They told me not to think about him too much. Because that would only make me sad.
But I do. I do think about him every single day.
I think about the slight scattering of freckles on his nutmeg skin. I think about the deep coils in his hair and his long fingertips, I think about his name - Roman. A name which has always been fit for a man like him.
But most of all, I think about his eyes and their peculiar shade of grey. I had never seen eyes that shade before I met him.
For some reason, they remind me of the moon. Especially when he stood in different lights. I'd like to think his eyes also reflected his moods.
Did you know that when an eclipse happens, there are two shadows cast? The first is called the umbra and it gets smaller as it goes away from the sun. The second shadow is called the penumbra and it gets larger as it goes away from the sun.
I used to think Roman was as beautiful as the moon. But I never looked at him during an eclipse. I forgot that you needed the light to see the shadows...
I didn’t understand darkness before. At least not the way I was supposed to.
If I had, maybe I’d have seen right through him from the beginning. If I had focused more on his shadows than the beauty of the eclipse, maybe none of it would have ever happened...
”Crystal! Wake up, we’re going to be late!” I heard the all too familiar voice of my cousin yell.
I opened my eyes slightly and groaned when the sunlight from the window hit my eyes.
”Arg! No!” I grumbled as I covered my head with my pillow.
The next thing I knew I felt someone jump on my bed, causing a depression to form right beside where I lay.
“Go away Kat!” I spoke as I turned over determined to ignore her.
Being ever adamant, Kat started bouncing up and down, provoking the already overused springs in my mattress.
“No can do. It’s our first day back to school and you are not making me go through that alone.” She spoke.
I lifted my pillow and peeked up at Kat. I gave a pathetic cough.
“I think I’m sick?”
Kat rolled her eyes.
“Yeah, nice try. Now, get up.” Kat tugged on my hand and pulled me into a sitting position.
She jumped off my bed and walked over to grab a hair tie from our shared dresser. Considering Kat always lost all her hair ties, I assumed she had just stolen one of mine like she usually did.
The sun’s rays filled the room casting a warm glow. I couldn’t help but smile. The sun didn’t come out often in Woodfell but when it did, I found it hard to be in a bad mood.
Except today.
I threw myself back into bed and tossed my floral comforter over my head.
I heard Kat sigh and the next thing I knew, she was tugging on the comforter.
I gripped it tighter, not letting her pull it off.
“Come on Crissy, don't be stubborn."
"I'm not being stubborn." I spoke defensively.
"Yes you are."
With one last pull, she won our little tug of war.
She placed her hands on her hips and let out a huff as she tossed my beautiful comforter aside on the carpet.
"You know I could easily just pick that up and go back to sleep." I pointed out to her as I picked on a braid that had escaped my silk scarf head wrap.
"Do that and I will break your arm." She spoke, dead serious.
"Go ahead.” I challenged her. “At least I won't have to go to school." I muttered.
She turned and shot me a glare.
"I get it, okay? The first day of school always sucks but we’ll endure, we always do.” Kat had already moved over to our closet and had started digging through no doubt searching for my uniform.
She was already all dressed up in the customary Silvercrest Preparatory Academy school uniform.
A navy blue blazer, a white button down shirt, a black skirt, navy blue tie, black socks and black shoes.
Her long curls which held some golden blonde highlights was now tied up in a high bun.
I knew how much Kat hated tying her hair up. But it was part of the school’s dress code so she couldn’t do much to help it.
“Easy for you to say, you’re not on the pack’s ‘most hated’ list.” I told her as I let out a yawn and stretched out my arms.
“Stop exaggerating. You’re not on the pack’s most hated list..” Kat told me.
“Yes I am. I was already an outcast in this pack when I got here and now after what happened this summer-“
“What Roman did had nothing to do with you.” Kat quickly intercepted me in a softer voice.
That ache in my chest that I had been trying to fight back all summer came back. But hey, at least I wasn’t spontaneously bursting out crying anymore.
I swung my feet off the bed and got up. “Please don’t say his name.” I muttered as I tried to busy myself with making my bed. Anything to avoid eye contact with Kat.
Kat’s bed which was right beside mine was unmade of course, she was probably planning on coming back right after school and goring back to sleep.
“I’m sorry.” She spoke in a gentle tone. One she usually wouldn’t use but she knew how sensitive I was about this subject matter.
She walked up to me and placed a hand on my shoulder. “I know it’s hard going back after all that happened but I’ll be there every step of the way, I promise.”
I smiled at her. “Thank you.”
Kat and I weren’t sisters, we hadn’t even known about each other's existence until seven years ago but she was my best friend, the sister I had never had.
“And,” Kat added, “if anyone does say something, I will kick their butts.”
I laughed but stopped myself instantly when I realized she wasn’t kidding. “Please don’t. The last thing we need is to get in trouble or draw attention to ourselves. Besides, wouldn’t that kind of ruin your chances of getting accepted into the AAP?”
“Oh please," she waved me off and gave a smug smile. "I’m a shoo in for the AAP, I’ve trained my butt off all year. I’ve worked harder than anyone else, that’s how much I want this.”
The Alpha’s Apprenticeship Program or the AAP is a program that our school offers. It gives ordinary students the ‘chance of a lifetime’. Undergoing an apprenticeship under the alpha himself.
It sounds like a big deal and that's because, around here, it is.
The Alpha’s apprentices are an elite group made up of the creme de la creme of the pack. They work directly under the alpha and are in charge of dealing with certain social, political and sometimes even international matters. They are basically overrated assistants if you ask me.
But Kat doesn't see it that way.
She has been dreaming of becoming one of them since she was five.
It's all she has been talking about lately too. Like literally all the time.
“I agree, they’d be crazy not to pick you.” I told her.
And I wasn’t lying. Kat gets decent grades and she is one of the most athletically fit people I know. Those are basically the main requirements for the program so I have no doubt that she’ll get in.
"I know." Kat flipped her hair. "I don't even know what I'd do if they didn't."
I wouldn't want to know either.
Kat is the type of person who is used to getting things done her way and when that doesn't happen, she tends to freak out.
Her parents know it.
Her friends know it.
Even our teachers know it.
We call it 'Hurricane Kat'.
The door to our room burst open and Hazel, Kat’s eleven year old little sister, stuck her head in. Her curly hair, which was much like her big sister’s, was tied in two buns on each side of her head.
“Mum says you two should get your butts downstairs or you’ll be late for school!” She announced in her happy little voice.
“Don’t you knock, brat?” Kat yelled at her in irritation.
Hazel simply shrugged before running off.
Kat rolled her eyes and turned her attention back to me.
”Alright, girl. We’ve got this, okay? If anyone messes with you today, they mess with me. I’ve got your back. Okay?”
I sucked in a deep breath and nodded. “Okay.”
Kat smiled in satisfaction. “Great. Now let’s get you into this ugly uniform.” She spoke before turning to search our closet again.
I looked out the window at the light that was peeking through the trees knowing deep down in my heart that things probably wouldn’t be okay ever again.
Ten minutes later, Kat and I hurried downstairs. I was now fully dressed in the Silvercrest Academy school uniform, except unlike Kat, I had opted to not wear the school blazer and went with the standard blue button down knit sweater instead and my skirt wasn’t as short as Kat’s, it was the standard length. But then again with Kat’s long legs, skirts always seemed to be too short on her.The scent of bacon immediately caught my attention, the dining room table had already been set and Aunt Sarah’s delicacies awaited us.We found Aunt Sarah in the kitchen, she was in the process of bagging some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and Parker was seated at the island eyeing her sternly.“Mother, we talked about the crusts.” His tone sounded threatening. Parker is the cutest five year old I’ve ever met but his cuteness easily crosses into scary when something isn’t done his way.Aunt Sarah rose her brows at her youngest son in shock.“Morning Auntie S!” I greeted as I went over to place a
Just as I expected, the minute we walked through the doors of Silvercrest academy, we were met with stares and whispers. Some people even had the courage to point.“I am seriously about to kick someone’s ass.” Kat spoke before growling at a group of girls who were staring. They immediately scrambled in fear.“Just ignore them.” I told her remembering Aunt Sarah and Uncle Victor’s advice.I had spent so much of my life keeping my head down that I was used to it by now. People would always talk, it was inevitable. My job was to not care or at least pretend not to.A bunch of freshmen came running past us almost knocking me over. Kat held me steady just in time.“Hey, pups! You’ve been changing for all of two minutes, do you want me to come over and teach you what an actual grown werewolf can do?” She called out after them, clenching her fists.“Maybe the halfling should learn something about balance.” One yelled back causing all of them to burst out laughing before they ran off.Kat lo
"I heard you almost got killed by the Melroses."Kat and I turned around to see our friend, Christopher, who had just taken a seat next to Kat. We were in the school hall, where everyone was gathering for our assembly. We had our assembly every Monday of the week to get briefed on anything important that was happening in the school.Kat leaned back on the chair she sat on, putting her feet up on the chair in front of her. She had long enough legs to comfortably do such things. And we did have a lot of room in the back roll. People tend to steer clear of the outcasts. "I think you mean they almost got their butts handed to them." She threw an arm over my shoulder. "Cryss and I totally had it under control."I threw Kat's arm away. "Speak for yourself. I was so close to peeing my pants." I hissed, shooting her a glare to show that I wasn't okay with her little stunt from earlier.Kat rolled her eyes. "You, my dearest cousin, need to grow a pair.""No, you, need to learn some self contr
.Wait - what the actual...Suddenly all the excitement died down and the room became silent.Chris looked at me with his jaw dropped and Kat just looked confused.“Huh?” She sounded. My thoughts exactly. Did they get our names mixed up?“Crystal Swan.” Bridgette repeated. No that was definitely my name but why was she saying it? I wasn’t on that list. I couldn’t be. I didn’t even apply!“Cryss, get up there.” Chris whispered.Huh?My mind was blank at that moment. My feet stuck to the ground.Go up there? No, no, no, no. This was a mistake. I did not apply for this program hence my name could not have been called out. This was a day time dream. A nightmare in fact. If I waited a bit longer, it would end.One Mississippi, two Mississippi...Nope. Still here.Everyone was staring at me.No way. I was not getting up. I would get up and Courtney and Bea would burst out laughing. This must have been one of their practical jokes.Hardy ha ha, girls, I’m not falling for it.“Cryss.” Chris h
“I already told you, I. Don’t. Know.” I let out in an exasperated tone.Chris’ face implied that he didn’t believe a word I was saying.“Well then how did this happen? What did Beta Bridgette say when you talked to her?” Chris asked, I didn’t miss the dreamy look he got on his face when he spoke her name.“She didn’t say anything.” I responded. I left out the part where she was absolutely no help at all. “Just that I’m now a part of the AAP.”I let out a sigh after the words left my mouth. I was going to be learning and training among the brightest and best of the Silvercrest youth. Cue humiliation.“Well, it says here that you can quit if your reasoning is absolutely valid or if one of the supervisors dismisses you.” Chris spoke, I had given him the AAP handbook to study on my behalf because honestly, I still didn’t want to believe any of this was real.“I have valid reasoning! I didn’t apply!” I yelled.“Okay, Miss fussy pants. Don’t be mad at me. I didn’t do this.”I sucked in a d
“Crystal!” I heard Hazel whine. “Whaat?” I moaned in irritation refusing to open my eyes.”Your alarm!”“Huh?”“Your alarm is ruining my beauty sleep!” Hazel screamed. I shot up from my make shift bed on the floor of Hazel’s way too yellow room.Of course, my alarm!Because apparently now, I had to be at school four whole hours before everyone else. Life sucks.”Sorry, Haze.” I mumbled as I scrambled off the yellow couch in her room. It was small but even if I wasn’t the tallest human, I still had to fold my legs. And not to mention it wasn’t the most comfortable place to spend your night. I could have shared Hazel’s bed but I wasn’t about to get bitten or clawed in the middle of the night by an adolescent wolf.”You know you could just tell mummy what Kat did.” Hazel spoke with a yawn. A yellow bonnet covered her head. The theme of her room(and life) was quite literally, sunshine, much like her personality really.“And make Kat madder than she already is? No thank you.” I respond
The only thing worse than having to go to school, period - is having to go to school when the sun isn’t even up.The minute I got to the gates of Silvercrest Prep, I had to show my student ID to the guard. We never did that during the day.Security measures, I guess. The guard told me everyone was already in the gym so that’s where I headed. When I got there, I opened the double doors and just because, they decided to let out a huge screeching sound as they effortlessly swung open.Everyone immediately turned to stare at me. Oh great. I lowered my head and quickly walked in.They were all gathered in the centre of the gymnasium. The candidates and two people I immediately recognised May but not the other guy.I went to stand beside Allison, hers was the most friendly face in the room at the moment. The man gave me a stern look. “You’re late, candidate.””Uh, I am?” I asked hesitantly. The large clock on the wall read 5.01.am.Well 5.02 now.”You are.” He responded sternly. ”That’s t
I learnt two things from my first morning session for the AAP;1) I am not fast.2) I am not strong. Two things I was actually quite aware of before actually. I’ve never been the athletic type. But I was always decent enough to not get picked last in gym class. Well that was before I came to Woodfell and started at Silvercrest Academy where their P.E felt like I had gone to military school. And those were just the regular classes.Kat took the more advanced physical classes. There was Class I, which I was in, the rookie class. Class II, Class III, which I guess you could call junior varsity and the best of the best, Class IV, Kat’s class. The second portion of the training session had been to test our strength and while all the other candidates did more than the bare minimum, I was left in complete humiliation as I struggled with the challenges Major Raphael offered. If Instructor May hadn’t been so patient with me, I had a feeling Major Raphael would have kicked me out of that gym.A
