Lila already felt like a third wheel between both of them. She tried to slip away and was glad that between the chatting and the hysterical laughter from both parties, none of them noticed her. She walked a few steps when her eyes landed on the man who had clicked those images earlier. "Levi!" She called out to him at once.
He hurried to her side at the urgency of the call. Unable to say anything, she pointed in the direction of the man and instantly he chased after him with Lila on his tail. By the time she met Levi, he was holding the man by the collar.
"Oh, good. You caught him," she said, realising that she was not as fit as he was. He had run faster than she had, yet he acted as if he had taken a stroll in the park. She took a moment to calm herself down before raising her head to speak to the man. "Why did you take the picture of me and my friend arguing?" She was unsure if her grammar was correct, but she had a greater need to delete the images than speak correctly.
"I mean, you did it in public so I thought you wanted the public to know," the man said with a cocky smile. Lila knew men like this; they were the reason she hated reporters more than she should.
"Why is my private life now public property?" She asked, controlling herself from holding him by the collar and shaking him continuously until his brain resets.
"I am a photographer and I take pictures of events and that." He stopped to whistle and it made her even angrier. "And right was an event that I do not want to miss," he finished.
"You cannot publish those pictures," she demanded, like he was her staff and had to do whatever she commanded.
The man laughed and shook his head in disbelief. "This," he said, taking up the camera bag he had been carrying and shaking it in her face. "Belongs to me and the pictures in them too; I can do whatever I want with them and I can't demand anything from me," he said and shrugged.
Lila did not like that she did not have control over the situation; it seemed like the man had control over her. Maybe Levi saw the expression on her face and held her hand with his free hand; when she looked up at him, he murmured to her and she nodded in agreement. 'It would be better if he took care of it,' she thought to herself.
Somehow within minutes, Levi had made the man agree to delete the pictures for money; she had zoned out so she did not hear any of the agreements they had. Lila knew that was what he wanted and she was never willing to give it to him but it seemed like Levi was going to give it to him.
"So do we have a deal?" Levi asked. He had left the man's collar and was now standing opposite him as if they were both discussing something important.
"You do," the man said, waving the camera again to him. He smiled and wandered off.
Lila wanted to tell him off for paying the man but she knew that she should be more thankful than judgemental to him at this point. "Thank you," she murmured.
"It's fine," he replied, pulling out his phone. "You can head back to the room. I want to call my parents about this paparazzi situation," he explained. She looked at his face and heard the unspoken words. He was telling her to be careful not to get photographed again. She sighed and nodded; after all, she was the one who had been causing trouble since they got married.
Without a word, Levi walked away, and as she watched him walk away, she wondered if he was going to meet the woman who had bumped into them earlier. She turned and walked back to the room as the thoughts of his soft hand grazing her skin filled her mind. She did not know why it seemed like a big deal to get but it did. Why did he touch her and disorient her?
She was still in bed when her phone began to ring; she wanted to ignore it because she was supposed to be on vacation and not getting that many calls. However, she was forced to pick it up when Levi Fton beside her asked her to do so. She did not know when he got in last night, but that did not matter to her.
She sat up in bed and picked up her phone from the stand, rubbing away the sleep in her eyes.
"Lila, have you always been such a mess?" was the first thing that crossed her ears as soon as she picked the phone to her ears.
"Mom, what is wrong?" She asked silently as she wondered why her mom had to call so early in the morning.
"What is wrong? You have the audacity to ask me what is wrong when you have caused such an uproar yet again. Why on earth are you and that petty boy so hell-bent on destroying both your families?" Eleanor was angry, and she was not hiding it.
"Mom I don't understand, and you have to."
"Why don't you pop yourself out of the balloon you've safely hidden yourself and wake up to reality?" Eleanor screamed at her over the phone.
"Pictures of you and Jasmine arguing are all over the Internet. No one is talking about anything else aside from how embarrassing you are to your family."
"But how?" Lila asked, turning to Levi, who was sitting too on the bed.
"That is what I want to know."
"It's impossible that the reporter backsides us after collecting money," she said after the words left her mouth; she knew she had fucked up. "So you knew about this? You knew about this and you did nothing?" Eleanor asked."We did something; we offered him money to delete the pictures," Lila explained. At the time all of this happened, she believed that they handled it properly but now she knew they did not. "Did he delete it in your presence?" She asked angrily. "No but...""Oh my goodness, how foolish. Just so you know both your sisters would never make such mistakes. You have been barely married two weeks and yet we have constantly had to try to take your name off the news two times already." "It's not like I wanted it to happen this way." "Then how did you want it to happen? What were you thinking? Arguing with Jasmine out there in the open?"Lila wanted to tell her mother that none of this would be happening if they were not hounding her like a dog. If they had trusted her
"Aren't you going to meet your mom?""You know what going up to meet her means," Lila took a deep breath. She knew that there was no way she was escaping it but still, she wanted to delay for a few minutes before she faced her mom. She knew the reason she was there and most of what she was going to say to her. She did not need any of that in her life at the moment."You cannot escape it; you do not want her to come down and drag you by the ears.""That is true," Lila said, standing up as she walked away. As she walked to the room, moments of her mother filled her thoughts. She knew how difficult her mother had been while she was growing up, and she thought that she would get better, but it seemed as if she got worse after each year. She braced herself and knocked on the door; she stopped before she could knock the second time. "This is my room, so why am I knocking?" she asked herself. Knowing she did not have an answer she took out her card and opened the door. She stepped in to see
Lila staggered her hand, still clutching into her cheeks. It was strange that her mom was lifting her hands to her face and even going as far as hitting her across the face. She had always been vile with her words but never had she hit her before. She turned her hand, still clutching her face. "Where do you think you are going?" She heard her mom's voice ring but her legs were doing the work for her.Her hand gripped the door handle, and she pulled it open. She walked out of the room—it was her room—and she knew the right thing to do was to throw her mom out and lock herself in there, but her brain seemed to be coordinating on its own. She dropped her hands to her side, clutching the parts of her clothes she could hold as she walked wherever her legs could carry her."A young woman should never eat like that." She pressed her eyes together before she pushed it open. Her childhood was filled with various phrases like that.Eleanor had been obsessed with raising the perfect three girls.
She felt at ease but then it felt like something invaded her privacy. She squinted her eyes and turned to the side. Levi was sitting beside her; she wondered how he had found her there but she kept the thoughts to herself. She turned to him, tilting her head to the side, a lot of questions wanting to come out of her mouth. Levi tilted his head in the same way she did bad; it caused a smile to break out of her lips. He did not break off the stare and she felt it like a challenge and continued to look at him. She began to feel her cheeks get hot and it became uncomfortable so she cleared her throat and looked away. She wondered what he felt from looking at her like that; was he also feeling the way she did? She pulled herself up and was ready to escape whatever it was that they had just shared through a glance. He held her hand tightly, pulled her down, and whispered slowly. "Don't get up yet; just a few more minutes. A few more minutes to watch the waves." She wanted to tell him th
Lila felt like it was becoming a ritual for her mom to call her first thing in the morning and usually, when that happened, her mood for the entire day. She did not need any of the negativity in her life that day; she wanted to have a good day when she did not have to think of the burden of trying to uphold her family name and honour and her mom breathing down her neck. She threw the phone to the bed after putting it on silent mode; it was then that she realised that Levi was not lying in bed. As if he heard her thoughts, the showers turned on immediately, and she nodded to herself. She was on vacation so why did he think he needed to be up and early before she did? Her mom kept calling and she knew that by the time she saw her, she was going to get an earful but for now, she chose her peace."He is such an early riser," she murmured to herself and that rubbed her the wrong way. He seemed to always be up before her and to her that was now something to compete about. She wondered why a
She got back to the room with two large coffees, put them on the table and went to the toilet immediately. Levi was already dressed and that she was grateful for. He went to the table and picked up one of the coffees. "I will assume that this is for me," he said, sipping from it. She did not respond as she closed the door. She was not feeling coffee but the incident between them had forced her to get some and she would be glad if he drank both cups. While she wandered around downstairs, giving him all the time to get dressed, she could not help but continuously replay the image of his body in her mind. She hated that she liked what she saw.She spent a good time in the toilet, having her bath, and just freshening up. Since she got to the suite, she had not done anything for herself, and it felt tiring. Once she was done,, she felt like a huge load was lifted off her shoulders. She dressed up and joined him on the sofa."Should we go out for breakfast?" she asked because sitting down w
They continued talking about random things without trying to touch on any personal topics. Finally, they were done with breakfast. "This is one of the longest breakfasts I have had," Lila began and he threw her a look. "Breakfast is usually something that is done in a hurry to meet up with the hustle and bustle of the day," she added, trying to explain to him. He wanted to tell her that they could have breakfast together from then on but he did not know if it was crossing the line or if they were cool enough for that to happen between them. "I hope it was worth the length." He said and she nodded. "It wasn't bad." She scrunched up her nose, ready to get up. "I have some business I need to attend to, so you can go to the room yourself and I will meet you there later," Levi broke the news to her. "Oh," she settles back into the chair. She thought they would go back up together, but for some reason walking alone to the room scared her. What if she made a mistake again and it result
"You know that I am more of an expert on love than you are so I think we should take my word for it when I call someone hot," Jasmine retorted. "I mean, I would not call him ugly; he is just like any other John Doe out there; the only catch is that he has money," she said, laughing. She tilted her head to her friend and added in a low tone. "If he did not, then he wouldn't be as desirable," Lila said with distaste in her mouth.Jasmine knew that Lila was as strong-headed as a pitbull and that it was going to take a lot to convince her about Levi. Lila and Levi had been at each other's throat for a long time so it was even a wonder to Jasmine how they were able to put all differences aside and just accept to be together for the sake of her family; she was not sure she would be able to do anything like that for her family. They continued talking about random things and Lila could not help but feel grateful that she had not been left alone. At least Jasmine being there did great for he
"Since we are friends and we are going all out, I think it would be nice for us to do some of the things on this list," Lila said, taking out a folded paper from her wallet and handing it over to him."What is this?""A list created by my cousins and sisters for my honeymoon," she replied. She knew that her sisters and cousins had created a teasing prank for her, but since they needed activities to keep busy and they wanted to look like a real coup, what other things would they need other than something like that?"Oh, I see, and you want us to do the things on this list?" he asked, and she nodded."We can have fun while still portraying the in-love couple for the media," she replied. He did not see anything wrong with her suggestion, so he agreed."I think the first thing for the day should be breakfast.""I agree," she said, and they decided to go down for breakfast. Of course, with all of the paparazzi moving about, they would get photographed. Instead of staying at the hotel for b
Lila gets to the private beach house but is stunned by the scene she meets. There is an arrangement of rose petals into the words 'I'M SORRY'. She is quite impressed and also shocked that Levi was capable of pulling something like that just to apologise. When she had decided to come there, she was not sure what to expect. However, standing there with Levi on the other side of the petal, arranging words, she felt her anger melt away. It was kind of cute and thoughtful for him to think of apologising in this way. She followed him with her eyes as he walked to her with a bouquet of yellow roses. He stood in front of her and pointed the bouquet at her. She did not know what to do or how to react, but she had never thought of turning down pretty flowers so she took them from him."Lila Carrington, I want to apologise," he began. She decided to finally listen to whatever excuse he had to bring up. She nodded, expecting more from him. "The truth is that though I am not in the country, I have
Jasmine did not know how to react, but when she saw that her friend was truly not moved, she decided to support her. They decide to spend the day at the beach after all; they both had nothing going on with them and they could lie around for the entire day. Lila changed into a sundress that barely stopped mid-thigh. They were to go to Jasmine's room so she could change, and they could go to the beach afterwards. As they opened the door, Levi was standing there with his card in hand, ready to open the door. Jasmine looked from Lila to Levi and cleared her throat before stepping out of the room. "Lila, I will meet you at the beach," she said before walimh wawya. She could tell that they both needed space to talk about whatever they had between them."Can we talk?" Levi asked as he stepped into the room."What else do we have to talk about? We already spoke," Lila said, her tone distant and cold."I want to explain to you why I was absent yesterday," he began, but she cut him off with a c
Lila sat up in bed, feeling her head throb from all of the alcohol she had consumed last night. Even though she was pretty tired from the party, she could not bring herself to sleep after the conversation with her sister so she took to filling the hole she felt with alcohol from the mini fridge in the room. She knew it was a bad idea for her to get wasted because she was going to feel the result in the morning, but she did not care. She had always known that even though her father regarded himself as a family man, he was more concerned about his business than his actual children. He saw the business opportunity in everything and decided when to turn his children into money-making machines. The worst of it all was that he did not stop at his children; he extended to the extended family, making sure to put everyone in the right place for not doing what he wanted from them. When her mind went to her mom, she felt even worse than she already did.To the eyes of the general public, they we
As soon as she pulled away from Marcus, she excused herself and ignored Levi. He had to know that what he had done had consequences. She did not care if he was frolicking around with that woman he had met or not; he should know that he had to keep his decency and appear as the perfect husband, at least for the year they were together. She was glad that the crowd in the room helped her keep him away from her all night. She moved swiftly through the room, ensuring not to stay in a spot for a long time; that way, by the time he wanted to approach her, she was long gone from there. The party ended and she began to head back to the room. It was tiring as they had been made to stand all through the party; it was fun while it lasted, but now she needed to sleep to replenish all of the energy she had expended that night."Lila?" Levi said in a loud voice as he moved towards her. She looked awkward and wished that they were in a much more enclosed space; then she could have ignored him without
"I thought Levi was going to show up in style and stun the crowd, but it seems like I was wrong," Jasmine murmured. Lila had tried to act as if his not showing up was not having an effect on her, but how could it not? He was going to make rumours brew, and that was a disadvantage for them both."You see why I do not like him? He always does things how he pleases. I am here putting on a great show and he is nowhere to be found," she muttered angrily in response. She had been trying her best all night not to get drunk, and she feared that if she drank all of the contents in the glass in her hand, she might be dirty dancing on the dance floor to classic music again."Call him up again; maybe something happened." Lila wished something happened to him; that had to be the only explanation for why he had ghosted like this. "Maybe he got hit by a bus or is having a bad day with stomach troubles.""Sounds like you would wish that for him," Lila murmured, a smile climbing her lips as she though
Lila had gotten to know that the island was hosting a party and since she had nothing else to do, she decided to go to the party. As usual, Levi was gone all day so she sent him a message informing him about the party before she went dress shopping. She knew her mother would approve of them going to the party so she made plans to do so.She and Jasmine spent a bit of time shopping for dresses before getting their hair, nails, and makeup done. By the time they were all done with it all, it was already close to the time for the party. Lila checked her phone for the hundredth time in a second; Levi had not replied to the message she sent and he was nowhere to be seen. Knowing that this was an opportunity for them to get their names out there, she was sure he would not miss it so she left a note for him in the room telling him to meet her there as she would be waiting.By the time she got to the party venue, she realised it was a much larger party than she had thought. There were tons of
Lila sighed when she got her mom's call. Levi was back in the room and her mom was demanding to get dinner with both of them before she left. Lila knew that it was going to be uncomfortable for her to sit through dinner with her mom constantly throwing jabs at her in front of Levi. She knew Levi might have been going through the same with his parents but still, it was a bit embarrassing for her to show him that side of her."Wasn't there any other thing to wear out?" Eleanor asked immediately, and they sat. Lila rolled her eyes as she tried to control the anger she felt from knowing that her mother was going to say worse. She looked down at her dress; she had been satisfied by the clothes she picked out before she left the room but no, her mother's tone was making her doubt herself. "You are in the eye of the public constantly; why don't you stick to wearing designer brands? Do you want me to send you a personal stylist?" she asked. If she wasn't her mother, she would have pegged her
Lila groaned in bed as she shifted from side to side. She looked around as she tried to process where she was. She blinked and memories flooded her mind, beginning from when she had agreed to marry Levi to how drunk she was yesterday. She remembered every small detail that happened yesterday and was grateful that she had not embarrassed herself while drunk last night. She sat up in bed and something on the nightstand caught her eye.She picked up the sticky note and a card of hangover pills fell out; she read it and a smile unknowingly climbed her face. 'I have important business to take care of this morning; there is something to eat on the table and this is something for your hangover. Take Care'She smiled but then a frown took over on her face. She could not believe that he was caring for her while running to that woman from the other day. "Why doesn't he just stay with her instead of shuffling back and forth between us?" she murmured as she crumbled the paper in hand and threw it
