KAMARIA POV We called it a night at eleven pm, deciding to go home before we get absolutely drunk. We are no longer as young as we used to be. Being reminded that you are growing old can be depressing. Outside the bar I tightened the red coat I had over the black gown I wore for the evening. It has gotten pretty cold. As the winter months draws closer the nights are getting chillier. It is a lot quieter than usual on the streets, with few drunk teenagers making ruckus here and there. “Do we use one taxi?” Jonathan asked clutching his jacket closer to his slim frame. He had his hands protectively tucked into the pockets of his leather jacket. “Might be wise,” Bobby agreed. He looked unaffected by the weather, and had the list covering over the shirt he wore for the evening. Even though we leave in different streets using one Uber means we don’t get to leave someone behind. Jonathan called the Uber. While we waited, a white Toyota jeep pulled up to me, and the glance whined do
DAMIEN POVI turned around to hit the alarm clock shutting it up. It is five am time to get up. I am supposed to be at the courthouse by eight. The custody case is by nine. Max asked to come in early just to show the judge that I am responsible. Lily groaned in protest at being woken up by the alarm. Yesterday she came in late from partying with her friends and work colleagues. “I am sorry baby,” I turned around to peck her forehead before getting out of bed. She mumbled something unintelligent and went back to sleep. I went to the closet and threw on my work out clothes and then made my way downstairs to the training room. Not a full gym workout set, but I have got lifts and treadmill. Few stretches, twenty minutes run, and forty five minutes weights and I was done with my morning exercise. Sweating like a cow about to be slaughtered, I ran up the stairs back to my room. Lily was still asleep. Just to irritate her I went to the edge of the bed and kissed her. She moaned into
KAMARIA POV “Mum, am I going to court with you?”“No, baby, you are going to school,” I answered distracted. My attention was more on the eggs I was frying than on the conversation I was having with my daughter. I woke late this morning because last night I forgot to set my alarm clock, and if we don’t leave within the next ten minutes I am going to be late to the court. Not a good example of parent hood showing up late on the morning of your custody battle suit with your ex husband, and according to stuffy pants I must do my best to appear like a good caring and responsible mother through out this suit. Which means no dating, no questionable behaviours like driving drunk, or being caught with your pants down. Told him emphatically that he wouldn’t have to worry about that with me, only someone with a love life worries about being caught with their pants down, my love life is as dry as the desert. Not that Mr superiority complex believed a word I said. “Alright eat up baby so I c
DAMIEN POVThe door to the court room opened and Kamaria with her entourage walked in. Leading the group is a young guy that looked like he borrowed his suit and a stern face that looks murderous. What did she do? Hire a baby lawyer. The guy looked like he just graduated law school. If this is what she hired then this case is in the bag, because I am sure Max and my lawyers will wipe the floor with this guy. I adjusted myself on the sit suddenly feeling very confident and happy inside and that is until I noticed himI can’t believe she brought him along. I clenched my fist as I watched him take a seat at the back, but not before I saw him squeeze her hand briefly. Kamaria continued on ahead alone with her lawyer. “Who are you glaring at?” Max turned to look behind me. “Who is that?”“That is her boss,” I spat out, like it was something disgusting on my tongue. “I can see why you are jealous. He is a perfect male gorgeousness.”“I am not jealous,” I protested sharply in a low snarl
KAMARIA POV I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me that Damien will fish out people from my past to use against me. Ten years ago he might not have known where to look, but now he does. With means and money behind him getting people to do his bidding wouldn’t be hard. Their witness testimonies are all true except for the way they portrayed it. I know what Damien and his lawyers are trying to do. They want to paint me like I am an unfit mother and from the look on the judge’s face and the murmurs going on around me, I believe they are succeeding. Eden did a good job countering Caroline testimony, but Simone I don’t know how he will manage that because her testimony is true. It was a time in my life I am not proud of and frankly have purged from my mind until I saw her walk into this courtroom. It was obvious to everyone was she was implying with her words. I didn’t want to look back because I am scared to see the look on Reign’s face. “Why didn’t you tell me?!” Eden growled in a l
DAMIEN POV“Did he just fucking call me up as a witness?”“Yep,” Max muttered in spite of my words being rhetorical. “Do you know why he would do that?”“I think it is because of your infidelities. We know this was going to happen, unfortunately you weren’t discrete with your affairs.”“Good thing she is not a saint either,” I said ignoring Max disapproving tone.I got to my feet buttoned up my blue suit and made my way to the witness box. Max have already drilled me on how to do this. Keep my answers shot and try not to give away too much information that can be used against me. The clerk administered the oat and I watched as the defending council approached me with the seriousness of a tiger ready to maul its prey. “Please state your name for the court.”I boldly did and even went a step forward before he asked. “My name is Damien Black and I am the CEO of the Black and Co company.”I was calm, no tremor. I smirked inside at the whisper of recognition that swept through the cou
KAMARIA POV“Counsel call your next witness.”“Are you ready?” I heard Eden ask. He sounded as if concerned about my well-being. I looked at him wondering if he has sudden grown soft on me and cared, but his expression was blank. Who am I kidding? “Yeah, I am ready,” I murmured even though I don’t feel ready. I have never been in a witness box before and I am scared that I will mess up and it will cost me my daughter. I stood on a wobbly legs and walked out of my seat. Luckily I didn’t crumble to the ground. When I took my seat the clerk came and did the oat thing where I swore to tell nothing but the truth to the court. I wondered if everyone keeps it. I switched off my thoughts when Eden stood before me. For one so young he sure looks scary, and if he wasn’t my lawyer I will be intimidated by him. Who am I kidding. Even as he is my lawyer I am still intimidated by him. “State your full name to the court.”“Kamaria Paisley,” I did as he asked. “How long were you married to Mr
KAMARIA POV Reign looked calm and confident as he walked past me. I couldn’t help but admire and envy his confident bearing. I felt someone glaring at me and looked it was Damien. He quickly looked away when I looked at him, leaving me wondering what that was all about. I returned my attention to Reign who sat at the witness box like he owned the damn thing, with no look of discomfort on his face. “Please can you state your full name to the court?” Max asked in a mocking polite tone. “I believe you already did that,” Reign joked with a charming smile on his face, causing the crowd to erupt into laughter. Max glared at him, unappreciative of his humour. “Do you know Miss Paisley?”“Yes, I do.”“How long?”“How long what?” Reign teased again with a deadpan expression. “Arrogant prick,” Damien whispered, or thought he did but everyone heard him. His lawyer and the judge glared at him. He looked away but didn’t didn’t look sorry. Max returned his attention to Reign an impatient lo
