CHAPTER 9: THE CHOICE

Lily’s Point of View

I thought long and hard. The implications of either choice weighed on my mind. So, I chose what I thought was the lesser evil. I stayed. I swallowed my pride and turned back to him, frozen, watching the victory smile spread across his face. For the first time in my life, I understood what it meant to be at the mercy of another human being, and it was, awful.

Thomas’s mother eyed me with a gaze that seemed, to say, "After all your defiance, you stayed."

"Tom, I will be inside. We can discuss it after you're finished here," she said to Thomas.

"Okay," he responded, watching his mother walk away.

"You seem like a hard nut to crack, but it's okay, I enjoy challenges," Thomas said.

"In case you haven't noticed, I lost my father and I'm not in the best frame of mind. Pardon me," I said, my voice trembling slightly.

"Yes, I understand. I'm sorry for your loss. Now, you have me in your life, I hope, that I can fill that space," Thomas replied.
