CHAPTER 8: THE FIXED PATH

I sat on my bed, wrapped in a blanket against the evening chill, staring at old photographs of my father. Each image was a memory, of the past that felt so distant now. My fingers traced his smiling face in a family photo, tears blurring my vision. How had everything fallen apart so quickly?

Mom stood at the door, hesitant. "Can I come in?" she asked softly.

"Yes, Mom," I said, my voice barely a whisper.

She settled on the bed beside me. "I'm sorry for leaving," I said.

"Don't say sorry. I'm the one who is sorry," she replied, her voice breaking as she started to cry. "I'm sorry we didn't tell you. I was trying to protect you."

"What happened, Mom? What is going on? I don't understand," I said, my tears mirroring hers.

She sighed deeply. "Your father was a gambler. I'm sorry we didn’t tell you. How could I tell you that he lost all of our money?"
