Just as I expected, the minute we walked through the doors of Silvercrest academy, we were met with stares and whispers.
Some people even had the courage to point.
“I am seriously about to kick someone’s ass.” Kat spoke before growling at a group of girls who were staring. They immediately scrambled in fear.
“Just ignore them.” I told her remembering Aunt Sarah and Uncle Victor’s advice.
I had spent so much of my life keeping my head down that I was used to it by now. People would always talk, it was inevitable. My job was to not care or at least pretend not to.
A bunch of freshmen came running past us almost knocking me over. Kat held me steady just in time.
“Hey, pups! You’ve been changing for all of two minutes, do you want me to come over and teach you what an actual grown werewolf can do?” She called out after them, clenching her fists.
“Maybe the halfling should learn something about balance.” One yelled back causing all of them to burst out laughing before they ran off.
Kat looked like she was about to chase after them but I gripped her hand. “It’s not worth it.” I told her
Kat huffed as she glared in their direction. “I beg to differ.”
“Think happy thoughts.” I told her. Judging by the look on her face, ‘happy thoughts’ were probably tearing someone’s head off.
“Okay... plan B.”
I grabbed her hand and led her in the opposite direction.
“We should probably get our books from our lockers before the assembly.” I told her as I scanned our new schedule.
“What do we have first?” Kat asked.
“History of Werewolf and Human Relations with Mr Tanner.” I responded.
Kat and I have the same schedules each year with a few exceptions considering she takes more advanced physical classes that would help her get into the AAP. Classes I could never take.
I’m not as strong or fast and my reflexes aren’t as lightning quick as the rest of the Werewolves here. Disadvantages of having a werewolf mother and human father. Hence the title, 'halfling'.
Kat leaned against my locker. “I kind of like Mr Tanner. He’s the only theory professor around here who doesn’t make me want to doze off after the first five minutes of the lesson.”
I giggled.
I liked Mr Tanner as well, he was one of the only four ‘halflings’ that existed in the Silvercrest pack. Well, I guess there were only three of us now that Roman was gone.
Mr Tanner is the only professor here who doesn’t just tolerate me. We’re more or less the same so I guess he’s more empathetic to what I go through.
“Oh no, Wicked Witches of the West alert” Kat muttered with a roll of her eyes.
Her eyes focused on something behind us and there was a sneer on her face.
I didn’t even have to turn around to know who she was talking about.
Their names were Courtney and Bea, and they have had a special type of hatred for me since the minute I got here.
Sure everyone pretty much recognized that I didn’t belong here, I was an obvious outcast but then there were these two rays of sunshine. I really had spent my life thinking mean girls were just cliches from TV. Courtney and Bea proved me wrong every time I had an encounter with them. And trust me, they had been many.
In my first week at Silvercrest academy, they cornered me in the bathroom and pretty much shoved me to the floor, taunting me about being a halfling.
I have a feeling they would have done much worse if Kat hadn't shown up and started yelling up a storm attracting the attention of other people.
They might have not liked me but there were strict rules about harassing other werewolves in the Silvercrest pack. Even halflings.
I looked in their direction, they were surrounded by their group of friends laughing and goofing off. Even I had to admit that they were obnoxiously gorgeous. It was such a shame that such beautiful people had such ugly hearts.
“Let’s just go.” I told Kat as I slammed shut my locker.
“Yeah, we should. I can only be around so much fakeness for so long before I start to break out.” Kat spoke in an unnecessarily loud voice.
I froze and fought the urge to slap my forehead.
My dearest cousin and her love for provocation.
I turned around and surely the two girls were glaring in our direction.
"Nice going, they're heading over here." I told Kat. And indeed, the two girls had walked away from their group of friends and started heading in our direction.
Kat clenched her fists. "Let them come. I'm not afraid of them."
Oh Kat, my dearest, stupid, Kat. I knew she was more than capable of taking them but it’s no secret that Bea and Courtney are more than able of holding their own too. But I, on the other hand, stood no chance at all.
I figured the best course of action at this point was just to get Kat as far away from this situation as possible. I quickly grabbed her hand and spun around. I was determined to drag her away if I had to and I begun to as well before-
Splat!
Oh. No.
I had bumped right into someone, causing them to spill the bottle of water they had been holding all over the shirt of the person standing right next to them.
No! No! No!
Everyone had stopped to stare at the scene before us.
My hands flew to my mouth. "I - I am so sorry." I blurted out.
The eyes of the boy who was now wet narrowed his eyes at me in anger. They glowed a bright green and I could tell his wolf was threatening to jump out. The boy he was with quickly held him back.
I could tell people were coming closer, surrounding us from all corners.
Really Crystal? Of all people to cause an accident with...
Micheal and Joshua Melrose. The alpha's twin little brothers. They were basically like princes around here.
"What did you just do?" A voice shrieked. As if this couldn't get any worse, Bea and Courtney had made their way to the front of the crowd. They now stood in front of the twins with their arms folded across their chest.
"You are going to pay, halfling." Bea growled.
I wanted to shrink back at that moment, I wanted a hole to appear and swallow me up. So much for keeping my head down.
Kat took a step forward. "Oh come on, Beatrice, It was obviously an accident!" She yelled in my defense.
"Like hell it was." Courtney spoke up as she sized up Kat. "For all we know, this was a hate crime."
A hate crime? I just bumped into the guy.
Kat let out a humourless laugh. "Hate crime? Clearly you don’t know what that even is.”
“After what her little boyfriend, Roman, did, I wouldn’t be surprised if she did this on purpose.” Courtney snapped.
If people had forgotten my association with Roman before, they definitely remembered now. I tugged on Kat’s arm. I needed to get out of here before I broke down.
“Shut up, before I make you.” Kat yelled.
I quickly gripped Kat's hand and pulled her back before she could do anything. Courtney growled, her eyes glowing a lighter blue as well.
"Hey cut it out, Court." One of the twins finally spoke, diffusing the tension. It was the one who had been holding the water bottle. I honestly couldn't tell them apart to know which one was Michael and which one was Joshua.
He stepped forward and got in between Kat and Courtney, shielding the angry blonde from us. I still gripped Kat's hand though, in case she tried something.
He stared right at me briefly before looking away.
"Everyone! Go on with your business!" He yelled as he started waving people away. "I can assure you, Josh is okay. My brother just took a mid morning shower, that’s all. If anything, he's much cleaner than he was before." He surprised me by snickering.
"Oh you think that's funny, jerk?" The twin, I now knew was Josh spoke before playfully shoving his brother. "You're lucky that wasn't grape juice. God knows you've ruined enough of my clothes!"
"That was one time! Let it go already, Joshy."
"Do. Not. Call. Me 'Joshy'."
"What are you going to do? Tell on me?" Micheal taunted.
Before I could comprehend what was happening, Josh had pounced on his brother.
"Arg! Guys! Not again." Bea yelled before going in to break up the fight.
The crowd started cheering. For a minute I was too stunned by this turn of events to react but then I decided this was our chance to make our escape. With everyone being distracted by something else.
I pulled Kat along and we disappeared into the crowd.
"I heard you almost got killed by the Melroses."Kat and I turned around to see our friend, Christopher, who had just taken a seat next to Kat. We were in the school hall, where everyone was gathering for our assembly. We had our assembly every Monday of the week to get briefed on anything important that was happening in the school.Kat leaned back on the chair she sat on, putting her feet up on the chair in front of her. She had long enough legs to comfortably do such things. And we did have a lot of room in the back roll. People tend to steer clear of the outcasts. "I think you mean they almost got their butts handed to them." She threw an arm over my shoulder. "Cryss and I totally had it under control."I threw Kat's arm away. "Speak for yourself. I was so close to peeing my pants." I hissed, shooting her a glare to show that I wasn't okay with her little stunt from earlier.Kat rolled her eyes. "You, my dearest cousin, need to grow a pair.""No, you, need to learn some self contr
.Wait - what the actual...Suddenly all the excitement died down and the room became silent.Chris looked at me with his jaw dropped and Kat just looked confused.“Huh?” She sounded. My thoughts exactly. Did they get our names mixed up?“Crystal Swan.” Bridgette repeated. No that was definitely my name but why was she saying it? I wasn’t on that list. I couldn’t be. I didn’t even apply!“Cryss, get up there.” Chris whispered.Huh?My mind was blank at that moment. My feet stuck to the ground.Go up there? No, no, no, no. This was a mistake. I did not apply for this program hence my name could not have been called out. This was a day time dream. A nightmare in fact. If I waited a bit longer, it would end.One Mississippi, two Mississippi...Nope. Still here.Everyone was staring at me.No way. I was not getting up. I would get up and Courtney and Bea would burst out laughing. This must have been one of their practical jokes.Hardy ha ha, girls, I’m not falling for it.“Cryss.” Chris h
“I already told you, I. Don’t. Know.” I let out in an exasperated tone.Chris’ face implied that he didn’t believe a word I was saying.“Well then how did this happen? What did Beta Bridgette say when you talked to her?” Chris asked, I didn’t miss the dreamy look he got on his face when he spoke her name.“She didn’t say anything.” I responded. I left out the part where she was absolutely no help at all. “Just that I’m now a part of the AAP.”I let out a sigh after the words left my mouth. I was going to be learning and training among the brightest and best of the Silvercrest youth. Cue humiliation.“Well, it says here that you can quit if your reasoning is absolutely valid or if one of the supervisors dismisses you.” Chris spoke, I had given him the AAP handbook to study on my behalf because honestly, I still didn’t want to believe any of this was real.“I have valid reasoning! I didn’t apply!” I yelled.“Okay, Miss fussy pants. Don’t be mad at me. I didn’t do this.”I sucked in a d
“Crystal!” I heard Hazel whine. “Whaat?” I moaned in irritation refusing to open my eyes.”Your alarm!”“Huh?”“Your alarm is ruining my beauty sleep!” Hazel screamed. I shot up from my make shift bed on the floor of Hazel’s way too yellow room.Of course, my alarm!Because apparently now, I had to be at school four whole hours before everyone else. Life sucks.”Sorry, Haze.” I mumbled as I scrambled off the yellow couch in her room. It was small but even if I wasn’t the tallest human, I still had to fold my legs. And not to mention it wasn’t the most comfortable place to spend your night. I could have shared Hazel’s bed but I wasn’t about to get bitten or clawed in the middle of the night by an adolescent wolf.”You know you could just tell mummy what Kat did.” Hazel spoke with a yawn. A yellow bonnet covered her head. The theme of her room(and life) was quite literally, sunshine, much like her personality really.“And make Kat madder than she already is? No thank you.” I respond
The only thing worse than having to go to school, period - is having to go to school when the sun isn’t even up.The minute I got to the gates of Silvercrest Prep, I had to show my student ID to the guard. We never did that during the day.Security measures, I guess. The guard told me everyone was already in the gym so that’s where I headed. When I got there, I opened the double doors and just because, they decided to let out a huge screeching sound as they effortlessly swung open.Everyone immediately turned to stare at me. Oh great. I lowered my head and quickly walked in.They were all gathered in the centre of the gymnasium. The candidates and two people I immediately recognised May but not the other guy.I went to stand beside Allison, hers was the most friendly face in the room at the moment. The man gave me a stern look. “You’re late, candidate.””Uh, I am?” I asked hesitantly. The large clock on the wall read 5.01.am.Well 5.02 now.”You are.” He responded sternly. ”That’s t
I learnt two things from my first morning session for the AAP;1) I am not fast.2) I am not strong. Two things I was actually quite aware of before actually. I’ve never been the athletic type. But I was always decent enough to not get picked last in gym class. Well that was before I came to Woodfell and started at Silvercrest Academy where their P.E felt like I had gone to military school. And those were just the regular classes.Kat took the more advanced physical classes. There was Class I, which I was in, the rookie class. Class II, Class III, which I guess you could call junior varsity and the best of the best, Class IV, Kat’s class. The second portion of the training session had been to test our strength and while all the other candidates did more than the bare minimum, I was left in complete humiliation as I struggled with the challenges Major Raphael offered. If Instructor May hadn’t been so patient with me, I had a feeling Major Raphael would have kicked me out of that gym.A
Roman was never the type of guy who flinched. The first time I met him, he had come over to the house with Uncle Victor. At the time, he was working for him.I remember that day like it was yesterday, I remember not knowing how to describe his beautiful skin, his complexion was more tan than Kat’s but lighter than mine. It was so flawless, with only a few freckles sprinkled around his nose, it made him all the more gorgeous. He always kept his hair short but even at the length it was at, you could see the deep coils in it.And his eyes, they first met mine where I was seated on the patio swing, reading a book. They were grey and they looked like they held a beautiful storm. Are we even supposed to describe storms as beautiful? Because that’s all I can come up with.Uncle Victor introduced us for the first time.I remember Roman smiled at me, it was the kind of smile I hadn’t seen in a while. That ‘I’m genuinely happy to meet you’ smile.I didn’t know how important Roman would be in my
“Do you need a breather, princess?” I heard him speak. He laughed and the wind carried the sound towards me.Even though I was extremely irritated, I delighted in that laughter. It was nothing special really, in fact Roman’s laugh had always been kind of loud and obnoxious. But it was contagious.I stopped walking and crouched down to place my hands on my knees and catch my breath.“Oh shut up!” I huffed. I was sweaty, my bones were aching and I’m pretty sure the humidity was making my hair frizz up. I would have a full on fro by the time I got back home.Heck! I would have a full on fro by the time we got to the top of this stupid mountain.I told Kat straightening my hair for my date with Roman wasn’t necessary.I never straightened my hair willingly. And I especially wouldn’t have let Kat torture me with her flat iron if I knew Roman’s idea of a ‘date’ was hiking up the highest mountain in Woodfell.“You’re not human, are you?” I finally asked him.He stood a few meters away from
