal cheeses and charcuterie, parfaits layered with Greek yogurt, granola, and berries, alongside glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice and mimosas.
